David Fincher's 2014 psychological thriller, Gone Girl, is set to drop on Hulu on April 1.
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by author Gillian Flynn, Fincher's Gone Girl centers around Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck), a man who becomes the center of a media circus after his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) disappears on the night of their fifth wedding anniversary. As Nick spends more time in the media spotlight, his apathetic nature and the circumstantial physical evidence against him begin to lead many to believe that Nick isn't as innocent as he proclaims. Flynn, who wrote the bestselling novel, also penned the script for the film, which received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Screenplay.
In addition to Affleck and Pike, Gone Girl also stars Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Carrie Coon, Kim Dickens, Patrick Fugit, David Clennon, Lisa Barnes, Missi Pyle, and Emily Ratajkowski. Pike earned...

The talented Amanda Seyfried (“The Dropout”), the thinking woman’s beauty, joins the hard-working, blue-collar women of crime. “Long Bright River,” the gritty Peacock limited series of eight bingeable episodes, follows in the sensible flats of investigative reporter Amy Adams in “Sharp Objects” and Jodie Foster in “True Detective: Night Country.” Please, don’t ask these women to smile.
Mickey Fitzpatrick (Seyfried), amateur English horn player and Penn dropout, is an unlikely beat cop in the rough Kensington area of Philadelphia where she grew up. It’s a low-income, working-class neighborhood with a strong Irish American community derailed by deindustrialization in the 1960s.
On the Philly streets, women — sex workers and drug addicts — are turning up dead. Bagged and tossed, the predominantly male authorities remain staunchly unbothered. These overdose victims, in their eyes, got what they bargained for, what they deserved. Garbage in, garbage out.

Liam Neeson is, if nothing else, a very candid interview subject. Sometimes he's candid to a problematic fault. Regardless of how you feel about the man, however, you cannot accuse him of giving canned answers, which is what renders too many interviews unworthy of a reader's time.
With a film acting career that spans over 40 years, stretching back to his portrayal of the knight Gawain in John Boorman's Arthurian "Excalibur," the Irish-born Neeson has put together a career that prompts many questions. He went Hollywood early, and seemed stuck in a rut acting in forgettable films like "Suspect," "Satisfaction," and "The Good Mother." I didn't really take measure of him as a performer until he played Patrick Swayze's vengeful, incredibly lethal hillbilly brother in "Next of Kin." His high-pitched voice and not-entirely-hidden Irish lilt is actually perfect for an Appalachian hill person, and even though the film is just a studio programmer,...

Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl was one of the biggest thrillers of the 2010s, conquering the bestseller lists and receiving rave reviews. The David Fincher movie adaptation with Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pikebrought it even more attention, delivering one of the all-time best female villains in cinema. The book hooked millions of readers with its intricate plot, unreliable narrators, and portrait of domestic darkness, inspiring a lot of authors to riff on the same recipe.

I grew up in the Buckeye State. Ohio is notorious for its temperamental weather, as any day can be beautifully sunny and warm, and the next can be freezing cold and rainy. We have the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cedar Point and Kings Island, a deep-seated rivalry between The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan, and we have the Grassman. There’s a lot for folks to love about Ohio. But, the little heart-shaped dot on the eastern edge of the American Midwest also has a dark side, with a notable connection to the true crime world.

Gritty investigations and glamorous getaways; these are the must-watch murder mysteries on Max.
Murder mystery shows are one of my favorite genres because they turn TV watching into an active experience. You’re not just sitting back - you’re piecing together clues, reading between the lines, and sometimes even solving the case before the characters do. It’s one of the few genres that fully engages your brain while keeping you entertained. And when it comes to the best streamer for murder mysteries, Max takes the crown. Whether you’re into gritty, slow-burn crime dramas that dig deep into the dark side of humanity or lighter, more comedic whodunits that mix laughs with mystery, Max has it all. Here’s why I think it’s the ultimate destination for murder mystery fans.

