The grandeur of the One Piece narrative by Eiichiro Oda is something that has kept me hooked on the series since it initially started. From impressive character developments to brilliant plot twists, the One Piece storyline has it all, but one of the few complaints that I have with the series is that a lot of the developments within the series happen behind the scenes.

One of the biggest examples of this is all the major battles that have taken place in the story. From the God Valley Incident to Akainu vs Aokiji, Oda has to keep these thrilling action sequences out of the One Piece narrative, and he has a valid reason behind it. He once revealed that he has to pack most of the story into 17 pages, which results in a lot of the elements being left out.

Mel Novak, the great movie villain known for his slick turns as the sniper Stick in Bruce Lee’s Game of Death, the gangster Blue Eyes in Jim Kelly’s Black Belt Jones and the informant Tony Montoya in Chuck Norris’ An Eye for an Eye, has died. He was 90.

Novak died Wednesday of natural causes at a hospice facility in Granada Hills, his daughter Nikol Conant told The Hollywood Reporter.

In a career that spanned seven decades, the charismatic Novak did lots of his own stunts, as in The Ultimate Warrior (1975), starring Yul Brynner and Max von Sydow. That was one of the four films he made with Enter the Dragon director Robert Clouse.

His taking on a kung-fu-filled fantasy epic seemed like a stretch, and when people learned it would be shot in Mandarin, they naturally assumed it would maybe be a nice art-house hit but not much more. Instead, the film played to boffo box office both internationally and domestically, leading to an unexpected revival for the wuxia genre, paving the way for the successful domestic release of Zhang Yimou’s Hero and more. Variety now reports that the high-flying martial arts drama will hit the small screen in a new TV series that’s being developed at Amazon for Prime Video.

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is an absolute masterpiece that has been ruling the anime and manga industry for almost 30 years. While the anime involves third-party elements like animation studios and directors, the manga gets the first-hand essence of the mangaka and thus brings out the true spirit of what he trying to portray through the One Piece story.

Oda’s manga panels and his drawings are among the best in the business and have been appreciated on multiple fronts. But the last few artworks that Oda has illustrated in the One Piece manga might not have been his best work and I have come across a few people who just like me have found some inconsistencies in his drawings within the story.

However, the factors that may have essentially affected his drawing in One Piece make me unsure about my criticism of it.

When we think about top-tier fights in Shonen, Naruto being on the list is no overstatement. This is because of the impeccable and flawless battle choreography. There’s Naruto versus Sasuke, and then there’s Kakashi versus Obito; we asked for it, and Pierrot delivered it.

The moves, be they kicks and punches, are perfected to a T. We have to salute the animators behind this fluidity in motion and maneuvers. But there is an underrated fight that deserves a special mention for using a unique combat style.

Most specifically, the animator used Wing Chun in one of the fight scenes, which added an oomph factor to it. The scene is significant in most aspects as it racks up action elements, but also in the sense that it highlights Bruce Lee’s legacy and impact. How so? Let’s explore this.

The Lone Ranger isn't terrible popular among newer generations -- the spectacular failure of the 2013 "Lone Ranger" feature film cemented that notion -- but for many Baby Boomers, the character is a vital pop culture figure. For those who may need a refresher, The Lone Ranger is a masked vigilante who toured the Old West with his Indigenous American compatriot Tonto, writing wrongs on a freelance basis. He was previously a Texas Ranger (hence his moniker), rode a horse named Silver, and dispatched bad guys with specially made silver bullets.

This radio show was popular enough to warrant a "Lone Ranger" TV series, which is what really thrust the titular character into the pop culture zeitgeist as it ran for 221 episodes over nine years.

Our story kicks off with Special Agent Andrew Kang (D.Y. Sao), a U.S.-based operative with a serious love for solving problems with his fists or more accurately, his entire arsenal of martial arts skills. After a drug bust in Los Angeles uncovers a shipment laced with tragedy (five dead bodies stashed among the contraband), Kang worms his way into an undercover mission in Bangkok. His task? Impersonate a captured cartel operative, Benz Wu (Brian Le), and dismantle a ruthless Thai crime syndicate from the inside. The plot is straightforward in fact it’s almost skeletal, but that’s by design and really not an issue for me. The script knows its role: it’s a bullet point checklist that accommodates the real spectacle, the fights and it executes that role with flawless precision.

It can’t be denied that as far as martial arts movies go, the best ones come from Asia, particularly Hong Kong during their action heyday, which was arguably the 70s, 80s and first half of the ’90s. It’s tough to compete with the likes of the Shaw Brothers and the drunken master known as Jackie Chan. That said, martial arts movies were also making a foothold in the States decades ago, thanks mainly to Bruce Lee-mania following the release of Enter the Dragon. Before that movie, very few actors in Hollywood seemed like they were credible martial artists, except maybe James Coburn, a student of Lee’s, who pulled off some pretty good-looking moves in the otherwise silly Our Man Flint movies. Steve McQueen also had training but didn’t use martial arts on screen. Up to then, though, the most notable uses of martial arts in movies usually revolved around Judo,...

The History: The early nineties were the heyday of the martial arts movie star. Donnie Yen is returning to the world of “John Wick,” this time with some additional responsibilities.

The martial arts legend will star as Caine, the blind assassin from “John Wick: Chapter 4,” in a new spinoff film for Lionsgate. Yen will also direct the movie, which will begin production in Hong Kong later this year. The announcement was made as part of Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation.

In the mid-nineties, and in the face of Hong Kong’s 1997 handover to China, many of the biggest names from the scene found their way to America, and outside of Jackie Chan and John Woo, arguably the most successful transition was made by martial arts superstar Jet Li.

The ‘80s saw an explosion of martial arts movies that remain, to this day, milestones of cinema. Classics such as The Karate Kid and Bloodsport helped to popularize the genre in the tradition of Bruce Lee and his influence on action movies overall. Among the various underrated gems of the decade that paid tribute to Lee in a unique fashion was Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon.

After his time on The Green Hornet, Bruce Lee moved to Hong Kong, where he had developed a larger audience, and began starring in the kung fu movies he is best known for. Following the success of these films, Warner Bros. Entertainment produced Enter the Dragon alongside Golden Harvest, officially bringing the genre to Hollywood.

As per Tubi, Enter the Dragon is headed to the streaming service next week. The film will be available to stream on March 1, along with titles like Den of Thieves and The Equalizer. Enter the Dragon will be the third Bruce Lee movie to join Tubi’s expanding catalog.

The latest from Driveways and Fire Island director Andrew Ahn is The Wedding Banquet, which brings together Lily Gladstone, Bowen Yang, Kelly Marie Tran, Joan Chen, Han Gi-chan, and Youn Yuh-jung, with a script co-written with James Schamus, who co-wrote and produced the original 1993 rom-com. Following its Sundance premiere and ahead of Bleecker Street’s spring release on April 18, the first trailer has now arrived.

Jujutsu Kaisen might leave you with mixed feelings about the overall story that Gege Akutami told, but the one undeniably brilliant aspect was the action. The thrill of the fight and the smooth choreography kept us on our toes. In a world of sorcery, it relied on combat quite a lot.

One interesting fight involved the Strongest Sorcerer, Gojo Satoru, in close combat with Miguel Oduol. Formerly as a commander to Suguru Geto, he was loyal enough to go against the strongest to help his vision. That obviously didn’t end well for him but it landed him a different job.

What was curious about this fight wasn’t that Miguel fought Gojo on equal footing (almost) or that the strongest sorcerer went all out in a close combat situation. Gojo’s moves in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 perfectly mirrored a scene from a martial arts movie.
