The Twilight Zone is one of the most brilliant and trippy series ever made. Created by Rod Serling, the CBS series is a virtual and psychologically thrilling trip into the unknown. The Twilight Zone premiered over six decades ago, and it still holds up very well as far as the stories and the visual experience go. Maybe that’s why the Jordan Peele reboot failed: it couldn’t capture the same magic as the Serling series did. So, if you loved the trippy stories, inventive settings, and compelling characters in The Twilight Zone, here are some similar shows you should check out next.

Perception is everything. Filmmakers often toy with reality by unscrewing the story from the unreliable narrator’s vantage point. In filtering events through a distorted lens, incrementally unraveling the truth, writers and directors keep the viewer tip-toeing through a battlefield littered with dynamite. Darren Aronofsky’s mother! and Mitzi Peirone’s Braid shift reality like tectonic plates. Both are illusory, fever dreams that don’t even seem real. The filmmakers test our mental capacity and push our patience for such absurdism to the absolute limits.
Audiences raked mother! over the coals upon release. A cult classic in many ways, the 2017 horror mystery plunges into allegorical territory, asking the audience to glance deeper into its storytelling elements and below its superficial layers. Twists of fate are par for the course in Unidentified Objects, both on and off the screen. The new road trip film from director Juan Felipe Zuleta tracks the unlikely friendship of a gay dwarf (Matthew Jeffers) who agrees to go on a road trip with his bubbly, alien-obsessed neighbor (Sarah Hay). The mission: To find an alien visitation site Winona (Hay) claims to be the spot of her first alien encounter when she was a teen. Cranky Peter (Jeffers) isn’t so sure.
Surprisingly, Jeffers almost wasn’t in this film. He received an email from his agent saying that there was this small indie film he could audition for. It was in the height of the pandemic and, “I was living at my boss' loft in Soho, and very detached from the creative space,” the actor explained. “My grandfather was passing away and I felt very deeply disconnected from my creative muscle.

A gay dwarf and an alien-obsessed street worker go on a road trip and… Let’s stop right there. Unidentified Objects will surely capture your attention for that inventive premise, but chances are you’ll be more moved by how this sparkling indie film manages to create a compelling narrative with two characters audiences don’t often see on the big screen.
Director Juan Felipe Zuleta co-wrote this amusing and often deeply emotional film with Leland Frankel, and the duo were showered in praise during their film fest run. There is a vast array of Lgbtqi films and TV series to experience during Pride month, and Unidentified Objects should sit high on the must-see list. Not because it features gay characters but because it explores universal themes that unite us. Director Juan Felipe Zuleta saw that and creates a winning tale about two characters we can understand and root for.
Here’s to that. So… what can possibly go wrong when an uptight dwarf and his woo-woo, alien-obsessed neighbor road trip it to Canada in an offbeat attempt to search for their place in the universe? Plenty, and that’s what makes Zuleta’s indie outing so enjoyable to watch. The man is also on board as co-screenwriter with Leland Frankel. Together they weave a compelling, often funny tale about an unlikely friendship and enduring existential angst. Juan Felipe Zuleta, who’s experienced a great run at film fests with the movie,...

"I promise that this will all make a lot more sense when I can show you..." Quiver Distr. has released the first official trailer for an indie comedy called Unidentified Objects, marking the feature directorial debut of NYC-based filmmaker Juan Felipe Zuleta. This first premiered at the 2022 Inside Out Film Festival last year, and also played at Outfest LA, Fantastic Fest, NewFest - with a release set for June this summer. An uptight dwarf and his free-spirited, alien-obsessed neighbor hit the road on a border-defying search (up into Canada) for their place in the universe. On their increasingly-surreal odyssey, Peter & Winona encounter bickering lesbian cosplayers, shroom-addled survivalists, and even extraterrestrial highway cops. Starring Golden Globe nom Sarah Hay as Winona, and Matthew August Jeffers as Peter, along with Roberta Colindrez, Tara Pacheco, and Kerry Flanagan. This looks like some quirky, funky indie entertainment. // Continue Reading ›...

The truth will always find its way to the light, even if through shady methods, as is the case in Confession. The thriller centers on an ambitious district attorney who delves into a case of a woman accusing multiple men of sexual assault, only to fall down a rabbit hole of previous victims and murders.
Clark Backo leads the cast of Confession alongside Sarah Hay, Nolan Gerard Funk, Sterling Beaumon, Michael Ironside, and Rob Giumarra. The film deftly balances a harrowing thriller with a timely exploration of sexual assault and law enforcement's response, or lack thereof.

