In addition to their acclaimed original movies and television shows, Netflix has also produced a growing number of popular limited series spanning virtually every genre. From period piece dramas to tautly paced scary stories, these limited series are perfect for viewers not looking for a multi-season commitment. There is something reassuring about going into a series knowing that a clear beginning, middle, and end have already been laid out. These limited series offer that complete sense of closure, with each episode perfectly paced to move towards that finish.
For the sake of clarification, a limited series here is a show limited to a single season, omitting shows running for a set of two or three planned seasons. Similarly, anthology shows, even if they tell a complete standalone story within a single season like Netflix's hilarious "Beef," are also omitted. No one can say that Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh delivers the same movie time after time. In an eclectic three-decade career, he has directed crowd-pleasing all-star vehicles, action comedies, political dramas, micro-mini experimental works, true-life story ("Erin Brockovich") and even a film starring porn actress Sasha Grey ("The Girlfriend Experience").
In addition to his Oscar success, Soderbergh has also found success bringing his singular vision to the small screen, winning an Emmy for directing and editing the TV movie "Behind the Candelabra" (which isn't included on this list of big screen outings). He's also been nominated twice as a director on "The Knick," as a cinematographer on "Behind the Candelabra" and as a producer on "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired," "His Way" and "Godless."

Emmy Award-winning actress Merritt Wever has a consistent talent for bringing a certain kind of esteem to her seemingly grounded roles, and for carrying her characters’ tragedies and yearnings in every minute of her performances. Although she is widely known for her portrayal of the lovably bumbling Zoey Barkow on Nurse Jackie, Wever has earned ample respect for a number of more graceful, forceful roles including those in Hulu’s emotional Tiny Beautiful Things, limited Netflix western Godless, and Apple TV+’s feminist anthologyRoar. She imbues her characters with a great sense of wisdom, patience, and maturity, which adds a layer of maternity to even her most youthful roles but never becomes condescending in the slightest.

Kurt Sutter’s latest project, The Abandons, has already got fans buzzing with excitement and speculation. Since the success of Sons of Anarchy, Sutter has built a reputation for creating gritty worlds full of outcasts and violence, and his new Netflix Western appears no different. Set in 1850s Oregon, The Abandons might seem like a shift from his outlaw biker tales. However, there are several hints that the show could be more connected to Sutter’s previous work than initially thought. It could be a hidden prequel to Sons of Anarchy.
The Abandons follows a group of outcast families fighting against corrupt enemies in a lawless landscape. Sound familiar? While not much has been released about the show, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating that The Abandons will offer a backstory to Samcro's origins and the Teller family at the center of it all. Exclusive: Apple TV+ has landed for development Dilettante, a series starring Jeff Daniels as a character that will likely get the New York media circles buzzing, Deadline has learned. The project, from Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Berlanti Productions, is inspired by Dana Brown’s memoir about working for former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.
Written by Brown and Julia creator Daniel Goldfarb, Dilettante is described as a fictionalized coming-of-age story set in the glamorous and cutthroat “Golden Age” of magazines in 1990s New York.
Daniels will play a fictional magazine editor that is certain to draw parallels to Carter the way another work of fiction about a young assistant to a powerful New York magazine editor, the movie The Devil Wears Prada, has been evoking Anna Wintour as a prototype for its editor character played by Meryl Streep.

Released on Netflix in November 2017, Godless is a Western drama comprised of seven episodes. Created, written, and directed by Scott Frank, the miniseries is set in 1884 and centers its story around a predominately female cast, which is unique given it takes place in the Wild West. That being said, such a component makes its narrative all the more interesting to watch. In a series that manages to stay true to what makes Westerns so compelling in the first place, it also successfully offers something new to the genre. Women were always a part of the Western narrative. Godless simply brings them center stage without making them mere prostitutes or damsels in distress.
Upon its debut, Godless was met with widely positive reviews from critics as well as audiences. With a Tomatometer score of 83% and a comparable Popcornmeter score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, the show is considerably well liked. It was...

