Kevin Spacey is set to be honored with a trophy for a voice role in the 2023 U.K. action thriller Control by the Folkestone Independent Film Awards on July 20.
On Monday, organizers of the British indie film awards confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the House of Cards star is set to win a best performance trophy for his role in Control. The British action thriller, written and directed by Gene Fallaize, did not have Spacey on screen, but rather the two-time Oscar winner instead had a voice role with a menacing presence in the film.
The British indie film awards event also touted Spacey’s performance and award on its Instagram and Facebook pages. The producers of Control cast Spacey in late 2022 as he awaited his London criminal trial over multiple counts of sexual assault. The British legal proceeding ended with the embattled Hollywood actor cleared of all charges.

Their hidden relationship leads to some serious consequences. You know how powerful people often think they can do whatever they want and get away with it, right? They sometimes don’t consider the feelings or lives of those who work under them. They might use people, extort them, and take advantage of their situations just because they hold power. This is exactly what happens in Control. The Prime Minister and the Home Secretary use their positions to get what they want without worrying about anyone else. But actions like these always have consequences. Their deeds don’t go unnoticed. Now, someone wants revenge. This person plans to make them pay for what they’ve done. After Kevin Spacey was found not guilty this summer over sex offenses, the two-time Oscar winner was ready for his comeback. But things aren’t going to be easy for Spacey, as the venue set to hold the world premiere of his next movie has bowed out, saying they only now found out he was in it — and it’s only his voice.
London’s Prince Charles Cinema has made it clear that Control, which features Kevin Spacey as The Voice (how the mighty have fallen…), is not welcome. In a letter sent from the theater’s owner, Greg Lynn, to Control’s producer, Lauren Metcalfe, Lynn wrote, “Last night it came to our attention that your film features Kevin Spacey, in particular his first film since the court case…My staff as well as I are horrified that we are being mentioned in the same breath as his new film for the premiere.

Kevin Spacey made a surprise appearance at an Oxford lecture honoring late conservative philosopher Roger Scruton on Monday night, performing for the first time since he was acquitted of sexual assault charges in London.
In a clip from the event titled “what Shakespeare can teach us about cancel culture,” The Spectator associate editor Douglas Murray invited Spacey on stage to perform a monologue from “Timon of Athens.”
“In an era of cancellation and defenestration we sometimes forget that we cannot go on like this and that we have been here before. We know this because our greatest writers and artists have addressed this question in their own times,” Murray said, referencing when Scruton was briefly dismissed from a government commission in 2019 over offensive remarks he made in an interview with the New Statesman.
“It’s about what happens when a society drops a person for no reason,” Murray told the Times about the particular scene.

The world premiere of “Control,” Kevin Spacey’s first film since he was acquitted of sexual assault, has dealt with a few setbacks after a London cinema dropped its offer to host due to the actor’s involvement in the micro-budget Welsh thriller.
The Prince Charles Cinema, an avid supporter of independent film located in Leicester Place, withdrew its offer to host the “Control” premiere after the theater was made aware of Spacey’s role in the movie.
The two-time Oscar winner, who was acquitted of sexual assault charges at a London trial back in July, recorded his part but does not appear on screen; his voice is heard in phone calls with Home Secretary Stella Simmons, played by Welsh actor Lauren Metcalfe.

Kevin Spacey’s attempted career comeback has suffered a blow, with a London cinema dropping its offer to host the premiere of his new film.
The Daily Mail newspaper reports that the Prince Charles Cinema, a big supporter of independent film from its location just off Leicester Square in the centre of London’s film district, withdrew its offer to host Welsh thriller Control, once it was made aware of Spacey’s involvement.
The double Oscar winner, who was acquitted of sexual assault charges at a London trial earlier this summer, is an unseen character in the film, with his voice heard in phone calls with the main character, played by Welsh actress Lauren Metcalfe.
The Daily Mail quotes an email from the cinema boss Greg Lynn, in which he wrote:
“We have an issue. It is with my apologies that I have to inform you that we have cancelled your hire with us.