Amy Adams, the beloved star of films like Arrival and Catch Me If You Can, has joined the cast of the Apple TV+ series Cape Fear. Alongside Javier Bardem, Adams is headlining the series, which offers a new take on Martin Scorsese's divisive '90s thriller starring Robert De Niro.
Per Variety, Adams will star alongside Bardem in the TV version of the 1991 thriller, which starred Nick Nolte, Robert De Niro, Jessica Lange, and Juliette Lewis. As with Scorsese's film, the new Cape Fear is based on the John D. MacDonald novel The Executioners, published in 1961. The story follows attorney Tom Bowden, who withholds evidence to get violent psychopath Max Cady sent to prison. Over the course of a gripping and emotional three episodes, the people of New Orleans recount their past, extoll their present and lean into the future of what they and their beloved city survived and have become 20 years later. The series sets the stage for a tragedy — whose man-made elements expose the systemic governmental neglect that led to the city being defenseless in the face of the storm — and Katrina’s devastating impact that changed New Orleans irreparably. Science fiction has always pushed the boundaries of cinema to its absolute limit, and plenty of classic black-and-white movies still have the power to entertain and enthrall viewers to this day. From technological marvels that utilized special effects that were massively ahead of their time to thought-provoking psychological stories whose narrative never lost its relevance, there are many movies, even from the black-and-white silent era, that can be enjoyed just as well by modern viewers.
Many of the best black-and-white sci-fi releases were produced during periods of great political and social upheaval and powerfully reflected the society out of which they were created. With terrifying alien creatures representing fears of the unknown or the dire consequences of technological progress, classic sci-fi films often convey themes that remain incredibly relevant to this day. The 2013 British thriller Utopia was one of the very best TV shows of the 2010s, and its cancelation was lamentable. It is a must-watch for thriller fans and anyone seeking some truly original storytelling. It is rare for original TV scripts to bear the hallmarks of such stark originality, but Utopia sprung from an original idea by Huw Kennair-Jones, Mark Aldridge, and Clare McDonald. The original Utopia was great, despite being scrapped after only two seasons and being followed by a distinctly average American remake created by Gillian Flynn.
Written by Dennis Kelly and John Donnelly, the original Utopia was heavily stylized and uniquely so. Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill displayed an almost similar approach to violence, color, and character design. A graphic novel that some believed predicted the future was at the heart of the conspiracy in the show, with government officials and secretive individuals after it. Utopia's...

Hot on the heels of the news that several of his films, including Seven, Fight Club, Zodiac, and Panic Room are getting the 4K Uhd makeover treatment, another David Fincher feature is getting a boost on streaming. A full decade ago, the celebrated filmmaker’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel, Gone Girl, received plenty of acclaim from audiences and critics alike, with Hulu audiences currently keeping the movie off the lam and on the platform’s Top 15. With an established and highly regarded cast that includes Rosamund Pike (Saltburn), Ben Affleck (Good Will Hunting), Tyler Perry (The Six Triple Eight), Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age), and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), it’s no surprise that the movie is one of the most beloved psychological thrillers of the last two decades.

Two of Ben Affleck's best movies of the 2010s have landed on a major streaming chart. Ben Affleck is a major movie star whose works have cumulatively grossed more than $6 billion worldwide. Although he began his career as a child actor and starred in well-known early 1990s projects including Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused, his breakout role came when he and Matt Damon co-wrote and co-starred in the 1997 Gus Van Sant movie Good Will Hunting, which earned them a joint Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
Other Ben Affleck and Matt Damon collaborations have hit screens since their original success, including The Last Duel, Dogma, and Air. However, Affleck has also become well-known outside of that partnership, both as an actor and director. One of his most prominent onscreen roles has been playing Batman in DC Extended Universe movies including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

For all the shortcomings that the now-defunct Dceu sustained, one thing that Zack Snyder mostly got right was the casting, whether it be Henry Cavill’s Superman or Ben Affleck’s Batman. Interestingly, like most Batman actors, Affleck wasn’t initially seen as a good choice for the Caped Crusader, and even though his version of the character left a lot to be desired on the physical front, the actor nailed the role overall.

After her performance in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, it's clear Sophia Lillis should be getting so much more work – and that a sequel needs to happen. Since her breakout in It: Chapter One, Sophia Lillis' movie and TV roles have been steady and diverse, but none have been as much fun as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' shapeshifting druid, Doric. The D&d movie just confirms what those who have been paying attention have known all along: Sophia Lillis should be a bigger star.
Lillis was the best part of the It movies, a standout in the aforementioned Honor Among Thieves, mesmerizing in the indie folk horror Gretel & Hansel, and most recently appeared in the ever-whimsical Wes Anderson's Asteroid City. Her TV projects have ranged from the adaptation of Gillian Flynn's dramatic thriller Sharp Objects to the coming-of-age fantasy comedy I Am Not Okay With This.