As Dayna Hanson’s crime drama opens, we’re driving along a tree-lined road at night. There’s a light coating of snow snow on the ground and the absence of tracks speaks to the isolation, the loneliness of this place. It’s a fitting introduction to the sort of small northern town where, most of the time, nothing much happens, but when it does, it’s all too easy to get away with.
We will return to that road, and to the bridge it leads onto, at a later point. In the meantime, we cut away to a party, a large house full of drunken young people drinking and dancing and fooling around. Rich boy Randall (Sterling Beaumon), whose parents own the place, is making an idiot of himself in an attempt to command everyone’s attention, but the one who attracts the camera’s gaze is Alicia (Sarah Hay...

In 2012, Kier-La Janisse published House of Psychotic Women and forever changed the landscape of film analysis. Subtitled An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis, the book is an exhaustive look at films from all genres, each featuring one or more female characters with some degree of mental instability. House of Psychotic Women is split into two sections: memoir and appendix. Janisse begins by examining significant moments in her own life, confronting generational trauma, a troubled childhood, her teenage years as a juvenile delinquent, and her journey to festival programming through the lens of narrative film. Each stage of her life is paired with at least one movie in which she seeks to understand her own experiences by comparing them with a character facing a similar issue. Janisse’s vulnerable and unflinchingly honest writing invites the reader into her psyche while inspiring a deeper look into our own lives.

By a strange twist of scheduling, the first couple of films from Fantastic Fest, Unidentified Objects and Everyone Will Burn, have something in common, they both have main characters who have dwarfism. It’s the kind of coincidence that, while meaningless in the real world, would probably mean something significant in the strange world where Unidentified Objects takes place.
Along with being a dwarf, Peter is gay and currently unemployed. He’s also tired of his treatment for being different and tends to avoid people. That doesn’t stop Winona from knocking on his door asking for a favour, a ride to Canada. It seems the aliens who abducted her when she was fifteen are coming back for her and she needs to meet them. Matthew Jeffers and Sarah Hay in Unidentified Objects
The story of an introverted gay little person talked into going on a road trip by his neighbour, who is hoping to meet up with the aliens she believes abducted her years previously, Unidentified Objects is one of those little indie gems which, too often, one needs luck to discover. It’s screening as part of this year’s Inside Out festival in Toronto, and stars Matthew Jeffers and Sarah Hay, together with director Juan Felipe Zuleta, were enthusiastic about meeting to discuss it. Their easy chemistry and passion for the project shone out of them, and Sarah began the conversation by telling me how she came on board.

I first saw Braid (aka Dying to Play) at the North Bend Film Festival in 2018. I immediately loved it. The colors, the story, the bizarreness of it all was right up my alley. But there was something else about it that really struck me. It was something I couldn’t quite define, but it made me comfortable. I felt safe with it, in a strange way.
It was only later when I saw Greta Gerwig’s phenomenal adaptation of Little Women that I made the connection and figured it out. The March sisters create a space where they can be completely themselves. They are loud and boisterous and free from societal constraints. It’s a space where they can simply exist. And it is Theirs.
In her film, Mitzi Peirone creates a similar space for her trio of characters. Sure, it’s a little more violent and murderous than the March house,...

Moira Walley-Beckett's Flesh and Bone mini-series isn't just for ballet enthusiasts because its themes run much deeper than the elegant sport. Writer and director Ryan Spindell (Kirksdale) delivers to us a new entry into the world of anthology-based horror with The Mortuary Collection. The film takes a funeral home as its central location, a proven setting in the world of horror films.
The film, in my mind, immediately harkened back to such anthology delights as Tales from the Crypt, with Clancy Brown delivering a wonderfully energised performance as Montgomery Dark, the mortician. He’s a hoot in the role and it really pulls the whole film along in an enjoyable way, with his delivery as this central host-type figure. The CW’s take on The Lost Boys appears to be cursed. The show is intended to be a contemporary TV reboot of the classic 1987 movie, giving us sexy young vampires looking dead cool, having sexy blood-sucking times and floating extremely creepily in a pretty resort town. What could go wrong? Well, quite a lot, as it turns out.
The show had recently begun shooting a pilot episode, only for the Covid-19 pandemic to shut the production down. But material was filmed and The CW executives have now had an opportunity to review the footage, and it seems they’re not particularly enthused with what they’ve seen.
As such, it’s being reported that The Lost Boys is being “rolled,” meaning it’ll be now be reevaluated as a prospect for the 2021/22 season. This may indicate that when lockdown restrictions lift, the show won’t be heading back before...

The CW’s pilot for The Lost Boys is taking shape. The show will be a fresh take on the classic 1987 movie of the same name, presumably featuring a new family arriving in Santa Carla and realizing that the nightlife has a little more bite than they were expecting.
The series is being helmed by Heather Mitchell and Rob Thomas, who share an impressive resume that includes Scandal, Veronica Mars and iZombie. And now, Deadline is reporting that Branden Cook (Industry), Lincoln Younes (Grand Hotel) and Ruby Cruz (Castle Rock) have been cast as the show’s leads.
Branden Cook will play the main character, Garrett. He’s the oldest brother in the family that’s moved to the seaside town, and the one who’s slowly drawn into its vampiric subculture. Lincoln Younes is taking over the Kiefer Sutherland character Benjamin, presenting a seductive image of freedom and immortal youth.

