You could say Charlie Brooker is going back to basics with the seventh season of Black Mirror. After experimenting with things like interactive movie Bandersnatch and “Red Mirror” horror last season, the creator-writer of the hit Netflix series says he wanted to go back to the Black Mirror formula of sorts.

“Black Mirror” Season 7, Episode 2, titled “Běte Noire,” plays with reality to the point of madness.

The episode follows Maria (Siena Kelly), a confectionary prodigy whose professional success derails when Verity (Rosy McEwan) — a girl she knew in high school who was ruthlessly bullied — pops up and takes a research assistant position. From there things go downhill as Maria starts to get sure facts wrong left and right, and the person to constantly point out her mistakes is Verity.

Her former high school classmate seems to have a way to change realities and Maria is the only person aware of it happening. This begins to drive her mad and paranoid as she digs into Verity’s past.

Season 7 of Black Mirror dropped April 10 on Netflix after a two-year break. English showrunner Charlie Brooker wrote or cowrote all of the episodes, as usual. He's a five-time Emmy winner for writing and producing "San Junipero" in 2017, writing and producing "USS Callister" in 2018, and producing "Bandersnatch" in 2019. He received a sixth career Emmy nomination last year for writing "Joan Is Awful," but lost to Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer).

Speaking of "Bandersnatch" and "USS Callister," Season 7 marks the first time Black Mirror has revisited previous storylines in the form of cameo and a sequel, respectively. Will Poulter's computer programmer character Colin Ritman was featured in the interactive "Bandersnatch" and now returns with a small role in "Plaything." Meanwhile, "USS Callister: Into Infinity" is a full-on sequel to the original outer space installment, with Cristin Milioti and Jimmi Simpson reprising their crew members of the titular starship.

When Charlie Brooker's "Black Mirror" burst into the scene in 2011, it had a finger on the pulse of all things speculative fiction. Think the most thought-provoking, dystopian story bytes fitted into the anthology format, exploring everything from data privacy and consumerist identity to virtual realms of consciousness within a sci-fi setting. Even the most middling episodes were backed by a worthwhile vision, as every story underlined an essential truth. A dip in quality, however, was apparent by the time season 6 rolled around, which already stretched the premise to its limits. Season 7 seems to have followed in the footsteps of its predecessor, offering a mixed bag of disappointing tales that don't create a lasting impression. It is almost as if "Black Mirror" has lost its edge.

Having said that, the latest season does feature a handful of episodes that explore a solid premise.

The last foray into the surreal anthology was in 2023, which offered a mix of almost feature-length tales that felt a bit underwhelming compared to the legacy the series had built for itself. The seventh volume of Black Mirror debuts on Netflix today and is a return to the powerful storytelling we saw in the early years of the series. Bringing back spin-offs and continuations of beloved entries, this may be the most diverse mix of story tones and themes, all tied to the ongoing theme of technological horror that is just slightly askew from what could really happen.

There’s something off about Verity, who quickly embeds herself in Maria’s life by applying for and immediately landing a job as a research assistant at the company — a role Maria had no idea was even open.

Charlie Brooker’s dark satire anthology series “Black Mirror” is back for Season 7 with a new crop of conflicts.

“Black Mirror” will have six brand-new episodes, created by Brooker who also writes the series while working with a slate of directors. The episode descriptions have now been released ahead of the season premiere, which includes the buzzy sequel to the sci-fi adventure “USS Callister” titled “USS Callister: Into Infinity” and starring Cristin Milioti, Billy Magnussen, and Jimmi Simpson. The trio previously starred in the 2017 “USS Callister” episode with Jesse Plemons and Michaela Coel, which also featured the voice of Aaron Paul and an uncredited cameo by Kirsten Dunst.
