Gymnastics movies delve into athlete stories and Olympic history, from fun comedies to intense documentaries. Olympians like Simone Biles and Gabby Douglas inspire films that showcase their talent and triumphs. Some films use gymnastics as a plot device for genres like comedy and horror, adding unique twists to the sport.
Over the years, there have been some great gymnastics movies, both those that look at the sport of gymnastics and others that just use it as one of the film's plot devices. Some movies feature a prominent gymnast character, others focus on the sport of gymnastics itself, and several documentaries take fans behind the scenes of the Olympic sport. With gymnastics as an organized sport in the United States since 1881 and an Olympic Games sport since 1896, there is a lot of history behind the sport.
Over its history, some of the biggest Olympic heroes have come from the world of organized gymnastics.

Laurie Hernandez is proving she’s as much of a natural at commentating the Olympics as she was when competing in them.
The 24-year-old media personality has been earning scores of praise this summer for her enthusiastic, insightful and down-to-earth broadcast work as a color commentator for NBC’s coverage of women’s artistic gymnastics events at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Hernandez has plenty of experience handling Olympic pressure, having won a gold medal as a member of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team known as the “Final Five” at the 2016 Rio Olympics — alongside teammate Simone Biles — in addition to an individual silver medal for the balance beam that year.
She is also no stranger to the media spotlight, having won the Dancing With the Stars season 23 title in 2016 following the Olympics, in addition to co-hosting American Ninja Warrior Junior and voicing roles on such animated series as The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.

Simone Biles is an ultra-golden girl, winning her record sixth Olympic gold medal during the all-around competition on Thursday in Paris.
The 2024 Paris Olympics featured a historic showdown on Thursday, as Simone Biles and Suni Lee faced off for the all-around gymnastics title, marking the first time the past two Olympic champions would compete against one another. The American gymnasts have won the last five all-around titles, beginning with Carly Patterson in 2004, then Nastia Liukin in 2008 and Gabby Douglas in 2012. Biles won the 2016 all-around in Rio with Lee winning gold at the 2020 Tokyo games.
After a tough back and forth between the two Americans and Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, Biles nailed her floor routine and reclaimed the crown — becoming the first woman to win two Olympic all-around titles since Czechoslovakia’s Vera Caslavska in 1964 and 1968. Andrade won the silver medal, while Lee earned the bronze.

People who are shorter than average often face teasing about their height, such as being used as an armrest or hearing, “How’s the weather down there?” However, in certain industries, being small is advantageous. A prime example is Olympic gymnast Simone Biles.
In this striking photo, Simone Biles, at a petite 4’8″ (142.2 cm), looks like a pocket-sized powerhouse next to the towering Conor Dwyer, who stands at a lofty 6’5″ (196 cm) (Credit: Sara De Boer / Startraksphoto)
Benefits of Being a Short Gymnast
While many contact sports, such as basketball, favor taller athletes, gymnastics is a discipline where shorter stature provides a distinct advantage.
Shorter gymnasts benefit from a more favorable weight-to-power ratio, enabling them to conserve energy and more easily propel their smaller bodies through the air with precision and grace.

The best gymnasts in the nation are heading to Paris to represent America in the 2024 Summer Olympics. The gymnastics competition will feature three categories: artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and trampolining. Artistic gymnastics will take place at the Bercy Arena from July 27 to August 5. In past Olympic trial years, the selection process was far more complicated, but significant modifications were made after the 2020 Summer Olympics. This year, the artistic gymnastics team event will see a maximum of five gymnasts eligible to participate, a change from Tokyo 2020, where each team consisted of four gymnasts and two individual competitors. Women’s artistic gymnastics consists of four individual events, each requiring distinct skills and strengths: balance beam, floor exercise, vault, and uneven bars. These events demand coordination, focus, accuracy, strength, and agility. Since 2005, scoring has combined a D score (difficulty/content of the exercise) and an E score (execution) to better differentiate athletes' performances.

During the Tokyo Olympics — held in 2021 rather than 2020 because of the pandemic — Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast of all time, pulled out of the competition at the last minute. Leading up to the games, all eyes were on the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics team, and Biles’ exit caused a frenzy of vitriol across the globe, especially since there was speculation it would be her final Olympics. But if you’ve followed the gymnast’s career, it’s clear she’s always done the unexpected, and as the 2024 Paris Olympics approach, Biles welcomes viewers into her world. In Netflix’s “Simone Biles Rising,” the world champion reflects on the trajectory of her stunning career, what happened in Tokyo and why she’s chosen to return to the world stage. Helmed by director Katie Walsh, the four-part docuseries is an elegantly paced and vulnerable account that infuses the history of...

