There’s a moment halfway through Season 1 of Steven Knight’s East End caper “A Thousand Blows” where criminal mastermind Mary Carr (Erin Doherty) takes rising boxer Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) for a posh night out; she does this ostensibly to introduce him to a promoter (Ziggy Heath) who can get Hez into more society-friendly exhibitions — colorful belts and boxing gloves are just now replacing bare-knuckle brawls at the start of this Hulu series — in exchange for his help in pulling off a heist. What convinces the Jamaican transplant, though, is seeing a performer (Jessica Reeve) do a trapeze act and cast the whole room under her spell. Dressed all in silver like a cross between a heron and a Greek goddess, she has power over everyone else at that moment, and her skin color isn’t something the English are looking down on but looking up at.

Plot: Inspired by the true life stories of a group of characters battling for survival in the brutal East End of London in the 1880s. Hezekiah Moscow and Alec Munroe, best friends on the run from Jamaica, find themselves thrust into the criminal underbelly of London’s thriving bare-knuckle boxing scene. As Hezekiah finds fortune and fame through the art of pugilism, he attracts the attention of the infamous Queen of the Forty Elephants, Mary Carr, who sets about exploiting his talents to further her criminal enterprise. Meanwhile the menacing and self-declared emperor of the East End boxing world, Sugar Goodson, determines to destroy Hezekiah whose ambitions to fight in the West End threatens everything he has built. What ensues is a battle of the old world against the new.

The next show from the creator of one of the biggest Netflix shows ever just got an exciting look at the first images from A Thousand Blows, the upcoming Disney+ series starring Stephen Graham as a Victorian London Boxer. In addition to Graham, A Thousand Blows will also star Erin Doherty and Malachi Kirby, as well as Jason Tobin, Ziggy Heath, and James Nelson-Joyce. A Thousand Blows follows Kirby's Hezekiah Moscow, a young man from Jamaica who gets drawn into London's dangerous criminal underworld and comes in contact with Mary Carr (Doherty), the leader of a legendary all-female gang known as The Forty Elephants. As Hezekiah becomes more experienced in criminal dealings, he runs into Sugar Goodson (Graham), a seasoned veteran, and the two become locked into a dangerous rivalry that follows them through more than just boxing.

Exclusive: Johnny Flynn spent several days studying Anthony Hopkins’ every gesture on the set of the film One Life, in which both portray the same man, Sir Nicholas “Nicky” Winton, a London stockbroker responsible for helping 669 children flee to safety from the Nazis in World War II.

Hopkins plays Winton in the later years of Winton’s life, at a time when he was gripped by guilt because of the children he wasn’t able to save. With help from his mother and other volunteers, Sir Nicholas persuaded British officials to allow Czech children into the UK, including finding them foster families.

Director James Hawes explained how he filmed all of Hopkins’ scenes in one batch for the See-Saw Films, BBC Films and Mbk production.

Warner Bros UK has released the official trailer for the upcoming film One Life, which tells the true story of Sir Nicholas Winton, a man who rescued hundreds of children from the Nazis during WWII. The film stars Anthony Hopkins as Winton and shows two different stages of his life, with Johnny Flynn portraying his younger counterpart. It also features a star-studded cast including Helena Bonham Carter and Romola Garai. One Life will premiere at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival and will later be shown at the London Film Festival. It is directed by James Hawes and written by Lucinda Coxon and Nick Drake. The UK release is set for January 1st, 2024.

It’s 1993, and there’s only one way for a curvy, bright, funny, working-class sixteen year old (Beanie Feldstein) to break out of her tiny, crowded house in Wolverhampton, and go on the somehow noble sex-quest she desires – to reinvent herself as swashbuckling, top-hat-wearing rock critic Dolly Wilde, and explode all over London. Variety has been given the exclusive first-look image for coming-of-age comedy “How to Build a Girl,” which Protagonist Pictures is selling at Afm.

The movie is directed by Coky Giedroyc, and stars “Lady Bird’s” Beanie Feldstein, Alfie Allen, best known for “Game of Thrones,” Paddy Considine and Sarah Solemani. Adapted by Caitlin Moran from her semi-autobiographical novel, it is set in 1993 and centers on a “fat, bright, funny” working-class 16-year-old girl trying to break free from her provincial town in England, and reinvent herself as a “swashbuckling top-hat-wearing rock critic” in London.

Other cast in the film include Laurie Kynaston, Joanna Scanlan, Arinzé Kene, Frank Dillane, Tadhg Murphy and Ziggy Heath. Emma Thompson and Chris O’Dowd have cameo roles.

Produced by Alison Owen and Debra Hayward at Monumental Pictures, the pic was co-developed by Film4, which is co-financing with Tango. Lionsgate will distribute in the U.K.
