Exploding Kittens adult animation series showcases humor, mayhem, and animated cats in a biblical twist on divine characters. Television notables like Tom Ellis and Sasheer Zamata bring the characters of Godcat and Devilcat to life in a silly and chaotic way. The new Netflix show inspired by the tabletop card game has mixed reviews but remains true to the original game's spirit of fun and absurdity.

Tom Ellis finds playing God in Exploding Kittens a fun and different experience than his last supernatural role as Lucifer. The hilarious animated series features Godcat (Ellis) and Devilcat (Zamata) in a unique battle of good vs. evil. The exciting season finale promises a potential second season with even more crazy cat antics to come, teases Ellis. He also teased his upcoming movie Thursday Murder Club, with Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.
Lucifer hottie Tom Ellis is first to admit that being God in Netlixs new animated romp, Exploding Kittens, is a different experience than hes used to. In a recent MovieWeb interview he went on to say: It obviously wasn't lost on me when they approached me about playing God. I was like, Okay, so, you know, I've got a promotion, that's great.' When it came to adapting his popular tabletop card game into the “Exploding Kittens” 2D animated series (currently streaming on Netflix), Matthew Inman found inspiration in an old girlfriend’s schizophrenic cat, who got so disturbing that a priest was called to exorcise its demons. The premise became the ultimate fight between good and evil when God (Tom Ellis) and the Devil (Sasheer Zamata) are both fired and sent to Earth to reconnect with humanity, trapped inside the bodies of two chubby house cats.
While Godcat is tasked with turning around a dysfunctional family through empathy, Devilcat, his next-door neighbor, stirs up trouble as the destructive anti-Christ. “When I got paired up with [executive producers] Mike Judge and Greg Daniels [of ‘King of the Hill’], it kind of all just came together and it clicked,” Inman told IndieWire.

When it was announced that Matthew Inman's surprise-hit party game Exploding Kittens would be adapted into an episodic animated series on Netlix, it raised a few eyebrows. The game a fast-paced card game meant for two to five players, based entirely around betrayal, explosions, cat toys and a generous dash of weirdness in the vein of Cards Against Humanity doesn't have much in the way of story. It did, however, have mass appeal, given its astounding success as a pitch on Kickstarter. So, naturally, it was prime TV material, right?
Created by Shane Kosakowski and Matthew Inman, Exploding Kittens turns the simple party game into a cosmic battle for good and evil, led by God and the Devil as cute little kitties. God (Tom Ellis) has been slacking at his job lately. He's been neglecting his duties as the all-powerful creator, watching movies about pterodactyls, burning down the west wing of Heaven,...

With much anticipation from fans of the Exploding Kittens tabletop game and the comedic stylings of Matthew Inman of online infamy with his webcomic "The Oatmeal," the recent release of the Netflix Original is set to please. But what is the connection between the award-winning game, The Oatmeal, and TV series? Do they share a common thread besides its creator, or is the Netflix adaptation set to be its own beast?
We will examine the TV show and the card game it is based on to see if they are related beyond a name and artistic style. We will break down both so fans new to the franchise will have a better idea of what to expect, regardless of how they want to experience Exploding Kittens.

The adult animation boom seen over the last few decades has produced some of modern television’s most exciting series. “BoJack Horseman,” “Archer,” “Primal,” “Rick and Morty,“ “Tuca & Bertie,” “Blue Eye Samurai,” and even “X-Men ’97” (just to name a few) all used their limitless medium to push serialized storytelling in new directions. But peak TV also created a slew of exhausting, unimaginative copycats — cheap knockoffs of popular and/or innovative shows that operated under the principle that all they had to do to get laughs was make cartoon characters curse about pop culture. Blame “South Park” for amplifying the shock value of “Kids Say the Darnedest Things” or “Family Guy” for tricking a generation of teens into thinking random movie references were the pinnacle of comedy writing. Either way, you end up here, with a bunch of aimless animated programs served up to subscribers whenever they finish bingeing “American Dad.

