No one expected James Cameron to deliver a $2.3 billion blockbuster with an Avatar sequel that came a decade and a half after the first film. He did, and the expectations have been sky high for his next film in the franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash. During CinemaCon, Disney released the first footage from the film to the distributors.
Reports suggest that the released footage has created a buzz among the distributors with its seemingly dark storyline. Zoe Saldaña’s Neytiri and Sam Worthington’s Jake Scully appear in the footage as they face off against a threat even more dangerous than the human invaders.

Are you ready to go back to Pandora?
Disney screened the first footage from Avatar: Fire and Ash for exhibitors at CinemaCon on Thursday, introduced by James Cameron in a video segment. Cameron explained that he is in New Zealand finishing the film but was pleased to share a “glimpse at the increased emotional heart and soul.”
Cameron also teased that our heroes “face not only the human invaders but new adversaries, the Ash people.”
Avatar star Zoe Saldaña then took the stage to tease the film. “Fire and Ash expands the beautiful world of Pandora and introduces two new clans, the Wind Traders and the Ash People,” she explained.
The footage opens with Neytiri (Saldaña) telling Jake (Sam Worthington), “The strength of the ancestors is here.”
Later, after the pair deal with dangerous attacks involving plenty of fire, Jake implores Neytiri to let go of her hatred: “You cannot live like this.

The upcoming film The Life of Chuck (which Neon will be giving a theatrical release on June 6) is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. Neon has released a new poster of The Life of Chuck, which evokes a mysterious, but beautiful journey into an introspection of life.
Based on the short story from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, The Life of Chuck consists of three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.
Tom Hiddleston (Loki) is playing Chuck, with Mark Hamill (Star Wars) playing a character named Albie.

Avatar director James Cameron reveals that Jake Sully is partially based on himself. Released in 2009, the sci-fi fantasy film remains not just Cameron's most successful film ever, but the highest-grossing movie of all time. Avatar stars Sam Worthington in the lead role of Jake, a paraplegic marine dispatched on a mission to colonize the alien moon of Pandora who becomes torn between following orders and defending the people and culture he comes to love. Worthington returns as Jake to lead the cast of Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), Cameron's hit sequel.
During a recent interview with Empire magazine, Cameron recalls the writing process for the Avatar sequels. The director reveals that the franchise's characters were created and written by drawing from his own life, as well as the lives of his co-writers, Amanda Silver, Rick Jaffa, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. James Cameron revealed that his wife had a strong emotional response after watching Avatar: Fire and Ash for the first time. In an interview with Empire, the director said she watched an early cut of the film without having seen any prior footage and was deeply affected.
“My wife watched the whole thing from end to end. She had kept herself away from it, and I wasn’t showing her bits and pieces as we went along,” Cameron said. “She cried for four hours. She kept trying to compose herself so she could tell me specific reactions, and then she’d tear up and start crying again.”
He eventually had to pause the conversation. “Finally, I’m like, ‘Honey, I’ve got to go to bed. Sorry, we’ll talk about it some other time,’” he recalled.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third installment in Cameron’s Avatar series.

James Cameron has revealed that Avatar: Fire and Ash, the upcoming third installment in the Avatar franchise, will surpass the runtime of The Way of Water, which ran for three hours and 12 minutes. The director explained that an overflow of ideas during production led to the decision to shift part of the story to the next film.
“In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie two,” Cameron told Empire magazine. “The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren’t drilling down enough on character. So I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to split it.’” As a result, he confirmed, “movie three will actually be a little bit longer than movie two.”

Better make it a large popcorn, because James Cameron’s next “Avatar” film, “Fire and Ash,” will be even longer than 2022’s “The Way of Water,” which clocked in at three hours and 12 minutes.
In a recent sitdown with Empire, Cameron said he and his writers developed too much material for “The Way of Water,” and when production began, had to move some of the story from that movie into its sequel, “Fire and Ash.”

James Cameron's Avatar movies have proven to be extremely divisive, but no matter how you feel about him devoting such a huge chunk of his career to the series, seeing Pandora on the big screen remains quite the spectacle. From lush jungles to blue skies and, in 2022's The Way of Water, sweeping oceans, the planet is visually breathtaking.
However, when Avatar: Fire and Ash takes us to the home of the Mangkwan Clan (a.k.a. the Ash Clan), we'll explore the Ash Village, a location that's vastly different to what we've grown used to seeing in these movies.
That doesn't mean we're leaving Pandor's oceans behind, though, something that's evident from a newly revealed piece of concept art showing Lo'ak riding an ilu. Then again, perhaps this was to be expected.

