When I first watched Geostorm (2017), I wasn’t expecting to care this much about satellites. But here we are—hooked on a movie where futuristic tech tries to control Earth’s weather, and of course, things go horribly wrong. It’s got action, a race-against-time plot, and that classic global disaster vibe. Directed by Dean Devlin and starring Gerard Butler, this film dives into the chaos that happens when science loses control. If you loved the tension, destruction, and the “we have to save the world” feel, here are some other movies like Geostorm that you might want to dive into next.
The Wandering Earth
This one totally reminded me of Geostorm because it’s all about Earth being in danger and humans scrambling to fix it. The stakes are insanely high—here, we’re not just dealing with storms, we’re literally moving the entire planet to avoid a dying sun.

Plot: U.S. President Danielle Sutton must defend her family, fellow leaders and the world when the G20 summit in Cape Town, South Africa is taken over by terrorists
Review: I grew up in the era of Arnold, Stallone, Jcvd, Bruce Willis, and, yes, Steven Seagal. Action movies of the 1980s and 1990s had a different flavor than today, but seeing an actor play the President of the United States and kicking terrorists or alien asses was always a fun and exploitative experience. It is impossible to avoid that surge of patriotism as Harrison Ford said, “Get off my plane,” or Bill Pullman declared, “Today we celebrate our Independence Day.” In recent years, Gerard Butler and Channing Tatum have played agents protecting the President and garnering their own action-hero status. Still, it will never replace Potus wielding a gun or beating the hell out of a bad guy. The Prime...

Few people have mastered the art of action movies as well as Gerard Butler, and one of his flicks from 2018 that was initially not well-received by critics is making the rounds on streaming seven years later. Butler stars opposite O’Shea Jackson Jr. in Den of Thieves, the heist thriller following an elite unit of the LA Country Sheriff’s Department who set out to stop the biggest bank heist in history on the Federal Reserve. Den of Thieves hit Netflix at the start of this month, and although it took a few days, the film has finally earned a spot in the top 10, sitting at #10 at the time of writing. The film also stars Pablo Schreiber and 50 Cent and earned scores of 41% from critics and 63% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Gerard Butler has had many successful projects, and his name is still drawing a lot of attention. Now, his critically panned disaster movie is getting new success on Netflix, despite not having the best reception when it was released in theaters.
2017's Geostorm was not a huge hit with the critics or viewers. However, the film, which continues the same trend of other disaster movies about the world ending, has a new chance at life thanks to streaming. Geostorm hit Netflix on April 1, and it has quickly become a hit on the platform, per Tudum.
For the week between March 31 and April 6,Geostorm debuted in fourth place on the global charts with 4.9 million views and 8.9 million hours viewed. The numbers aren't as high as other debuts, but it was still significant, considering that it only debuted in the United States.

It’s always been the case that new shows and movies arriving on Netflix can get a real boost in their first week or two. Some may take a while to make their mark, but others just storm in and pick up big viewing numbers immediately. That’s certainly the case for last week, with seven new entries across the two top five lists.
The latest lists from Tudum show the biggest changes are in the movie category. Four of the top five are new, and the other is in its second top-five week. It’s a mix of older films just reaching Netflix and some brand new content. However new, they are attracting plenty of viewers and interest.
Three new entries break into the top five shows. One of those could be a potential long-runner over several seasons with the right care and health checks. Of the two shows...

Viola Davis turns into an action star in G20, as Hollywood grapples with Bitcoin and cryptocurrency. Here’s our review.
I am the worst possible reviewer for a film like G20. I look at it, and fully appreciate that in the 1990s the script would have gone to Nicolas Cage. In the 2000s, to The Statham, and by the late 2010s, it’s Gerard Butler’s. I’d watch each version of those, obviously.
In 2025, G20 accepts the trade-off that Viola Davis (deservedly) gets the lead role, but it’ll be bypassing cinemas and instead be a heavily-backed streaming release instead. It’s not the ideal quid pro quo, but still: G20 is thoroughly enjoyable bollocks. The casting of Viola Davis is, of course, inspired. She could kill Liam Neeson in the Taken films with a mild glance, and I’d recommend exploring spin-off films where she takes down traditional action stars.