Gillian Flynn and David Fincher's Gone Girl is one of the most loved fictional crime stories of all time, at least in part because it draws inspiration from real-life crimes. It's not uncommon for books and movies to pull inspiration from real-life events, as plenty of fictional horror villains are based on actual serial killers. Acclaimed director Tim Burton is setting his sights on a remake of the 1950s sci-fi B-movie Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman, and there are already many exciting updates about the new project. Originally released in 1958, Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman follows a wealthy heiress named Nancy who is turned into a giant after encountering an alien being. Enraged by discovering her husband's cheating ways, Nancy then goes on a titanic rampage and destroys her town. The low-budget film was hardly high art, but it exemplified 1950s sci-fi cheesiness, and has since become a cult classic.
Like many of the best sci-fi flicks from the 1950s, Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman has been the subject of several remakes and a slew of failed remake attempts. Perhaps the most notable reimagining came with the release of the 1993 version produced by HBO and starring Daryl Hannah in the title role.

As the second season of Wednesday wraps filming, Tim Burton is coy as to whether he’ll remake Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman remake next.
After a few years where doubts were sometimes cast as to whether Tim Burton’s work had lost its captivating edge, the filmmaker’s status as a commercially successful artist has been reconfirmed. This autumn’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was a cinema hit for Warner Bros in a year where the performance of franchise sequels has been somewhat unreliable. Plus, with Wednesday, Burton has created one of the most popular shows on Netflix.
With the second season of Wednesday now having wrapped, we imagine the filmmaker might be devoting part of his mind to the next big project. Don’t expect him to talk too much about that though. Burton has been linked with a remake of the 1958 sci-fi film, Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman...

Tim Burton has been enjoying a career renaissance of late, having produced and directed the hit Netflix series Wednesday and this year's Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, which, according to IndieWire, is nearing half a billion dollars in worldwide box office grosses. During his red carpet Q&a at the Marrakech International Film Festival, Burton was asked whether or not there would be another pairing of the director and his frequent collaborator, Johnny Depp. Burton said,
"Well I'm sure there will be. I never feel like, oh, I’m going to use this and that actor... It usually has to be based on the project I’m working on. That’s what film is all about. It’s collaboration and bouncing ideas off the people around you."
The filmmaker shows no signs of slowing down, though he won't speak about any future projects he's working on at the moment. While tight-lipped about his future projects,...

Renowned filmmaker Tim Burton has shed light on Hollywood’s unpredictable nature, responding to reports regarding his involvement in a probable remake of the 1958 sci-fi classic Attack of the Fifty-Foot Woman. Burton shared insights into the emotional hurdles of working in an industry where projects are frequently uncertain until production begins at the Marrakech Film Festival.
“I have no real projects at the moment,” Burton stated. “One thing I learned very early on is that until I’m on the set doing something, I don’t know if I’m doing it.” His comments come after reports in February 2024 linked him to a remake of Gone Girl with author Gillian Flynn. Burton was cautious, recalling previous situations in which initiatives were abandoned despite significant progress.

Despite his recent resurgence with Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton has issued some caution about reports of his remaking a sci-fi classic. Burton is best known for his work in gothic-style filmmaking, having quickly established the genre penchant with 1988's Beetlejuice and carrying it on in everything from the Oscar-nominated Edward Scissorhands to his producing the stop-motion hits The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride.
In addition to his original storytelling, Burton has also frequently found himself in the director's chair for remakes and reimaginings of iconic movies and novels. Beginning with his 1999 adaptation of Sleepy Hollow, the filmmaker has largely found financial success with his takes on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Alice in Wonderland, though all have seen a variety of responses from critics. Even still, that hasn't stopped him from eyeing bringing his vision to another iconic property.