We have a lot of huge movies heading our way this year, but 2025 will conclude with what's likely to be by far the biggest: James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash.
The threequel will once again explore new parts of Pandora as we move on from the ocean-loving Metkayina to instead focus on the considerably less friendly Ash Clan. Today, we have a first look at Oona Chaplin's Varang and the movie's "Wind Traders."
"Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She's hardened by that," Cameron tells Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com). The Life Of Chuck, based on Stephen King’s novel and directed by Mike Flanagan, is confirmed for a 2025 release.

Not only is this year’s race for Best Picture said to be one of the most open we’ve had for years, but The Life Of Chuck would win TIFF’s coveted People’s Choice Award, historically a strong indicator that a film would go on to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. Several stunning new concept art images tease the epic visuals to come in director James Camerons Avatar: Fire and Ash. The sequel will introduce several new Navi tribes, including an air tribe and a villainous fire tribe, with the new look at the highly anticipated sequel revealing some of what we can expect from Avatar 3 when it lands in theaters on December 19, 2025. You can check out the new images, which were released during this weekends D23 Brazil, below.
The concept art was done by Dylan Cole, Zachary Berger, and Steve Messing, and showcases the flying vehicles that will be used by the air tribe, a vibrant water scene, and our first look at where the volcano-dwelling "Ash People" clan live. This image also seemingly reveals that a character (possibly Stephen Langs Colonel Miles Quaritch) will find themselves being captured by the tribe, who have been confirmed as the main villains of the sequel.

James Cameron showed up at D23 Brazil (by video) earlier today to confirm that Avatar: Fire & Ash, the third instalment in the hit franchise, is now officially in post-production.
Five gorgeous pieces of concept art have since been released (via SFFGazette.com), offering a better idea of what to expect from the new corners of Pandora we'll explore in this next chapter of the filmmaker's epic sci-fi saga.
Cameron mentioned that the Ash People are a reflection of the worst side of N'avi, suggesting he pulled inspiration from the reality when he noted, "We have a lot of anger and a lot of rage in the world we live in right now."
The threequel's other newly introduced N'avi tribe will be nomadic and travel through the air; however, the Ash People "were destroyed by volcanic eruptions, so they resent nature and everything the forest Na'vi preach."

While Stephen King is a prolific horror author, not all of the writers upcoming adaptations belong to the genre he is most famous for. Stephen King is a horror legend. Ever since his 1974 debut novel Carrie hit the shelves, the author has been one of the most-read horror writers alive, but not all of Kings biggest hits have been horror novels. While The Shining and It prove that King is a great storyteller when it comes to spooky subjects, the epic fantasy of The Dark Tower series and the post-apocalyptic epic The Stand prove that there is more than frights in the writers back catalog.
This is reflected in Kings screen output too. While Hollywood rarely gets Stephen King adaptations right, some of the industrys best adaptations of his work are based on the authors non-horror output. 1994s The Shawshank Redemption is a masterpiece that is frequently listed among the best movies ever made,...

Mike Flanagan has been behind many successful projects, some of them adaptations of famous classic works like The Haunting of Hill House Netflix show or 2019's Doctor Sleep. A self-proclaimed Stephen King fan, the filmmaker tackled several projects based on King's work, the latest being The Life of Chuck, which he proudly calls his best work ever.
The Life of Chuck adapts the novella from the 2020 collection If It Bleeds, putting Tom Hiddleston in the spotlight as the titular character. The novella follows the eponymous character's life in reverse in three acts. Flanagan wrote and produced the film with Trevor Macy through their Intrepid Pictures banner, and is very proud of the result, and confirmed to Collider he thinks it's the best movie he's done.

The Life of Chuck director Mike Flanagan opened up about Stephen Kings involvement during the production of his upcoming film adaptation of Kings 2020 short story of the same name. This marks Flanagans third Stephen King movie, after directing the 2017 psychological thriller Geralds Game and 2019s The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep.
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Flanagan was asked about Kings behind-the-scenes involvement in The Life of Chuck movie. The Haunting of Hill House creator confirmed that he had a lot of conversations with King regarding "casting and other details" before the film went into production. However, during filming, King took a step back in order to give Flanagan the freedom to do what he wanted with the movie. "When we were doing The Life of Chuck, we talked a lot before production," Flanagan shared. "He has an enormous amount of approvals on things like casting and other details.

