Netflix is one of the largest streaming services, and, aside from having other licensed titles on its platform, it has also created a name as a studio. Its titles often feature high-profile actors, and despite some of them not often enchanting both the critics and the audience, the streamer has had an amazing few months.
One of the titles that received major success recently is Cameron Diaz's Back in Action. The action comedy, which stars Diaz and Jamie Foxx as retired spies, also comes with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the actress' long break from acting. Per Tudum, the break didn't stop her from continuing to be one of the biggest action stars, as Back in Action joined Netflix's prestigious Most Popular Movies list.

Actor and filmmaker Jonah Hill will star and direct in the upcoming studio comedy Cut Off, expected to enter production later this year.
Jonah Hill has signed up to make Cut Off for Warner Bros, a studio comedy that is expected to begin production later this year after obtaining $10m worth of Californian tax credits. The project is in the fairly early stages of pre-production, having not yet assembled its cast. It marks the return of Hill to the director’s chair following Mid90s and Stultz.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is set to focus ‘on a pair of fraternal twins whose wealthy parents stop supporting them financially’ which sounds like a narrative conceit ripe for laughs. There’s no word as yet as to whether Hill will play both twins of if the film will be taking the Schwarzenegger/DeVito approach to casting.

Cameron Diaz's Comeback Movie Lands On Netflix's Elite Most-Viewed Charts 3 Months After Its Release
The new Cameron Diaz movie has become a global streaming sensation. The American actor became an A-list star off the back of prominent romantic comedies from the late 1990s, including My Best Friend's Wedding (in which she played Julia Roberts' romantic rival) and There's Something About Mary (in which she played the title role opposite Ben Stiller). She has also taken on major projects in other genres, including starring in 2000's Charlie's Angels and its 2003 sequel Full Throttle, as well as voicing Princess Fiona in DreamWorks' animated Shrek franchise.
However, for a full decade between 2014 and 2024, she starred in no movies at all. Cameron Diaz retired from acting, with her final project until 2025 being the 2014 remake of Annie starring Quvenzhané Wallis and Jamie Foxx. She spent that decade focusing on her family, working to "reclaim" her life, and working in the wellness space, including launching an organic wine brand and publishing The Longevity Book.

Gwyneth Paltrow calls Marty Supreme her first serious acting role in years. Marty Supreme is an upcoming semi-biographical comedy directed by Josh Safdie, half of the now-dissolved directing duo the Safdie Brothers. The film will feature Timothée Chalamet as a professional table tennis player named Marty Mauser, who is pursuing greatness. Paltrow will star opposite Chalamet in a cast that includes Sandra Bernhard, Fran Drescher, Odessa A'zion, and Tyler the Creator. The film is set for release on December 25.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Paltrow discusses acting in Marty Supreme. The actor notes that she feels that Marty Supreme gave her her first highly dramatic acting role since 2010's Country Strong. She also quotes advice from actor and friend Cameron Diaz, who encouraged Paltrow to think about "deepening [her] life." Safdie also notes that he thinks Paltrow's "absence from acting has lent a vulnerability to her abilities." Check out the full quote...

While Netflix's slick but empty "The Electric State" has added to an already bleak streaming landscape, Jake Gyllenhaal is having nothing short of a streaming renaissance. Gyllenhaal's creepy sci-fi horror "Life" is a hit on Prime Video at the same time his and Michael Peña's action thriller is crushing it over on Max. Now, yet another Gyllenhaal-led thriller is ascending the Netflix charts, meaning the actor has claimed a spot in the rankings of the biggest streamer in the game at the same time he's dominating rival platforms — though he's had a bit of help with his latest streaming triumph.

Shonen anime is one of the most popular genres of anime, and it earned that popularity largely from the legendary anime that paved the way back in the 1990s. Many anime at the forefront of discussions today are from the '90s, whether it be Dragon Ball or JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, which was revived with a remake in 2012. What makes many shonen anime stand out is the fights.
Fights are the core of any good shonen anime, which can either make or break one’s viewing experience if the action is lacking in any way. When scoping through the golden age of shonen anime from the '90s, some shonen anime, in particular, had iconic arcs with amazing fights that had fans pleading for more.

Move over Winnie-the-Pooh, there's a new public domain killer on the loose, and his name is Steamboat Willie. The beloved Disney character is getting the horror treatment thanks to Terrifier franchise producers in the new film Screamboat, which also features Art the Clown actor David Howard Thornton as the killer mouse. The official red-band trailer for the horror flick directed by Steven Lamorte was recently released (seen below), and it showcases all the gory carnage we can expect when the film hits theaters on April 12.
"Welcome aboard the Staten Island Ferry," the trailer begins before we're presented with one of the biggest horror tropes ever: the doomsday defeatist. "This boat is cursed," the man says. "We're all going to die!" From there, we see the cast of Screamboat that inevitably gets picked off one-by-one by a shrunk-down Thornton, who portrays the character first made famous by Disney in 1928, and entered the public domain on Jan.

