A 21-year-old tradition is giving tech companies a chance to roll out new layers of protection for users under the age of 18. For Safer Internet Day, new teen-focused safeguards arrived on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram.
Safer Internet Day began in 2004 as part of the European Union’s SafeBorders project. Two decades later, the annual February 11 observance has taken on a new meaning: Major tech platforms use it as a megaphone to advertise their efforts to protect the mental health of children and teens.
Last February, YouTube used Safer Internet Day to announce a supervised browsing experience that lets parents keep tabs on their children’s internet activity. A year later, YouTube has announced a partnership with The Jed Foundation to commission videos for teens about mental health. The creators behind those videos include some familiar names from the YouTube community, including Tim Chantarangsu, Cassandra Bankson, Ashley Yi, and Dylan Lemay.

Jeffrey Bui has big ideas.
“I’m always a visionary person,” he says, and that’s how he comes up with the concepts that have helped drive his channel from 200,000 subscribers to nearly 2 million in just four months.
But, he says, going from vision to execution can be tough–and that’s where his team comes in. And, he stresses, he’s always, always had a team. Even in his old career, he had a team. Back before he did content, he was a business operations manager at a sales company. There, his team was 20 people strong, but despite his success, he kept finding himself thinking, “Wow, why am I here?...

YouTube has canceled “Escape the Night” after four seasons, ending its longest-running original series, Variety has confirmed. The semi-scripted murder-mystery series was hosted by Joey Graceffa, who presided over the retro mega-collab in which a famous YouTuber got killed off in each episode.
But Graceffa isn’t letting “Escape the Night” fade to black.
In a video posted Tuesday, he said Season 5 of the show was not happening “this year” but he left the door open for the series to return (which would be under different auspices now that YouTube has dropped it). “I don’t know when there will be a Season 5,” Graceffa said, saying it was unable to go forward because Covid-19 production shutdowns.
Graceffa didn’t say that “Escape the Night” was canceled. However, a source tells Variety that YouTube declined to pick up “Etn” Season 5.

Escape The Night -- the longest-running original in YouTube history -- has just announced the star-studded cast set to headline its four season.
The upcoming season of the murder-mystery reality series will be an all-star season -- meaning that past cast members who failed to win will set to return for a second chance at survival. In Escape The Night, premiering July 11, YouTube creators take on different personas from a bygone era, and then compete in various challenges in order to remain the last one standing as various supernatural threats loom. The show often features quirky and comedic creators, given that it calls for a great deal of improvisation.
Joining Graceffa -- who serves as host of the show -- this season are: Rosanna Pansino (who will portray ‘The Socialite’), Alex Wassabi ('The Aviator'), Timothy DeLaGhetto ('The Con Man'), DeStorm Power ('The Enforcer'), Justine Ezarik ('The...

If you're single, out of gift ideas, or just plain hungry this Valentine's Day, you don't need roses -- you need lemon pepper. That's the philosophy espoused by Wingstop, which turned to a trio of social media influences in order to promote the toll-free hotline it established this February 14th.
By calling into Wingstop's hotline at 1-844-wing-luv, both lovestruck and lonely individuals can glean chicken-fried wisdom from one of America's top wing chains. One big piece of advice is as follows: Buy a lot of wings. To show the romantic potential of its cuisine, Wingstop teamed up with ad agency Barkley, which employs online video notable Austin Null as its director of influencers and partnerships, for a social media-based campaign.
The partnership resulted in three Instagram videos, one each from Timothy DeLaGhetto, Spice Adams, and Sasha Merci. The clips share a general theme: Order wings for your loved one,...

Two of the most popular YouTube stars in the world are two months away from splashing into the film world. On September 26th, the film Laid In America, which stars Caspar Lee and Olajide “Ksi” Olatunji, will premiere in the UK. It will make its stateside debut the following day.
Laid in America, which we first heard about more than a year ago, follows its two stars as they descend upon Yankee shores and get into all sorts of trouble. The film is being billed as a raunchy teen comedy, and its plot, which can be summed up as “two guys try to lose their virginity on the night before they leave the United States,” is reminiscent of the enduring 1999 film American Pie.
Like many of the other so-called “influencer films” that star digital media personalities in feature-length productions, Laid in America will feature a supporting cast filled with Lee and Ksi’s colleagues.

One of the key elements to success on digital platforms like YouTube is engagement with audiences. Without a strong connection to fans, creators can't expect to efficiently grow their reach, message, or even quality of content. And no one knows that better than Maker Studios' Chief Audience Officer Chris Williams.
At Maker, Williams' job is to grow the network's audience across the globe through strategies like partnerships and network development. With over 55,000 creators, Maker routinely pulls in ten billion video views per month. While Williams can claim some responsibility for helping Maker achieve those numbers, a lot of the credit can also go to Maker talent partners who work tirelessly to create content worthy of their fans' support, trust, and continued attention.

The trend of feature films led by YouTube stars is not strictly an American phenomenon. British YouTube star Olajide Olatunji, known online as Ksi, and South African vlogger Caspar Lee will star in Laid In America, an upcoming feature film whose cast is filled with YouTube stars.
As TheVideoInk, Laid In America began filming last month and promises exactly what it says in the title. Ksi and Lee will play a pair of friends who cross the pond in an attempt to score with Stateside women. The supporting cast is full of YouTube stars: Timothy DeLaGhetto, Josh Leyva, and Josh Golden will all make appearances.
Laid in America is helmed by a notable YouTube channel as well. Bad Weather Films, a sketch comedy hub, is directing the film and co-producing it alongside Max Gottlieb.
Ksi and Caspar are frequent collaborators who are also two of the biggest stars on YouTube.

