It cannot be understated how huge "Baywatch" was. It was a goofy show with lightweight drama, resting somewhere on a matrix that incorporated soap operas, "Gilligan's Island"-like sitcoms, and 1970s "jiggle" shows like "Charlie's Angels." The central appeal of "Baywatch" was, of course, witnessing attractive people in swimsuits running dramatically down the beaches of Los Angeles. David Hasselhoff's star stayed high in the sky thanks to "Baywatch," and many of his co-stars -- notably Pamela Anderson -- became world-famous.
"Baywatch" debuted in 1989 and ran a powerful 241 episodes over 11 seasons, finally drawing to a close in 2001. The final two seasons were relocated to Hawai'i, and the title of the show was changed to "Baywatch: Hawaii," even though it retained the same cast and premise.
Weirdly, as soon as "Baywatch" ended, its cultural clout dried up. "Baywatch" was almost instantly seen as a curio of the 1990s, and 2000s audiences...

Before numerous live-action movies adapted the Garfield, Jon, and Odie characters to the big screen, the Garfield franchise existed primarily as a TV show and comic series. The crown jewel of the United Feature Syndicate stable of comics only rivaled by Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts the egotistical tabby was on the warpath in the '80s, branching out in all forms until he dominated every newspaper funny-page section, kid's heart, and car window in the English-speaking world. There remained one more obstacle to his unstoppable march to shove Snoopy and Charlie Brown into obscurity ... movies.

By 1973, singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson had starred in a handful of feature film roles, playing outlaw Billy the Kid in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, which also co-starred Bob Dylan. That same year, just after her 14th birthday, Marie Osmond, of the performing Osmond clan, launched her recording career, becoming the youngest female act to hit Number One on the country chart with her song “Paper Roses.”
Although their career (and, indeed, personal) trajectories couldn’t be more divergent, the paths of Kristofferson — who died Saturday at 88 — and Osmond, along with her teen-idol brother Donny,...

Jerry Fuller, the songwriter and producer whose stellar career included such hits as “Travelin’ Man” for Ricky Nelson, “Young Girl” for Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, “Show and Tell” for Al Wilson and “Little Green Apples” for O.C. Smith, has died. He was 85.
Fuller died Thursday at his home in Sherman Oaks of complications from lung cancer, publicist Bobbi Marcus told The Hollywood Reporter.
Fuller’s first production for Puckett was the million-selling “Woman, Woman,” which was released in 1967 and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. He then wrote and produced the band’s next three multimillion sellers, “Young Girl,” “Lady Willpower” and “Over You” — all top 10 songs, too — as the band outsold The Beatles in 1968.

An orange cat with a hunger for lasagna and a hatred of Mondays made a big impression with his first primetime special, Here Comes Garfield, more than four decades ago.
The lovably sarcastic feline, who returns to the big screen May 24 in Sony’s The Garfield Movie, was created by cartoonist Jim Davis.
Garfield’s self-titled comic strip — featuring the cat giving guff to owner Jon Arbuckle and blissfully oblivious canine nemesis Odie — landed national syndication in 1978, followed by his first book, 1980’s Garfield at Large, topping the New York Times best-seller list.
While working on Here Comes Garfield, Davis struggled to make the cat stand up and dance, but got some assistance from his hero, Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, who happened to be working in the same studio. “He started drawing over my drawing, saying, ‘The problem is, you’ve made Garfield’s feet too small,’ ” Davis once said in an interview.

Stony Island is a classic film directed by Andrew Davis that tells the story of two musicians who start a band in Chicago's South Side against all odds. The film celebrates the music scene in Chicago and pays tribute to the city's rich musical history, mentioning artists like Benny Goodman, Buddy Guy, and Chaka Khan. Stony Island received positive reviews from critics and was praised for capturing the spirit of the city with a refreshing cynicism, according to Roger Ebert.

Ron Haffkine, a Grammy-winning record producer and manager known for his work with Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, has died. He was 84.
Haffkine died Sunday at his home in Mexico after a brief bout with leukemia and kidney failure, his friend of 50 years, music executive Joel Diamond, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“Ron always had an uncanny knack of hearing a hit song in its rawest stage and the rare talent to couple it with the best musicians and then top it off with a meticulous performance by the artist,” Diamond noted.
Haffkine was instrumental in getting Dr. Hook signed by Clive Davis at Columbia Records in the 1970s, and the band led by Dennis Locorriere, George Cummings, the eyepatch-wearing Ray Sawyer and Billy Francis would compile a string of hits that included “Sylvia’s Mother,” “Cover of the Rolling Stone,” “Sharing the Night Together,” “When You’re in Love With a Beautiful Woman,...

