Last weekend, we celebrated 10 years of fears at the 10th annual Tampa Bay Screams horror convention. Our afternoon was spent at the Occ Roadhouse and Museum in Clearwater, Florida. Despite the rainy, chilly, weather the pavilion hosting the dealer’s dungeon, panel stage, and film festival was lively and attendees were in good spirits.
While last year’s convention showed the resilience of the Tampa Bay horror communities in the face of seemingly endless budget cuts, this year radiated a sense of confidence and air of “we aren’t going anywhere.” After the Tampa Bay area was hit with two devastating hurricanes in late 2024, events like this are more important than ever as they bolster relationships and support systems in the arts community.
Seeing the menagerie of subgenres and fans is always a treat at conventions like this. There is just as much enthusiasm for the high-concept, high-budget, classics as...

Yes, you read that title right, not The Exorcist but The Exorcists. And with a title like that could anyone else but The Asylum be responsible for it?

The Asylum's upcoming film, The Exorcists, is a "mockbuster" that cleverly incorporates the villain from the Hellraiser franchise, Doug Bradley. Other horror stars, such as Scream Queen Michelle Bauer, are joining the cast of The Exorcists, adding to the film's appeal. The Exorcists is set to be released on September 29 digitally and will also have a limited theatrical run in selected venues.
If only Doug Bradley could portray Pinhead in The Exorcists. The Asylum, which is the studio masterminds behind the Sharknado phenomenon, is at it again. However, this time their latest exploitation efforts, also known as a “mockbuster,” clearly focuses on The Exorcist (1973). And in a genius stroke of casting, The Asylum pits the villain of the Hellraiser franchise, Bradley, against the forces of evil. Check out the film's first trailer below:

The folks at The Asylum are the masters of the mockbuster – those being lower budget movies that are made and released around the same time as bigger budget studio movies with similar titles and concepts. Some of their previous films include Snakes on a Train, Transmorphers, Almighty Thor, Battle Star Wars, Top Gunner, Jurassic Domination, and The Little Mermaid. It’s pretty easy to figure out what each one of those was trying to cash in on. Now, with a new Exorcist sequel (The Exorcist: Believer) set to reach theatres on October 6th, The Asylum has announced that they will be releasing a movie called The Exorcists on September 29th – and a trailer for the film can be seen in the embed above!

As a fan, I cannot believe that Subspecies V: Bloodrise has finally arrived after twenty-five years. The movie was first promised only a few years after the release of Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm. I remember being a preteen on the Internet, on Full Moon’s original website, when the announcement of a new Subspecies, a prequel that would tell Radu’s origin down through the centuries, first hit. I hadn’t even seen any of the sequels yet, and I was still absolutely thrilled. Then nothing came of it. Full Moon became a smaller and smaller company, spending much of the early 2000s as Shadow Entertainment, the smallest scale era of the studio to date, before bouncing back by the end of the decade. But the budgets over time have still been much, much smaller than they had been in the ‘90s, when those first four Subspecies films were made. Given...

After Puppet Master, Subspecies is undoubtedly Full Moon’s most successful franchise. The two are similar in that they both have an intricate central mythology that is expanded upon over time, and while both have their share of quirky humor, the films are much more serious in tone than other notable Full Moon franchises like Gingerdead Man or Evil Bong. The two series, however, also have their share of stark differences. For one thing, the Puppet Master series has spawned 15 films to date: 13 official entries from the home studio, plus a crossover by the Sci-Fi Channel and a remake. They also play it fast and loose in terms of continuity. Many different screenwriters have come and gone, adding to and contradicting the established mythology—sometimes in equal doses.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema should offer a special brew spiked with drippings from the Bloodstone to celebrate their newest infernal partnership. After 25 years of dormancy, Full Moon Features is pulling the Sword of Laertes out from the chests of the vampires of Subspecies for a limited theatrical release of its newest open wound. And make no mistake about it, director Ted Nicolaou’s prequel Subspecies V: Bloodrise is a must-watch for Subspecies fans, and a should-see for horror fans in general.
Beginning with Subspecies (1991) and running through Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm (1998), this movie series remained unique, without having to veil its most overt influence—which is all the most classic portrayals of the legendary creature on film or page, particularly by way of eastern European castles. Writer/director Ted Nicolaou was really pumping out entries in the Full Moon vampire series Subspecies back in the ’90s. The first Subspecies was released in 1991, Bloodstone: Subspecies II in 1993, Bloodlust: Subspecies III in 1994, the Subspecies-adjacent film Vampire Journals in 1997, and Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm in 1998. And he was fully prepared to keep the series rolling. During an interview with Pop Horror, he confirmed that he originally wrote the screenplay for Subspecies V: Blood Rise – which will receive a one-night theatrical release in thirty to forty cities, courtesy of Alamo Drafthouse, on May 15th – more than twenty years ago!
Nicolaou told Pop Horror, “We basically thought that Subspecies the first one, back in 1990 actually when we were shooting around eight months after the (Romanian) revolution that toppled Ceaușescu, we thought it was a one-off film and that would be it. When the trailer for the long-awaited Full Moon production Subspecies V: Blood Rise arrived online last month, the expectation was that the movie would be available to watch on FullMoonFeatures.com by the end of February, and would then be available on Amazon Prime Video shortly after its debut. But plans have changed. During a new episode of his Full Moon Universe YouTube show, Full Moon founder Charles Band revealed that Subspecies V: Blood Rise will receive a theatrical release in thirty to forty cities, courtesy of Alamo Drafthouse, on May 15th. The theatrical screenings of Subspecies V: Blood Rise will be a one-night event, and Band is hoping to have a Full Moon representative at each theatre to do giveaways and sell merchandise. Full Moon will also be filming some kind of intro with director Ted Nicolaou and stars Anders Hove and Denice Duff to show before the movie begins.