Ever since Dev Patel made his on-screen debut at the age of 17 on the E4 British teen drama "Skins," he's been a consistent presence in film and television. Born in the United Kingdom to Gujarati parents, Patel has consistently redefined what it means to be an Indian actor working in Hollywood, whether it involves championing the types of stories that rarely get told in American and British cinema, or expanding the breadth of roles that casting directors often put them in consideration for. Over the course of his career, he's earned an Academy Award nomination and took home a BAFTA, the highest film honor in his native England.
To be perfectly honest, Patel doesn't really have a lot of stinkers to his name (the dire live-action production of "The Last Airbender" from M. Night Shyamalan notwithstanding). So, when we look at his career highlights, we're looking at good-to-great films, unlike...

Netflix's new Western series has become a global success. Producing original movies and TV shows since the early 2010s, the streaming service's catalog of Western content now offers a diverse range of stories exploring the rugged charm of the American frontier. Longmire was A&e's highest-rated original drama before Netflix picked it up in 2014, starting with season four, and releasing the sixth and final season in 2017. Around that same time, the Western miniseries Godless was also released on Netflix to rave reviews.
The Coen brothers' Western anthology film, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, was released on Netflix in 2018, presenting six separate tales that blend humor and tragedy and showcase the unpredictability of frontier life. "Friday Night Lights," the television drama that followed the ups and downs of the Dillon High School Panthers football team, is rightly considered by critics and viewers to be one of the finest shows of the 21st century. Though the series was never a Nielsen ratings hit over its five seasons (curious given that it's a hugely compelling and accessible saga centered on the most popular sport in the United States), those who loved it rode a weekly emotional rollercoaster of victories, defeats, romances, break-ups and one murder (an ill-considered plotline that stands as the series' only egregious misstep). The writing, spearheaded by showrunner Jason Katims, was, aside from the aforementioned detour, always sharp and surprising, while the cast, led by Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, struck resonant chords with their portrayals of decent yet flawed human beings trying to do right by their teammates,...

Kim Coates is one of those actors people rarely know the name of but always recognize their face, at least until Sons of Anarchy became a television phenomenon in 2008. Lasting for seven seasons, the action crime drama found Coates playing Tig Trager, a character who was somewhat of a sadistic loose canon yet brought a lot of heart to Samcro. Now, Coates is back on our screens in the Netflix series American Primeval, but before we get there, the Canadian-born actor took time to reflect on Sons of Anarchy in a new interview with MovieWeb.
Coates mentioned at the time Soa came along, he wasn't necessarily looking to sink his teeth into a lengthy television role. Up until then, he'd been enjoying success appearing in the likes of Open Range, Waterworld, Black Hawk Down, and The Last Boy Scout. He was – and still is – a great character actor doing what character actors do.

Although Western films like Tombstone may not be in fashion anymore, theres still plenty of love for the genre on the small screen. Some of the most iconic Westerns have come in the form of serialized dramas, taking everything that was so innovative about Hollywood movies and transferring it to sweeping, long-running narratives that audiences can tune into week after week. The best-ever Westerns are those that use the stylish flair of this genre and blend it with a rich, important story that audiences can relate to - and modern Westerns have essentially mastered this craft.
Television Westerns are generally much larger in scale than their cinematic counterparts like Tombstone, with more ensemble casts and narratives that branch off in countless different directions - this creates endless possibilities for the projects, and likely explains why they have become so popular in recent years. The Western is an inherently complicated and sprawling genre,...

We recently got the chance to talk to filmmaker Mohamad El Masri, who's worked as a writer on shows like Here & Now and October Faction. He's also writing on the second season of Severance, the bracing sci-fi drama on Apple TV+ that's returning after nearly three long years off the air. He told us about that experience, but first, we talked about his short film Other Other.
Other Other is about an unlikely romance between Spyro and Myka. The two of them are dating online, their romance confined mostly to screens. Another issue: they're from different dimensions. Other Other is a story about online dating in the multiverse.
How do they handle that situation? Check out Other Other above, and then read our interview with El Masri!

