In the 2010s, a coalition of farmers and eco-activists declared Notre-Dame-des-Landes, a commune in western France, a Zone to Defend (Z.A.D.) and occupied the region to block the construction of an airport. Over the next decade, they resisted multiple attempts by the state to evict them, attracting supporters in the tens of thousands, until Emmanuel Macron yielded to their demands in 2018. Guillaume Cailleau and Ben Russell’s Direct Action aims to now answer the question of what happens to a movement after it triumphs, by documenting the self-sustaining community that sprang up after the occupation became permanent.
To this end, the film draws on the slow cinema of Andrei Tarkovsky, Béla Tarr, and, above all, Chantal Akerman with an assemblage of long takes—some shorter, some longer, all several minutes in length—that depict the work processes, leisure activities, and ongoing mobilization efforts of the Z.A.D.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has been found guilty of embezzlement of public funds and has been deemed ineligible to run for public office, a ruling that could derail her 2027 campaign to succeed Emmanuel Macron as French President.
The ruling, announced in Paris on Monday, found that from 2004 to 2017, Le Pen, eight members of the European Parliament and 12 assistants from her Rassemblement National (Rn) party, then called the Front National (Fn), illegally siphoned off European Union funding to bankroll Rn activities within France. The court estimated the damages at just over $3 million (2.9 million euro). The case concerned EU funds allotted to Le Pen and her party when she was a member of the European Parliament. The fraud came mainly in the form of no-shows: Staff hired with money from Brussels were, in reality, working for her party inside France. Le Pen had denied any wrongdoing.

Vice President Jd Vance has received criticism on social media after saying that the United Kingdom was a “random country” that had not fought a war in three or four decades. The UK and France are both drawing up a plan with Ukraine to present to the US, which would include a peacekeeping force made up of a currently unspecified “coalition of the willing.”
During a London summit of European leaders on March 2, the country’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer, a key player in pushing the plan, and French President Emmanuel Macron asserted that “a number of countries have indicated [on Sunday] that they want to be part of the plan that [they] are developing.”
“The UK has prepared to back this with boots on the ground and planes in the air together with others,” Starmer added. “Europe must do the heavy lifting, but to support peace in our continent and to succeed,...

French President Emmanuel Macron’s TV address on the challenges facing France and Europe in the “new era” of U.S. President Donald Trump drew 15.1 million viewers, according to local audience monitor Médiamétrie.
The 14-minute live address at 8pm local time on Wednesday was broadcast on TF1, France 2, M6, Tmc, Lcp as well as four news channels.
Médiamétrie said the speech took a 71.6% share of all the viewers watching TV at that time.
The address followed in the wake of the Trump administration’s decision to halt the delivery of military supplies to Ukraine, as well as its threats to impose trade tariffs on goods produced in Europe.
Macron told the French population that a 30-year era of “innocence” in the wake of the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall was over, and that France and Europe needed to take their security into their own hands and embark on an ambitious plan of rearmament.

French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation Wednesday laying out the challenges facing France and Europe in the wake of the United States’ changing position on Ukraine under President Donald Trump.
“I’m addressing you this evening because of the international situation and its consequences for Europe,” said Macron in the televised address, which was widely billed as a wake-up call by local political commentators. “The war in Ukraine, which has resulted in nearly a million deaths and injuries, continues with the same intensity. Our allies, the United States, are supporting Ukraine less and are leaving doubts about what will happen next.”
He was speaking less than 24 hours after Trump’s administration suspended delivery of all U.S. military aid to Ukraine as it attempts to strong-arm the war-weary nation into ceding territory in return for a peace deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Following Donald Trump’s press conference this week with French president Emmanuel Macron, “The Daily Show” host Desi Lydic is pretty sure she’s found Trump’s true kryptonite: foreign accents.
To kick off the press conference, Trump immediately noted that French is “the most beautiful language,” while forcefully placing his hand on Macron’s knee and admitting he really had no idea what Macron was saying.
“Yeah, Trump just loves a French accent, probably because it’s the native tongue of his hero, Pepé Le Pew,” Lydic joked. “Something about that pervert skunk that Trump finds so relatable.”
As the press conference went on, Trump tried to falsely claim that Europe was loaning money to Ukraine instead of just providing funding outright, which Macron quickly corrected Trump about in front of everyone.
That stunned Lydic the most, especially considering Trump didn’t suddenly get angry and push back, as...