Director Tim Burton may be tight-lipped on his next project, a remake of “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman,” but during a red carpet interview at the Marrakech International Film Festival, he was forthcoming about why.
“One thing I learned very early on is until I’m actually on a set doing something, I don’t know if I’m doing it,” he told IndieWire. “I never like to talk about things too much. I’ve worked on so many projects, sometimes they happen, sometimes they don’t happen, so I don’t want to jinx anything. I mean, I was doing ‘Superman’ once. Fresh off the success Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, acclaimed filmmaker Tim Burton has been the subject of speculation surrounding his next film project. It's been widely reported that Tim Burton is set to helm a re-imagining of the 1958 cult classic Attack of the 50 Foot Woman for Warner Bros. However, during a conversation at the Marrakech Film Festival (via Deadline), Burton shared that he has, "no real projects at the moment," casting some doubt on his potential involvement.
He elaborated:
"One thing I learned very early on is that until I’m on the set doing something I don’t know if I’m doing it. I’ve had projects, I was doing a Superman once, I did another project that I worked for a year upon, and it didn’t happen. When those things happen, it’s quite traumatic, it’s quite emotional. A24 is undoubtedly one of the most popular movie studios of the modern era. They've cranked out some of the most successful films of the past few years and don't seem to be slowing down any time soon. With that said, though, not all A24 movies hit the mark with audiences and critics. A24 has been in the film game for a little over a decade, having released its first full-length feature in 2013. Since then, the studio has grown strong roots in specific areas like horror, often drawing viewers in with its particular indie film vibe and consistent blockbusters.
While horror is arguably the studio’s forte, A24 thrives in other genres, with diverse movies dominating the field almost annually. Aside from notable films like Everything Everywhere All At Once sweeping 2023’s award season, the studio has also grown iconic directors like Barbie’s Greta Gerwig. Those movies have astonishing...

The ending is the most important part of a movie. It is what creates the effects and emotions the audience is left with. Some endings imprint themselves on viewers’ minds and some continue to amaze audiences no matter how much time has passed.
Movies with cliffhangers and shocking endings that keep the audience on the edge of their seats are hard to come by. With their twisted narratives and layered plotlines, these movies make the viewers question what they think they know. They progress subtly, until the final jaw-dropping scene changes everything and has one thinking about it for days.
The ultimate element of surprise can truly make or break a film. Sometimes, a movie’s performance can be judged on how impactfully it leaves one stunned. Hence, here is a list of movies that can potentially leave one scratching their heads; ranked from better to best.

Stephen King is the perfect author to pick up when you're in the mood for horror and thriller books, but his recommendations are often must-reads too and he praised one great thriller book before it became famous. With a nickname like the "King of Horror," it shouldn't come as a surprise that King has great taste in books, movies, and shows within the genre. King often shares horror movies that he enjoys, and they tend to be standouts in the category. He has also praised great horror books like Fever House and The Troop, both of which deliver impressive scares.
With King frequently sharing what he's reading and watching, there are plenty of opportunities to dig into the stories he believes are worthwhile. And he'll sometimes highlight titles before they get big, as was the case with one Gillian Flynn thriller. Flynn has become well-known thanks to the success of Gone Girl,...

Ever since his short films and debut feature film, Steve McQueen has always had an artistic bent while expressing intense and hard-hitting stories about politics, race, sociological development, and even psychological exploration (for the most part). The best of McQueen’s films are always characterized by a hard, unflinching, uncompromising, almost detached stance and being brutally but gorgeously imparted through a mix of form and substance, with both firmly under his control. It produces a filmmaker whose filmography is diverse and fascinating, quality notwithstanding. The singular voice of the filmmaker always manages to stand out.
Two caveats are being taken while ranking this list –
While McQueen is hugely prolific as a filmmaker, ranging from features, shorts, documentaries, and even ad films, this list will only cover the ten films McQueen has directed. All the entries in the Small Axe anthology are considered individual films, rather than taking the anthology as a single entry.

From its gripping mystery to the unique way the story unfolds, a lot of fans are looking for movies like Missing to deliver similar thrills. The compelling film stars Storm Reid as June, a teenager who utilizes the full extent of her internet sleuthing abilities to try and locate her mother Grace (Nia Long). Grace had been vacationing in Colombia with her boyfriend Kevin (Ken Leung) when her sudden disappearance made national news headlines.
The fictional thriller was created as an original story by Aneesh Chaganty and Sev Ohanian. The innovative use of technology in Missing contributes to the modern "screenlife" genre in which the entire story is told through the lens of a computer, phone, or camera screen that exists in the world of the story, first seen in 2018's Searching. David Fincher is like the wizard of modern cinema who has conjured films that dig deep into the human psyche. With his brilliant and meticulous filmmaking, he has created experiences that dive deep into the gritty corners of human nature and remain unforgettable. He didn’t start small; his first film Alien 3 marked the beginning of Fincher’s obsession with atmospheric tension. Although it wasn’t a smash hit, yet it created a world of his edgy approach.