"Have you any experience in the mortuary arts?" Trapdoor Pictures has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror anthology film titled The Mortuary Collection, which is getting its big premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin this weekend. The film features four unique horror stories that progress through four decades - a '50s housewife struggles with a mysterious presence in her bathroom; a '60s college boy gets a taste of his own fraternizing medicine; and a '70s husband makes some tough decisions about his wife; culminating in the '80s-set The Babysitter Murders. The film is wrapped around with a story featuring a young girl who enters a secret room in a mortuary and learns the backstory of the mortician’s favorite deaths. Starring Caitlin Custer, Clancy Brown, Barak Hardley, Christine Kilmer, Mike Nelson, and Sarah Hay. I'm always down for more anthology horror, and this looks...

Two weeks ago, it was all change for The CW and its TV revival of The Lost Boys.
Despite drafting together an exciting ensemble cast for the planned pilot, and shooting said pilot episode in May of this year, the Powers That Be ordered The Lost Boys back to the drawing board soon after the first test footage emerged. Put simply, The CW’s top brass were impressed with the script, but believed the execution was lacking.
And so began a total overhaul, after it was announced that the network would recast its Lost Boys revival, sparing just two actors: Medalion Rahimi and Dakota Shapiro. The former is attached to the part of Stella (essentially an updated version of the Star character from ’87), while Shapiro is David.
But rest assured, as Rob Thomas tells EW, The Lost Boys reboot is nearing the warm light of day.

Just when you thought The CW’s TV reboot of The Lost Boys was gaining some momentum, Deadline brings word that the project has effectively been sent back to the drawing board – recasting all but two roles.
Of the ensemble that was in place for The Lost Boys, only two – namely Medalion Rahimi and Dakota Shapiro – remain. The former is attached to the part of Stella (essentially an updated version of the Star character from ’87), while Shapiro is David.
According to Deadline, together they’ll headline the “new, reworked pilot, which will likely film by the end of the year.” So, while they initially signed on for The CW’s pilot episode, the likes of Rio Mangini (Sam) Sarah Hay, Del Zamora, Cheyenne Haynes, Haley Tju, Tyler Posey and Kiele Sanchez won’t be heading to the vampire underworld, after all.
It’s a pity, really, but given the fact...

The CW’s in-development Lost Boys series is being retooled after a disappointing pilot. This may be good news for Corey Feldman, though, who wants a Frog Brothers reunion with Jamison Newlander.
Commenting on Twitter, Feldman had this to say about the proposed new pilot:
“Hmmmmm… Jamison Newlander R U thinkin’ what I’m thinkin’?
The original pitch for The CW series was to make the Frog Brothers the Frog Sisters, with Sarah Hay, Cheyenne Haynes and Haley Tju cast in the roles. An apparently poor response from the network to the Catherine Hardwicke-helmed pilot though means that this idea may now have been scrapped. Some of the original pilot cast, including Medalion Rahimi and Dakota Shapiro, will be kept on board, however.
Although the exact casting may be up in the air at the moment, we think the series will mostly stick to being a reboot of the original movie,...

Casting on The Lost Boys TV show is really beginning to heat up – and fast.
Earlier this month, for instance, we brought you the news that The CW had cast Sarah Hay, Cheyanne Haynes and Haley Tju as the infamous Frog Sisters, who now join an ensemble cast comprised of Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey, Kiele Sanchez, Medalion Rahimi (Still Star-Crossed) and Dakota Shapiro. Not bad, right?
But that’s not all: Per Deadline, it’s been confirmed that Del Zamora (Mayans Mc) and Rio Mangini (Everything Sucks!) have also climbed aboard The Lost Boys as series regulars, with the latter star poised to step into the shoes left vacant by the late, great Corey Haim. Yes, that’s right; he’ll be playing Sam Emerson in The CW’s pilot episode – itself based on the 1987 movie of the same name – though no further details on Mangini’s character were revealed at the time.

We’ve got some interesting news today for The CW reboot series, The Lost Boys. A few new cast members have been announced that include Sarah Hay as Mollie, with Cheyenne Haynes (Camping) and Haley Tju (Bella and the Bulldogs) as the Frog sisters. Yes, they changed the beloved Frog brother characters (played by Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander in the original) to female characters, because nothing is sacred.
I’ve pretty much come to terms with the fact that this reboot series is going to be nothing like the original movie, because although the story was cheesy, the actors in the movie were really good, and it was an original idea, so you were excited by the story. It just doesn’t really need a regurgitation, in my opinion. But I bet it will be popular because the WB draws in a large teenage audience, and vampires. Vampires help.