As is tradition with Bethesda titles, Starfield allows players to customize their character right from the start. Choosing specific origins and traits at the character creation screen will largely determine your experience in Starfield’s adventures and how the in-game characters will interact with you.
One of the important aspects of the game is choosing your religion to follow. There are three in Starfield, and your choice to join one will open some doors, close others, and also give you some specific loot that you can use in the game.
Which Religion Should You Choose in Starfield? Which path will you gravitate towards in your playthrough?

Yellowstone has become one of the biggest shows on television, as it should because the series is a brilliant piece of art, which deserves every praise it gets. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the neo-Western drama series revolves around the Dutton family who own the largest ranch in America. While there is a lot of infighting amongst the family they must all stand together to protect what’s there from several enemies. Yellowstone stars Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Luke Grimes, Kelsey Asbille, Wes Bentley, Jefferson White, and Ian Bohen. Now, that Yellowstone is ending soon with Part 2 of its Season 5, we are here to suggest some similar shows while you wait for the final Yellowstone episodes.

Robert Downey Jr. could be about to join an exclusive actors club by becoming just the fourth person to win both an Oscar and an Emmy for acting in the same calendar year.
Downey Jr. won Best Supporting Actor at this year’s Oscars for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer.” That Christopher Nolan biopic, which also won Best Picture, followed Cillian Murphy as J. Across more than two decades as the parallel arm of the Sarajevo Film Festival, CineLink Industry Days has grown into the leading film and TV industry event in the Balkan region, an incubator of talent from Southeast Europe — and, increasingly, beyond — and a crucial stop for globetrotting industry executives looking to discover fresh cinematic voices.
The mid-summer event, which this year takes place Aug. 17 – 22, traditionally comes on the heels of the Locarno Film Festival and wraps in the run-up to Venice and Toronto, occupying a perhaps fitting slot in the calendar. “Not too big, but not small at all,” is how Maša Marković, now in her third year as the festival’s head of industry, characterizes it. As a result, Sarajevo “manages to create this sense of being the place to be.”

Quick Links What Is Godless About? Real-Life Incidents Depicted in Godless How Godless Uses History to Tell the Story of Frank Griffin
Three years before captivating the world with The Queen's Gambit, revered Hollywood writer Scott Frank delivered one of the best and most historically accurate Western miniseries on record. Godless, released as a 7-part miniseries in 2017, is loosely inspired by the happenings in Utah, New Mexico, and other western states as settlers expanded their territory along the American frontier.
Although the story is not lifted verbatim from any single event recorded in the history books to tell a true story, it takes cues from several real-life incidents that occurred in the 18th century. The characters do not exist in real life, but they approximate the kinds of people forced to endure the hard lifestyles of the American West. While it was once considered to be a genre as popular as superhero films are now, western cinema has faced somewhat of a decline in the last few years. If the box office disappointment of Kevin Costners ambitious passion project Horizon: An American Saga is an indication of anything, it's that viewers are much more adjusted to seeing sprawling westerns like Yellowstone or Godless at home. The possibility of a mass-market Western classic like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly or Unforgiven existing today seems slight, but that doesnt mean that there arent filmmakers doing something interesting with the genre on a much smaller scale. John Macleans Western dark comedy Slow West has the makings of a future cult classic, which also features an extraordinary performance from Michael Fassbender.

Jeff Daniels is always a reliably excellent performer whether its in comedy or drama, TV or film, and the veteran actor has turned in another masterclass performance in Netflix’s “A Man in Full.”
Adapted from Tom Wolfe‘s novel of the same name and created by “Big Little Lies” helmer David E. Kelley, “A Man in Full” follows Daniels as real estate mogul Charlie Croker, who tries to protect his empire and legacy from crumbling when he falls into sudden bankruptcy. Daniels dominated the screen here, chewing scenery, spitting it out with venom, and then re-chewing the scenery some more. Whatever you may think of the show, Daniels is never anything less than ferociously good, as noted by critics.