Viola Davis stars as a tough, actually decent US President foiling a terrorist plot in the forthcoming Prime Video thriller, G20. Here’s the trailer.
A new trailer has emerged for G20, the upcoming film from Amazon Studios. Here’s a quick synopsis that also folds Davis’ turn as an all-action US president into a much wider-legacy of films in the same gung-ho tradition:
US President Danielle Sutton must defend her family, fellow leaders and the world when the G20 summit in Cape Town, South Africa is taken over by terrorists.
‘President vs terrorists’ is by now its own action subgenre. From Harrison Ford’s stoic turn in Wolfgang Petersen’s Air Force One to Gerard Butler protecting Aaron Eckhart in Antoine Fuqua’s ‘Die Hard in the White House’ action film Olympus Has Fallen and, from the same year, Channing Tatum protecting Jamie Foxx in Roland Emmerich’s White House Down.

This summer, audiences return to Berk, but it's a different island than the one we're used to. Fifteen years after our first flight with Hiccup and Toothless, we return to the world of Vikings and dragons in live action in How to Train Your Dragon. As part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event for the upcoming slate of Summer movies for 2025, we are thrilled to exclusively unveil a brand-new image from the movie. One of the movie's returning stars from the beloved animated classic, Gerard Butler, couldn't hold back his pride, as he told Collider:
"It has been a huge piece of my heart to be part of this franchise. This time, instead of stepping into the recording booth, I stepped into Stoick's boots, strapped on his armor, put his helmet on my head and literally entered the world of Berk. I cannot wait for audiences around the world to...

Romantic movies are usually medicine for the weary soul. They make you laugh as you watch two typically very different people fall in love, whether immediately or eventually. The ending may even leave you with a warmhearted sigh as they kiss and live happily ever after. It's a formula that is loved by many and has led to the 14 greatest romance films of all time. However, not all love stories have happy endings. Sometimes you just need a good cry, and that's where the sad romance subgenre comes in. These are the movies that help you feel all the feels, and it's a journey that can be painful and therapeutic all at the same time.

The Rock is going through a bit of a weird time in his career. Ever since 2022's "Black Adam" underperformed and he pretended it didn't, the good will he'd accrued throughout several decades has been dissipating. The former WWE star, who recently returned to his wrestling roots, has seemed to flounder, and reports of disgusting on-set habits haven't helped in that regard. But "Red One," his Christmas movie for Amazon, seemed to do well and his aforementioned pro-wrestling return might go some way to restoring the public's faith in a man who at one time seemed to be one of the most-liked figures in Hollywood.
Long before any of this played out, however, and even before he became the massive movie star he eventually did, The Rock was starring in some middling action thrillers in his quest to conquer Hollywood. In recent years, we've seen some of these neglected entries in his filmography resurface,...

In an unpredictable twist, Gerard Butler’s Geostorm, the disaster movie that crashed and burned in 2017, had unexpectedly returned to the spotlight. The 2017 bomb had skyrocketed to the top of Netflix’s streaming charts in 2025. But what is the reason behind its failure? Why are viewers now flocking to it?
We don’t know the answer, but some behind-the-scenes details are leaving some hints. Dean Devlin, who directed Geostorm, has previously revealed surprising details about the troubled production. Despite the movie’s lackluster performance, Devlin is open about what went wrong and his original vision.

Gerard Butler might not be what you'd call an A-list star these days, but he's actually appeared in some solid stuff in recent years. The Scottish actor's '90s throwback "Plane" was a breath of fresh air in 2023, and /Film's Chris Evangelista dubbed 2025's "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera" a "triumph of dudes rock cinema." But none of this can erase the fact that Butler has starred in his fair share of duds, though if it's any consolation for him, the Netflix subscribers aren't letting something as bothersome as quality get in the way of streaming his films.
Back in 2017, Butler starred in "Geostorm," which on its surface was a generic disaster movie offering very little to entice audiences. But in reality it was even worse. The film was directed, co-written, and co-produced by "Independence Day" and "Godzilla" (1998) producer Dean Devlin, which you might think would work in its favor.