If you’re looking for a globe that colors in the United States with the American flag and also refers to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” good news: it exists! And it comes with a bonus great lake. So, on Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert roasted the product thoroughly.
The late night host brought it up during his monologue after first skewering President Trump’s recent meeting with French president Emmanuel Macron, during which Macron had to fact check Trump in real time about funding France gave to Ukraine.
“That meeting you saw there clearly shows how warped Trump’s view of global affairs is, and now you can celebrate that view with a brand new product,” Colbert explained. “Because a company is now offering a special globe that features labels for the USA, the ‘Gulf of America,’ ‘Mount McKinley’ and nothing else.”

Brazil will be the country of honor at the Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film, running from May 13 to 21.
The spotlight comes amid Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s drive to make the audiovisual sector a key pole of his country’s economic strategy.
The news of the focus also comes at time when Brazilian cinema is enjoying international attention thanks to a buzzy awards season run for director Walter Salles’ political drama I’m Still Here, which is nominated for three Academy Awards.
Brazil’s participation at the Marché du Film also aligns with the France-Brazil Season, agreed last summer by French President Emmanuel Macron and Lula to celebrate the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The multidisciplinary initiative running across 2025 aims to strengthen bilateral ties and generate joint responses to contemporary political, social and ecological challenges.

The View‘s lineup was finally full on Tuesday’s (February 25) episode after absences from both Whoopi Goldberg and Alyssa Farah Griffin due to illness. And they all had a lot to say about Donald Trump‘s latest headline-making meeting — this time, with French President Emmanuel Macron. First, the group reviewed footage of the Oval Office sit-down, in which Macron corrected Trump about the contributions European countries are making to help Ukraine’s defense, but also used complimentary language and body language around Trump. Then, Joy Behar made it a proper roast right away. “The amount of flattery that this man needs is a psychological issue. I mean, Roman emperors didn’t need this much ring-kissing. Everyone has to love him. The neediness. The man is almost 80 years old, and he’s got the neediness of a toddler,” Behar, who is 82 herself, said in response to Trump, 78. She went on...

‘The View’: Joy Behar Says Trump’s Desperate Need for Praise ‘Is a Psychological Issue’ | Video
President Donald Trump’s craving for flattery and loyalty seems to be bordering on “a psychological issue” at this point, at least according to “The View” host Joy Behar. On Tuesday morning’s episode of the talk show, the ABC host could only scoff at his interaction with French president Emmanuel Macron.

Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder of France’s far-right National Rally party, and father to French political leader Marine Le Pen, has died. He was 96.
Le Pen founded National Rally, then called National Front, in 1972 as a right-wing populist movement and led the party until 2011. He stood for president five times, most successfully in 2002 when he shocked France by defeating Socialist candidate Lionel Jospin in the first round of voting, Jacques Chirac in the second round, the first time a far-right candidate had gotten that far. The conversation, recorded in May 2024, takes a candid look at the 88-year-old Pope’s views on some of the most pressing issues of our time, including the wars in Israel and Gaza, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and global migration crises. Pope Francis also opens up about the Catholic Church’s handling of sexual abuse scandals, his commitment to inclusivity, and the backlash he faces from certain factions within U.S. Catholicism. This wide-ranging interview offers unique insight into one of the most unconventional and influential leaders of the modern Church.

