Movie trailers have been an important part of film marketing for almost as long as there have been movies. They exist to give audiences just a tiny taste of the movie in order to get them wanting more, but over the years they've evolved to be more complicated, and that's not necessarily a good thing. Instead of just giving audiences a glimpse of the movie, trailers often give away the best moments, or worse yet, accidentally reveal spoilers that would work best as a surprise. Trailers have become so overladen that some movie fans have opted to avoid watching them at all out of an abundance of caution, which sounds like the opposite effect of what marketers want.

And then there's the full trailer for Danny Boyle's "28 Weeks Later," which is nearly two minutes long yet doesn't give anything away — in fact, it gives audiences more new questions than answers.

Don’t expect to learn more about the plot with the release of the new 28 Years Later trailer. There’s a lot going on visually, but it’s the trailer’s use of Rudyard Kipling’s “Boots” that elevates the horror onscreen.

The 28 Days Later sequel stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Ralph Fiennes. The original low-budget zombie film opened in theaters on June 27, 2003. The sequel will be released on June 20, 2025.

A new trailer has been revealed for 28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel to the zombie-horror films 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later.

With much more revealed now than the 2024 teaser offered, 28 Years Later will follow a group of survivors who inhabit a small island cut off from the mainland, where the Rage virus has taken hold for (you guessed it) 28 years. The trailer depicts Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his song Spike (Alfie Williams) as they journey to the mainland and attempt to survive in a Zombie-filled terrain. Like its prior teaser, the trailer once again features a haunting reading of the 1903 poem “Boots” by Rudyard Kipling.

The marketing folk over at Sony are cheeky monkeys. When I saw the email this morning announcing the new trailer for Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, I was greeted by the desiccated face of the man who, in the film’s first trailer, was mistakenly reported to be that of Cillian Murphy. Did Jim from 28 Days Later become infected by the Rage virus?

While the character is actually played by art dealer Angus Neill, as rumors continue to swirl that Murphy will make some kind of cameo in the film and Neill is glimpsed in the new trailer, it would seem that Sony is only too happy to capitalize on our blood-tinged nostalgia for the first film. Otherwise, the trailer largely focuses on star Aaron Taylor Johnson’s character and his son, played by Alfie Williams, leaving their island refuge on a mission that quickly goes south.

Sony Pictures unleashed a new look at Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” – the threequel to the director’s groundbreaking 2002 outbreak film – at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Monday night.

The franchise refresh picks up, well, 28 years after the terrifying Rage virus broke out across the globe (pandemics now being shorthand for worldwide audiences). Man has found a way to survive amongst the flesh-eating zombies, on a remote English island connected to the mainland. It’s guarded, obviously, within in an inch of all lives involved.

“I still love an apocalypse,” Boyle said from the stage. “I love killing the infected. I still love blowing shit up. That’s how my agent describes my best stuff.”

He wasn’t kidding. Boyle shared a full second trailer exclusively with the exhibitors, which significantly ratchets up the terror from a teaser shared earlier this year.

While 2024 was a great year, 2025 is going to be something as we will see the release of much-anticipated films like the Last Conjuring film and Guillermo del Toro‘s take on the classic novel Frankenstein. Presence is an upcoming supernatural horror thriller film directed by Steven Soderbergh from a screenplay by David Koepp. The upcoming film revolves around a family who move into a suburban neighborhood and soon believe their house is haunted. While the plot for Presence sounds like a typical horror film, the ultimate twist, aka hook for the upcoming Soderbergh film, is that the film is shot from the ghost’s perspective.

The highly awaited 28 Years Later won’t hit theaters until June, but we’re already getting hints about what’s next for the franchise. Ralph Fiennes and director Danny Boyle gave Empire some exciting details about Fiennes’ character, Dr. Kelson.

He’s not just a major player in the upcoming movie, but his role will grow even bigger in the sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which arrives in 2026 under the direction of Nia DaCosta.

Fiennes describes Dr. Kelson as a survivor with a unique take on the world: “He’s quite out-there in his views on the world. I think audiences will assume something about him and then see where it goes.”

28 Years Later 3's filming start window and director Danny Boyle's involvement has been revealed ahead of the new trilogy's launch. Written by Alex Garland and directed by Boyle, who were both behind the original 28 Days Later from 2002, the upcoming post-apocalyptic horror film follows an all-new group of survivors living on a small island community in the UK. Their story will be told across an entire trilogy, continuing in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta, which has already been shot.

Now, according to Empire, Boyle will be back to direct the third 28 Years Later. However, filming won't begin until after he's seen the responses to the first one.

Nearly two decades after the last entry in the 28 Days Later franchise premiered, big plans are ahead for the post-apocalyptic horror film series as 28 Years Later kicks off an intended trilogy. The film's director and writer tease "a whole different approach" as they share new details about the trio of films.

Speaking with Empire, 28 Years Later director and scribe Alex Garland hinted at what fans can expect from the upcoming trilogy, which kicks off when the titular film premieres this summer. Though ideas for the movie were ample, Boyle and Garland eventually crafted a version they wanted to make. “It was a wholly different approach,” Boyle said. “It was about what that 28 years gives you.”

There had never been a zombie film like 28 Days Later. Not least because its zombies technically weren’t zombies. Back in 2002, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland ripped up the undead rulebook – with hordes of flesh-eating former-humans that weren’t actually reanimated corpses, but infected with viral rage; who didn’t shuffle and shamble like Romero’s zombies, but legged it full-pelt; and who brought societal collapse not in the United States, but across the UK. Now, Boyle and Garland are back with 28 Years Later – evolving the apocalypse decades beyond the events of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, and kicking off an expansive new saga to boot. Non-zombies are, once again, all the rage.

After years of noodling around on possible ideas for where 28 could go next, Garland eventually came to Boyle with a version he wanted to make. “It was a wholly different approach,” Boyle tells Empire.

The 28 Years Later sequel receives an official title and release date, and it will hit theaters less than a year after the 2025 follow-up.

Sony on Monday, December 16 released the trailer for “28 Years Later,” the upcoming sequel in the franchise that reunites Boyle with screenwriter Alex Garland. The movie looks awesome — even if the corpse of Cillian Murphy has seen better days (check out the 1:48 mark in the trailer to see what we’re talking about).

But the real surprise was that “28 Days Later” is being rescued from that purgatory where it was stuck for so long. The film will be made available on digital rental and purchase via PVOD on Dec. 18 and is available for pre-order immediately.