Even before Covid made a virtue of isolation, experts had already been describing loneliness as an epidemic for years. Now that even the most social among us have had loneliness imposed upon us as a matter of public policy, it seems to be an issue that’s top of mind for TV creators to process through their work. Baby Reindeer revolves around two lonely people who find communion, by chance, over Diet Coke in a neighborhood pub; the disastrous fallout comes later. The titular Mr. & Mrs. Smith find each other in part because they’ve built the kind of lives they can disappear from without causing alarm to friends or loved ones who’d miss them. Ripley’s eponymous protagonist is alone by necessity: the kinds of short cons he’s running for his livelihood depend on his remaining anonymous.

He’s not just a cat, he’s God.
In Exploding Kittens, the eternal conflict between Good and Evil gets a bit hiss-terical when both God and the Devil are sent to Earth in the bodies of chunky house cats. The adult animated comedy stars Tom Ellis (Lucifer)as Godcat and Sasheer Zamata (Home Economics) as Devilcat — both actors are notably playing against type … sort of. For Ellis, Lucifer and Godcat might have a surprising amount in common. “They both have a general disdain for humanity, which is quite fun to play,” Ellis tells Tudum.
Zamata says, “I usually play very righteous or on-the-right-side-of-history characters, and it’s fun to play the Devil and be a little baddie.”

I am not sure how many card or board games like Exploding Kittens have been made into feature films or television series. However, the idea is hardly objectionable, given the success of franchises like Jumanji, Pokemon, and last year’s hysterical Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. You have more hits and Battleship-sized misses.
However, Exploding Kittens is an idea that is a breath of dark, rank air. Executive-produced by great comedy writers such as Greg Daniels (The Office) and Mike Judge (Beavis and Butt-head), Exploding Kittens is the “what the f*ck” animated series we have been waiting for that reinvigorates the genre. I loved every hilarious, edgy, and subversive moment of it.
That does not even take into account how smart and savvy the series is by the season’s end.

Exploding Kittens is a unique adaptation of a tabletop card game, with Tom Ellis playing a lazy God turned cat to regain empathy for humanity. The show incorporates elements from the game, including cards like the cat mech suit and Devilcat turning into a sea monster, making for a fun translation of the source material. The show's worldbuilding is intriguing, but the story feels too safe, relying on a formulaic dysfunctional family narrative.
Netflix and Tom Ellis already proved to be a match made in Hell after the streamer saved Lucifer from cancellation, and while their latest effort with Exploding Kittens may not reach the same heights as the DC/Vertigo adaptation, it does continue the winning streak of this partnership. The show marks the rare first adaptation of a tabletop card game, as studios and creatives have typically adapted tabletop board games for the screen, ranging from Clue to Battleship and Ouija.

A holy war of epic proportions begins this summer with the arrival of Exploding Kittens. Netflix has confirmed the series will premiere in July with the release of a new trailer showing the chaos Godcat and Devilcat bring to Earth. Announced in 2022 as an adaptation of the hit card game created by Matthew Inman, Elan Lee, and Shane Small, the adult animated series stars Tom Ellis and Sasheer Zamata as the embodiments of good and evil who are sent to Earth in the form of tubby house cats. First, he was the Devil, and now he is God; Tom Ellis is truly having a journey spanning heaven and hell, as the Lucifer star appears as GodCat in the all-new animated series, Exploding Kittens. Billed as an adult animated series, Exploding Kittens follows the eternal conflict between good and evil where the God and Devil are sent to Earth (probably to fight it out once and for all or continue forever) in the form of big, furry, housecats. Netflix is launching an animated TV series and mobile game based on the quirky hit card game Exploding Kittens, the streaming giant announced on Monday.
Exploding Kittens – The Game, an exclusive version of the existing mobile game, will launch on Netflix in May, and will be followed by an adult comedy series in 2023. The voice cast for the animated series will include Tom Ellis, Abraham Lim, Lucy Liu, Ally Maki, Mark Proksch and Sasheer Zamata.
“The co-development of a game and animated series breaks new ground for Netflix,” said Mike Moon, Netflix head of adult animation, in a statement. “And we couldn’t think of a better game to build a universe around than Exploding Kittens, one of the most inventive, iconic and original games of this century!
