Anthropophagus, also known as The Grim Reaper, is a notorious Italian horror film directed by Joe D’Amato. The plot centres on a group of tourists who become stranded on a deserted island, only to discover that they are being hunted by a deranged, cannibalistic killer, played with ferocious intensity by George Eastman.
Anthropophagus is a film that has cemented its place in horror history not only for its content but also for the controversy it sparked. As a piece of cinema, it embodies the visceral, unflinching approach to horror that Italian filmmakers of the time were known for. A highlight of the first weekend of the 80th Venice International Film Festival was seeing Giorgio Armani appear on the catwalk, visibly excited, moved, smiling and proudly satisfied with his work. He then advanced graceful and happy, in his impeccable blue tuxedo holding hands with the model Agnese Zogla.
The moment was experienced by the more than 500 guests at Armani’s One Night Only event, where the world of cinema flocked to pay homage to King Giorgio, with guests including Sophia Loren, who has always been his beloved friend, accompanied by her son Edoardo Ponti, actor Benicio Del Toro, actress Jessica Chastain, and directors Ang Lee, Gabriele Salvatores and Giuseppe Tornatore.
The standing ovation lasted several minutes from an audience composed of numerous couples from the Italian film star system: from Sergio Castellitto and Margaret Mazzantini and Pierfrancesco Favino and Anna Ferzetti to Raul Bova and Rocio Munoz Morales to Kasia Smutniak and Domenico Procacci.

My own private tribute to Italy and friends in the business.
We were so lucky in the Berlinale that no one seems to have contracted Covid 19. But my heart goes out to those returning home to lockdown. During this time of Corona, backward looks are common along with thoughts of those we love and need to connect with. All that may serve a purpose in redirecting our paths toward more important and even urgent ends when we return to a new normal.
One of my backward looks goes to 2009 when I attended Rotterdam Film Festival…part of this festival included a workshop for four chosen upcoming film critics. I needed someone to help me write articles and asked the four if any could help me. Two responded to my request but only one followed up with me after Rotterdam. Gaetano Maiorino and I thus became acquainted; he wrote a book...

Emulating Almodóvar: Castellitto Employs Cruz To Pull Heartstrings
The renowned Italian actor turned middling director Sergio Castellitto returns to his place on both sides of the camera with Twice Born, this time playing the homebound husband in his second film to be based on a novel by his wife Margaret Mazzantini featuring his on screen Spanish muse Penélope Cruz as his tragic protagonist. Revisiting many of the same genealogical complications explored in their largely unsuccessful last collaboration, Don’t Move, which featured a grating troupe of unlikeable characters, his latest sees Castellitto rounding up an international cast that pulls hard at the heartstrings, diving deep into melodramatic territory while exploring the depths of maternity and what it means to be unequivocally in love. Thankfully, the film revels in overblown emotion while managing a twisty-turny narrative that plays flashbacks of mixed affection against a homecoming visit to a bygone comrade.

One thing that can be said about actor Emile Hirsch, whose career began at the age of 12, is that as he's grown older, he's been a lot more selective about the roles he plays. Despite appearing in a number of teen comedies, playing a big screen version of Speed Racer and giving a memorable turn in Sean Penn's Into the Wild , Hirsch certainly has been trying to transition into more adult roles while getting away from the double-edged sword of still looking younger than his actual age. Having premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, Twice Born pairs Hirsch with the gorgeous Oscar-winning actress Penelope Cruz, who in turn reunites with her Don't Move director, Sergio Castellitto, once again adapting a bestselling novel by his wife Margaret Mazzantini. In an adaptation of Margaret Mazzantini's bestseller, Penélope Cruz stars as an infertile woman who returns to relive her past in Sarajevo. Here she talks about babies, breastfeeding and pacifism
When Penélope Cruz was shooting Twice Born – in which she plays an unhappily infertile academic – she was still breastfeeding her own young son. For some scenes, her character shares the screen with a rolling cast of newborns, swapped once they grew too big.
"Some of these babies were only a week old. And so they were smelling me and that made them want to eat. But I was playing a woman who couldn't feed because she hadn't given birth! That created a very strange but alive dynamic between me and those babies. You cannot learn something like that. And this film is full of moments that could not be planned."
Cruz leans forward, black trousers tapering to huge nude stilettos.

As the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival kicks off tomorrow, expect a lot of buzz from the films playing at the fest as our own Alex Billington heads to Canada today. We've already seen trailers for films playing at the fest like The Sapphires and The Bay, and now a new trailer for Twice Born has arrived. Penelope Cruz plays a single mother brings her teenage son to Sarajevo, where his father (Emile Hirsch) died in the Bosnian conflict years ago. The titles are done in a way that tries to make them connected, but somehow makes them feel disjointed and distracts from some beautiful visuals. See for yourself below! Here's the first trailer for Sergio Castellitto's Twice Born originally from Yahoo: Twice Born directed by Sergio Castellitto who also wrote the film with Margaret Mazzantini. In the drama, Gemma (Penelope Cruz) visits Sarajevo with her son, Pietro. Sixteen years...