Anyone who’s ever been skeptical about the safety of capitalizing on cryptocurrency will have their worst suspicions confirmed by “Cold Wallet,” a shrewd and suspenseful thriller about three would-be working-class vigilantes determined to retrieve their investments from an amoral scammer. Right from the start, director Cutter Hodierne develops a rooting interest in his self-styled avengers, even as (also right from the start) it’s clear that they are in way, way over their heads and sinking lower as the plot progresses.
We’re introduced to Billy (Raúl Castillo), an underemployed screw-up, while he loudly proclaims to other customers in a Berkshires karaoke bar that he’s been “following crypto since that Game Stop thing,” and brags that his investment in a currency called Tulip is going nowhere but up. But it really isn’t, much to his shock after he promises his young daughter (Joanna Sylvie Weinig) that he...

For whatever reason, Sony became convinced that crafting an entire franchise set in the Spider-Man universe without featuring the webslinger himself was a good idea. In fairness, Kevin Feige and the folks at Marvel Studios did create the most successful box office franchise in history by taking lesser-known characters and giving them the A-list character treatment. But the key thing there was that those early Marvel Cinematic Universe films were actually pretty good. At the least, they were solid blockbuster entertainment. Sony, on the other hand, has pumped out a string of truly bewildering films based on the Marvel characters to which it owns the rights.
"Morbius," for example, became nothing short of a joke upon its 2022 release, with Sony then trying to double down on that joke with a theatrical re-release that also flopped. Just in case the studio hadn't already doomed its then lamentably-titled "Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (Spumc)," Sony delivered,...

Most of them are familiar faces but there is one new, very important addition: Welcome to the family, Zendaya.

Back In Action. (L to R) Cameron Diaz as Emily and Jamie Foxx as Matt in Back In Action. Cr. John Wilson/Netflix © 2024. Jamie Foxx, an Oscar winner known for electrifying performances across genres, is no stranger to action-packed films. From his intense role in White House Down to the vampire-hunting thrills of Day Shift and his turn as Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Foxx has seen—and been part of—some truly remarkable stunt work. But according to him, his latest project, Back in Action, showcases the evolution of stunt work in a way that left him thoroughly impressed. The action-comedy, which marks the on-screen reunion of Foxx and Cameron Diaz, is packed with adrenaline-pumping sequences. Diaz, herself a veteran of action films like Charlie’s Angels and Knight and Day, certainly knows her way around high-octane stunts. Still, even with their combined experience, both stars were blown away...

Prime Video's police drama On Call is something different, and not just because of its unique visual style. The series offers up a perspective that isn't found in other scripted procedurals, as well as a cast that sets a different tone than similar shows. It's almost hard to believe that the series hails from Wolf Entertainment, which is the most recognizable procedural brand in television -- including the Law & Order, One Chicago and FBI franchises.
In an interview with Cbr, On Call co-creators and executive producers Eliot Wolf and Tim Walsh talked about moving Wolf Entertainment into the streaming world for the first time. They also spoke about the expectations created by that brand name, and how they factored those in when developing the series. And with the first season now in the hands of audiences, what did they love most about the show?

Smokey's connection with East Barrio and Officer Harmon triggers the primary conflict in On Call, paving the way for the show's exploration of themes surrounding loyalty, revenge, and justice. Created by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf, On Call focuses on the crime-solving endeavors of two police officers, Harmon and Diaz, who have a mentor-trainee relationship. Throughout the Amazon Prime Video detective show's runtime, Harmon and Diaz find themselves dealing with myriad criminal activities, forcing them to navigate the murky waters of upholding the law and confronting complex moral decisions.
Although On Call walks through a new set of side stories in each episode, it has an overarching storyline, driven by Harmon's ties with a former convict named Smokey. The more the show progresses, the more it becomes evident that Harmon's connection with Smokey is a complicated and dangerous entanglement for both parties.

Troian Bellisario and Brandon Larracuente are teaming up for On Call. “On Call,” the upcoming Wolf Entertainment drama, isn’t like the other Dick Wolf dramas on television.
The series is the company’s first scripted streaming series, rolling out all nine episodes on Amazon Prime Video on Jan. 9. It’s the first half-hour drama Wolf Entertainment has released — and the first show Elliot Wolf and Tim Walsh created.
“I think that for us, the biggest thing was we both had something to prove. We had, I think, a self-imposed chip on our shoulders, not only to make it great, but to make it feel different than everything that we previously worked on, everything that we see on the television landscape today,” Wolf tells Variety.