Hugh Laurie has never won an Emmy. That seems like an egregious oversight on behalf of TV academy voters, considering the British actor starred as one of the best TV characters of this century in “House.” Still, 10 nominations (we’ll get to those later) and zero wins.
He could finally break that losing streak with Netflix’s “All the Light We Cannot See.” Adapted from Anthony Doerr‘s 2014 novel of the same name, written by Steven Knight, and directed by Shawn Levy, this miniseries depicts the lives of two teenagers during WWII — one a blind French girl and the other a German boy forced to fight for the Nazi regime. Laurie features as Uncle Étienne, a reclusive, agoraphobic WWI veteran suffering from Ptsd. Laurie has always been a classy performer and he again brings a lot of heart, warmth, and intelligence here to this role, as noted by several critics.

One of the reasons the world of streaming television can be appreciated is that it allows directors a nice middle ground to play in between their films. Rick Famuyiwa became a certified shepherd of numerous Star Wars shows, Mark Mylod used his success on Succession to get The Menu made, and Scott Frank transitioned from noir master to miniseries icon with projects like The Queen's Gambit and Godless. Now video essayist-turned-overnight genius Kogonada has contributed to this season of The Acolyte. At first, that might seem like an unusual match, until you remember that Kogonada has made one of the best science fiction films of the 21st century with After Yang, a solemn prayer for those who are so indebted to technology that they've forgotten how to love the people they live in the same house with.

Viggo Mortensen's intentions for a feminist Western fall short due to a lack of authentic genre reinvention. The film's highlights include Mortensen and Krieps' chemistry on-screen despite a lackluster script. Vicky Krieps shines as the saving grace with a clear vision of her character in this misguided Western.
Viggo Mortensen takes us to the 1860s Western frontier for a story that is as sensitive as it is violent, and as romantic as it is tragic. The Dead Dont Hurt follows Holger Olsen (Mortensen), a Danish immigrant who makes a living as a carpenter. The somewhat recluse finds his life changed when he falls in love with Vivienne LeCoudy (Vicky Krieps), a French Canadian immigrant who lives against societal expectations. The pair find their love tested when Olsen decides to fight with the Union, and Vivienne is left to fend for herself in a corrupt and cruel town.

Although its unlikely that it will ever reach the same prominence that it did during the 1950s and 1960s, the Western genre seems to have made a comeback in the 21st century. Prestige television shows like Godless and Deadwood have proved that adding historical insight to tales of the Wild West doesnt have to be counterintuitive to the story, as westerns can be both historically accurate and exciting. While there have been many interesting new takes on the standard Western narrative that have merged it with other genres, theres also something remarkable about a deliberately old-fashioned crowd-pleaser that isnt afraid of being a throwback. While largely forgotten since its release, the Ed Harris-directed film Appaloosa is an exciting historical thriller that contains some of the hottest moments in the history of Westerns.

While Westerns have been an integral part of the cinematic ecosystem since the earliest days of the medium, the genre has seen just as much success on television. Classic Western shows like Rawhide and Gunsmoke brought the exciting, action-packed adventures often seen in Western films to the small screen and fleshed out their narratives in far more depth than what the parameters of a two-hour film allow. In the 21st century, Western television has seen many novel reinventions, such as the Shakespearean tragedy of David Milchs work on Deadwood and the science fiction twists of Jonathan Nolans reboot of Westworld. While Western television is often an exciting piece of escapism, the genre is rarely reflected in a historically accurate way in prestige shows. However, the brilliant 2017 Netflix miniseries Godless drew from historical facts about Americas frontier era to become the most accurate Western show of all time.