The first trailer for the drama Twice Born (aka Venuto al Mondo) has been released. Based on the novel of the same name by Margaret Mazzantini, the film stars Penelope Cruz as a single mother who returns with her teen son to present-day Sarajevo where her son’s father (Emile Hirsch) died during the Bosnian conflict of the 1990s. That plot isn’t exactly spelled out for us in this trailer, but damn does this movie look beautiful. Writer/director Sergio Castellitto appears to have put together one hell of an emotional film with some hauntingly gorgeous visuals. It’s tough to judge the performances from this dialogue-less trailer, but Twice Born is certainly one to keep on your radar. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Mira Fulran and Jane Birkin. Twice Born will premiere at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival, which runs from September 6 – 16th.

One of the Tiff premieres that doesn’t seem to be getting as much buzz as others is Twice Born, a romance-war drama that sees Penelope Cruz re-team with her Don’t Move director Sergio Castellitto, with Into the Wild and Speed Racer star Emile Hirsch coming along.
The first teaser trailer has arrived today, forgoing subtitles and just showing us some captivating imagery from the film that takes place in Sarajevo. The story is from Castellitto’s wife Margaret Mazzantini, who adapted her own novel and one can see the trailer below for the film also starring Jane Birkin, Adnan Haskovic, Pietro Castellitto, Saadet Aksoy and Luca De Filippo.
Synopsis:
Gemma leaves her comfortable apartment in Rome to visit Sarajevo with her son, Pietro. An exhibit commemorating the siege will include photographs by Pietro’s father, Diego.
Sixteen years earlier, Gemma escaped the war-torn city with Pietro while Diego remained behind and later died.

With a very strong leading duo in Emile Hirsch and Penelope Cruz, Sergio Castellitto’s Twice Born will be making its world debut at the Toronto International Film Festival this September, and is one of the most promising films heading to the festival, in a year full to the brim with expectation.
Following yesterday’s announcement, we’ve now got a new look at Hirsch and Cruz from the film, as well as some better quality versions of images that surfaced earlier this year.
“Actor-director Sergio Castellitto (Don’t Move) directs Penélope Cruz and Emile Hirsch in this vivid, full-throttle melodrama about an ill-starred romance set against the backdrop of the siege of Sarajevo.”
Castellitto is once more partnering with his wife, Margaret Mazzantini, co-writing the script together and adapting Mazzantini’s original novel.

After their collaboration nearly ten years ago on the romantic drama "Don't Move," it was revealed last year that Penelope Cruz and Italian actor-director Sergio Castellitto were set to reunite once again on a new project. As was the case with their first teaming, Cruz and Castellitto have turned to the helmer's wife, writer-actress Margaret Mazzantini, for inspiration with an adaptation her romantic war-drama "Venuto Al Mondo" that'll also feature Emile Hirsch, in a surprising piece of casting.
Little had been heard from the project since these announcements but now, thanks to Wild Bunch (via Ion Cinema), a host of images have been unveiled providing our first look at Cruz and Hirsch for the story of a woman who returns to Sarajevo with her son in tow and revisits the tumultuous past she shared with his late father. Bring on the cannibalism! A title not so simply called Antropophagus made its way to the “Video Nasty” list in the UK. In horror fans language, the video nasty list means it should be watched! This movie had controversy at the time due to how realistic the gore looks. It was released in the U.S. in 1981 under the Monterey Video title “The Grim Reaper”, though heavily edited. This movie has numerous alternate titles half of which make no sense. This movie is also known as “Zombie 6: The Grim Reaper”, which is misleading as this is not a zombie movie. Even the title “The Grim Reaper” makes no sense as the killer doesn’t take souls. If you can find the Monterey Video release, grab it fast as it is rare! If you can find this movie uncut, you are game!

No doubt Penelope Cruz is an actress that every director wants to work with her again – her collaboration with both Pedro Almodovar and Woody Allen confirms it.
Pe was honored for her roles in critically acclaimed Almodovar’s movies such as Broken Embraces and Volver, and playing in Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona she has achieved nothing less – she picked up a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. They got together again for the latest Allen’s Rome-set project, with working title The Wrong Picture.
And now it is another reunion to be! This time it’s the Italian director Sergio Castellitto. You know that guy, the two have had a successful collaboration on the romantic drama Don’t Move back in 2004.