Mable John, who recorded for Motown and Stax and later worked with Ray Charles, died Aug. 25 at her home in Los Angeles. Her nephew, Kevin John, confirmed the death, but did not give a cause. She was 91.

Alexander Hamilton, who died Jan. 28 at age 77, was a conductor and arranger who was able to add “movie star” to his credits in the last years of his life. His work on Aretha Franklin’s 1972 “Amazing Grace” album — certified as the bestselling album of her career — was heard by millions over a period of almost five decades before Franklin fans actually got to see as well as hear Hamilton’s handiwork as the arranger and conductor of that music. When the film rendering of that recording finally came out in 2018, Hamilton loomed as nearly as large a personality on-screen as its ostensible stars, James Cleveland and Franklin herself.
The producer of the “Amazing Grace” film, Alan Elliott, shares his memories of Hamilton with Variety.
Until the discovery of the film of “Amazing Grace,” the genius of the work of Alexander Hamilton was not as well known as it is now.

Sam Pollard, the Peabody winning director of “Mr. Soul!” and “Sammy Davis, Jr.: I Gotta Be Me,” has set another documentary feature called “The Sound of Philadelphia” about music icons Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Thom Bell and the musical genre they helped proliferate, Philly Soul.

“The Sound of Philadelphia,” a documentary on the 1970s “Philly Soul” sound and its masterminds Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and Thom Bell, is coming from Warner Music Entertainment, Warner Chappell Music, and Imagine Documentaries, in partnership with Jigsaw Productions, the companies announced on Wednesday. The lushly orchestrated but soulful sound — exemplified by songs like “Love Train” by the O’Jays, “If You Don’t Know Me Now” by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, “Me and Mrs. Jones” by Billy Paul, and “Tsop” by Mfsb and the Three Degrees – famously known for its use as the Soul Train theme song.dominated U.S. radio in the mid-1970s and influenced all of the R&b that has followed, perhaps most immediately with David Bowie’s “Young Americans” album, and most recently with Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak’s Soul Sonic.

The new documentary Julia Scotti: Funny That Way, begins with senior trans standup comedienne Julia Scotti reflecting on her 69 years and an arduous but ultimately fulfilling journey to embrace her female gender identity.
“Just a baby born male who never felt quite right,” Scotti observes, adding modestly, “It isn’t much to speak of, but it is my life.”
The film, by first-time director Susan Sandler, documents the path Scott took to a later-in-life resurgence of her comedy career, a flourishing that could only come through self-acceptance. The documentary, released by 1091 Pictures as Pride Month kicked off, is available on streaming platforms, including iTunes, Apple TV, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, Vimeo, and Vudu.
“Originally from Fairview, New Jersey, for the first 48 years she was better known as comedian Rick Scotti,” Julia writes on her website. “She toured the country, appearing at venues all over the United States and Canada,...

I’m just going to come right out and say this. I have a man crush on Craig Melvin, and I don’t care who knows it.
How can you not love this guy? He’s a young Southerner who was raised by a mom who was a teacher and a dad who worked shifts at the post office in South Carolina. I love that even though he is so young, he has made his success the old-fashioned way: through hard work, coming up through local news in South Carolina, winning Emmy Awards, becoming an honored anchorman. Then at the NBC station in Washington, D.C., he not only distinguished himself with his journalistic chops — he multitasked by meeting,...

Donald Trump was in Europe last week to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day when he decided it was the perfect time to lob an attack at Bette Midler. “Washed up psycho @BetteMidler was forced to apologize for a statement she attributed to me that turned out to be totally fabricated by her in order to make ‘your great president’ look really bad,” he wrote despite being a sitting U.S. president. “She got caught, just like the Fake News Media gets caught. It seems like Saturday Night Live wanted to take a break from Donald Trump fare in the cold open and decided to focus on the recent news of Joe Biden’s allegations of making women feel uncomfortable for being, well, too touchy-feely. This called for the return of SNL alum Jason Sudeikis as the former Vice President and possible 2020 presidential candidate.
Sudeikis came in guns blazing and with a receding hairline in full effect as Cecily Strong and Kenan Thompson portrayed aides who are trying to tone down his inappropriate habits of getting too close to people ahead of his potential presidential bid.
“I’m a hugger, I’m a kisser and I’m a little bit of a sniffer,” said Sudeikis as Biden. “The last thing I want to do is offend anyone!”
Enter Kate McKinnon as Gwen, a sensitivity consultant, who looks to help defuse Biden’s too-close-for-comfort ways.

