Dark Winds is coming back!

The AMC hit TV series was renewed for a third season by the network back in September of 2023.

Season 3 is expected to debut in early 2025.

“We started this journey with very high hopes for this series, given the remarkable source material and extraordinary creative team behind it, and it has delivered on every level,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks.

The series, based on the Leaphorn & Chee novel series by Tony Hillerman, follows Leaphorn and Chee, two Navajo police officers in the 1970s Southwest that are forced to challenge their own spiritual beliefs when they search for clues in a double murder case.

Dark Winds is an enjoyable if fairly standard cop drama based on the novels of Tony Hillerman. The chalk and cheese partners Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and FBI agent Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) investigate a series of apparently unrelated crimes. What sets it apart from the crowd is the setting and period: the Navajo Nation of the 1970s.

The action kicks off with a violent bank raid. The thieves make off in a chopper and are flying in the direction of the Navajo Nation when it disappears. FBI agent Leland Whitover (Noah Emmerich) charges Leaphorn with investigating. He also arranges to have Chee seconded into the police force in order to keep an eye on things.

Despite the somewhat formulaic plot - the twist and turns are what you would expect and where you would expect them - the pacing of the narrative makes Dark Winds very watchable.

The good news? AMC Networks has officially renewed Dark Winds for a well-deserved third season. The bad news? The drama, based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman, isn’t expected to return with new episodes until early 2025.

Zahn McClarnon (The Son), Kiowa Gordon, and Jessica Matten (Burden of Truth) lead the cast of the critically acclaimed drama and are expected to return for season three. Season two also featured Deanna Allison (Accused) as Emma Leaphorn and Elva Guerra (Reservation Dogs) as Sally Growing Thunder.

AMC announced today that they have renewed Dark Winds for a third season, just weeks after the second season of the crime drama wrapped.

Based on the Leaphorn & Chee novels by Tony Hillerman, Dark Winds takes place in the 1970s Southwest and follows two Navajo police officers, Leephorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Chee (Kiowa Gordon). The series was created by Graham Roland with John Wirth as showrunner. Roland and Wirth also serve as executive producers alongside Zahn McClarnon, Anne Hillerman, Chris Eyre, Vince Gerardis, Tina Elmo, George R.R. Martin, and Robert Redford.

Dark Winds season 3 has officially been renewed by AMC, following the success of the previous two seasons. The series, based on Tony Hillerman's novels, revolves around two Navajo police officers investigating a double murder case in the 1970s Southwest. Unfortunately, audiences will have to wait until early 2025 for the premiere of season 3 due to the current WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes impacting writing and production.

The hit drama series has been renewed for Dark Winds Season 3.

A renewal was a no-brainer, with the cabler and its streaming sibling previously touting the show's continued success.

Dark Winds Season 2 averaged 1.7 million viewers during its first three days on the linear cable service.

Numbers for AMC+ have not been made available, but the network indicated that it had a strong footprint on the streaming service as the series aired.

Episodes were made available before their debuts on the service, so there was an incentive for fans to watch it earlier.

AMC is heading into more Dark Winds.

The cable network has renewed the crime drama for a third season, coming a couple of weeks after season two finished its run.

The series is planned to premiere in early 2025, a noticeable shift from the summer premiere of its first two seasons, but understandable given the writers and actors strike.

It comes after Dark Winds made its debut on Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max service as part of a two-month pop-up.

The first season of the series, which is produced by AMC Studios, drew 2.2M viewers on AMC for its June 2022 launch in Live+3 ratings. The company said that the second season averaged 1.7M viewers each week in Live+3, per Nielsen and saw “significant” viewership and acquisition gains from season one on AMC+.

The pickup comes about three weeks after the conclusion of the drama’s second season, which ranks among the top 10 cable dramas for this season. In the previous episode of Dark Winds, a local man named Emerson Charley was killed in a car explosion, and Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn considered it a premeditated murder rather than an accident. Colton Wolf, a blonde, white man, was the killer who had been orchestrating these murders, making himself a target for Leaphorn and Chee. Although Chee was no longer part of the Navajo authority, he worked as a private investigator hired by Rosemary Vines to retrieve a lockbox from the Charleys. As Leaphorn and Chee teamed up to get the box, they faced Colton, resulting in an encounter where Chee got injured. However, despite a fierce altercation, both parties survived. Early in the new season of Dark Winds, a wealthy woman hires Jim Chee to help recover a lockbox that was stolen from her home. A skeptical Chee says that the job sounds simple, “Except nothing ever is.”

You definitely cannot call Dark Winds Season Two simple. It features a pair of mysteries that inevitably connect in complicated ways that can at times require intense concentration to follow. Just as importantly, the series is even more ambitious in its depiction of life, death, and policing on a Navajo reservation in the early Seventies.

AMC’s shared a sneak peek from Dark Winds season two episode one ahead of its premiere on Sunday, July 30, 2023. The clip shows Bernadette Manuelito locking up a whining dude named Dean while Lt. Joe Leaphorn reminds her to ask for help the next time she has to ride a suspect in on a horse.

Directed by Chris Eyre from a script by John Wirth and Rhiana Yazzie, season two episode one – “Na’niłkaadii (Sheep Dog)” – is available today on AMC+ ahead of its TV linear premiere. All season two episodes will be available on Thursdays on AMC+ and Sundays at 9pm Et/Pt on AMC.

The season two cast is led by Zahn McClarnon (Fargo) as Lt. Joe Leaphorn, Kiowa Gordon as Jim Chee, and Jessica Matten (Burden of Truth) as Sgt. Bernadette Manuelito. Deanna Allison (Edge of America) stars as Emma Leaphorn and Elva Guerra (Reservation Dogs) is Sally Growing Thunder.

Zahn McClarnon loves that you love Dark Winds, the 1970s-set crime/mystery drama that returns with Season 2 this Thursday (on AMC+) and Sunday at 9/8c (on AMC proper).

The warm reception that Dark Winds Season 1 received last summer from viewers and critics alike “was not necessarily a surprise to me, but I was very happy that people enjoyed watching the show,” McClarnon told TVLine during a late-June Zoom. “I mean, it’s difficult to put together a television show. Extremely difficult. And when you get a reception like that, it makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

Set in 2080 in a world recovering from catastrophic nuclear war, The Experiment follows an elite spec-ops team, led by Captain Ava Stone (Mitra), sent on a rescue mission into a top secret military research facility after a rogue employee takes a group of scientists hostage.

The project marks the first for action label Action Xtreme, the genre division of UK arthouse producer-distributor Sovereign Media (Triangle Of Sadness).
