Cillian Murphys 2019 spy thriller Anna receives a middling accuracy score from expert Naveed Jamali. Directed by Luc Besson, known for Lon: The Professional and The Fifth Element, the movie followed Anna Poliatova (Sasha Luss), an undercover assassin for the Russian government who becomes a double agent. Along with Luss and Murphy, the cast of Anna included Luke Evans, Lera Abova, Alexander Petrov, and Helen Mirren. Upon release, the film generated $31.6 million and, and while reactions have varied among audiences, it's managed to perform well on streaming.
In a recent video from Insider, Jamali, who was a double agent working for the FBI while pretending to help Russian intelligence, looked at the accuracy of Anna. Watching a scene in which Leonard Miller (Murphy) talks Anna into helping the CIA, Jamali explained how some of that arrangement, and Annas approach, were realistic, however, he explained that Leonard wouldnt have the authority to send her somewhere.

Dermot Mulroney is a mysterious figure whose darkness may extend well beyond the surface in Depravity. Having first found acclaim in such smaller dramatic fare as Long Gone and The Thing Called Love, Mulroney would become well-known for his work as the love interest in a number of iconic titles, including My Best Friend's Wedding and New Girl, while also co-starring in the likes of About Schmidt and The Family Stone. More recently, Mulroney has found success with the likes of Scream VI, Anyone but You and Marvel's Secret Invasion.
In Depravity, Mulroney stars as Mr. Evers, a peculiar tenet of an old-fashioned apartment building. Watched closely by his neighbors, Grace and Aria, Mr. Evers is generally seen coming and going at odd times of the night with his Rottweiler in tow, while also having a group of bizarre visitors in and out of his apartment. In her latest film “Depravity,” Victoria Justice steps away from her typically wholesome roles into mature territory. The thriller follows college roommates Grace and Aria, played by Justice and Devon Ross, as they investigate their mysterious neighbor Mr. Evers. Their investigation leads them to discover stolen artwork and spirals into a dangerous situation.
Justice portrays Grace, a thrill-seeking law student drawn to danger. “She finds the excitement and risk really appealing,” Justice said. For her first intimate scene filmed on the first day, Justice was nervous but credited the director with creating a comfortable environment. Her co-star Taylor John Smith regularly checked on her comfort level to ease tensions.
Ross depicts the more reserved Aria, who is still coping with past trauma. “Aria is an introverted creative type,” Ross explained. “She likely doesn’t want more darkness in her life.” Despite Aria’s reluctance, Ross enjoyed filming physical fight scenes...

Victoria Justice and Devon Ross are a pair of college friends who get wrapped up in a dangerous situation in Depravity. Justice first rose to stardom with her tenure on Nickelodeon, first starring in the teen comedy Zoey 101 for seasons 2-4 before going on to lead her own show, Victorious, and has since starred in everything from Fox's Rocky Horror Picture Show remake to the Netflix supernatural comedy Afterlife of the Party. Ross, on the other hand, is an on-the-rise actor, with her breakout role having recently come in the Alicia Vikander-led Irma Vep miniseries.

A Belgian farmer fights to save his family and fellow villagers from a ruthless German soldier at the dawn of World War I. The Last Front depicts the horrifying slaughter of innocent civilians with frank realism and a poetic contrast to their gentle, bucolic lives. Director/co-writer Julien Hayet-Kerknawi channels Terrence Malick as we hear both a torn protagonist and his cruel adversary's inner thoughts. War forces peaceful men to violence while also feeding the worst instincts of a merciless invader. The Last Front doesn't quite succeed in every facet of its artistic intent, but is a powerfully emotional experience.
Set in Flanders, Belgium in August 1914, Commander Maximilian Von Rauch (Philippe Brenninkmeyer) leads a battalion of German soldiers towards rural villages. His son, Lt. Laurentz (Joe Anderson) sees no distinction between enemy soldiers and civilians. He executes women and children after one of his men is shot by a sniper.