French pay TV giant Canal+, which is behind “Paddington” producer Studiocanal, has officially split from parent company Vivendi in time for its 40-year anniversary. Making its debut solo on the London stock exchange on Monday, Canal+ enlisted a homegrown executive, Amandine Ferré — who has been at the company for 15 years and was most recently based in China — to “cut the cord” and engineer the IPO.
Canal+ shares opened this morning at 290p and dropped by about 20% after noon local time, giving the banner an estimated valuation of £2.4 billion. Ferré, who is chief financial officer and a member of Canal+’s management board, tells Variety that the fluctuations were anticipated. “We know that in the first few weeks, our share price is going to be a little volatile,” she says. But the exec is forecasting Canal+’s “shares price volatility will calm down in January.”

Exclusive: A groundbreaking international format that has seen figures from Emmanuel Macron to Antonio Banderas face inquisitive questions from a remarkable group of journalists has been taken to series in the UK, but not by the BBC.
In a rare move, The Assembly, which aired as a one-off on the BBC last year featuring Michael Sheen and a wealth of viral moments, has been snapped up by ITV for a four-part series version.
That series will see a different celebrity each episode forced to cast aside everything they were ever taught by their media trainers as they face their most honest, funny, chaotic – and heartwarming – interview yet from a group of interviewers who are autistic, neurodivergent and/or learning disabled. President-elect Donald Trump has been on a trip to Europe to meet other world leaders, and The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart couldn’t help but notice a long-time Trump quirk. On Monday’s (December 9) edition of the Comedy Central late-night show, Stewart commented on Trump “continuing the long American tradition of not waiting for the inauguration to become president [and] head overseas and meet with allies.” However, there was one part of these meetings that Stewart paid particular attention to. The comedian said that Trump’s European trip “reminded everyone how f****** weird he is about shaking hands.” This was accompanied by clips of Trump awkwardly shaking hands with French President Emmanuel Macron and Prince William. “Top down, up down, bottom, side to side, grab it, hit me on the flippidy,” Stewart joked of the former Apprentice host’s handshaking technique. After showing a clip of Trump leaning back in...

Prince William recently traveled to Paris to attend the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral and represented his father, King Charles, at the event.
This year, Prince William has stepped in for his father while simultaneously carrying out his royal duties and caring for his ailing wife, Kate Middleton.
Kate Middleton made news during the year after a planned abdominal surgery that necessitated months of preventative cancer treatments and healing.
Prince William was also present to represent the monarchy during the 80th anniversary of D-Day earlier in the year, although King Charles couldn’t attend because of doctor’s orders.
This time, Prince William represents his father at the opening of Notre Dame Cathedral after the horrific fire in April 2019.
Reopening the beloved medieval church has taken five long years of work, and a representative of the United Kingdom needed to be at the sacred event.

Prince William and US President-elect Donald Trump met tonight at the historic Notre Dame Cathedral ceremony in Paris, France. The pair shared a warm greeting as they shook hands, and Trump placed his hand on William’s shoulder.
Prince William Traveled To France Per Request Of The Government
The medieval Catholic church was 861 years old before a devastating fire destroyed it in April 2019. The blaze obliterated the spire in just a few hours, and most of the roof collapsed. At 105 feet tall, it was the tallest building of its time.
Notre Dame’s rector expressed the sentiment,
“The cathedral carries the enveloping presence of the Virgin Mary, a maternal and embracing presence.”
He explained that the cathedral was a treasure to the French people.
“It is a magnificent symbol of unity, a sign of hope.”

Jimmy Kimmel addressed Donald Trump‘s upcoming trip to Paris on Tuesday’s (December 3) episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where he picked up on a sly dig made by the French President. “Donald Trump is heading to France this weekend to witness the reopening of the Notre Dame cathedral,” Kimmel said in his opening monologue. “And if all goes according to plan, he would like to buy it and turn it into a casino.” The late-night host then reminded viewers of Trump’s tweet from five years ago when the famous cathedral was on fire. In his tweet, the president-elect suggested “flying water tankers” to put the flames out. “Because before then, nobody had thought of using water to put out a fire,” Kimmel quipped. “That’s why he’s a genius.” While in France, Trump plans to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron, who, as Kimmel pointed out, “was...