Talent agencies have their eyes on digital stars, and the latest creator to benefit from this trend is Adande Thorne. The 26-year-old YouTube content creator, who posts videos under the username Swoozie, has signed with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Swoozie, who has more than 2.7 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, is best known for his animation-fueled vlogs, in which he explores topics like school, love, and sex. He is also an accomplished gamer who appeared on SyFy's Wcg Ultimate Gamer, a reality show that ran between 2009 and 2010.
When YouTube stars sign with Hollywood talent agencies, it usually signals interest in traditional media projects. That seems to be part of part of Swoozie's plan, too; as THR notes, he is one of the content creators who will appear in Bob Thunder: Digital Assassin, an upcoming feature film.

Earlier this year, we covered fitness powerhouse Beachbody's "YouTube test group," where a set of top online video creators - including Jack Douglass, Bart Baker, Olga Kay, and Shira Lazar - collectively dropped over 100 pounds and 85 inches by way of Tony Horton's P90 program. The before and after photos seemed too good to be true—commenters cried 'air brush' and 'spray tan.' So when we caught wind of a new class of YouTubers for Beachbody's 21 Day Fix Extreme program with trainer Autumn Calabrese, we had to get an inside look at the process to make sure it was legit.
The new group underwent back-to-back twenty-one day programs and featured Jennifer Veal, SourceFed stars Lee Newton and Steve Zaragoza, Timothy DeLaGhetto, Rick Carter, Shane Dawson, and yours truly. Now the last time I covered a story as an embedded journalist, I did a ridealong with the Good Cops, and things went horribly wrong.

Creative Artists Agency (CAA) is on a YouTube talent acquisition kick. Only a week after adding YouTube star Timothy DeLaGhetto, the Hollywood talent agency has signed digital celebrities Kian Lawley and Jc Caylen.
CAA will help develop both digital and traditional opportunities for Caylen and Lawley (the latter is already starring in the upcoming film The Chosen and has previously participated in Hollywood marketing stunts). These opportunities will encompass deals like film and television, endorsements, TV commercials, in-person appearances, publishing, and more. According to Variety, Andrew Graham of AwesomenessTV’s Big Frame will still be responsible for managing the digital duo.
Lawley and Caylen were previous members of the YouTube supergroup Our2ndLife, which officially disbanded its channel in December 2014 (popular member Connor Franta had already left for personal reasons). When Rhett and Link used a rap battle format to encourage their fans not to text and drive, they showed how public safety campaigns can utilize the YouTube community as a vital tool for delivering messages to young viewers. With that in mind, feast your eyes upon "Left Swipe Dat," a ridiculous new music video that features Becky G, Fifth Harmony, eight popular YouTube and Vine stars, and an anti-smoking message at its heart.
"Left Swipe Dat" is the latest release from Truth, the anti-tobacco campaign that specifically targets young smokers. The music video appeals to its young audience by restating a simple fact: On average, Tinder users prefer non-smokers. Want to get your matches to "swipe right" on the dating app? Take the cigarette out of your mouth.
Truth conveys this information in perhaps the most bonkers way possible. Harley Morenstein eats a huge mountain of food while delivering a topical verse.

Timothy DeLaGhetto, who has more than 2.6 million subscribers on YouTube, will spill some male secrets by joining the Guy Code cast.
On Guy Code, cast members--including comedians like Pete Davidson and personalities like Charlamagne Tha God--share the protocol for social interactions among men. The series has become a big hit for MTV2, and DeLaGhetto (real name Tim Chantarangsu) will fit in well, as some of his most popular videos talk about the differences between men and women.
DeLaGhetto has already established himself as a familiar face on MTV2. He is also a cast member on Wild N Out, where he has spent the last two seasons dissing Nick Cannon and his cadre of celebrity guests.

At the beginning of 2014, YouTube and DreamWorks began an experiment in news programming by announcing YouTube Nation, a daily web series that spotlighted a combination of trending and under-the-radar videos from its titular site. Now, YouTube's partnership with DreamWorks is set to expire, and the two companies have decided not to renew YouTube Nation. As a result, the December 5th episode of the show will be its last. YouTube Nation was conceived as a means through which YouTube could offer support to its creative community. Each episode was featured on the YouTube Spotlight page, which gave the series exposure to more than 22 million subscribers. This exposure allowed YouTube Nation to rack up many subscribers of its own: One million in its first four months and more than two million overall. As the channel grew, it expanded beyond its basic news format. For instance, a recent episode featured Timothy DeLaGhetto as...

The series is hosted by Elliott Morgan of ex-SourceFed fame. Each episode starts with eight different contenders fighting for a spot on digital Rushmore within a chosen category. Two guest panelists eliminate the first few options with Morgan, and then the panelists each have 10 seconds to argue why their choices should be in the final tally. The entire group chooses the fourth item together. The show will feature such panelists as Lee Newton, Kermit the Frog, Joe Bereta, and Timothy DeLaGhetto. Off The Top, which will be live-streamed on Ahlquist's YouTube channel, will feature improvised rap battles and a game called "pain-prov", but the most unique and exciting element of the show will be a series of improv games that will begin with suggestions from the Internet and span three continents. As with Comedy Central's new web series Social Scene, fans will be able to suggest scene ideas through Twitter and other social media platforms. Once Ahlquist and his team of La-based comedians receive suggestions, they will act out a scene in front of a live audience at YouTube Space La.
