It's unfortunate how, especially when it comes to horror movies, some of the best projects have years go by before they're actually appreciated by audiences. From cult classics to ingenious allegories, so many films have the potential to impact thousands yet are seen by so few due to issues like bad marketing — or, in the case of Raging Grace, confusing streaming sites. Directed by Paris Zarcilla, it follows a Filipina immigrant struggling to make a life for her daughter in the UK, taking on random roles that barely pay her enough to survive before finding a job that seems like the answer to all of her problems.

It’s been another blockbuster year for horror, but then again it always feels like that. Superhero fatigue has set in and major franchise pictures haven’t returned as expected, but horror, as ever, always seems to reach new heights. The news in 2023 may have been a load of gout, but the horror has been pure gold.
So, without further ado, here is a list of my top 10 of 2023.
RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop
Arrow Films, Vinegar Syndrome and others who have perfected the art of producing feature-length behind the scenes documentaries really have their work cut out for them thanks to RoboDoc. RoboDoc has broken the mould by creating an in-depth documentary that takes you through the entire film scene-by-scene. When an undocumented Filipina immigrant takes a job as a carer for a terminally ill man, she learns that he, his family and his house may be harbouring a dark secret. Director Paris Zarcilla’s debut feature Raging Grace feels like Rebecca meets His House, with all the rich, manipulative gothic overtones of the former and the pertinent social commentary and visual flair of the latter. It’s a completely captivating work grounded by two wonderful central performances by Max Eigenmann and Jaeden Boadilla as Joy, the carer, and her daughter Grace, respectively. With Raging Grace arriving in UK cinemas on 29th December, Dn caught up with Zarcilla – who last featured on our pages with gymnastics-set sibling rivalry drama Pommel – to talk through the personal experiences that informed the narrative of his SXSW Grand Jury prize-winning film, the disturbing, character-driven shot design that creates its perturbing mood, and the disappointing...

Billed as a “coming of rage” story, writer/director Paris Zarcilla’s genre-bending debut feature, Raging Grace, arrives in limited theaters today. The gothic tale leans into psychological and the supernatural, but all of it is deeply personal to the filmmaker. And it’s only the beginning of a planned “Rage” trilogy.
The film follows “Joy, an undocumented Filipino immigrant who is struggling to do the best she can for her daughter when she secures the perfect job: taking care of an extremely wealthy but terminal old man. The new position pays well and guarantees a roof over their heads. But very soon, Joy and her daughter Grace start to realize everything is not as it seems. Something is festering beneath the surface, threatening all they have worked for.”
Bloody Disgusting spoke with the BIFA-nominated filmmaker about his feature, where he candidly discussed the personal inspiration behind the film and plans for a thematic trilogy.

Raging Grace tackles horrors that many immigrant workers face, highlighting prejudice, racism, and colonialism. The film's eerie atmosphere, jump scares, and haunting score create an immersive experience. While it may not be the best horror of the year, Raging Grace tells a powerful story about immigrant workers and their struggles.
Steeped in its haunting atmosphere, Raging Grace is an effective horror/thriller that tackles the prejudice, racism, and colonialism that many immigrant workers face in modern society. British-born Filipino writer-director Paris Zarcilla combines competent jump scares and an immersive soundscape to highlight the terror of what it sometimes means to live as an immigrant.
Using traditional Filipino instruments in its score, audiences will become instantly enshrouded in the films' unnerving atmosphere. Elevated by its small roster of complex characters, Raging Grace boasts a captivating story full of endless twists and turns that drive the story along unpredictably. It is a slow-burn,...

"You should've just stopped at cleaning toilets." Brainstorm Media has revealed the first official trailer for Raging Grace, an indie horror thriller made by filmmaker Paris Zarcilla - making his feature directorial debut. The film premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, where it won the Grand Jury Prize as well as the Thunderbird Rising Award. Arriving on VOD to watch this December. An undocumented Filipina immigrant and her daughter become ensnared by horrifying truth while working as a caretaker for a terminally ill old man. As they take care of this strange man, they unwittingly become entangled in a chilling secret. Starring Max Eigenmann, Jaeden Boadilla, Leanne Best, and David Hayman as Mr. Garrett. It also won awards at the Neufchâtel Fantasia Film Festival, including the Audience Award. While this story isn't particularly unique nowadays (also see Sundance winner Nanny), there is clearly something going on in this.

Consistent comparison to Parasite is the dream of any sales agent and producer in 2023, which surely made those behind Raging Grace awfully pleased. Solidifying it a whole lot more was the film putting that money where its mouth is: at this year’s South By Southwest it nabbed the Grand Jury prize and special notice for writer-director Paris Zarcilla. Riding these coattails, the film will open on December 1 and (naturally) there is now a trailer.

Brainstorm Media and Music Box Films have jointly picked up the North American rights to Paris Zarcilla’s horror movie Raging Grace.
A Dec. 8 theatrical release is being planned for the debut feature from British-born Filipino writer-director Zarcilla that bowed at South by Southwest, where it won two grand jury awards for best film and best debut.
Raging Grace follows an undocumented Filipino immigrant and single mom who works as the caretaker for a haunted British estate. As the mother and her daughter care for a terminally ill elderly man, they get entangled in a chilling secret.
As a horror flick, Raging Grace also explores themes of race, power, identity and the haunting consequences of hidden truths.
The movie stars Max Eigenmann, newcomer Jaeden Paige Boadilla, Leanne Best and David Hayman and is produced by Chi Thai.
“So rarely is a film so successful as both a social critique and a genuinely scary movie.

