As Stitch cackles in the machine and enters the Earth’s atmosphere, Maia Kealoha’s Lilo spots his space ship from her home, thinking it’s a shooting star.

Lilo & Stitch director Chris Sanders couldn't be happier that the 2002 animated movie has continued to resonate with Disney fans more than 20 years later. While promoting his new animated feature The Wild Robot, Sanders who is also the voice actor for Stitch opened up about the staying power of the franchise's beloved titular characters.

During an interview with Collider, Sanders touched on the franchise's legacy and returning as the voice of Stitch in the upcoming live-action remake. "I like that the story and the characters have endured. It was my wish that the story and characters would have staying power, and I'm really glad that they have," he said. "I've never stopped doing the voice. I do it for all the different stage shows and parades and everything, and it's nice to, several times a year, be able to revisit that character."

The long-anticipated adaptation of the animated movie Lilo & Stitch into a live-action film by Disney is finally confirmed for the summer of 2025. The announcement was made at the D23 Expo, where Disney revealed the first appearance of the mischievous alien Stitch, which burst through the screen to reveal the window of release on a CGI display. Though the studio hasn't announced a release date yet, Disney has two summer release slots, May 23 and August 8.

For a long time now, fans of the original, which was released in 2002 as an animated movie, have been speculating about a live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch. The film was originally in development for Disney+, but with the studio having confidence in the project's wide reach, the release has now shifted to being theatrical. Changing the release format of the film from streaming to theaters proves the studio's high expectations for it at the box office this summer.

We’ve known that a live action take on Disney’s Lilo & Stitch was on the way for a long time now. After all, the project went into active development all the way back in 2020 but as you well know, the world has been in an interesting place over the last few years, not least in the global film industry.

Post-production commenced on the project back in February but it was assumed that everything was running behind on the picture, given that a fire on set in 2022 stalled production by several months before last year’s Hollywood strikes further slowed things down.

On TikTok, @paulinapullara shared a post that included various photos and footage from the Hawaii set of the Lilo & Stitch remake. The cast and crew of the film can be seen working on a scene involving a miniature pink convertible, and a young girl who appears to be Lilo can be seen with the car in a couple of the images. There are other photos with Stitch behind the wheel in the vehicle, and though they are not close-up shots, they showcase just how much the live-action version of the alien looks like his animated counterpart. Disney is currently shooting its latest live-action adaptation, Lilo & Stitch, down in Ohau, Hawaii. While the cast includes names like Zach Galifianakis, newcomer Maia Kealoha, and Courtney B. Vance, a number of the animated original’s voice actors are also on the island filming smaller roles.
