Tantoo Cardinal will receive the Equity in Entertainment Award at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Canada gala in Toronto on May 29.

The second annual event, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, will see Cardinal, who is of Cree and Métis heritage, receive the honor presented in partnership with the Indigenous Screen Office. Over a 50-year career, Cardinal has film credits that include Dances With Wolves, Killers of the Flower Moon, Legends of the Fall, Black Robe and Hold the Dark.

Her TV series credits include Longmire, Echo, Stumptown, Three Pines, Godless, Blackstone, Moccasin Flats and North of 60. Cardinal received the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honor, in 2009.

The Equity in Entertainment Award, which honors those who reflect and amplify the voices and stories of underrepresented communities, was created in 2016 by The Hollywood Reporter as part of its Women in Entertainment annual event in Los Angeles.

The cast of Apple TV+’s hit series starring Jason Segel, Jessica Williams, and Harrison Ford as therapists trying to figure out their own lives has just added a two-time Emmy winner to its cast. Per Variety, Jeff Daniels, who won an Emmy in 2013 for his role in The Newsroom and again in 2018 for his role in the miniseries Godless, has joined the cast of Shrinkingfor its forthcoming third season.

The casting marks Daniels’ return to comedy after appearing in more dramatic roles of late, such as the upcoming Michael Russell Gunn Cold War drama Reykjavík,where he will play President Ronald Reagan opposite Jared Harris’ Mikhail Gorbachev. Daniels has a huge body of work, including the cult classic 1994 hit Dumb and Dumber with Jim Carrey, Pleasantville (1998), and The Martian (2015).

Jeff Daniels has joined the cast of “Shrinking” at Apple TV+, Variety has learned.

The actor will appear in the series’ upcoming third season, which was originally announced in October 2024. Daniels will appear in a guest star role as Jimmy’s (Jason Segel) father. Along with Segel, the cast of the critically-acclaimed dramedy also includes Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, Christa Miller, and Ted McGinley.

This will be the latest TV role for Daniels in the past several years. Lawlor died on Feb. 13 at a veterans’ hospice facility in Albuquerque, N.M., with his daughter Riel by his side, per an obituary posted by his family. A cause of death was not disclosed.

John Lawlor, an actor who had made a string of guest shots on various mid-’70s TV series before landing a regular role in 1976 on Cloris Leachman’s The Mary Tyler Moore Show spin-off Phyllis on CBS and just more than a decade later played Headmaster Bradley on NBC’s popular sitcom The Facts of Life, died February 13 at a veterans’ hospice facility in Albuquerque. He was 83.

His death was announced by his family, who write, “John will be remembered for his great love and affection for his family, his work and enjoyment of theater, television, movies, literature, and of course, his beloved horses.”

Born June 5, 1941, in Troy, New York, Lawlor graduated from the University of Colorado, and would perform with the Nomad players, a theater troupe founded in 1951 that would include such actors as Lawlor, Larry Linville and Joan Van Ark.

Created, written, and directed by Scott Frank, the miniseries is set in 1884 and centers its story around a predominately female cast, which is unique given it takes place in the Wild West. That being said, such a component makes its narrative all the more interesting to watch. Kim Coates is one of those actors people rarely know the name of but always recognize their face, at least until Sons of Anarchy became a television phenomenon in 2008. Lasting for seven seasons, the action crime drama found Coates playing Tig Trager, a character who was somewhat of a sadistic loose canon yet brought a lot of heart to Samcro. Now, Coates is back on our screens in the Netflix series American Primeval, but before we get there, the Canadian-born actor took time to reflect on Sons of Anarchy in a new interview with MovieWeb.

Coates mentioned at the time Soa came along, he wasn't necessarily looking to sink his teeth into a lengthy television role. Up until then, he'd been enjoying success appearing in the likes of Open Range, Waterworld, Black Hawk Down, and The Last Boy Scout. Production is officially underway on the thriller The Trip, which is coming from 87North, XYZ Films, and director Jorma Taccone (MacGruber and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) – and Deadline reveals that Taccone has assembled a cool cast for the film. He's also writing on the second season of Severance, the bracing sci-fi drama on Apple TV+ that's returning after nearly three long years off the air. He could finally break that losing streak with Netflix’s “All the Light We Cannot See.” Adapted from Anthony Doerr‘s 2014 novel of the same name, written by Steven Knight, and directed by Shawn Levy, this miniseries depicts the lives of two teenagers during WWII — one a blind French girl and the other a German boy forced to fight for the Nazi regime. Laurie features as Uncle Étienne, a reclusive, agoraphobic WWI veteran suffering from Ptsd. Laurie has always been a classy performer and he again brings a lot of heart, warmth, and intelligence here to this role, as noted by several critics.

At first, that might seem like an unusual match, until you remember that Kogonada has made one of the best science fiction films of the 21st century with After Yang, a solemn prayer for those who are so indebted to technology that they've forgotten how to love the people they live in the same house with.

Viggo Mortensen's intentions for a feminist Western fall short due to a lack of authentic genre reinvention. The film's highlights include Mortensen and Krieps' chemistry on-screen despite a lackluster script. Vicky Krieps shines as the saving grace with a clear vision of her character in this misguided Western.

The pair find their love tested when Olsen decides to fight with the Union, and Vivienne is left to fend for herself in a corrupt and cruel town.

Although its unlikely that it will ever reach the same prominence that it did during the 1950s and 1960s, the Western genre seems to have made a comeback in the 21st century. Prestige television shows like Godless and Deadwood have proved that adding historical insight to tales of the Wild West doesnt have to be counterintuitive to the story, as westerns can be both historically accurate and exciting. While there have been many interesting new takes on the standard Western narrative that have merged it with other genres, theres also something remarkable about a deliberately old-fashioned crowd-pleaser that isnt afraid of being a throwback. While largely forgotten since its release, the Ed Harris-directed film Appaloosa is an exciting historical thriller that contains some of the hottest moments in the history of Westerns.

While Westerns have been an integral part of the cinematic ecosystem since the earliest days of the medium, the genre has seen just as much success on television. Classic Western shows like Rawhide and Gunsmoke brought the exciting, action-packed adventures often seen in Western films to the small screen and fleshed out their narratives in far more depth than what the parameters of a two-hour film allow. In the 21st century, Western television has seen many novel reinventions, such as the Shakespearean tragedy of David Milchs work on Deadwood and the science fiction twists of Jonathan Nolans reboot of Westworld. While Western television is often an exciting piece of escapism, the genre is rarely reflected in a historically accurate way in prestige shows. However, the brilliant 2017 Netflix miniseries Godless drew from historical facts about Americas frontier era to become the most accurate Western show of all time.