Raging Grace has already featured at a number of festivals this year, most notably SXSW where it picked up the Narrative Feature Jury Award and Thunderbird Rising Award for Best Debut, but sometimes the buzz around a movie doesn’t quite live up to the hype, which can leave you wondering what all the fuss was about. However, when it comes to Raging Grace, all plaudits are fully deserved.
Raging Grace tells the story of Joy, an undocumented Filipina woman living in the UK with her daughter, Grace. In a desperate attempt to gain citizenship quickly she saves all the money she can from her housekeeping jobs. Day after day she toils whilst listening to the ignorant, offensive and demeaning comments from the people she works for. Joy must also juggle her day job with being a full-time mother to her mischievous daughter.
But, one day, Joy gets a break.

‘Raging Grace’ FrightFest Review – Gothic Horror Mines Suspense and Terror from Immigrant Experience
Writer/Director Paris Zarcilla’s feature debut, Raging Grace joins films like His House and No One Gets Out Alive in examining the horrors of immigration from within the walls of a haunted house. Instead of ghosts from the past or creatures, though, Zarcilla spins a taut tale of gothic horror combined with personal drama that sets it apart. The focus on its characters means a slower-coiling horror story, but one that surprises with unexpected detours.

Housecleaning is the only work she can successfully find as a single mom to feisty young daughter Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla). Raging Grace (2023) by Paris Zarcilla
There's quite a lot to like with “Raging Grace.” Among its brighter aspects is a solid central setup by writer/director Zarcilla that makes for a wholly engaging scenario. The first half explores quite heavily and naturally the desperation Joy feels at keeping her life in order, despite it all crumbling down around her. This ranges from the struggles of finding housing for her and Grace, facing racism and misogynistic abuse for the work she does, and the natural indignation of being a single mother. This gives the new job opportunity with Katharine such a sense of importance for Joy which she can use as a means of escaping this lifestyle only to end up stumbling upon a far more dangerous threat inside Katharine's house which gets uncovered slowly during her employment. This is handled incredibly well for a great start to things. (Don Anelli...

Debutante director Paris Zarcilla delivers a fiery first feature in Raging Grace, the story of an immigrant woman who takes a much needed service job in the wrong house. Starring Max Eigenmann as Joy and Jaeden Paige Boadilla as her precocious daughter Grace, the film puts a chilling spin on the dangers faced by migrant workers searching for a better life. There’s nothing that Joy wants more than UK citizenship. A Filipina immigrant working as a housekeeper, she makes all of her money under the table. It isn’t much, though, and she and Grace are barely scraping by. If she can get her citizenship, she can come out of the shadows, maybe open a bank account, get a place for the two of them to...

Jaeden Paige Boadilla in Raging Grace
A nail-biting thriller which looks at what happens when Filipina immigrant Joy (Max Eigenmann) and her young daughter, Grace (Jaeden Paige Boadilla), discover something seriously amiss in the home of a wealthy employer, Raging Grace combines elements of Gothic mystery with a sharp critique of racism and class-based exploitation in contemporary British society. It’s the work of writer/director Paris Zarcilla and producer Chi Thai, and it won a host of awards at SXSW, kicking off a highly successful tour of the festival circuit. Most recently, it screened at the Fantasia International Film Festival, and that’s where I got talking to Paris and Chi.
“It was written back in 2020 – a very chaotic year, I think, for many of us,” Paris tells me. “There was an opportunity to begin interrogating just who we actually are in this world. I really started thinking about my own identity,...

Raging Grace won big at the SXSW Film & TV Festival film festival last month, taking home both the Thunderbird Rising Award Winner and the top prize of Jury Award in the Narrative Feature competition. Written and directed by Paris Zarcilla and produced by Chi Thai, the film served not only as their feature film debut but also as the first-ever British Filipino production. The story follows a single Filipina mom named Joy who works as a housekeeper as she tries to save up for a visa to stay in the UK with her daughter Grace.
Max Eigenmann and Jaeden Paige Boadilla play the dynamic mother-and-daughter duo, and their relationship is both the heart and highlight of Raging Grace. Everything Joy does is out of love for her daughter, in the hopes of providing her a better life, and it's impossible not to root for them both to overcome their circumstance.

The curtain has dropped on another South by Southwest, but this was no ordinary year for the Austin-based tech and media event. Two days after the festival started, “Everything Everywhere All At Once” claimed seven Oscars and gave it the bonafide of having premiered a Best Picture winner (2022’s slate also produced a Best Actress contender in “To Leslie’s” Andrea Riseborough). Now considered an “Oscar launchpad,” SXSW unsurprisingly attracted more than its usual share of attention.

Austin, TX – The SXSW Conference and Festivals wrapped on March 19th, after 10 days of magic and Austin wackiness, showcasing film, TV, interactive, conferences, interviews and music. The Film & TV Fest named “Raging Grace” as the top Narrative Feature and “Grown” as top TV Pilot.
“Raging Grace” was written and directed by Paris Zarcilla, telling the story of a Filipina house cleaner and her young daughter, with the jury noting its “heady blend of horror, history, and midnight humor announcing the arrival of an exciting new filmmaking talent.” The TV Pilot “Grown” focuses on a teenage boy attempting to move forward after losing his father, and the jury said it was “a coming-of-age story told with heart and visually realized with polish and verve.”