John Deere has found a unique title for the person in charge of its TikTok account. The maker of agricultural equipment has put out a search for a Chief Tractor Officer, who will manage the brand’s nascent short-form video hub.
The Chief Tractor Officer position — or “the best job ever,” as John Deere’s posting put it — will work across social channels on multiple platforms, including TikTok. Applicants are asked to include a 60-second video that shows the style they would bring to the John Deere TikTok operation.
John Deere is far from the first brand to turn social media production into an executive position. Increasingly, companies have tapped Gen Z creators to run social accounts. Some, like Jack in the Box, have even given on-screen gigs to those pseudo-social media managers.
To try out that hiring process itself, John Deere put together a star-studded call for applications, which...

Actress, singer and social media influencer Mackenzie Ziegler was revealed to be the talented Tulip on Wednesday’s finale of “The Masked Dancer.” The former “Dance Moms” star finished in third place behind Diamond Mask trophy winner Gabby Douglas as Cotton Candy and runner-up Maksim Chmerkovskiy as the Sloth. Despite nailing her final routine to “Kings & Queens” by Ava Max, Mackenzie wasn’t able to earn enough votes to take home the title.

Reality TV dancing competitions collided during Wednesday night’s finale of “The Masked Dancer,” when “Dancing With the Stars” pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy was revealed to be the Season 1 runner-up, Sloth. Season 1 of “The Masked Dancer” came to a dramatic conclusion on Wednesday night’s finale, with three-time Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas being revealed as the Diamond Mask trophy winner, Cotton Candy. Despite competing against two professionally trained dancers in the finale, Gabby came out on top by incorporating a few tricks she knew the Sloth and Tulip couldn’t match — tumbling skills. Cotton Candy rocked and rolled her way through an inspirational routine to Kesha‘s version of “This is Me” and finished things off by flying through the air in a bouquet of balloons.

Dancing and singing may be a mystery to many. But it makes for good television, and the season one finale of The Masked Dancer underlined that point tonight with a big surprise finish.
Similar in many ways to its cousin, The Masked Singer, the Masked Dancer is a dance competition with a twist — celebrity guests in colorful costumes and face masks are anonymous. They are joined by masked partners and back-up dancers as they execute moves from hip-hop to salsa and jazz to tap-dancing. Some of it is poetry in motion. Other parts, not so much.
Hosted by comic Craig Robinson, with panelists Ken Jeong, Paula Abdul, Brian Austin Green and Ashley Tisdale, The Masked Dancer sprinkles clues into the dance routines, leaving the panelists room to guess the identities. *** Spoiler Alert: Do not read further if you have not seen tonight’s show. ***

“The Masked Dancer” Season 1 came to end on Wednesday night with Gabby Douglas (Cotton Candy) winning the Diamond Mask trophy. However, there was another competition going on at the judges’ table all season long that also bears mentioning: which panelist was the best guesser? Heading into the finale, both Paula Abdul and Brian Austin Green were tied at two points apiece. Before the confetti fell on Fox’s reality TV show, Paula ended up as the judge with the most correct guesses. So how’d she do it?

Olympic gold medalist gymnast Gabby Douglas is the first-ever winner of “The Masked Dancer,” having scored the show’s diamond mask trophy after being revealed as Cotton Candy.

And then there were three. Fox’s “The Masked Dancer” wraps up its first season on Wednesday night with a battle royale between three finalists: Tulip, Sloth and Cotton Candy.
Variety has a first look at the two-hour episode, specifically the debate among panelists on whether Cotton Candy is an ice skater or a gymnast in real life. Here, Ken Jeong guesses that Cotton Candy could be Olympic figure skater medalist Michelle Kwan, while Brian Austin Green agrees with Jeong and says the skater he has in mind can do gymnast-like flips. Ashley Tisdale, however, disagrees: “You fell like someone who knows how to land,” she says, referring to a tumble the dancer took early in the season. Only five anonymous celebrities remain in The Masked Dancer‘s competition — and if our prediction is correct, this isn’t the first time Cotton Candy has been part of an elite Final Five.
After her three impressive dance routines on the Fox series thus far, we feel confident in our guess that the petite Cotton Candy is Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas, who was a member of the 2016 gymnastics team in Rio de Janeiro known as the Final Five.

The Super Six took the stage on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Masked Singer,” with three performers sent packing after competing in head to head battles for a spot in the season finale. After losing her face-off to the Mushroom, Jellyfish was revealed to be Olympic gold medalist Chloe Kim. “You were amazing tonight,” said panelist Ken Jeong after correctly guessing the professional snowboarder was behind the mask. “You are an inspiration to my daughters. You are a huge name in our household and you inspire us all.” Watch Chloe’s emotional rendition of “Stay” by Rihanna above.
Following Chloe’s performance, one of her clues revealed that she once had a “missed connection” with Ken. She enjoyed poking fun at the panelist during her unmasked interview with host Nick Cannon. “I watched a YouTube video of you answering medical questions,” she explained. “I was watching the whole time it was so funny.