In 2015, director Julien Hayet-Kerknawi created a short movie, A Broken Man, which followed the tragic tale of a simple farmer whose family is swept into the perils of World War I. Nine years later, he rewrote and expanded this concept into a feature-length movie, The Last Front. Set in Belgium during the invasion of the German army in an event now known as the "Rape of Belgium," The Last Front follows widowed farmer Leonard (Iain Glen), and his children, including his son Adrian (James Downie). Adrien and his father are at odds over Adrian's love interest, the cloistered and wealthy neighbor Louise (Sasha Luss). However, father and son must reconcile right as danger reaches their doorstep with devastating results.

Set in 1914, amidst the early months of World War I, The Last Front takes us to a lesser-known period of history. Director Julien Hayet-Kerknawi brings us to Flanders, Belgium, to witness the horrific “Rape of Belgium” as invading German forces unleash violence upon innocent civilians.
We follow farmer Leonard Lambert and his family, whose quiet lives are shattered with the arrival of the brutal Lieutenant Laurentz and his regiment. Though not a large production, Hayet-Kerknawi’s debut feature aims high. With its focus on ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances, the film spotlights a tragic chapter that has faded from memory.
While an imperfect work, strong central performances help elevate the dramatic tale. Iain Glen and up-and-coming actress Sasha Luss anchor the film with grounded and feeling portrayals of parents fighting to protect their children from the ravages of war.

Iain Glen, Ser Jorah Mormont in Game Of Thrones, is feisty as ever as a family man facing down the tumultuous start of World War I in The Last Front by Belgian filmmaker Julien Hayet-Kerknawi, the first release by his new indie label Enigma. It opens on 250 screens.
Metrograph Pictures is out with Good One, its first title since expanding into theatrical releasing under the leadership of former A24 executive David Laub. The debut feature by India Donaldson has great reviews at 96% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes and starts in limited release on three screens in New York and LA.
The theatrical market is pretty complicated right now and original independent films have fewer champions. These new indie distributors — and there are others — see a necessity and a business proposition in nurturing them.
“There is still very much an audience for these movies when they are really good,” Laub tells Deadline.

Latency Review: Sasha Luss Is Great In Sci-Fi Thriller With Less Answers Than A Black Mirror Episode
Sasha Luss delivers a compelling performance in Latency, holding up the movie's emotional weight. James Croke's stylish direction creates an immersive atmosphere with impressive visuals. Despite these strong points, the movie falls flat with an uninspired and underdeveloped storyline.
As the world of virtual reality and artificial intelligence technology grows and becomes more immersive, it's frequently found itself at the center of many sci-fi stories. Whether it be the blockbuster escape of Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One or the more thought-provoking episodes of Black Mirror, VR and AI can be utilized for a variety of themes and storytelling. With James Croke's Latency, not only is the exact meaning of the film a mystery, but the lack of thrills is just as baffling.

Written and directed by James Croke, Latency is about an agoraphobic gamer trying a new technological device that reads one's brain. As the film progresses, the device does more than that. Said gamer is Hana, played by Sasha Luss. Hana is a so-called "has been" who glimpses a chance to win back glory, and also money, through a gaming tournament. The new device, which sits in the back of her head, improves her reaction time, and allows her to type or play without even touching the keyboard or screen. The calibrating scenes, essentially a training montage, are fun, and there is a promising one titled "pain". It promised too much; Hana only had to cut herself a little. Similarly, the tournament is disappointing as the...

"The more you wear the Omnia, the faster it will learn." Lionsgate has unveiled the official trailer for an indie tech horror thriller called Latency, from filmmaker James Croke. This is another of these intriguing A.I. horror films, more of a sci-fi thriller, though it also has some scary moments in it. Starring Sasha Luss (Anna) and Alexis Ren (The Enforcer), Latency marks the feature debut of writer / director James Croke. This sci-fi thriller follows a professional gamer battling acute agoraphobia, tasked with testing new gaming equipment powered by A.I. - capable of reading her mind. As they experiment with this new tech, the line between reality and Hana's subconscious begins to blur and she starts to wonder if the device is helping her or serving a more sinister force. A.I. serving a more sinister force? Yes, it definitely is (that sinister force being greed). This looks a bit derivative,...