One of Gerard Butler’s most forgotten movies is stirring up a storm on Netflix nearly 10 years after being released. Butler stars alongside Andy Garcia and Ed Harris in Geostorm, the 2017 sci-fi/disaster thriller that tells the story of a team of scientists led by Jake Lawson (Butler) who race against the clock to save Earth from a dangerous geostorm that is capable of wiping out the entire planet. Geostorm recently made its streaming debut on Netflix to kick off April and has found major success on the platform, climbing to the #4 spot in the streamer’s top 10. Geostorm earned “rotten” scores of 18% from critics and 35% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but the film grossed over $220 million at the global box office, including $187 million in international markets.

Live-action remakes are the bane of creativity and originality and a sign of the slow decay of Hollywood. Sure, there have been a couple of good efforts over the years, led by creative people with actual visions who managed to create adaptations with something to say. For the most part, however, live-action remakes are the new video game adaptation curse, with the vast majority being not just unnecessary but outright despised by audiences and critics — even if they still pull some serious cash.
This brings me to "How to Train Your Dragon." The original animated movie is incredible, a beloved and critically acclaimed film that kickstarted one of the best trilogies of the past 20 years regardless of medium. When a live-action remake was announced, there was (understandably) plenty of skepticism, but also reason to be cautiously optimistic. This is the week we saw some big stars lose their place in the top five most-viewed movies and shows on Netflix. The lists on Tudum have been updated and confirm two new movie entries matched by three new shows. Those have ended the top five runs for both Robert De Niro in Zero Day and Kate Hudson’s Running Point.
The two new movies bring a documentary about a real scam and a Rom-Com to our screens. Both hit the top five in their first week of release. They sit alongside another true-life and actual footage film, and two movies that are a great mix of drama, action, and strong casting. That's helped those two retain their top-five slot, but how much longer?

Today at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Universal Pictures revealed the teaser trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and announced a live-action adaptation of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 2.
Opening in theaters on December 5, 2025, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 begins a blood-chilling new chapter of animatronic terror. Anyone can survive five nights. This time, there will be no second chances.
Based on Scott Cawthon’s blockbuster game series, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is directed by acclaimed returning filmmaker Emma Tammi. The first film opened to a record-shattering $80 million and went on to earn almost $300 million worldwide.
The film followed Mike, a troubled young man who reluctantly takes a job as a night security guard at an abandoned theme restaurant, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, hoping it will help him retain custody of his young sister. That fateful decision instead drags him into the black heart of a supernatural nightmare.

The live-action remake of the beloved animated outing How to Train Your Dragon soared into CinemaCon with a first screening. Written, produced and directed by Dean DeBlois, the filmmaker behind the original, animated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, the upcoming remake stars Mason Thames taking the lead as the dragon-loving Viking, Hiccup.
Following the exclusive look at the new movie, the first reactions on social media have been mostly blazing, but there are still some ready to throw water on the fire. The general feeling is that the new version of the movie is a worthy live-action remake, but lacks any kind of risk taking as it sticks very close to the original film. On X, Jeremy Kazieva gushed that the film is "The Best Live-action Film I’Ve Seen. This was literally just like the animated movie, so if you enjoyed that, you’ll Really love this too!

When How to Train Your Dragon director Dean DeBlois and stars Gerard Butler and Nico Parker took the stage on Wednesday morning at CinemaCon to debut the first-ever screening of the live-action remake, their microphones didn’t work. It was an inauspicious start for the trio, who gamely picked up their prewritten banter about the project and urged the room full of theater owners to consider playing the live-action remake on their biggest screens possible when it hits theaters nationwide on June 13. It was also the only bug of the event: How to Train Your Dragon left CinemaCon attendees thrilled, with multiple breaks for applause and reports of some viewers overcome with emotion during the movie’s climax.
Reviews are embargoed for the foreseeable future. However, the social media response was likely just what Universal had hoped to achieve with more than two months to go before its release.

The beloved How to Train Your Dragon story is coming to life in a brand-new way! Directed by Dean DeBlois, the man behind the original animated films, this live-action remake brings back the magic, adventure, and heart of the 2010 classic. Starring Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid, along with Gerard Butler returning as Stoick, the film promises to be a stunning and emotional experience.
Filmed in Northern Ireland, this is DreamWorks Animation’s first live-action movie, with the legendary John Powell returning to create the score. How to Train Your Dragon had its world premiere at CinemaCon on April 2, 2025, and will officially hit theaters on June 13, 2025.
Thanks to the early premiere, however, we have first social media reactions to the movie, and so far things look overwhelmingly positive:
The CinemaCon attendees love How to Train Your Dragon! They say it’s one of the best live-action remakes ever.