Jason Sudeikis made a surprise appearance on the April 6 episode of “Saturday Night Live” as the late-night sketch comedy series kicked off with a cold open focusing on the recent allegations that former vice president Joe Biden inappropriately touched women at political events in the past.
Sudeikis previously portrayed Biden during his time as a cast member on the series and reprised his role by bursting through the door of his 2020 campaign headquarters, hugging both “SNL” cast members Cecily Strong and Kenan Thompson who were portraying members of his staff.
“If you’re really going to run in 2020, you have to change the way you interact with women,” Strong said.
Sudekis as Biden said that he was a “hugger, a kisser and a little bit of a sniffer.” But, he added, the last thing he wanted to do was offend anyone.

Remember 1995's Baywatch Nights? Oh, we 'member a whole pile of David Hasselhoff-starring strangeness...
This article originally appeared on Den of Geek UK.
For younger readers, the original Baywatch was an action drama that charted the professional and personal lives of county lifeguards in Los Angeles, saving people from drowning but also tackling other seaside perils like sharks, earthquakes and serial killers. The show was almost cancelled after its disappointing first season in 1989, but thanks to the efforts of producer and star David Hasselhoff, it was resuscitated for first-run syndication and found huge international success over the following ten seasons.
The conventional wisdom that brought us 2017's Baywatch film with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, along with so many other reboots, is that something is easier to market if it has already existed in some form than if it's entirely original, and that same logic has applied...

This article originally appeared on Den of Geek UK.
When we look back on Dwayne Johnson's breakthrough to the A-list in about ten years' time (“Did President Johnson get the film roles he deserved?”), we'll have to consider that his status as franchise viagra, as demonstrated in Baywatch, has led him to pick projects that are sort of beneath him.
Baywatch is the latest in a line of formerly popular TV shows to get an ironic Starsky & Hutch-style big screen reboot, following the enormous success of the Jump Street movies and the resounding failure of this year's ChiPS. With tongue firmly in cheek, Johnson has been promoting the film on his Instagram by referring to his new crew of lifeguards, including Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, and Kelly Rohrbach, as...

Cris Cab is proof that persistence, hard work, and a little bit of luck pay off. Six years ago, when he was 15, Cab met Pharrell Williams through mutual family friends. “This friend was nice enough to bring me into the studio.” Cab played Williams music he’d produced in his bedroom. “He gave me some great advice,” Cab recalls. He put what Williams taught him to good use and began recording again. A few years later, “Pharrell heard I was making music again and he brought me back into the studio and taught me about recording and writing and producing,” Cab says. “It’s all been amazing.” Indeed, while it may seem in the United States like Cab is an overnight sensation, his video for “Liar, Liar,” a song co-written and produced, by Williams, has already hit 30 million views on YouTube and the song landed on the iTunes top 10 in more than 30 countries.

Waylon Bacon says:
I’ve had three cats now, and each one was an accident. My first cat, Max, was given to me to hold onto until a friend got back from New Orleans. I’d just had my wisdom teeth yanked out, and bonded with him while doped up on Vicodin. Upon returning, my friend didn’t want the cat anymore, and I ended up with Max as a non-contributing roommate for the next four years. I now find myself with another two which came with my girlfriend. One of them is insane (she reminds me of Catherine Deneuve in Repulsion), but the other, Lou Rawls, is very chill, and often sits in my lap while I work on storyboards.
I am currently putting together my first Indiegogo campaign for a short film that has nothing to do with my cat, who currently would like his litter box cleaned.

It does not seem long ago when we were merely discussing the possibility of a “Veronica Mars” movie. Its Kickstarter campaign was the subject of much scrutiny and debate, but the TV show’s fans have spoken, and now we’re just one month away from the movie’s theatrical release. Co-written and directed by the show’s creator, Rob Thomas, the movie stars Kristen Bell, Krysten Ritter, Jason Dohring, Ryan Hansen, Francis Capra, Enrico Colantoni, Ken Marino, Martin Starr, and Gaby Hoffman. And if a “Veronica Mars” movie is simply not enough to appease you, then maybe its accompanying soundtrack will do the trick. The “Veronica Mars” motion picture soundtrack, as well as the original score, will get released on March 4th, thanks to WaterTower Music. The album features artists such as Zz Ward, Sufjan Stevens, and Lou Rawls. Meanwhile, the show’s theme song will also be in the album,...