Victoria Justice, best known for her starring role on Nickelodeon’s “Victorious,” recently said on SiriusXM’s “Hits 1 LA with Tony Fly and Symon” while promoting her new single “Raw” that her upcoming role in the movie “Depravity” required her to film her first sex scene. The experience was “uncomfortable” but the crew pulled it off with “taste.”
“My first day on set I had my first ever sex scene. I’m like, ‘Really, guys? We’re gonna schedule this for the first day? Cool. Thanks for that,'” Justice said. “It is uncomfortable. I was actually very nervous about it and totally anxious about the entire situation, and I was like, ‘Did I make the wrong choice? I don’t know if I should do this.'”

Last awards season was all about Cillian Murphy. Longtime collaborator Christopher Nolan finally gave him a lead role in Oppenheimer which led to them both taking home Oscars for the first time in their illustrious careers. The dynamic and versatile Murphy is at his very best as he embodies the brilliant but emotionally troubled nuclear scientist who created the first atomic bombs that would be used to end World War II. Murphy's pre-Oppenheimer career is interesting to look at given how varied it is; and among the best of these roles is the provocative espionage thriller, Anna, which is currently trending on Netflix. Directed by acclaimed French filmmaker Luc Besson, Murphy is joined by a strong cast of Sasha Luss, Luke Evans, and Helen Mirren in a criminally underrated performance as Anna's handler, Olga. But it is Murphy's turn as CIA Agent Leonard "Lenny" Miller that really stands out in...

Anna is a thrilling and complex story of a government agent turned assassin, joining the ranks of other great spy movies like The Bourne Identity. Luc Besson's Anna presents a unique view of the assassin world, combining double-crosses and Russian espionage for an exciting action-packed experience. Films like Salt, The Killer, and John Wick show strong portrayals of skilled assassins, blending intense action with emotional depth and thrilling plots.
From John Wick to Atomic Blonde to The Bourne Identity, there are plenty of great action thrillers like Anna that explore the gruesome life of an assassin. Although it was released five years ago, Anna has found a whole new fan base since climbing the streaming charts on Netflix. Anna, a 2019 action thriller, is finding new success on Netflix despite being a critical and commercial failure upon its initial release. The movie shares similarities with Jennifer Lawrence's Red Sparrow, both featuring Russian spies who become double agents in stylized action sequences. While Red Sparrow may have outperformed Anna financially, audience reaction to Anna's explosive action scenes has been more positive.
Anna is proving to be a surprise hit with Netflix viewers, but the action movie is more than just a little bit reminiscent of a Jennifer Lawrence movie from 2018. Despite first being released five years ago, Luc Besson's Anna has found new popularity on Netflix, where it has been making its way up the charts. However, Anna shares more than a few things in common with a divisive Jennifer Lawrence film that's so far yet to have its day in the sun.

Both the CIA and Kgb believed Anna had died at the end of the 2019 cult spy movie, though this is due to Olga swapping Anna for a body double. Olga let Anna escape, though this was mainly because it also ensured Olga could become head of the Kgb. Despite the Anna movie ending leaving the plot open for a sequel, the box office performance may mean it never happens.
The Anna movie ending is filled with twists and turns as the titular Russian assassin faces off against both the CIA and the Kgb to secure her freedom. Anna Poliatova (Sasha Luss) pulls off several intelligent deceptions, including a final ruse to get out from under the thumbs of both the U.S. and Russia's spy agencies with the help of Olga (Helen Mirren), her Kgb supervisor. Among the most admired French filmmakers of the last 30 years, Luc Besson is no stranger to Hollywood successes and failures. The writer/director behind such popular movies as Leon: The Professional, Lucy, and The Fifth Element has also taken big cinematic swings that have not fared so well with critics and the moviegoing masses. Case in point, Besson's poorly-rated assassin thriller Anna came and went with very little fanfare and critical acclaim in 2019. Fortunately, the movie is experiencing newfound popularity on Netflix after joining the platform in 2024.
Sasha Luss stars as Anna Poliatova in the action thriller, a Russian fashion model who moonlights as a trained killer for the Kgb. Consigned to a five-year assignment under the direction of senior Kgb agent Olga (Helen Mirren), Anna becomes mixed up in a deadly cat-and-mouse game involving the CIA, double agents, secret defectors, and more. A Cillian Murphy-starring action movie from five years ago is currently working its way up the Netflix charts, and it's the closest the actor has come to starring in a John Wick film. Murphy's Oppenheimer Oscar success has given the Irish star new levels of fame following an already impressive career. Murphy enjoyed a long and successful career long before he became an Academy Award winner. Now, one of Murphy's lesser-known movies from 2019 has found itself trending on Netflix, and the comparisons to the John Wick franchise are inescapable.
Many movies and TV shows like John Wick have popped up ever since the first installment in the series was released in 2014. While a handful of John Wick copycats have proven to be hits, most have failed to make an impact. One such movie, which was initially dismissed when it first came out, has found renewed interest on Netflix.

