Taking to his Instagram stories, Adnan Sami shared a black and white throwback picture of Zakir Hussain playing the Tabla. He mentioned how Zakir was the recipient of the Grammys four times which makes his exclusion even more disappointing. Atlanta rap superstar Lil Jon’s epic performance of his classic “Turn Down for What” during the Georgia roll call at the Democratic National Convention in August wouldn’t have happened without veteran social impact strategist Ashley Spillane. After seeing the “from the window to the Walz” memes about Kamala Harris’ vice-presidential pick Tim Walz (a play on Lil Jon’s 2003 hit “Get Low”) go viral, Spillane got to work. Drawing on both her pop culture and political connections, Spillane — who served as president of Rock the Vote, the nonprofit formed in 1990 to increase turnout among 18 to 24-year-old voters — was able to join forces with Lil Jon’s longtime publicist Tamar Juda as well as key members of the Harris and DNC team to create one of the political season’s buzziest moments.
Linking pop culture to civic responsibility has long been a sweet spot for Spillane, who founded her D.

When Georgia state prosecutors announced their sprawling gang and racketeering conspiracy indictment against Grammy-winning rapper Young Thug and his many co-defendants in 2022, they knew it would generate headlines. They just didn’t know how wild and unprecedented those headlines would get.
With courtroom cameras rolling, the case would give rise to the longest criminal trial in state history. The problem-plagued proceedings would be halted by everything from a jailhouse stabbing of a defendant to the live-streamed arrest of Young Thug’s lawyer on a contempt charge that was later dropped.

New York Times reporter Joe Coscarelli‘s new book, Rap Capital: An Atlanta Story, is a thorough account of the rise of Atlanta hip-hop as a business and a culture. Through vignettes with the city’s eclectic cast of characters — rappers and businesspeople alike — Coscarelli paints a vivid portrait of the city’s unique wealth of talent. The book’s concern with 2013 until 2020 lands right as the forces of racism and capitalism, a constant source of tension within hip-hop, confronted the dawn of the streaming era. In the chapter on Migos,...

On Monday’s “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert kicked things off with a cold open gag inspired by the recent uproar over Spotify’s deal with podcaster Joe Rogan, because of the the huge amount of factually incorrect information about vaccines and Covid-19 featured on his show.
The gag was simple: A Spotify playlist where each selected song formed part of a sentence advancing lies about Covid-19 vaccines.
Of course, if you need a quick catch up: Last week Neil Young removed his music from Spotify in protest of Rogan. The same week, more than 200 scientists and medical experts released an open letter urging Spotify to quit promoting vaccine misinformation. And on Friday, Joni Mitchell announced she would be removing her music from Spotify to show solidarity with Young.
This has resulted in Spotify taking a huge stock market hit, and now it says it will add content warnings to podcasts touching on Covid.

“I’m on my way, I’m going fast,” Lil Baby promised us on his debut single “My Dawg.” The Atlanta rapper was describing his excitement to get home and have sex, Three years later, the line could just as easily stand as the perfect epigraph for the breakneck speed at which has career has advanced.
Baby’s trajectory spiked the moment he started rapping in early 2017, when he got out of jail after serving a two-year bid. Within six months, he had a Young Thug co-sign, a deal with Quality Control,...

An Avengers-style posse cut arrived today, unexpectedly. On it, J. Cole outrapped Young Thug. Merely looking at that sentence is painful. Up until this point, the only person to indisputably best Jeffery Lamar Williams on a song was Rich Homie Quan, about half a decade ago.
Then “The London” happened.
Produced by T-Minus and also featuring Travis Scott on moody chorus duties, the track is a prime example of how far Cole has ventured from his curmudgeonly comfort zone and into interesting stylistic territory. His single “Middle Child” is among...

It isn’t clear when rappers started singing better than pop stars. Maybe the opportunity was always present, just never fully cultivated. Maybe it was when waves of artists like Ja Rule and 50 Cent, T-Pain or Future, Kanye or Drake began bursting onto the scene. It might just be a byproduct of the democratization of the production process, thanks to Fruity Loops, Garageband, and even Playstation’s MTV Music Generator. Whatever the case, the trend is in full effect now. It’s close to a prerequisite for rappers to...

The rapper Yella Beezy was barely known outside of Dallas just six months ago, but when Beyoncé and Jay-z’s On the Run II tour came to town in September, they invited the 26-year-old to open for them. That’s thanks to “That’s on Me,” which is both a great single and a prophetic one: “You can snooze if you want to,” Beezy warns, “but not on me, baby.” And sure enough, the week ending September 22nd, almost a year after it originally came out, “That’s on Me...

Since February, the young Atlanta rappers Gunna and Lil Baby have become one of the most talked-about combos in hip-hop. On a string of releases — “Oh Okay” with fellow ATLien Young Thug, “Sold Out Dates” and the latest, “Drip Too Hard” — the pair have relied on a simple and beguiling formula: We-made-it boasts delivered in the tone of plaintive ballads. They match slippery vocal patterns that keen and decay with instrumentals full of flickering guitars and biting bass, often produced in part by producer Turbo.

Elton John is no Rich Homie Quan, 6lack is the anti-Gunna and On The Rvn is a pit stop that could been an entire road trip. Young Thug’s latest Ep, which dropped late Sunday night, is a pop-leaning journey where the Atlanta rapper cedes the spotlight to a Rolodex of more streaming-friendly guests. The gambit works, and creates an intriguing conundrum in its wake: Where does Thugger go from here?

Rap collaborations start, flourish and dramatically burn out once every few months. Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan’s transcendent mixtape Rich Gang: Tha Tour Pt. 1 is less than four years old, but it’s a landmark release, churning out stylistic offspring since it first dropped. The latest branches on the Rich Gang tree are Lil Baby and Gunna, who have paired up for an upcoming mixtape. The Atlanta rookies sound like embryonic reptiles that were born out of the Young Thug-indebted primordial ooze, with a dash of Quan’s...

Ask a casual fan what they like about Travis Scott, and you’re likely to hear one thing again and again: “He has the best live show in hip-hop.” It’s a cliché, a familiar refrain that hints at Scott’s talents without giving him his full due. Ultimately it’s a backhanded compliment that means little, considering how many rappers still perform over MP3s of their vocals and hire their weed carriers to crowd the stage.

There aren’t a great many artists big enough to help the top grossing nightclub in the world celebrate its seventh anniversary. Hip-hop and bass music icon Diplo fits the bill, though, and he’s uploaded his two-and-a-half-hour set from the March 21st celebration to his SoundCloud account for everyone who wasn’t able to attend.
Before going in, though, it’s worth noting that this was one of Diplo’s more mainstream-friendly performances. That said, Diplo‘s DJ set at Xs Las Vegas’ 7th anniversary celebration certainly still had its gems. He was nice enough to scrawl out a tracklist as well, so if you hear something you like then find it by...