French authorities gave a first look into the restored Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, in footage released on November 29, five years after it was devastated by a huge fire in 2019.
In April 2019, a fire broke out inside the cathedral’s roof space. By the time it was extinguished, its wooden spire had collapsed, most of the wooden roof and upper walls were severely damaged.
The cause has not been determined, but authorities believed that a cigarette or electrical issue may have started the fire.

While Tuesday may have been the biggest news day in several years for the U.S., over at the American Film Market in Las Vegas, guests would have been forgiven for not knowing a presidential election was actually taking place.
Despite Nevada being a battleground swing state, screens across the city’s casino halls and bars on Tuesday night were almost entirely showing sports — with bemused visitors struggling to find anywhere to watch the results come in. Indeed, AFM attendees could be spotted from the rest of the Vegas population by a mile: they were the only ones glued to their phones, looking puzzled as red started filling the U.S. map.

Lucas Bravo is questioning how much freedom he has on “Emily in Paris” – and whether or not he wants to return to the hit Netflix series for its fifth season.
Bravo told IndieWire while promoting Mélanie Laurent’s true crime film “Freedom” that while he is indebted to “Emily in Paris” for marking his breakout role as chef Gabriel, he thinks his character has been “slowly turned into guacamole.”
And the food parallels don’t stop there: According to Bravo, the Lily Collins-led show has become rife with narrative “souffles,” or a “lack of risk” with the character arcs. In turn, Bravo doesn’t recognize both the show and the character he first signed up to play.
“The ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of me in Season 1 and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes and because of the direction they make him take.

The BBC has axed investigative journalism show HARDtalk after nearly 30 years as part of a 130-person layoff program in its news division.
The news has emerged as part of the wider 500-person-layoff program that was announced earlier this year by Director General Tim Davie, as the corporation grapples with a deficit of £500M ($654M) amid tricky economic headwinds. Davie delivered a speech yesterday in which he urged more government funding for global news, as he warned that Russia and China are filling gaps vacated by the World Service with “unchallenged propaganda.”
The closure of HARDtalk, which will happen in five months, is part of the latest round of cuts to the hard-hit BBC News teams, which news boss Deborah Turness said today will “help meet the BBC’s savings and reinvestment challenge” in an internal email sent out in the past hour. An all-staff meeting led by Turness is currently taking place.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he would fight to make sure Netflix’s hit series Emily in Paris returns to France after the season ended with Emily in Rome.
“We will fight hard. And we will ask them to remain in Paris! Emily in Paris in Rome doesn’t make sense,” Macron said in an interview published on Wednesday.
In the fourth season of the series, Emily, played by actress Lily Collins, left behind the City of Lights for the Eternal City.

Macron, on the other hand, would beg to differ.

Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker Jodie Foster is set to star in a French movie, “Vie Privée,” the next directorial effort of Rebecca Zlotowski.
Currently filming in France, “Vie Privée” will mark Zlotowski’s follow up to “Other People’s Children,” which competed at the Venice Film Festival in 2022.
The movie is penned by Zlotowski, Anne Berest, a well-known French novelist (“The Postcard”) and screenwriter (“Happening”), alongside Gaëlle Macé. Zlotowski and Macé previously collaborated on the script of “Grand Central.” Zlotowski’s regular producer, Frederic Jouve at Paris-based Velvet Films is producing.
Foster, who was last seen in “True Detective: Night Country,” picks her roles very selectively. Her pairing with Zlotowski seems like an ideal match as they share a similar sensibility and are both interested in dramas portraying multi-faceted characters, many of which are female protagonists.
Besides “Other People’s Children,” Zlotowski is best known for directing “Une fille facile,” “Grand Central” with Lea Seydoux,...
