We've seen the finale of Skeleton Crew, though we hope this isn't the last we see of the characters, and the culmination of this kid-centric show was emotional and exhilarating. Before I ever saw a minute of the show, I hoped to feel watching this the way I did watching coming-of-age adventures from the 1980s, and my hope was satisfied. What I found outstanding about the series was its depiction of defeat and triumph for each of its characters. I'll explore how that's true in alphabetical order since I can't otherwise decide who should be in first place.

"Skeleton Crew" has been the biggest surprise related to "Star Wars" since "Andor" took the world by storm with its poignant political drama. In episode 4, titled "Can't Say I Remember No At Attlin" after Sm-33's (voiced by Nick Frost) surprisingly meaningful favorite saying, Neel's courage saves Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), and Kb (Kyriana Kratter) from certain death. Meanwhile, his pacifism and honesty manage to impress future Troik clan chieftain Hayna so thoroughly that his charm may inspire her to become a peaceful ruler -- thus potentially ending the cycle of violence that has plagued At Achrann for who knows how long.

Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch has teased his upcoming remake of Danny DeVito's beloved 35-year-old satirical black comedy-drama film The War of Roses, calling it "a joy to make." Announced earlier this year, Cumberbatch's The Roses is directed by Jay Roach and also stars MCU alum Olivia Colman.

Per Variety, Cumberbatch discussed The Roses and his other upcoming projects at the Red Sea Film Festival. The actor stated that the movie had "pretty cool ingredients" in his "amazing" co-star Colman and Tony McNamara's "great script." The War of the Roses reimagining will mark Cumberbatch's first role as the lead in a comedy, and he has found the experience gratifying. "We'll see if it'll get there, but it was a joy to make," he said. Venom: The Last Dance is wrapping up its time in theaters, meaning that its final box office haul is now available. According to Box Office Mojo as of Sunday, December 8, the Tom Hardy-starring film has a domestic haul of $139 million and a foreign gross of $333 million, adding up to $473 million globally. Given Venom 3's reported budget of $120 million, this makes the film a modest success. However, it comes up short when compared to the other films in the series with 2018's Venom and 2021's Venom: Let There Be Carnage grossing about $213 domestically.

Ben Affleck stars in this mind-bending sci-fi thriller from co-writer / director (and co-cinematographer / editor) Robert Rodriguez. Essentially ripping off Inception, only on a fraction of that film’s budget, it’s a fast-paced rug-puller that’s almost gleefully nonsensical. In a good way.

Affleck plays Detective Rourke, who’s introduced getting hypnosis therapy, because he isn’t over the trauma of his losing his young daughter Minnie (Ionie Nieves) after she was kidnapped from a playground when he looked away for a second. A period of time has passed and Minnie’s body has never been found, so when Rourke finds a photo of her while investigating a mysterious bank robbery case, he becomes convinced that the culprit, Dellrayne (William Fichtner), knows her whereabouts.

Universal’s “Fast X” debuted atop the U.K. and Ireland box office with £5.8 million ($7.3 million), according to numbers released by Comscore.

In second place, Disney’s “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” continued its strong run in the territory, adding £2.8 million in its third weekend for a total of £28.9 million. In its seventh weekend, Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” earned £544,283 in third position for a total of £51.8 million.

James Gunn’s band of galactic rascals are proving their worth at the box office as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 enjoyed the best second-weekend hold of any sequel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the second-best among any MCU title, according to final weekend numbers.

From Marvel Studios and Disney, the threequel grossed an estimated $62.6 million from 4,450 theaters in its sophomore outing, a mere 47 percent decline and more than enough to crush the competition (that’s up from Sunday’s estimate of $60.5 million, a 49 percent decline). In more good news, the pic crossed the $200 million mark domestically to finish Sunday with a cume of $215.6 million.

Overseas, Guardians 3 took in another $91.9 million from 52 markets for a foreign tally of $315.6 million — including a pleasing $58.4 million from China — and $530.9 million globally.

The Cannes Film Festival on Monday announced a raft of new additions to the Official Selection of its 76th edition running May 16-27.

Two new films have been added to the Competition lineup: Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s Black Flies and Catherine Corsini’s Le Retour.

Hypnotic is the upcoming science fiction action thriller from Robert Rodriguez and much has been announced about the cast, story, release date, trailer, and more. Hypnotic follows a detective played by Ben Affleck who goes on a mission to find his missing daughter and solve a string of major thefts. The movie stars a cast of talented actors and the production side is a family affair with Rodriguez's children working on key parts of the music, story, and more. Hypnotic is shaping up to be an inventive, and action-packed spy movie and one of the few original upcoming sci-fi movies not based on IP.

Rodriguez directs his 20th feature film with Hypnotic and his first since the 2020 We Can Be Heroes that premiered on Netflix. Unlike that movie and Rodriguez’s more child-friendly films, Hypnotic is an R-rated thriller, putting it in the same company as Sin City and his debut film El Mariachi.

Exclusive: Fresh off a surprise “work in progress” screening at SXSW, Robert Rodriguez’s action-thriller Hypnotic, starring Ben Affleck, has been set for a May 12 U.S. release.

As we revealed last month, Ketchup Entertainment will be launching the movie on more than 2,000 screens.

The looming release for a movie that remains unfinished is yet another talking point in the project’s tumultuous journey to screen.

Little has been straight-forward for Hypnotic but the warm reception it received on Sunday night was a welcome respite for its creatives and financiers. It’s unusual for a big budget film to get a public “work in progress” screening at a festival but Austin was a smart choice given the home crowd’s reverence for Texas-native Rodriguez.

The director said today: “I’ve been working on this film for many years now, and to see the reaction from my home town audience at SXSW was humbling and validating.
