Sundance Now and AMC+ have released the first photos of Travis Fimmel (Vikings) and Jana McKinnon (Bad Behaviour) in the upcoming season of the Sundance Now Original Series Black Snow, currently filming in Queensland, Australia.

The new season of the six-part mystery-drama produced by Goalpost Pictures and set in the Glasshouse Mountains sees Travis Fimmel reprise his role as Detective Cormack.

Fimmel is joined by new cast members, including McKinnon, Megan Smart (Class of ’07), Alana Mansour (Erotic Stories), Dan Spielman, Victoria Haralabidou (Tourist), and Kat Stewart (Offspring).

AMC+ and Sundance Now released the first two photos from the upcoming second season of Black Snow as shooting is underway in Queensland. The photos feature returning series star Travis Fimmel (Vikings) as Detective Cormack and series newcomer Jana McKinnon (Bad Behaviour) as Zoe Jacobs.

Season one premiered in December 2022. Sundance Now hasn’t announced a launch date for the six-episode second season.

Sundance Now and AMC+ have released the official trailer for Black Snow, a new six-part series premiering on February 23, 2023. Described as part whodunit and part coming-of-age drama, Black Snow stars Travis Fimmel as a cold-case detective investigating a murder.

In addition to unveiling the official trailer, AMC+ and Sundance Now released a batch of photos ahead of the show’s two-episode premiere.

In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Fimmel described why Black Snow caught his interest.

“What intrigued me about him is that he’s a very flawed character. He’s got a lot of issues, childhood issues that he’s still dealing with, parental figures, and I think that’s the reason he became a cold-case detective,” said Fimmel. “There’s some stuff that unravels in the story that he went through that is very similar to the stuff that’s going on in the main storyline.

Newen Connect is building up its English-language scripted slate with timely, high-concept titles, including “Wagatha,” a dramatic reconstruction of the viral court case involving Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy, the wives of high-profile British footballers. Newen Connect has also acquired the Australian supernatural bromance “Limbo,” and the inclusive British mystery thriller “Blindspot.”

Written by Chris Atkins, “Wagatha” (working title) charts the High Court case which stemmed from alleged leaked Instagram stories in 2019 and opposes Rooney and Vardy. Produced by Chalkboard and commissioned by Channel 4, “Wagatha” stars Chanel Cresswell, the BAFTA-winning actor of “This is England” and Natalia Tena (“Game of Thrones”). The six-part series follows the mystery of a small-town murder that rocked North Queensland’s Australian South Sea Islander community. The show is financed and produced in association with All3Media International, which is handling international sales. Sundance Now is releasing in U.S.

Also starring are newcomers Talijah Blackman-Corowa and Jemmason Power with Brooke Satchwell, Alexander England, Rob Carlton, Erik Thomson, Kym Gyngell, and Australian singer Ziggy Ramo making his screen debut.

Australian streaming service Stan has struck a television development alliance with Hollywood mini-studio Lionsgate. The deal is in addition to the content supply agreement that the pair hatched last year.

Stan and Lionsgate announced the megachurch family drama series “Prosper,” drama series “The Geography of Friendship” and outback comedy crime series “Population: 11” as the first three titles to flow from their development deal.

Separately, Stan announced an expansion of its originals-production activity with other partners and suppliers in Australia. The company says that the new slates put it “on track to deliver 30% of its premium first-run slate from original productions.”

The local slate includes: drama series “Black Snow,” a cold case mystery series set in Far North Queensland; “Last Light,” starring Matthew Fox and Joanne Froggatt; and “The Jump,” a series about the power of friendship and the ways our sadness can unite us.

Shelley Birse has taken home the Australian Writers’ Guild’s (Awg) 2020 John Hinde Award for Science Fiction Writing for Stan Original series The Commons.

Birse, the creator of the show, receives $10,000 for the drama which offers a glimpse into a not-too-distant future where climate change and biotechnology raise important ethical questions for humanity.

The annual award, first presented in 2008, is funded by a bequest from the late film critic John Hinde. It was Hinde’s wish that future generations of Australian science-fiction screenwriters be nurtured through industry opportunities.

Highly commended in the produced category were Antony Webb’s Awgie-nominated short film Carmentis and episode 13 of The Unlisted, written by Mithila Gupta.

The Australian Writers’ Guild (Awg) has opened applications for the 2020 John Hinde Award for Excellence in Science-Fiction Writing.

Funded by a bequest from the late film critic John Hinde, the prize offers $10,000 for the best produced script and professional support to the best unproduced script.

Entries may be science-fiction feature film, television series or miniseries, web series, audio, animation, children’s television, or interactive media.

Both scripts receive entry to the Awg’s Pathway Program. The unproduced winner will have an experienced genre producer read their work, and be set up with a meeting with an industry professional, hand-selected for their particular script.

Past winners in the produced category include Lucas Taylor’s Eleven Eleven in 2019, the late Cris Jones’ feature The Death and Life of Otto Bloom in 2017, episode five of Cleverman by Michael Miller in 2016, and Jesse O’Brien’s feature film Arrowhead in 2015.

Shaun Grant, Tony McNamara, Jacquelin Perske, Andrew Knight, Kate Mulvany, Jan Sardi and Mac Gudgeon were among the recipients of the 52nd annual Awgie Awards presented in Sydney on Thursday night.

Grant won the feature film adaptation prize for True History of the Kelly Gang while McNamara and Deborah Davis shared best original feature screenplay for The Favourite.

Sardi and Gudgeon accepted the award on Grant’s behalf; he is in La and will head to Toronto for the world premiere of Justin Kurzel’s bushranger tale which stars George Mackay, Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult, Essie Davis and Harry Greenwood.

Syfy has partnered with sister company Sky to launch its sci-fi Vr experience Eleven Eleven in Europe.

The NBCUniversal Networks-backed broadcaster is set to launch the story, designed for virtual reality (Vr) and augmented reality (Ar) at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival.

It will then roll the service out in Sky territories – the pay-tv giant operates in the UK, Germany and Italy – in late May.

Produced in association with Digital Domain, Eleven Eleven is influenced by immersive theatre, using storytelling techniques that enable users to view the action from multiple perspectives.