Joel Schumacher’s 1987 teen vampire horror The Lost Boys is an underrated gem. Sure, most of its awesomeness is down to a hugely charismatic young Kiefer Sutherland as the lead vampire, but that’s a casting that goes a seriously long way. It seems like someone at The CW’s as big a fan as I am, too, because they’re currently putting together the cast for a pilot that should herald a full-blooded Lost Boys TV show.
Already, we’ve heard of some exciting additions to the project and today, Deadline’s reporting that Flesh and Bone‘s Sarah Hay, Camping‘s Cheyanne Haynes and Bella and the Bulldogs’ Haley Tju are joining the roster, which so far includes former Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey and Kingdom alum Kiele Sanchez, with Medalion Rahimi (Still Star-Crossed) and Dakota Shapiro (Valley of the Boom) also having key roles. Sarah Hay (Flesh and Bone), Cheyenne Haynes (Camping) and Haley Tju (Bella and the Bulldogs) are set as series regulars opposite Tyler Posey and Kiele Sanchez in The Lost Boys pilot, from Warner Bros TV, Spondoolie Prods and Gulfstream TV, the CW’s series adaptation of the iconic 1987 Warner Bros horror comedy movie.
Written by Heather Mitchell and directed by Catherine Hardwicke, The Lost Boys is set in sunny seaside Santa Carla, home to a beautiful boardwalk, all the cotton candy you can eat…and a secret underworld of vampires. After the sudden death of their father, brothers Michael (Posey) and Sam Emerson move to Santa Carla with their mother, Lucy (Sanchez), who hopes to start anew in the town where she grew up. But the brothers soon find themselves being drawn deeper and deeper into the seductive world of Santa Carla’s eternally beautiful and youthful undead.

Our lives consist of uncertainties. To progress forward is to confront each new possibility as the product of dream or nightmare — an open door to leap through and succeed or a closed window to surrender all hope of escape. We retreat within ourselves for the motivation to jump higher and rely on those we trust to help break our inevitable falls. One road leads to comfort until the shine wears off. The next winds its way towards rebirth until tragedy strikes or self-doubt sets in. Round and round we go, overlapping each chapter with its replacement until we can no longer recognize past from future. We strive for meaning through work, love, and family, sacrificing identity to a performative dance forever transforming us into our next “best” self.

"A Lynchian head trip." Whoa. Blue Fox Entertainment has unleashed an official red band trailer for a new "psycho-thriller" film titled Braid, which originally premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. From filmmaker Mitzi Peirone, making her feature debut, the story is about two wanted women who decide to rob their wealthy psychotic friend who lives in the fantasy world they created as children. Say what? Yeah, this look trippy and wild and violent and dangerous. In order to get away with the money, the woman have to take part in a deadly perverse game of make believe. Peirone's Braid stars Madeline Brewer, Imogen Waterhouse, Sarah Hay, Scott Cohen, Brad Calcaterra, and Mary Looram. This certainly seems as crazy as it sounds, and the footage is quite wacky. Hard to make any sense of it, but I think that's the point. Here's the official red band trailer (+ poster) for Mitzi Peirone's Braid,...

Before Warner Bros. submitted ‘A Star Is Born” in drama at the Golden Globes, Lady Gaga had been the overwhelming favorite to win Best Comedy/Musical Actress — and could very well win Best Drama Actress as well if the submission is approved. But as every person who’s on the internet knows, this ain’t her first rodeo with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Gaga famously won in 2016 for “American Horror Story: Hotel” and even more famously helped produce one of the greatest awards show moments of all time.
Gaga took home the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress Globe for her turn as The Countess over Kirsten Dunst (“Fargo”), Sarah Hay (“Flesh and Bone”), Felicity Huffman (“American Crime”) and Queen Latifah (“Bessie”). “Braid” is something of a throwback to certain films of the ’60s and ’70s, in which “psycho chillers,” giallos, and those art-house items that critic Pauline Kael called “Come-Dressed-As-The-Sick-Soul-of-Europe Parties” got all tangled up in supposedly shocking tales of decadence and perversion. Here, three young women — two on the lam, one off her gourd — play twisted “games” at a isolated upstate New York manse.
People get tied up, somebody dies, and every note in the key of hysteria is struck with the insistence of a hammer on a child’s xylophone. But suspense, let alone psychological nuance or narrative development, all take a back seat to what feels like an empty, mannered series of dress-up photo opportunities. “Braid” does look great. But Mitzi Peirone’s debut feature is so void of any substance beyond the pretentiously pictorial that one suspects her real calling is in music videos or advertising.