The Life of Chuck features a wide-ranging cast full of familiar faces. The project is an adaptation of the Stephen King novella published as part of the 2020 collection If It Bleeds, composed of the achronological stories "Thanks, Chuck," "Buskers," and "I Contain Multitudes." The movie was written and directed by Mike Flanagan, who has previously helmed the Stephen King movie adaptations Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep and has also acquired the rights to develop a television series based on The Dark Tower as of late 2022.

Mike Flanagan also didn't direct The Life of Chuck. Ahead of the movie's TIFF premiere, the filmmaker opened up about how author Stephen King almost prevented him from adapting his 2020 novella, which was published as part of the collection If It Bleeds.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, which debuted several first look images of The Life of Chuck, Flanagan explained how King usually "doesnt like to give the same filmmaker more than one thing, because it typically means one thing is not advancing at all." Since Flanagan had already acquired the rights to King's fantasy saga The Dark Tower with Trevor Macy, King was hesitant to let the filmmaker hop aboard another adaptation, out of fear that The Dark Tower would be put on the back burner. "He said, 'Well, lets focus on The Tower and Ill try to keep this one available for you for later,'" Flanagan recalled.

Following the title reveal of the third outing in the hugely successful Avatar franchise, director James Cameron has revealed some insight into what that subtitle, Fire and Ash, means for the movie. Discussing Avatar 3 with Rotten Tomatoes, Cameron has teased what the introduction of the new tribe, known as the Ash People, will mean for the world of Pandora and the continuing adventures of Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their family.
Well, if you think about 'what is fire?' Fire can represent hatred, violence, trauma, possible misuse of power. There's a lot of thematic stuff: What does ash represent? In my mind, in this film, it represents the aftermath of all of that energy, which is grief and having to live with what youve done.

Avatar, director James Cameron's 2009 sci-fi epic about blue aliens on the distant moon of Pandora, is the highest-grossing movie of all time, with nearly $3 billion earned at the box office. Its sequel, 2022's The Way of Water, is the third highest-grossing, with $2.3 billion to its name. You can bet Disney is going to want to milk this. There are three more sequels planned. Filmmaker Mike Flanagan has written some dark, disturbing endings in his career… but we shouldn’t expect to see much of that from him in the future. During a recent interview with actress Katee Sackhoff for the Sackhoff Show podcast, Flanagan explained why he’s done with bleak, hopeless endings.
Flanagan told Sackhoff (with thanks to Cbr for the transcription), “A lot of the stuff I was writing had really bleak endings and very hopeless endings. The upcoming film The Life of Chuck is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. We’ve previously heard cast member David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil) describe the film as a beautiful, heartfelt drama – and now Dastmalchian’s co-star Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy) has told Movieweb that The Life of Chuck is a beautiful masterpiece.

Guardians of the Galaxy vet Karen Gillan discussed what it was like reuniting with director Mike Flanagan in the film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Life of Chuck short story.
After a decade since first working together on 2013’s supernatural horror film Oculus, Gillan had finally set up her next project with Flanagan, after joining the cast of the upcoming The Life of Chuck movie last October 2023. During a recent interview with Collider, the Marvel actor opened up about her reunion with the horror filmmaker, whom she praises for being the same "brilliant" director she’s known him to be. "You know what, it didn’t feel that different. I was going into it like, 'Ok, how has he changed? He’s done so many movies.' [It] felt the same! We were back in Alabama like we’d never left," she said.

"What makes them come home?" "They love their home so much, they'll die trying to get back to it." That's a bit on the nose with this story. Paramount+ has revealed an official trailer for a movie titled Little Wing, a drama based on a true story about a moody young girl struggling with her parents and their divorce. It's set to premiere streaming on Paramount+ in March, skipping theaters entirely. The story follows 13-year-old Kaitlyn, who is dragged into the world of pigeon racing while she deals with her parents' divorce and the impending loss of her home. The film is based on Susan Orlean’s 2006 New Yorker article, and centers on a teen who tries to solve her mother's financial problems by stealing a rare bird, only to become unexpected friends with its owner, a man named Jaan. With only two films in James Cameron’s Avatar series since 2009, it is challenging to imagine the existence of five installments by 2031, let alone two more movies later. That’s right, folks. I said two more movies! According to James Cameron, he has ideas for Avatar 6 and Avatar 7, but there’s a twist. Instead of dedicating the remainder of his mortality to the effects-driven, money-printing franchise, he could pass the torch to another filmmaker.
Speaking with Collider about the Avatar franchise’s future, Cameron said, “We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point,” he said. “I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”
