The new feature by Gabriel de Achim and Sebastian Mihailescu’ debut documentary feature are among the new projects being presented to sales agents and festival programmers in the Closed Screenings industry strand of the Transilvania International Film Festival this week.

De Achim’s Snowing Darkness, which is produced by Anca Puiu and Smaranda Zarnoiau of Bucharest-based Mandragora, centres on a film director living through the traumatic experience of the death of his young daughter.

The film centres on a director working on an autobiographical feature about the death of his daughter. Following Adalbert’s Dream (2011) and The Last Day (2016), Romanian director Gabriel Achim is currently in late post-production with his third feature, Snowing Darkness. The exclusively Romanian project is being produced by Anca Puiu through Mandragora and co-produced by Iadasarecasa. The screenplay, written by Achim and Cosmin Manolache, follows Teo (Bogdan Dumitrache), a director who is immersed in rehearsals for his new feature centring on the personal turmoil he has suffered, caused by the death of his daughter. As the main story unfolds, strange and unsettling frame stories arise, which teeter between fiction and real life. The more the performance tries to disguise real life, the more it is disrupted by life’s unpredictable course, prompting a series of ambiguous, unbearable and absurd events. Malmkrog

2019 has come and gone, but we’ve yet to see the latest project from Cristi Puiu, which was reportedly completed sometime ago (with a lengthy running time upwards of three hours). Malmkrog, which according to the film’s producer Anca Puiu, is filmed mostly in French. Puiu’s latest is inspired by and freely adapted from philosopher Vladimir Solovyov’s book War, Progress and the End of History: Three Conversations, Including a Short Story of the Anti-Christ. This is the same work which informed his 2013 project Three Exercises of Interpretation, which was a filmed workshop where Puiu did exactly as the title indicates.…...

Mihály Schwechtje’s Democracy Work In Progress wins €20,000 Eurimages co-production development award.

Fifteen projects from Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Hungary, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey were presented at the Transilvania Pitch Stop (Tps) at the Transilvania International Film Festival (Tiff) in Cluj-Napoca in Romania last week.

The €20,000 Eurimages co-production development award went to Hungarian filmmaker Mihály Schwechtje’s Democracy Work In Progress. The project had been developed at the Nipkow Programme in Berlin last year.

As we await the production of Romanian auteur Cristi Puiu’s Hora Staccato (which was announced as a project around the same time Sieranevada went into development and looks to be something we should see in 2020), it appears the director has gone ahead and filmed another project called Malmkrog, which according to the film’s producer Anca Puiu, is filmed mostly in French. Cannes Croisette regular Cristi Puiu has wrapped principal photography on his anticipated next film Manor House.

It is Puiu’s first film in French and is set in 1900 on the estate of a wealthy landowner. The guests spend the time luxuriously consuming rich meals and enjoying long conversations about death and the Antichrist, progress and morality.

The Oldenburg Film Festival, Germany's leading international indie fest, is again this year inviting producers and directors to a one-day co-production meet to pitch their latest projects.

The so-called Matchbox co-production lounge, which will run Sept. 16, will this year include a mix of industry veterans and newcomers to the indie scene. Seven more titles join co-production market.

The Sarajevo Film Festival (Aug 11-18) has finalised its selection for the 2017 CineLink Co-Production Market.

Joining seven previously announced titles are seven more feature projects, all of which are from Eastern Europe.

They include the latest feature from Georgian filmmaker George Ovashvili, whose 2014 film Corn Island won a Crystal Globe in Karlovy Vary and was shortlisted for an Academy Award. His project, The Pass, is being co-directed by Afghani director Siddiq Barmak, whose 2003 feature Osama premiered at Cannes and won a Golden Globe for best foreign language film.

Also attending the market with projects are Slovenian filmmaker Damjan Kozole, who won best director at Karlovy Vary in 2016 with Nightlife, and Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov, whose debut feature Avé premiered at Cannes in 2011 and whose latest film Light Thereafter premiered in Rotterdam this year.

Two of this year’s group have films playing at the festival.

The UK’s Chris Martin, Switzerland’s Ivan Madeo [pictured, left] and Poland’s Maria Blicharska [pictured, right] are among the 20 up-and-coming European producers to be selected for the 2017 edition of European Film Promotion’s (Efp) networking platform Producers On The Move, which takes place at Cannes Film Festival.

As in previous years, the five-day event (May 19-23) will include pitching sessions, one-to-one meetings, case studies and other meetings with the international industry gathered in Cannes.

Two of the producers from this year’s line-up have films in the festival’s programme: Poland’s Maria Blicharska will be presenting Frost in the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar, while France’s Didar Domehri was a co-producer on Argentinian director Santiago Mitre’s La Cordillera which will have its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section.

CineLink, the industry section of Sarajevo Film Festival (August 11-18), has revealed the first seven projects that will travel to this year’s co-production market.

The films are all in early stages of development and will participate in a preparatory workshop with the CineLink team ahead of being involved in the festival’s Industry Days, which run August 12-17 this year.

All seven of the projects come from the south-eastern European region and will form part of a 35-strong CineLink selection come August.

The initial crop include new films from the directors of Sundance 2014 premiere Viktoria, Locarno 2016 premiere All The Cities Of The North, and the first feature from the star of Dogtooth.

FilmFestival Cottbus co-pro event will feature ten projects this year.

Cottbus Connects, the east-west co-production market held at FilmFestival Cottbus in Germany, has revealed the ten projects that will be pitched at its next edition, November 10-11.