Making the decision to hire Kevin Spacey for an upcoming film before his acquittal of sexual assault was worth the risk, according to his co-star and producer.
Lauren Metcalfe, who worked with the Oscar winner on the film Control – due for release in December – told the BBC that collaborating with Spacey was “an incredible experience.”
She said:
“He was cleared [in the US] at the time and we wanted to base it [the decision to hire him] on facts rather than to enter into cancel culture.
“We were really privileged that he signed on for the role and then working with him has been one of the highlights of my career.
“As a producer, on that side of things, we all discussed it all together at length, you know, pros and cons.
“I feel that everyone I met had their own opinion on what was happening and so it was a really tricky time to navigate through so much noise.

A few days ago, Cupsogue Pictures unveiled a trailer for the low budget thriller Control, which marks the first film to have Kevin Spacey in the cast since his sex offenses trial ended with the actor being found “not guilty of all nine charges related to sexual misconduct, including seven of sexual assault.” Spacey’s part is entirely vocal and he recorded his lines last December. Now it has been announced (via Variety) that Control has secured a release date. The film is set to be released in both the United States and the United Kingdom on December 15th.
Oddly, Variety also notes the movie doesn’t have a US distributor yet, so it’s not clear how it can already have a release date. But it’s said to be likely that sales agent TriCoast Worldwide will end up releasing it through their distribution arm, TriCoast Entertainment.

Days after a London jury acquitted him of sexual assault, Kevin Spacey is back in the public eye — or at least the public ear — in the trailer for a new movie, Control. He portrays “The Voice” in the clip, speaking to Great Britain’s home secretary (Bridgerton’s Lauren Metcalfe) as he remotely takes control of her car and terrorizes her for some supposed misdeeds she’s committed politically. The car, which also contains the prime minister’s daughter, hits a pedestrian and hurdles toward oncoming traffic.

A couple weeks ago, Kevin Spacey’s sex offenses trial ended with the actor being found “not guilty of all nine charges related to sexual misconduct, including seven of sexual assault.” So now Cupsogue Pictures has gone ahead and unveiled a trailer for the upcoming low budget thriller Control, which happens to have Spacey in the cast. You won’t see him in the trailer embedded above, but his voice is quite prominent. According to Variety, Spacey’s performance in the film is entirely vocal.
Spacey’s Control character is a menacing presence who manages to hijack a government official’s smart car in order to exact revenge.
The government official, Home Secretary Stella Simmons, is played by Lauren Metcalfe, who has previously had small roles on Bridgerton and the TV series version of War of the Worlds that starred Gabriel Bryne. Mark Hampton (Liaison) is also in the cast as Prime Minister David Addams.

“Control,” Kevin Spacey’s first project since he was acquitted of sexual assault in the U.K., has dropped its first trailer.
Spacey, who was found not guilty on all counts last month at Southwark Crown Court, can be heard but not seen in the upcoming thriller.
In the micro-budget film, which was directed by Gene Fallaize, Spacey plays a menacing presence who manages to hijack a government official’s smart car in order to exact revenge.
The actor recorded his part, which is entirely vocal, in London last December while awaiting trial. He was cleared of nine charges against four men by a jury in July.
After the verdict was delivered, Fallaize told Variety he was glad he had stuck by Spacey. “I don’t regret casting Kevin and I would do it all over again,” said Fallaize.

Gene Fallaize, the director behind Kevin Spacey's latest film, Control, says casting the actor while he was awaiting trial for sexual abuse a "risk worth taking." On Wednesday, Spacey was acquitted of sexual assault charges in a London court after a four-week trial. Last October, Spacey faced a Manhattan court for sexual battery charges stemming from a 1986 incident; he was found not liable. As allegations against Spacey, which date back to 2017, began to trickle in, the Academy Award winner's career began to suffer. Most notably, the actor was fired from House of Cards after reports alleging inappropriate behavior towards several young men on set.
Spacey now has a couple of projects in the works, including Fallaize's Control, an indie thriller also starring Lauren Metcalfe and Mark Hampton. Control follows British Home Secretary Stella Simmons as she drives home one night while engaging in an affair with the Prime Minister.