It takes less than three minutes for the latest drama to bear Dick Wolf’s name to drop an F-bomb, adopt the dashcam, and violently kill off a familiar face at point blank range. For a man renowned for his ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it approach’ to network television, it’s akin to Dylan going electric.
Initially planned for IMDb TV and then Freevee before finding a home on Prime Video, “On Call” is also Wolf’s first straight-to-streaming project (“Law & Order: Organized Crime” only moved to Peacock in its fifth season), while each episode is done and dusted within a binge-friendly 30 minutes.

“On Call” is a decent small-scale police procedural. But is it decent enough when it comes from the house of Dick Wolf?
The pedigreed eight-part show traded broadcast networks for Prime Video, where it will premiere Thursday. The novelty is that each episode is a bite-sized 30 minutes, with modest character arcs that extend over multiple episodes, and multiple seemingly random crime sequences that propel individual installments.
The result feels like “Cops” with a script. The ride-along series puts the audience largely behind the wheel with Traci Harmon. She’s a divorced surfer with a chip on her shoulder, a junkie sister and a troubled relationship with her fellows on the force. She’s wound as tight as her bun.

In many ways, On Call is reminiscent of David Ayer's Jake Gyllenhaal-starring action thriller, End of Watch. Like the David Ayer movie, Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf's On Call focuses on the everyday challenges two police officers, Harmon and Diaz, face while attempting to resolve crimes and maintain peace in their neighborhood.

Troian Bellisario’s On Call tells the story of Long Beach Police training officer Traci Harmon, who takes on a new trainee in the wake of her old trainee being murdered while on call. While the show has an overarching story, from episode to episode it follows on-duty officers on patrol and how hard their everyday work is. At the beginning of the show, Officer Maria Delgado is shot dead while on call. The man who shot her happens to be a part of a massive Long Beach gang. It seems there’s an understanding between the gang and the police, but this murder is a violation of that understanding, so the gang comes under the radar. On the other hand, Diaz, Harmon’s new trainee, has his own trauma that makes him wonder if he can trust his trainer at all. Of course, by the end of the show,...

I did not have Troian Bellisario playing a cop on my 2025 bingo card, but dang, it’s exciting for sure. I know a lot of us grew up watching Pretty Little Liars, however, you don’t understand my obsession with Spencer Hastings. I digress because we’re not here to talk about why Troian is a fantastically underrated actress; we’re here to talk about her new show. On Call tells the story of regular cops out and about trying to save the day. That’s the simplest way to put it. Troian plays Traci Harmon, a trainer officer who teaches the rookies how to do the job. When tragedy strikes, Traci takes it upon herself to solve the case with the help of her new trainee, Alex Diaz. While the show has an overarching revenge-ish story, the main plot revolves around Harmon and Diaz’s daily pursuit to be fantastic On Call cops.

Back in Action is an appropriate name for Cameron Diaz's return film as the upcoming Netflix action comedy marks her first big-screen appearance in over a decade. With Diaz back in the spotlight and slowly regaining her passion for acting, the veteran star names the one rule she has for accepting new roles after unretiring.
Speaking with Empire, Diaz addressed her acting comeback and named her one condition for accepting future parts. Insisting she's "not defining anything," Diaz stated she'd happily accept new roles as long as it makes sense for herself and her family. However, she laid down one golden rule for the rest of her acting career; no more romantic comedies. “I don’t know how I view it. It’s hard to say. If I say it then it becomes this thing. The last time Cameron Diaz graced our screens, the BAFTA nominee was singing up a storm and cussing out kids as the villainous Miss Hannigan in Will Gluck’s 2014 Annie remake. Now, after a ten-year hiatus from Hollywood, Diaz is gearing up to make her return to movies in aptly titled Netflix joint Back In Action. Assuredly not a remake of *that* early noughties Looney Tunes movie, this one is instead a spy comedy caper from Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon that reunites Diaz with her Annie and Any Given Sunday co-star Jamie Foxx. This time out, the duo play Emily and Matt, a seemingly ordinary suburban couple whose past lives as elite CIA agents comes back to haunt them when their cover gets spectacularly blown.
For Diaz, who’s spent the last decade raising a family with former Good Charlotte guitarist husband Benji Madden, it was the Foxx factor that swung her cinematic comeback.

If you were to walk up to somebody 20 years ago and ask them about a film's length, a common consensus was likely to emerge: the longer the runtime, the less appealing it is to watch. In 2024, however, the response might be different. In 2021, the Los Angeles Times reported a study that concluded less than half of moviegoers are dissuaded by lengthy runtimes. In 2023, Slate reported that the average runtime of the 10 highest-grossing movies in the United States was 2 hours and 23 minutes -- over 20 minutes longer than 20 years ago. With rising trends in long-form content engagement across film, television, and online video, it has become clear that people are ready for longer viewing experiences, TikTok attention spans be damned.
Most people look at beefy, historical epics like "The Ten Commandments" and "Lawrence of Arabia" as the be-all and end-all of long-form cinema, but those are just the tip of the iceberg.