Once a Full Moon production has completed filming, the company doesn’t waste any time getting that movie out into the world. Only five months have passed since we heard that the long-awaited Subspecies V: Blood Rise had finally started filming (more than twenty years after the release of the previous entry in the series), with franchise director Ted Nicolaou back at the helm. Now a trailer for Subspecies V: Blood Rise has arrived online, along with the announcement that the movie is set to exclusively premiere on FullMoonFeatures.com later this month! It will also be made available on Amazon Prime shortly after its debut.
Produced by Full Moon founder Charles Band and scripted by Nicolaou, Subspecies V: Blood Rise has the following synopsis: Stolen by crusaders on the night of his birth, he has no knowledge of his bloodline: his mother is a demon; his father is a vampire.

Recently, I attended the HorrorHound Weekend convention in Cincinnati, Oh which is one of many conventions that have popped up in recent years devoted to the horror and science fiction genre. This particular show had well over 30 celebrities in attendance with six of the Walking Dead stars and it was obvious that a bulk of the attendees came for that. With a sold out weekend where 30,000 tickets were capped off, lines that went on forever, and a convention center packed to capacity, it was obvious this was going to be a very special show and it was.
For those who have never been to one of these shows, you can expect to find a celebrity at a booth/table with a variety of pictures and props for sale. You will have to pay for an autograph and usually a free picture with said celebrity comes with it. The average is $20 per item signed.

A new Facebook page has launched for Jeff Broadstreet's Night of the Living Dead 3D: Re-Animation that's home to lots of eye candy both from the flick and behind-the-scenes. Some are even in 3D if you have some glasses handy! Dig it!
Night of the Living Dead 3D: Re-Animation stars Andrew Divoff and Jeffrey Combs. A prequel, the story begins one full day before the zombie outbreak occurs in the 2006 film. Also starring are Sarah Lieving (The Dunwich Horror), Robin Sydney (The Lost) and Denice Duff (Subspecies) as “Sister Sara”, a Sarah Palin-esque figure who unwittingly walks into the zombie outbreak and meets a fitting end. If only this were the real world! We don't think Palin could ever handle herself in a "squirmish" with the dead.

There is a place where Horror lovers can go and feel like they're part of something. A wonderfully twisted family. A place where, finally, they're not the outcasts with weird tastes and they're not the freaks for loving gore. The people outside these walls who don't have the stomach to see someone's eye plucked out of their head are the freaks here. That place is Creation Entertainment's Weekend Of Horrors.
This year's Mecca of Horror was at the Marriot at the Los Angeles Airport. All the little gore hounds flocked to multiple rooms of entertainment and spectacle like the Theater Room that featured many legendary Horror actors, actresses and filmmakers in discussion panels and Q&A's like the great John Carpenter, Tom Savini and Asia Argento as well as reunions of the cast and crew of such classic films as Demons and Nightmare on Elm Street.

Dig on the goods below, and look for the film in 2012.

Jeff Broadstreet, who had given us Night of the Living Dead 3D , is slapping you in the face again with Night of the Living Dead 3D: Re-Animation and we've got a teaser to share with you. After inheriting the family mortuary, a pyrophobic mortician (Andrew Divoff) accidentally exposes hundreds of uncremated bodies to toxic medical waste. As the corpses re-animate, the mortician.s inheritance-seeking younger brother (Jeffrey Combs) unexpectedly shows up, stumbling upon a full zombie outbreak! Incredibly tacky and just unneeded. Denice Duff also stars as a Sarah Palin clone named Sister Sara. Click on the player below for some "baby (doll) in the fridge" action.

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

Expecting a daughter via surrogate next month, The Young and the Restless star Michelle Stafford celebrated her baby shower with nearly 70 friends and family on Saturday at the home of Kirstie Alley.
With a theme of “fun, fantasy and fairies,” Michelle and pals Jenna Elfman, Marisol Nichols, Jennifer Aspen and Tracey Bergman gathered at the Tupperware-sponsored party for a traditional English tea, enjoying sandwiches from Chado, scones from Julienne, their choice of over a dozen teas and clotted cream, homemade by Michelle’s mother.
Recounting her “three-year journey through hell,” the two-time Emmy winner gifted those who had helped her most with a Tiffany & Co.
