Decades after “When Harry Met Sally” asked audiences if adult men and women can be friends, yet another romantic comedy poses the same question of a contemporary collegiate crowd. However, in director Jordan Weiss’ “Sweethearts,” which revolves around two besties breaking up with their hometown romances over a holiday weekend, the time-honored query waits until the last minutes to develop, while a separate pair of screwball-comedy plotlines haven’t properly concluded. Though the film contains a talented ensemble and compelling sentiments about self-acceptance and platonic friendship, it plays like two half-baked screenplays mashed together, bound by wafer-thin connections.
Ben (Nico Hiraga) and Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) have been best friends since childhood and are determined to stick together through their adulthood, starting with attending the same college in the same dorm at Densen University. While there are several classic films dedicated to the Halloween and Christmas holidays, those set during Thanksgiving are few and far between. Enter Jordan Weiss’ and Dan Brier’s Sweethearts starring Kiernan Shipka and Nico Hiraga, a hilarious holiday rom com that arrived on Max Nov. 28.
The film follows Jamie (Shipka) and Ben (Hiraga) as they realize, in their first semester of college, that they need to break up with their high school sweethearts Simon (Charlie Hall) and Claire (Ava DeMary) respectively because the relationships are holding them back. Their best friend Palmer (Caleb Hearon) offers to host a small soiré the night before Thanksgiving where they plan to break the news, but chaos ensues as a night of parties, absinthe, drugs and more combine to create a perfect storm of events.

There are already multiple movies about that first, chaotic weekend when college freshmen return home. And the standards aren’t especially high; the genre includes the Pauly Shore comedy “Son-in-Law” and the Hallmark-ian romance “Turkey Drop.” But “Sweethearts,” a sex comedy lacking in sex, silliness or subversion — just one would do — barely clears the bar.
Kiernan Shipka and Nico Hiraga (“Moxie”) are Jamie and Ben, platonic besties who head off to college together. They’ve committed to long-distance relationships with their high school sweethearts, but soon realize they’d rather be single. So, like millions of students before them, they decide to break up with their partners during Thanksgiving weekend.
After a few listless mishaps, they return home to Ohio where the unsuspecting Claire (Ava DeMary) and Simon (Charlie Hall) await. Jamie is convinced the break has to happen immediately, so they enlist their other Bff, Palmer (Caleb Hearon), to help organize the night.

It’s generally never a good idea, as a romantic comedy, to invoke “When Harry Met Sally” and remind audience members that they could be watching an influential all-time great example of the form instead of one of its many derivatives. But “Sweethearts,” a new Max original, earns its shout-out to the Nora Ephron classic better than most. At the tail end of the Thanksgiving comedy, male lead Ben (Nico Hiraga) sits down with his parents after dinner to watch the 1989 Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan vehicle, only to find the iconic “Men and women can’t be friends” speech hits a bit too close to home.
That’s a question that’s been hanging over his relationship with Bff Jamie (Kiernan Shipka of “Mad Men” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” fame) for a while now. Tight-knit since eighth grade and now attending the same college, the two do practically...

Warning: This article includes minor spoilers for Sweethearts.
Sweethearts includes a cast led by star Kiernan Shipka but is otherwise comprised of up-and-coming actors who show their potential. The Max original movie puts a twist on the holiday rom-com by centering it on Thanksgiving a holiday thats otherwise been ignored by the genre. Though Sweethearts reviews are mixed, the movie will appeal to fans of the anti-rom-com which follows rom-com tropes and formulas while subverting expectations and challenging the realistic nature of the genre. The films in this sub-genre have messier main characters, show imperfect love, and have different conclusions about popular themes.
Sweethearts hits all the right notes for the anti-rom-com, exploring two best friends as they make a pact to break up with their high school sweethearts. Part of the reason the movie thrives is because of the incredible cast that creates likably unlikable characters. The most recognizable name is Kiernan Shipka,...

“Sweethearts” follows Jamie and Ben, two best friends who navigate the turbulent seas of freshman year at Densen College. They are dedicated to maintaining long-distance relationships with high school sweethearts Simon and Claire. Still, they soon find that these connections are more limiting than beneficial. Jamie finds herself faking interest on phone calls. At the same time, Ben struggles to participate in campus life while being constantly digitally monitored by his girlfriend.
After a wild night out with their roommates, the two plan to break up with their significant others on Thanksgiving Eve. This is more than just breaking relationships; it’s about reclaiming their college experience and personal independence. The strategy appears easy but proves to be anything but pushing them into a series of comedic and emotionally difficult situations.
Palmer, Jamie, and Ben’s high school companions, who took a gap year in France, weave his way into their journey.

Kiernan Shipka showed up in two very different, very major movies this year, but there's a fair chance you may have missed her in both. Spoiler alert for the first 15 minutes of Twisters, but by the time you may have processed that the bubbly, blonde weather enthusiast was Shipka, she was probably long gone.