Actress Margaret Qualley has signed on to play the leading role in the new Gothic horror film “Victorian Psycho.” The psychological thriller is based on an upcoming novel of the same name being published in early 2025. It will reunite Qualley with director Zachary Wigon, who she previously worked with on the acclaimed drama “Sanctuary.”
Set in 1858 England, the story follows Winifred Notty, a young governess hired to teach the children at the isolated Ensor House. As Notty adjusts to her new role, staff at the estate begin mysteriously disappearing. This raises suspicions about Notty’s character among the property’s owners.
The screenplay was written by Virginia Feito, the author of the source novel. In the film, Qualley will portray the eccentric and disturbed Notty. Speaking about the project, Qualley said she is excited to collaborate again with Wigon and explore the “twisted world” of the story. Wigon expressed enthusiasm...

No, Ben Affleck apparently did not shut down filming on "Gone Girl" because he, a lifelong Boston Red Sox devotee, staunchly refused to don a Yankees cap during a scene.
Back in 2021, Affleck's on-screen twin sister Carrie Coon — who played Margot Dunne to Affleck's Nick Dunne in "Gone Girl" — set the record straight and claimed that she doesn't think that whole fracas ever actually happened. At least, if there was some sort of issue, she doesn't remember it (and it should be said here that she is not in the scene where Affleck would have had to wear the dreaded Yankees hat).
While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" and other projects, Carrie Coon addressed the rumor about her 2014 project with Affleck. "I do not recall a four-day shutdown over a hat," she told reporter Brian Davids. "So I think that might've been a touch of exaggeration, though they are both very passionate.

HBO's Sharp Objects is set in the perfectly American small-town of Wind Gap, Missouri, but as a fictional location, the miniseries had to be filmed elsewhere. Based on the novel Sharp Objects by author Gillian Flynn, the 2018 HBO miniseries follows Camille Preaker (Amy Adams), a crime reporter who has recently been discharged from a psychiatric hospital after struggling with alcoholism. To get back on her feet, Camille returns to her quintessentially middle-American hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri to solve a new case.
There is no lack of charming fictional small towns on television and these stand-ins for whole parts of the country are easily identifiable and relatable, but also, as in the case with Sharp Objects, mildly unnerving. Wind Gap, Missouri is an approximation of the mid-western towns that dot Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, and its loneliness and isolation are key to setting the tone of the show. There's...

Even though I knew about the midpoint twist in "Gone Girl" when I sat down in theaters to watch it 10 years ago — since I'd already read Gillian Flynn's book — I was still struck, at the moment, by the reveal that Amy Elliott Dunne (Rosamund Pike) carefully crafted her suspicious disappearance to screw over her husband Nick (Ben Affleck). The shot of Amy in sunglasses, her arm hastily bandaged and a burger in her free hand as she drives down the highway on the morning of July 5, turns the entire story up to that point on its head. It also makes one thing quite clear: Amy is one of the best and most terrifying villains in pop culture history, and she deserves recognition.

Gone Girl sees Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike), the inspiration for the beloved series of “Amazing Amy” children’s books, go missing. The prime suspect is her husband Nick (Ben Affleck), though he is as shocked at his wife’s disappearance as the police are.
As the days go by and more clues are unearthed, it becomes clear that Nick isn’t honest as he seems, and that the marriage he had with Amy may not have been as blissful as everyone thought.

The true crime genre is older than you might think. It dates back to England in the mid-1500s, back when "crime pamphlets" containing bloody, tawdry stories of local crime began circulating among the educated aristocracy. People have almost always been fascinated by the darker sides of humanity, but there was something extra illicit about reading stories of real crimes, and the market for these pamphlets boomed. In the 1800s, the morality of these stories came into play, and fictional crime stories with heroic detectives became more common. True crime became a sort of dirty subgenre, a "guilty pleasure" for the morally bankrupt, even as true crime books became bestsellers. Then, around 2014, it all changed seemingly overnight.
Right at the front of the seemingly meteoric rise in the genre's popularity was "Gone Girl," David Fincher's adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel of the same name, a fictional story about how...
