Mikey Madison is getting a lot of Oscar buzz for her powerful lead performance in Anora, but she got her first big break playing Max in Pamela Adlons underappreciated dramedy series Better Things. Madison is one of Hollywoods most promising rising stars right now; Anora is the latest of many high-profile roles shes played in recent years. In 2019, she played notorious Manson Family member Susan Atkins in Quentin Tarantinos 60s-set epic Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2022, she played a new incarnation of Ghostface, Amber Freeman, in Scream.
Anora has made Madison a bigger star than ever. Sean Bakers darkly comedic tale of an exotic dancer who impulsively marries a Russian oligarchs immature son is tipped to be a major contender come awards season. Its expected to land a Best Picture nomination, a Best Director nomination for Baker, and a Best Actress nomination for Madison. Madison gives one...

Charlie Wright, nephew of actress Robin Wright, had a memorable leading role in Diary of a Wimpy Kid, facing backlash for recasting. Wright's early TV appearances in The Millers and Better Things showcase his commitment to making an impact on screen, no matter the role. Despite facing online hate for his role in Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Wright found inspiration and passion for acting in projects like Yellowjackets.
Charlie Wright may have only had a few performances in his career, but they've all been in notable movies and TV shows, including one memorable leading part. As the nephew of Robin Wright, the Golden Globe-winning actress and star of Forrest Gump, Princess Bride, and many other classics, it could be that Charlie was inspired to enter the industry by his aunt. Creating a great TV finale is truly a work of art. Somehow a single episode is expected to provide closure to a story that fans have been dedicatedly following for years. It has to be satisfying but not too perfect, conclusive but not too cutesy, sad but not in a way that’s too self-serious. And while juggling all those contradictory extremes, it also has to stay true to the distinct tone of its universe.
With “Succession” and “Barry’s” finales on the horizon, it’s worthwhile to look back through the greats. From CBS stables to critically-acclaimed anime, here are some of TV’s best series finales that went above and beyond.
Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy McGill in “Better Call Saul.” (AMC)
“Better Call Saul” (AMC)
Heading into “Better Call Saul’s” sixth season, no one thought that Gilligan and Peter Gould could top “Felina.” But, by god, they did it.

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Series: "Better Things"
Where You Can Stream It: Hulu
The Pitch: Sam Fox is an actress living in LA with her three kids -- sweet youngest daughter Duke (Olivia Edward), social justice-minded middle child Frankie (Hannah Riley), and adventurous, tempestuous eldest, Max ("Scream" star Mikey Madison). Sam's beautiful house, the setting for much of the series' chaos and joy, also sits across from her forgetful and particular mother's (Celia Imrie) place.
This setup may make "Better Things" sound like a sitcom, but it's actually a series with a beautiful, serendipitous, nearly free-association structure. The show was initially co-created by Louis C.K. (whose network deal was terminated in 2017 in light of his admitted sexual misconduct), but it's clearly Adlon's baby through and through.

“For me, I was aching to see these people in the village and these characters, get one last tip of the hat,” Better Things co-creator and star Pamela Adlon said of the FX series’ finale tonight. “That for me was everything.”
Full of freed fish, childhood homes past and present, unlocked bathrooms, a lack of tampons, a re-wedding, a power outage, some Monty Python, and a sun-drenched village of Sam Fox’s extended family, the Adlon-penned and -directed “We Are Not Alone” had all the energy of a show starting, not one ending. That, in many ways, might be the greatest superpower of multiple Emmy nominee Adlon and the secret to the Peabody-winning Better Things success over the years.

Before the L.A.-set comedy comes to a fittingly warm, friend-filled end April 25, the Fox clan led by single mom Sam takes a life-changing trip to England. The itinerary starts in Liverpool, where more family history is revealed. Then it’s on to London for another memorable bar scene between Sam and her mother, Phil (Celia Imrie); a hauntingly beautiful moment for youngest daughter Duke (Olivia Edward); and the seeds of multiple new beginnings. “I get chills,” says Adlon, thinking of the episode. “We call the show ‘the portal’ because it just wants what it wants. All of this magic came together in England.” Better Things, Mondays, 10/9c, FX...

Pamela Adlon’s touching series “Better Things” has never been a show that insists upon itself. It’s not flashy. There are no “very special episodes.” And yet Adlon, who has directed all but eight of the show’s 52 episodes and written more than half of them, has done what a great many of her contemporaries can’t. She has crafted a simple, slice-of-life comedy about the joys and sorrows of everyday life and turned it into one of the best shows on TV.