Asphalt City (Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire)
I entered Asphalt City at last year’s EnergaCAMERIMAGE festival with nothing but morbid curiosity. Having engendered some rank responses from its Cannes premiere and not secured any known U.S. distributor, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s film had the right kind of bad-object energy one needs at the jetlagged start to their week in a small Polish city. (Or just the comfort I personally get from a Brooklyn-shot feature featuring two Club Random guests.) I walked away boasting complicated, fascinated enthusiasm: nearly every second is ridiculous and never boring, and it doesn’t not deserve to play at a cinematography festival––having the most cinematography counts for something. Exclusive: Taylor John Smith (Where The Crawdads Sing) is attached to star in What’s Left of Us, based on the 2009 memoir by Ritchie Farrell who has adapted for screen.
The project marks the next directing effort of The Fighter and Patriot’s Day scribe Paul Tamasy who most recently made his directorial debut on Paramount acquisition Depravity, also starring Smith.
What’s Left of Us charts the tough upbringing of Farrell in a working class neighbourhood in Massachusetts. To overcome a birth defect, his father pushed him to become a star athlete – sometimes he would use a belt as a teaching tool. Once, he used an electric carving knife. By the time he was 30, he was a heroin addict, stealing from friends, shooting up during visits to his children and running from shameful family secrets.

Whatever one may think of Luc Besson’s oeuvre, his films work best when they live up to their trashy potential. The director’s cinema is littered with all-out demented interludes and comic-book exaggerations. Think of Rihanna quoting Paul Verlaine’s poem “A Poor Young Shepherd” while gyrating on a stripper pole in his intergalactic romp Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets; or, more recently, Russian supermodel Sasha Luss mowing down throngs of thugs inside a restaurant in Anna. Besson’s always been particularly fluent in the art of the unreal, and Dogman, his latest, is engineered as one such tale: a pulpy story of an outcast who turns a whole pack of dogs into loyal allies in his fight against injustice. But the film never owns up to its deranged premise, and a staid, predetermined script sands off its most shamelessly ridiculous moments––the only moments when Dogman truly comes to life.

"We can be heroes," sang David Bowie, "just for one day." Now, a new action thriller from writer-director Jordan Gertner suggests that four friends with particular skill sets could be, if just for one day...Sheroes. It's a fun title that matches the equally entertaining vibe in this Thailand-set popcorn flick starring Isabelle Fuhrman, Sasha Luss, Wallis Day, and Skai Jackson.
Sheroes has a simple premise: The group of four ventures overseas for a weekend of fun, which quickly goes awry after a luggage mix-up. Pretty soon, drug lords are after them... and one of them gets kidnapped! From there, it's all swanky nightclubs, explosions, and an epic phone call that would make Taken star Liam Neeson proud...

The intention of Sheroes seems incredibly clear: To make a fun, female-centric action comedy. While Sheroes has potential, it feels like an interesting idea that never came to fruition but was greenlit as a film anyway. While there is fun to be had, the story goes nowhere, and the characters don't feel believable. Sheroes jumps from point A to point B without anything to say or much direction, creating a mediocre action experience.
