Samsung CEO and Vice Chairman Kwon Oh-hyun said on Friday he’ll resign from his post in early 2018, adding another twist in the fallout from the imprisonment of Lee Jae-yong, the de-facto leader of the electronics giant. The Wildflower Film Awards Korea is an award ceremony that recognize the achievement of Korean independent and low-budget films. Their primary aim is to create more publicity in Korea and abroad for filmmakers working outside of the mainstream commercial film industry. The 3rd edition ceremony will take place on April 7th, 2016. This year tree films lead the nominations with five nominations each, A Matter of Interpretation by Lee Kwang-kuk (Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress and two Best Supporting Actor/Actress), A Midsummer’s Fantasia by Jang Kun-jae (Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Actress and Best Actor), In Her Place by Albert Shin with (Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Actress, Best New Actor/Actress, and Best Supporting Actor/Actress) and in second place we have Right Now, Wrong Then by Hong Sangsoo with four nominations (Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress and Best Actor).

Johnnie To-produced Trivisa and Yang Qing’s Chongqing Hotpot will open this year’s Hong Kong International Film Festival (March 21-April 4), while Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Creepy will close the event.

Chongqing Hotpot, which receives its world premiere at Hkiff, follows three high school classmates who open a hotpot restaurant and their adventures when the business fails.

Trivisa, which recently premiered at the Berlin film festival, is a gangster tale co-directed by Johnnie To proteges Frank Hui, Vicky Wong and Jevons Au. Kurosawa’s thriller Creepy, starring Hidetoshi Nishijima as a dectective investigating his neighbour, also premiered in Berlin.

In total, the festival will screen 240 titles including 63 world, international and Asian premieres. Highlights include a retrospective of Wong Kar Wai’s Jet Tone Films, celebrating the company’s 25th anniversary, and a spotlight on Korean cinema which will screen Kwon Oh-kwang’s Collective Invention, E J-yong’s The Bacchus Lady, Im Kwon-taek...

Numerous films are released each year with unique concepts, and among the 2015 entries is poised to be a South Korean feature that looks at the effects a man suffers when he becomes a human-fish hybrid.

The film is called Collective Invention, and marks the feature debut of South Korean filmmaker Kwon Oh-kwang, who takes on both directorial and scriptwriting duties. Lee Kwang-soo takes on the lead role, with a supporting cast that includes Lee Chun-hee and Park Bo-young.

The film’s synopsis is as follows:

A hapless mutant fish-man becomes a national celebrity, in this hilarious satire from South Korean director Kwon Oh-kwang.

The trailer only briefly touches on the cause of what made the lead character turn into a fish-man hybrid, focusing instead on the effects, both positive and negative, that it has on him and the people around him, as well as society at large.

The Toronto International Film Festival’s prominence on the festival circuit has only grown over the years, with films from numerous different fields having gone on to critical and commercial acclaim. Among the festival’s different categories are Tiff Docs and Vanguard. Tiff Docs allows documentaries to get their own spotlight at the festival, giving acclaimed documentarians such as Michael Moore and Frederick Wiseman a platform for their films. The Vanguard section, on the other hand, showcases films that aren’t easily categorisable into a specific genre. With the Canadian Films lineup announcement having revealed the first set of films playing in each group, Tiff today revealed more of the lineup in each section.