As we first reported on Toonado.com, Universal Pictures has released six new character posters for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie. While the movie's leads are featured, the spotlight is put squarely on the remake's main dragons.
Those are the Night Fury, Deadly Nadder, Monstrous Nightmare, Hideous Zippleback, Gruesome Gronckle, and Terrible Terror.
The approach to bringing these beloved fantasy creatures to life is certainly unique; while they're photorealistic, they've also kept the same cartoonish designs we first saw on screen a decade and a half ago. Had they all been given the House of the Dragon treatment, it just wouldn't have felt right (particularly in the case of Toothless).
We've heard a lot about How to Train Your Dragon essentially being a shot-for-shot remake of the DreamWorks Animation movie released in 2010. Talking about that earlier this year, Dean DeBlois - who directed both versions - addressed the complaints head-on.

Whether you’re in the mood for something brand-new or just want to rewatch a favorite, there’s actually a ton of good stuff streaming right now. From big-budget adventures to wild comedies to a couple you probably forgot how much you loved, here are my top 7 movies streaming on Netflix right now.

As much as fans of the How to Train Your Dragon feel this live-action remake is unnecessary, the original’s writer/director, Dean DeBlois, returns to the Viking world for this entry. “I decided to revisit How to Train Your Dragon because it felt like an amazing opportunity to not only direct a live-action movie but to be jumping back into a world that I frankly miss,” DeBlois says. “I miss these characters. I miss this world, and I love movies that have a really poignant message buried deep within a moving spectacle. Adventure, wonder. That’s what this movie really packs. It’s about a regular kid who gets to bond with a powerful animal and there is something that’s universally wish fufilling about that,” He added.

With only one year under her belt as Studiocanal’s executive managing director of TV series, M-k Kennedy, who joined from Netflix, is leveling up the scripted ambitions of the French pay TV group’s production arm.
After spearheading Studiocanal’s first in-house international series, “Paris Has Fallen” — which broke rating records on Canal+ and topped the charts on Amazon U.K. and Hulu in the U.S. — Kennedy reveals to Variety that the highly anticipated second season of the anthology, “Apollo Has Fallen,” has started filming. Rather than taking place in a single location, the eight-part series will hop from country to country, unfolding everywhere from the Libyan coast to the streets of Madrid, with principal photography taking place across the U.K., Marta and Spain. The series is produced by Studiocanal, Urban Myth Films, Millenium and G-Base, who were also behind “Paris Has Fallen,” which sold to more than 170 territories worldwide.

The shows and movies featured this week include raw emotion, gutsy thrillers, real-life drama, and quirky comic fun. Some exciting new movies and a top show are emerging as the most viewed lists for the past week on Tudum are updated, as the flow of new content to Netflix means there’s plenty of content you should be checking out.
There are three new entries on the movies list, including a tough-to-watch documentary film. The surprise elements, though, may be the two much-criticised movies that remain among the top five most viewed. Two of the new movies follow up on successful originals, which will have helped attract interest.
The top five shows list has fewer new entries. Two new ones are a bust-up in Belgium and a murder in a well-known Washington residence. Of the shows remaining, it’s a diverse list led by an astonishing drama making a big...

When Christian Gudegast's Den of Thieves hit theaters in 2018, it was met with mixed reviews. While some viewers praised the film's gritty action and Heat-inspired heist sequences, others criticized the film for its bloated runtime, generic and predictable plot, and underdeveloped characters. The result? A lukewarm 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fast-forward to exactly seven years later, and its sequel,Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, has debuted and also made its way onto streaming platforms. The sequel has managed to build upon the original, and, drawing on the positives of the first film, now boasts a more respectable 63% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera sees Gerard Butler's case-hardened detective, "Big Nick" O'Brien, pursue mastermind Donnie Wilson (O'Shea Jackson Jr.) across Europe. Rather than sticking to the first film's formula, which stayed local and saw Nick on the correct side of the law, Den of Thieves 2 takes...
