The organisers of MidWest WeirdFest have this week announced the first programming wave for the 2025 edition of the long-running genre festival. The cinematic celebration of all things fantastic, frightening, paranormal, and just plain weird, now in its 9th year, takes place March 6th – 9th 2025 at the Micon Downtown Cinema in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Says festival founder and programming director Dean Bertram:

We’re just two months out from the year’s weirdest film festival, and everyone at MidWest WeirdFest is excited to share our first wave of feature programming for 2025. End Times follows a pair of mismatched travelers, Claire and Freddie (Bernadette and Stark), as they try to escape a deadly pandemic that has turned Los Angeles into a zombie-infested wasteland. Claire is a privileged young suburbanite ill-equipped to survive in this hostile new landscape, until she meets Freddie, a retired soldier who lost his daughter to the virus. Fantasy, sci-fi, and horror collide in Ryan Stevens Harris‘ Moon Garden, which Oscilloscope Laboratories will be releasing in theaters next month. While we wait, Bloody Disgusting has been provided with the film’s brand new official poster, which you’ll exclusively find below.

Bloody Disgusting can report that Moon Garden, which stars Haven Lee Harris, Augie Duke, Brionne Davis, and Maria Olsen, will be opening theatrically at New York City’s IFC Center on May 19th, with screenings on May 19th and 20th in 35mm!

Last month, Shudder served up one last genre gift during the holiday season in the form of Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge, a sequel to the 2020 breakout indie horror anthology. For the follow-up, the story picks up directly after its predecessor at the funeral for Rad Chad (Jeremy King), where those in attendance are forced to play a series of games in order to survive.

A few months ago, Deskpop Entertainment gave a digital and VOD release to director Harley Wallen’s “raw and violent” urban legend thriller Ash and Bone. Now Deadline reports that Deskpop has also picked up the worldwide distribution rights to Wallen’s vampire film Beneath Us All, which stars Sean Whalen and Yan Birch. Back in 1991, Whalen and Birch played Roach and The Stairmaster, respectively, in the Wes Craven film The People Under the Stairs (watch it Here). Deskpop hasn’t announced a release date for Beneath Us All yet, but they’re planning to send it out into the world sometime in “early 2023“. So they’ll need to move fast to reach that goal.

Scripted by Bret Miller, Beneath Us All centers on Julie, a foster child heading for her 18th birthday. She finds an item buried in the woods with something unspeakable inside.

Banijay Takes Full Control Of Beyond And Prepares For Rebrand

Banijay has taken full control of Mythbusters firm Beyond International and intends to rename and rebrand the Australian outfit as the “necessary integration process” kicks off. The circa-30M acquisition was first revealed in October last year, giving the acquisitive French powerhouse control of an 8,000-hour catalog including factual hits such as Highway Thru Hell, Heavy Rescue: 401, Massive Engineering Mistakes, Halifax: Retribution and Deadly Women. The move leaves distributor Banijay Rights, which shops the likes of MasterChef and Big Brother, with a circa-130,000 hour catalog. Today, Banijay took full control and a spokeswoman said the intention is that “[Beyond’s] distribution activities will fall under Banijay Rights’ name.” The acquisition was carried out via a Scheme Implementation Deed which, once implemented, means Beyond ceases to be publicly traded. Created by writer/director Aaron B. Koontz and writer Cameron Burns, the horror-comedy Scare Package was released on AMC Networks’ horror streaming platform Shudder in the summer of 2020. Scare Package is an anthology film that tells a series of blood-splattered, satirical horror stories from various directors, which are being recounted by Chad Buckley (Jeremy King), the owner of a video rental store called Rad Chad’s Horror Emporium. This week is not only the first week of winter, officially beginning on December 21st, but the week is also capped off by Christmas Day on Sunday, December 25th. As you might imagine, it’s not exactly going to be a big week for new movie releases, with James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water likely dominating any and all movie conversations these next several days.

And don’t forget that Tommy Wirkola’s Christmas genre movie Violent Night is also still playing in theaters through Christmas, the film thus far slaying its way to 55 million worldwide!

I’m going to be totally honest here and state that I did not see Marcel Walz’s Blind, of which this film – Pretty Boy – is a direct sequel. A direct sequel in early Friday the 13th style, where this film literally continues exactly after the events of the first movie (which are recapped somewhat in the opening titles) and continue what, I have no doubt, will be an extended series of films featuring our creepy masked-faced killer.

Er, “mask faced killer”, does that sound Just like the Friday the 13th franchise to you? I jest but it seems, given how much this film focuses on blood, guts and gore – much mores than the first (apparently) – that Walz’s is very much following that series footsteps...

One of more entertaining bits of indie horror from the last few years is “Blind,” a gloriously melodramatic suspense thriller that veers into slasher from director Marcel Walz and writer Joe Knetter, that slipped in amid all the chaos of the last half of 2020.

“Blind” focused on an actress (Sarah French) putting her life back together after being blinded in a botched laser eye surgery, but the hook was sex obsessed killer wearing a very Ken doll-esque mask called “Pretty Boy” (Jed Rowen). Filming just wrapped on the sequel, the eponymously titled “Pretty Boy,” and in advance of the first trailer you can enjoy some extremely cool first look images below.
