The K-drama My Happy Ending keeps swerving every time we feel like we’re reaching a certain conclusion. The show that stars Jang Na-Ra in the leading role of a CEO who has bipolar disorder seems to be somewhat confused with what its true implications are. We all know it’s currently a “trend” (for lack of a better word) in the Korean entertainment industry to represent mental illnesses. Up until now, most of the shows we’ve seen have done a decent job of this; however, some of them do come across as straight PSAs. I suppose it all started with how well-received “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” was. As much as I appreciate the intention, sometimes I’m left wondering if it’s really there or if it’s simply for the sake of ticking off the right boxes. My Happy Ending is a melodrama that goes...

Dark Winds is an enjoyable if fairly standard cop drama based on the novels of Tony Hillerman. The chalk and cheese partners Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and FBI agent Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) investigate a series of apparently unrelated crimes. What sets it apart from the crowd is the setting and period: the Navajo Nation of the 1970s.
The action kicks off with a violent bank raid. The thieves make off in a chopper and are flying in the direction of the Navajo Nation when it disappears. FBI agent Leland Whitover (Noah Emmerich) charges Leaphorn with investigating. He also arranges to have Chee seconded into the police force in order to keep an eye on things.
Despite the somewhat formulaic plot - the twist and turns are what you would expect and where you would expect them - the pacing of the narrative makes Dark Winds very watchable.

Dark Winds will have another case to solve at AMC and AMC+.
The hit drama series has been renewed for Dark Winds Season 3.
A renewal was a no-brainer, with the cabler and its streaming sibling previously touting the show's continued success.
Dark Winds Season 2 averaged 1.7 million viewers during its first three days on the linear cable service.
Numbers for AMC+ have not been made available, but the network indicated that it had a strong footprint on the streaming service as the series aired.
Episodes were made available before their debuts on the service, so there was an incentive for fans to watch it earlier.
"We started this journey with very high hopes for this series, given the remarkable source material and extraordinary creative team behind it, and it has delivered on every level," said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks.

AMC is heading into more Dark Winds.
The cable network has renewed the crime drama for a third season, coming a couple of weeks after season two finished its run.

It comes after Dark Winds made its debut on Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max service as part of a two-month pop-up.
Dark Winds stars Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon and Jessica Matten.
The first season of the series, which is produced by AMC Studios, drew 2.2M viewers on AMC for its June 2022 launch in Live+3 ratings. The company said that the second season averaged 1.7M viewers each week in Live+3, per Nielsen and saw “significant” viewership and acquisition gains from season one on AMC+.

The sad song playing during Leaphorn's belt buckle scene in the Dark Winds season 2 finale adds even more weight to an already-poignant moment. The track, "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" by Bob Dylan, perfectly captures Leaphorn's feelings of love and longing for his late son. Leaphorn's decision to make Vines go on his own version of "The Long Walk" mirrors the song's references to long stretches of time and emphasizes the emotional tone of Dark Winds season 2.
In the Dark Winds season 2 finale, a fittingly sad song plays while Leaphorn works on his late son's belt buckle. In the third episode of Dark Winds Season 2, we saw Leaphorn conclude how his son became a victim of the explosion at the Drumco drill site. He deduced that Colton Wolf was the one behind the explosion. However, Colton went to the hospital, where Jim was admitted, but failed to end his life. Instead, Joe Leaphorn and Bernie got close enough to almost capture him. As Colton evaded capture, Joe and Bernie continued to look for him and ended up in the isolated area of the rez, near the trailer—the very scene that opened the second season of Dark Winds.
In the fourth episode of Dark Winds, the plot was needlessly dragged out, devoting an entire episode solely to Leaphorn’s distressing attempt at capturing Colton, which seemed very tedious. The episode was full of violence and a heavy Western influence, it’s only really worth it if you...

Dark Winds goes beyond typical police procedural tropes by delving into the psychological and moral struggles of its protagonists, similar to cult favorite crime dramas like True Detective. The show is a positive step toward Indigenous North American representation, addressing ethnic and socio-political realities while set in the 1970s Southwest. Dark Winds is based on Tony Hillerman's Leaphorn & Chee novels, with season 1 drawing from "Listening Woman" and "People of Darkness," and the potential to explore other eras if renewed for more seasons.

Lt. Leaphorn and the Navajo police are closing in on the murderer who attempted to kill Joe and Jim Chee.
But they are no closer to identifying the man (Colton Wolf) nor understanding his motivations on Dark Winds Season 2 Episode 3.
This gap in their suspect profile could cost Joe and company dearly.
The problem is that this case has quickly gotten personal for Joe, reopening that hole in his heart that was J.J.'s death in an explosion.
This began when he discovered the belt buckle which J.J. had been wearing on the day he died among the burnt items from B.J. Vines' stolen lockbox on Dark Winds Season 2 Episode 1.
This obsession intensified when, on Dark Winds Season 2 Episode 2, Benny Charley informed Leaphorn that his murdered grandfather Emerson had told him the blond man had caused the explosion at the oil-drilling site.

Leaphorn learned from Tomas’s child that a mysterious blond man was the one behind the drill site explosion, in which Leaphorn lost his son. Leaphorn realized that Colton Wolf was responsible for killing his son. However, the question remains: was it a plan devised by Colton to target Leaphorn’s son, or did his son become mere collateral damage in the pursuit of Colton’s larger motive? In the previous episode of Dark Winds, a local man named Emerson Charley was killed in a car explosion, and Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn considered it a premeditated murder rather than an accident. Colton Wolf, a blonde, white man, was the killer who had been orchestrating these murders, making himself a target for Leaphorn and Chee. Although Chee was no longer part of the Navajo authority, he worked as a private investigator hired by Rosemary Vines to retrieve a lockbox from the Charleys. As Leaphorn and Chee teamed up to get the box, they faced Colton, resulting in an encounter where Chee got injured. However, despite a fierce altercation, both parties survived. In this newest episode, Joe Leaphorn would uncover a shocking truth about his son’s death, which was connected to the series of attacks orchestrated by Colton Wolf.

Early in the new season of Dark Winds, a wealthy woman hires Jim Chee to help recover a lockbox that was stolen from her home. A skeptical Chee says that the job sounds simple, “Except nothing ever is.”
You definitely cannot call Dark Winds Season Two simple. It features a pair of mysteries that inevitably connect in complicated ways that can at times require intense concentration to follow. Just as importantly, the series is even more ambitious in its depiction of life, death, and policing on a Navajo reservation in the early Seventies.

AMC+, as one of the most popular streaming services and an integral part of AMC Networks alongside Shudder, Acorn TV, Sundance Now, Hidive, and Allblk, has a reputation for bringing a plethora of exciting TV shows every month and, more often than not, it also produces countless new series. In the past few months, it has streamed several fan-favorite TV shows, including The Walking Dead: Dead City, Happy Valley, and Fear the Walking Dead.
While you might have missed them during the weekly premieres, you can still catch up because the newly added shows usually stay for a while before moving on to other streamers. In any case, with the month of July almost coming to an end, it is time to look ahead and see what AMC+ has to offer its subscribers who yearn for new TV shows from time to time.
