There’s a new sequel to the 1997 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it Here) and its 1998 follow-up I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (watch that one Here) coming our way from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge), aiming for a July 18 theatrical release – and today, we have gotten our hands on a poster for the film, along with a plot synopsis!
Robinson is directing the film from a screenplay by Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.), which has received some rewrites from Robinson and journalist Sam Lansky. McKendrick told Collider a while back that the new sequel will reckon with “some big ideas about hero and villain, right and wrong, how your skeletons come back to haunt you. The upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summerlegacy sequel will feature some of the original 1997 movie's core cast. However, franchise newcomer Jonah Hauer-King says the new installment will offer a lot more than nostalgia.
Speaking to Screen Rant at the 2025 South by Southwest film festival, Hauer-King hinted at what fans can expect from the film. "I have my final filming day on Monday," he said. "I did most of it in Sydney last year, and we had three weeks in LA. It's really fun. It's scary, I hope, and kind of hilarious. Some of the old faces are coming back - not old like age, just old from the previous movies - but they'll be back. There's more surprises, but I won't give anything away. Yeah, it's going to be great."
The currently untitled sequel is directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson from a script she co-wrote with Sam Lansky.

There’s a new sequel to the 1997 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it Here) and its 1998 follow-up I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (watch that one Here) coming our way from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) – and while Jennifer Love Hewitt, who played heroine Julie James in the first two films, and Freddie Prinze Jr., who was Julie’s boyfriend Ray Bronson in those films, are both back for this sequel, they are not the leads this time around. That doesn’t mean that fans aren’t eager to see their characters again anyway, and Robinson has taken to social media to tease the return of Julie James. Robinson shared an image that shows the character has received a piece of mail in the new film – and the handwriting on the envelope is reminiscent of the notes Julie was receiving from a hook-wielding killer nearly thirty years ago.

While the duo have finally been confirmed to be coming back, Freddie Prinze Jr. has some surprising insight about Julie and Ray's return in the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel. After moving away from a Mike Flanagan-helmed remake, development began on a direct sequel to the 1998 sequel with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson directing on a script she co-wrote with Sam Lansky, from a story she developed with Leah McKendrick. While plot details for the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel remain under wraps, we're now learning that the reboot will not focus on Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt's characters. The two will reprise their roles as Ray Bronson and Julie James from the original film and its 1998 sequel, but according to Prinze Jr., he and Hewiitt are "not the leads of the movie by any stretch of the imagination." Prinze Jr. recently appeared on Scale Talk Podcast with David Miniatures, where he discussed how co-writer and director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) integrated Julie and Ray into the upcoming movie.

If the sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer doesn’t bring Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) back, it can repeat the two biggest tricks of the Scream reboot movies to explain her absence. The trends of legacy sequels and reboots continue to gain force in the horror genre, and among the franchises seizing them is I Know What You Did Last Summer. After a disastrous standalone sequel in 2006 and a failed TV show in 2021, I Know What You Did Last Summer is coming back with a new movie in the same continuity as the first two movies.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot cast is coming together in a promising way. We just learned that Golden Globe Award nominee Billy Campbell has joined the cast in an undisclosed role. I wonder who he could be playing in the slasher.
Campbell joins a growing list of actors who have already been announced to be in the cast, such as Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King.
Freddie Prinze Jr. was announced recently to have officially joined the cast, reprising his role of Ray Bronson from the original film and its 1998 sequel. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Brandy Norwood are also in talks to return in their roles as Julie James and Karla Wilson.
Additionally, Bodies Bodies Bodies star Chase Sui Wonders is currently in discussions about joining the cast of the upcoming Sony movie. However, who she will be portraying in the film is unknown.

The slasher franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer is returning with a brand new legacy sequel next year, with Freddie Prinze Jr. confirmed to reprise his role from the original movies and Jennifer Love Hewitt in talks to return as well. One star of the 1997 slasher movie who won’t be back? Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Helen Shivers.
Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character was memorably butchered in I Know What You Did Last Summer, but it’s not like we haven’t seen previously dead characters return to life in the horror genre. The actress confirms in a new chat with People, however, that she won’t be back.

I Know What You Did Last Summer alum Sarah Michelle Gellar is squashing rumors that she will appear in the sequel and she has a good reason. I am dead, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress said, per Deadline. Gellars character, beauty queen Helen Shivers, faced a violent death in the 1997 teen-horror-slasher movie.
Gellar, however, will be tangentially connected to the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel via her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr. who is coming back for the sequel as Roy Bronson, the character he played in the original. In that film, the story follows four friends, played by Prinze Jr., Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Phillippe, who are being stalked by a man wielding a hook. The movie was loosely based on a 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is making it clear she won’t return to the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel film because her character is dead.
With a sequel to the slasher film in the works, many fans speculated if Gellar would reprise her role of beauty queen Helen Shivers.
“I am dead,” Gellar told People about the fate her character faced in the 1997 film.
However, Gellar’s husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., will reprise his role, and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum said she will be part of the film in an “unofficial” capacity.
“My best friend [Jennifer Kaytin Robinson] is directing it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is I am continuity,” Gellar told the publication. “So I’m always the one telling her, ‘Well, that would happen, or that wouldn’t happen with those characters,’ so I do have kind of an unofficial job title.

The ’90s movie franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer returns with a brand new legacy sequel in 2025, with director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson promising that the new movie will not be disregarding the events of ’98 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Does that mean Brandy could be making a return in next year’s legacy sequel? Last we heard, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were in negotiations to potentially star alongside a cast of fresh new faces, and it sounds like the door is open for Brandy’s return as well.
The singer and actress tells Et Online this week, “I’ve heard some things about it. So hopefully. I don’t know how [Karla] would come back. I haven’t thought about that yet. But I know that she should come back.

M.F.A. screenwriter Leah McKendrick recently wrote the initial screenplay for the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel that’s set to reach theatres on July 18, 2025. Her script for that project has since been rewritten by director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) and Time magazine’s Sam Lansky – and while the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel heads into production for Sony and Columbia Pictures, McKendrick has set up another horror project at Universal Pictures. She will be writing and directing an untitled monster movie for the studio, with James Wan’s company Atomic Monster producing.

The 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer will be canon in the upcoming legacy sequel. This revelation means that Brandy could reprise her role as the surviving character Karla. Brandy has already indicated a willingness to return to the horror genre with 2024's The Front Room.
The canon status of the new I Know What You Did Last Summer movie means that another major character can return. The original 1997 slasher movie, written by Scream's Kevin Williamson and based on the Lois Duncan young adult novel of the same name, became a massive hit, grossing $125.3 million against its $17 million budget. Because of this, it spawned a franchise that now includes 1998's I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, 2006's I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, and 2021's unrelated Prime Video series reboot of the same name.