The projects participating this year include Berliner from Romanian producer Anca Puiu, producer and husband of Cristi Puiu, who produced 2016 Cannes competition title Sieranevada, which is Romania’s submission to this year’s Oscar race. The film will be directed by Marian Crisan, whose 2008 short Megatron (produced by Puiu) won a Palme d’Or for best short film.

Also being pitched this year will be The Return, from BAFTA-winning Ida producer Piotr Dzięcioł. The film will be directed by Krzysztof Rzączyński and also produced by Maciej Rzączyński.

The Best Pitch Award comes with a $1,700 (€1,500) prize and accreditation to the Cannes Producer Network in 2017. Also up for grabs is the Post Pitch Award, which comes with $28,000 (€25,000) and is designated by a jury...

European Film Promotion (Efp) has selected 20 emerging European producers for the 17th edition of its Producers on the Move networking initiative, which will be held during the Cannes Film Festival between May 14-17.

The participating producers will take part in a programme of round-table project presentations, one-on-one speed dating pitches and case studies of successful projects.

The 2016 selection includes the UK’s Lucas Ochoa, producer on Andrea Arnold’s Cannes competition entry American Honey. Ochoa has had winning films at the Sundance Film Festival for four years in a row including Robert Egger’s multi-award winning The Witch and this year’s Michal Marczak documentary All These Sleepless Night.

Romanian New Wave master Cristi Puiu, has been almost absent from the cinema scene, whose memorable sophomore effort, 2005’s The Death of Mr. Lazarescu won the Un Certain Regard award and became one of the signature titles of that film movement. His less celebrated but equally assured follow-up was 2010’s incredibly bleak Aurora. Since then, he quietly unleashed a terrific 2013 feature Three Exercises of Interpretation, which was one of the best films we saw that year, but it sadly is still without distribution. At the tail end of 2013, Puiu announced two projects in development, the first being Sierra-Nevada. The project received funding from Eurimages and completed filming in March of 2015. The film concerns “a commemoration that never gets to take place,” as Puiu describes it, and its characters escape into fiction when overwhelmed by a grief they cannot understand. Inspired by Aurel Rau’s poem The Agathirsoi.

Cristi Puiu has reteamed with his The Death of Mr. Lazarescu actor Mimi Brănescu on the filmmaker’s fifth feature film currently filming in Bucharest until sometime in March. Filmneweurope reports that the film, repped by the Wild Bunch folks, is targeting a 2016 release. So definitely no Cannes this year. Central and Eastern European filmmakers presented 14 projects at various stages of production at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival’s annual Works in Progress initiative.

The popular industry programme at Kviff is in its tenth year, and past films shown as Works in Progress include Levan Koguashvili’s Blind Dates, Yannis Veslemes’s Norway and Darko Lungulov’s Monument to Michael Jackson, all of which play at this year’s festival.

This year’s selection included a number of standout pitches to the assembled international sales agents, distributors, co-producers and festival programmers.

Red Spider is the story of a teenage serial killer in 1960s Communist Poland. It marks the feature debut of Marcin Koszalka, best known for directing HBO documentaries.

We might be haphazardly reaping the benefits of Cristi Puiu and Cristian Mungiu shooting in opposite years, and for that we are thankful. It would appear we’ve got another two decades worth of annual films coming our way form both Romanian masterworkers, and contrary to what we might have believed earlier in the year, development on The Manor House was set aside for Sierra-Nevada instead. Would this make it three for three when we include his experimental ‘Three Exercises of Interpretation project.

European Film Promotion has special programs highlighting talent in Berlin (Shooting Stars), a Producer Lab in Toronto, 10 Directors to Watch at Karlovy Vary, European Directors at Busan and a great networking party at Afm. For 14 years Efp has hosted Producers on the Move in Cannes. This year 29 producers from 29 different European countries will take part in the event from 18 to 21 May, 2013. The Republic of Kosovo* and Montenegro will both be represented for the first time this year with a producer. These are the producers who set the ball rolling on projects, forge coalitions and conjure up a film out of an idea. Film producers are increasingly looking past their national borders. In order to facilitate an exchange with similarly ambitious colleagues from other European countries and showcase their range of achievements, European Film Promotion (Efp) offers a platform for networking to carefully selected producers. 12 of the 29 producers are women ♀.

Looking back at the 2012 edition of Producers on the Move, almost all of the producers are still in contact with one another to follow up on ideas. 17 from last year's 25 participants (68%) are already working on 15 co-productions.

The group of former participants includes such internationally known and award-winning producers as Ada Solomon from Romania (Child's Pose), Bettina Brokemper from Germany (Bal), Louise Vesth from Denmark (Melancholia) and Siniša Juričić from Croatia (Sofia’s Last Ambulance).

Scheduled during the Cannes International Film Festival, the program provides its participants with an additional visibility they get at this melting pot for filmmakers, sales agents, financiers and the international media. Producers On The Move's schedule with pitching sessions, one-on-one speed-dating meetings and various opportunities to build up business relationships and to exchange knowledge enables the selected filmmakers to return home with advanced film projects and, sometimes, with a co-production deal. At the Producers' Lunch, they can, moreover, get in contact with participants from previous years.

The participants have already realized joint European film projects which were noticed on the international radar, but they still are on their way to becoming international players. Many of them produced feature films as well as documentaries, and some are additionally active in the field of animation films.

For the fourth time, Efp will be cooperating for Producers On The Move with the pan-European co-production fund Eurimages.

If all goes well with the production look for this to make the deadline for next year's Cannes edition.