In fact, without spoiling what’s to come in the final 10 episodes, Adlon reveals to TV Insider that she knew exactly what she wanted going into crafting the fifth season, which premieres on Monday on FX (next day on Hulu). “It was tough because I knew I wanted to give Max (Mikey Madison), Frankie (Hannah Riley), Duke (Olivia Edward), Phil (Celia Imrie), and then finally Sam enough consideration and let them all have a win, kind of, in a way,” Adlon says. “It was challenging trying to figure out and to be able to feel this satisfaction that everybody has moved forward in a way, including the village. Midway through the final season of “Better Things,” Sam Fox (Pamela Adlon) takes a break from a directing gig for a quick chat with the producer. Their day hasn’t been easy. The child actor won’t (or can’t) stop shouting his lines. His mom isn’t helping, demanding her son be called by his character’s name and insisting he has a “hard out” well ahead of wrap. The sitcom’s star, played by Ron Cephas Jones, is friends with Sam and has been cordial to her… until he snaps when she tries to do her job and, you know, direct him.
Throughout it all, the producer, Eli (Lena Waithe), has been silent yet sympathetic. She sees what’s going on, offering a knowing glance or supportive nod while Sam deals with problems that existed long before she took over the director’s chair. As it turns out,...

For most of her acting career, Pamela Adlon was best known for her voice, even though she rarely felt like she had one of her own.
Adlon, née Segall, entered the family business as a teenager — her father Don Segall was a sitcom writer — mostly shuffling around in small TV roles in the Eighties before finding a niche in the Nineties as a voice actor, most famously as middle schooler Bobby Hill on King of the Hill. She worked a lot but rarely felt secure in her career prospects or her level of artistry.

The fifth and final season of FX‘s Better Things is set to premiere on February 28 at 10 p.m., and creator Pamela Adlon already is toying with the idea of rebooting it a la Sex and the City‘s And Just Like That…
“I really love this. It’s an incredible thing that we had these five seasons,” Adlon told Deadline during the show’s TCA panel on Thursday. “We have 52 episodes of these stories of this family, and I don’t think there’s any doubt that we could go on and on. The stories would keep changing. The run hasn’t run because there are all of these lives, and they all still have more stories to tell.”

She continued, “So, it would be nice if we did. … I don’t know. Our costumer would joke that we should do a reboot.

Here’s wishing you the bluest sky, Better Things. FX said today that the fifth and final season of its comedy written, directed and produced by and star Pamela Adlon will premiere at 10 p.m. Monday, February 28. It also will stream on Hulu.
The FX Productions show’s ending run focuses on “the road ahead” for Sam Fox (Adlon), so devoted to her life as a working actor and single mother as she navigates three coming-of-age daughters, the challenges of her chosen career and her mother’s increasing signs of aging — as well as her own. As each of the Fox women head into the next phase of their life, they are inspired to re-evaluate themselves, learn from the past and find their own direction.
Mikey Madison, Hannah Riley and Olivia Edward stars as Sam’s daughters, and Celia Imrie plays her mother.

It’s the cardigan that’s the giveaway. For the duration of “The Outside Story,” Brooklyn filmmaker Charles (Brian Tyree Henry) wears the kind of roomy, shapeless, porridge-colored knitwear item that is established movie code for a hero in dire need of a full life reset. Thirtysomething and recently separated from his more glamorous girlfriend, Charles has settled into a schlubby, hermetic tailspin, poring obsessively over editing work and leaving his apartment only to collect takeout delivery. Casimir Koznowski’s lightweight character comedy is set in a pre-pandemic New York, when such behavior wasn’t universally familiar, and we weren’t all clinging to some food-stained version of that same cardigan: Everyone’s advice to Charles is go outside, not to stay in, which gives this modest enterprise an unintended wistful kick.
Or perhaps that’s simply the power of Henry. An actor who can magic personality and purpose from...

Charles doesn’t see much reason to leave his sunny second-floor Brooklyn apartment. Everything can be delivered, he can do his video editing at the desk that’s right next to his kitchen, and after his recent break-up, he’s got little interest in human interaction. What could possibly entice him to leave? In “The Outside Story,” Casimir Nozkowski’s ambling, rambling feature directorial debut, the answer is “bad luck” and “narrative necessity.”
In his first lead role, Brian Tyree Henry brings nuance to Charles, the introverted homebody at the center of Nozkowski’s . Meant to debut at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, one of the first major film events to be cancelled last year, Charles’ quest to get out of the house now takes on an unexpected tone. Still, the film is predictable in its revelations: Maybe it’s a good idea to broaden your horizons, even if that just...

