British crime dramas, comedies, mysteries and procedurals are becoming more and more popular. And platforms like Britbox make these series more accessible to people from all around the world. Britbox has some of the best and most popular British TV shows, from Sherlock to Line of Duty. There are also some underrated cult classics available on Britbox, like The It Crowd, which almost had an American remake.
British TV series are popular because of their character-driven narrative and limited episodes, which gives the storylines enough time to develop without including too many filler episodes. Many British TV series are also based on books by popular authors like Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Peter James. And while there are many great TV series on Britbox, the best shows will captivate audiences from start to finish.

Chris Carson (Martin Freeman) is trying to be better—on and off the job—in The Responder Season 2. But as we see in the first two episodes already streaming on BritBox (two more drop on July 18 and 25), that’s not so easy. He wants a day job to get off the night shift and therefore be able to spend more time with his daughter, but it’s not in the cards. He may have a way to get that, but it means doing something shady for Debs (Amaka Okafor), which only results in him and Rachel (Adelayo Adedayo) becoming entangled in quite the mess and owing the wrong person money; they have to pick up drugs for Jodie (Faye McKeever) for money. So things can only go up for Chris from here … right? TV Insider spoke with Freeman and writer Tony Schumacher ...

The Responder is one of those rare cop dramas that cut to the quick, leaving you in a state of reflective, not entirely unpleasant, unease. It's entirely worth your time. No, it's not a novel concept -- a first responder on the emergency line drags himself from crisis to crisis (of varying scale), nor is it a radical reinvention of the tried and true. It's just a solid slab of TV entertainment that knows its material inside and out.
The hard-pressed police officer pushed to the brink of what could reasonably be expected of anyone -- let alone the average citizen who rarely, if ever, gets into adrenalized circumstances on a similar par -- is a character type that we've grown to love as a movie and TV-viewing audience. From the hapless careerists who come against the strictures of organized enforcement agencies to the trigger-happy officers who drag themselves and colleagues into terrible scenarios,...

Martin Freeman‘s brilliant career encompasses comedy (the original U.K. The Office), drama, and epic fantasy (The Hobbit trilogy). But few roles in his impressive catalogue have been as unsparingly realistic and raw as that of The Responder‘s Chris Carson, the conflicted and emotionally exhausted police officer working the soul-crushing night shift in gritty Liverpool. He won an International Emmy for The Responder‘s first season, and Season 2 (with two episodes premiering weekly) plunges Carson even deeper into perilous rabbit holes of deception and frustration. Chris, demoted from his former rank of Inspector, has one goal this season: to land a day job on the force that would keep him closer to his estranged wife (MyAnna Buring), who threatens to move to London with their adorable daughter (Romi Hyland-Rylands), whose first communion is approaching. But his complicated dealings with shady cops and local ...

‘If you didn’t laugh, you’d cry’ isn’t just the correct British response to any exasperating situation, it must also be Tony Schumacher’s screenwriting mantra. His crime drama The Responder would be unwatchably bleak if it wasn’t also so bloody funny.
Series one put response officer Chris Carson (Martin Freeman) through the wringer so thoroughly that it was a wonder he survived. His childhood pal Carl, a small-time drug dealer who’d been paying him for police intel, didn’t, and in a characteristically heroic/risky attempt to help Carl’s widow, Chris gave her the rucksack of stolen cocaine that had kicked off all this mess. Now it’s six months later and guess what? Chris’ problems are far from over.

At the start of The Responder’s first series, written by ex-police officer Tony Schumacher, the cracks were already showing in Martin Freeman’s police officer Chris Carson. He was depressed, angry, and having panic attacks.
A former inspector who’d been demoted to response policing when his squad came under suspicion of corruption, Chris had spent the last three years working night patrols in Liverpool city centre. He was unpopular at work and considered a loose cannon best left alone. His shift pattern meant that he barely saw his wife Kate (MyAnna Buring) and their young daughter Tilly. His wages couldn’t cover the fees at the care home for his dementia-suffering mother (Rita Tushingham). He wanted to be a good bobby, but under-funded public services made him at best, a sticking plaster on the desperate needs of his drug-flooded and impoverished community.

Intended as an issue drama that also addresses intergenerational tensions, this film doesn’t manage to dig far beneath the surface
Grappling with the growing pains of an Asian-Canadian teenager, Jason Karman’s well-intentioned debut aims to tackle a multitude of big themes – but it also makes a mistake that plagues other issue-driven films where the characters take the backseat to the talking points. Split between a queer coming-of-age narrative and a portrait of intergenerational differences, Golden Delicious ends up treating both subjects with insufficient depth.
A capable performer who looks well into his late 20s, Cardi Wong plays 17-year-old protagonist Jake, a born people-pleaser who does his best to make his unyielding father George (Ryan Mah) and his bubbly girlfriend Valerie (Parmiss Sehat) happy. Such efforts are usually to Jake’s own detriment. To continue George’s broken dreams of athletic prowess, Jake dutifully practises basketball every day, even...

We’re bereft. Happy Valley has ended for good. No more Catherine and Clare having mugs of tea on the back step, no more Sgt Cawood dressed like RoboCop, no more Ryan, no more Tommy Lee Royce. It went out with a bang, but still we’re bereft. What could possibly fill that gap?

“I try and make the job work.” So says the title character of BritBox’s new six-part police drama The Responder, which stars Sherlock Emmy winner Martin Freeman as worn-out patrol officer Chris Carson. Working nights and responding to emergency situations that range from neighbor disputes to acts of violence, Chris is struggling mentally with the stress of the job and its effect on his family, including wife Kate (MyAnna Buring). In our video interview, Freeman tells TV Insider he was drawn to the role on the strength of the writing by former police officer Tony Schumacher. “He wasn’t trying to please me as a reader,” Freeman says. “He was writing what he wanted to write, and I always respond very favorably to that ’cause he wasn’t trying to grab my attention and impress me with loads of stuff going on. He got you to the inner life of this person very quickly.

It’s doubtful the Police Operational Handbook has a chapter on calling clients nonces and threatening to chuck Yorkshire terriers off a balcony, but that’s how PC Chris Carson gets the job done. He’s been around long enough to know that the protocol is unworkable. A city like Liverpool on a night shift is a Wild West – try to police it to the letter of the law and he’d go mad.
Chris, played by Martin Freeman, is going mad. He knows that’s not the right language to use, not on a shift, or in one of the scant counselling sessions he’s been given to fix what his wife calls the “lifetime of shit in his head”, but mad is what he means. Chris is losing it – his temper, his grip, his dying mother, his marriage – and, depending on how a plot involving a homeless heroin...