"Do you know this man?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for an indie dramedy titled The Outside Story, the first feature film from Casimir Nozkowski, which premiered at numerous virtual film festivals last year. An introverted editor living a vertical life in his second-floor apartment, nursing a broken heart after a rough breakup, is always on deadline and in a rut. When Charles locks himself out of his building, he must go horizontal and confront the world he's been avoiding in search of a way back inside. In order to find his way back inside, he's forced to interact with...his neighbors. Oh nooo! The very talented Brian Tyree Henry stars as Charles, with a fun cast including Sonequa Martin-Green, Sunita Mani, Michael Cyril Creighton, and Olivia Edward. This looks charming & amusing, more of a comedy than expected, but as an introvert I'm curious to see what...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Better Things” Season 4, Episode 10, “Listen to the Roosters.”]
Ghosts are walking among us, and they’re feeling very, very good.
One ghost in particular gets a temporary spotlight in the “Better Things” Season 4 finale (now available on Hulu), as a gray-haired woman in a yellow dress (played by Ellen Geer) shares a bit of foresight with Duke (Olivia Edward), the Fox family medium. Duke regularly connects with spirits, whether it’s the recurring presence of her grandfather in Season 3 or during the otherworldly Season 2 episode, “White Rock,” so it’s not all that surprising when her new friend up and vanishes via an apparitional Irish goodbye.
But before she leaves, this ghost offers a key bit of advice. Claiming she can see the future, Duke (in a moment of prescience) first asks if there is a future (there is), before saying, “I never want to get married or have kids...

Sam Fox is the ideal television star. Played with sagacious pluck by Pamela Adlon and inspired by her life, work, and family, the eccentric “Better Things” lead is curiously hard to read. Take an early Season 4 episode, when Sam discovers an owl nesting under her bedcovers. Will she freak out? Will she shoo it away? Will she take care of it, like she takes care of so many others? Will she make it a family affair, inviting her three daughters into the conversation before naming the owl Edwin and wrapping it in a blanket?
You may think you know what Sam is going to do next, but rarely are those assumptions rewarded. “Better Things” purposefully chooses its events, eliminating the obvious developments to dwell on defining moments. Sam’s unpredictability is enticing on its own, as are her equally unexpected adventures, but the perpetual resourcefulness with which she lives her life,...

Frankie interjects, “If I ever get the impulse to just strike up conversation with complete strangers everywhere I go, I will 100 percent hold it against you, Sam.”

Pamela Adlon was in her happy place on Wednesday night, surrounded by friends, family members and fans as FX toasted the fourth season premiere of her critically adored comedy “Better Things.”
Adlon joked as she surveyed the audience in the Whitby Hotel screening room in Manhattan that the crowd was full of “Easter eggs” for her autobiographical show, starting with her real-life brother, Greg Segall, who is portrayed by Kevin Pollak in the series.
Adlon noted that she considers New York her “home town” and she pointed out a slew of old friends in the crowd, some of whom have influenced characters, character names and storylines on “Better Things,” which bowed Wednesday on FX. Adlon stars as an actor and single mother of a certain age who is struggling to stay afloat in Hollywood while raising three daughters.
“It has been an incredible time and journey for me,” Adlon said of producing the show.

One of the most underrated series in the FX lineup over the past several years is “Better Things.” Written, directed, produced by Pamela Adlon, the series has consistently been great and has sadly been overshadowed by some of the more headline-grabbing series that the network has released.

The story of “Better Things” follows a woman clearly going through her mid-life crisis, played perfectly by Adlon, who is raising her three daughters, Max (Mikey Madison), Frankie (Hannah Alligood) and Duke (Olivia Edward), while also trying to find a life of her own that doesn’t revolve around family obligations and drama.

As the father of two boys, I must say that no television show on the air right now better encapsulates the joys and sorrows of parenthood than Pamela Adlon’s FX series “Better Things.” It may be the best comedy since “Roseanne” to show warts-and-all parenting: a turbulent, messy, battle royale that brings out the best and worst in both parent and child. And in the show’s acclaimed third season, those ups and downs were displayed in their most hilarious and painful glory.
The series revolves around Sam (Adlon), a working actress and single mom to three girls: Max (Mikey Madison), Frankie (Hannah Alligood) and Duke (Olivia Edward). As is the case in most families, each child is a unique entity brimming with quirks, strengths and flaws. And each in her own way tests Sam’s parental endurance.
