“American Idol” marked its 20th birthday on Monday night with “The Great Idol Reunion,” a one-hour special featuring past “Idol” contestants and judges and celebrating the show’s history, both during its years on Fox and its current home on ABC.
“Tonight we are opening the Idol yearbook,” said host Ryan Seacrest as he revealed the “Idol” VIP area, which included such familiar faces as Tamyra Gray, Pia Toscano, Anthony Federov, Brooke White, Justin Guarini, William Hung, and Seacrest’s unforgettable frosted hair.
Wasting no time getting to Hung, whose name is “synonymous with ‘American Idol,'” noted Seacrest, he returned to the stage to reprise his epic Ricky Martin performance of “She Bangs” as former judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson felt right at home alongside the current panel of Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
In classic Abdul form, she kicked into Paula-speak, which fans surely fondly remember.

The power of Nick Cave had forever hinged on summoning the spirits of the dark.
Be it his time as frantic frontman to the clamorous Birthday Party, or since the 1984 start of a menacing solo career with the floating membership of the Bad Seeds by his side, Cave’s catalog of violence-driven characters and furiously dire narratives cut like a knife, fresh with blood and amped-up with post-punk gospel fervor.
That all of this changed in 2015, with the tragic accidental death of Cave’s 15-year-old son, Arthur, exemplified “the crack in everything” that Leonard Cohen, a noted inspiration to Cave, wrote of on “Anthem”: “That’s how the light gets in.”
From Cave’s family tragedy, a second family emerged: that of a devoted fan base who showered the singer and author with warmth and comfort beyond fandom.
“Nick saw this incredible outpouring of love and concern for him...

NBC briefly misidentified country singer Mickey Guyton as Grammy nominee Jhene Aiko during a preshow performance at Super Bowl Lvi on Sunday.
As seen in the video below, the broadcast network’s telecast first panned over Guyton, who was on the field in preparation for her performance of “The Star Spangled Banner,” with a chyron that labeled her as “Jhene Aiko” during Aiko’s performance of “America the Beautiful.” A few seconds later, the incorrect name disappeared under Guyton and the camera shifted to Aiko, who was singing, and a new chyron correctly identified her as “Jhene Aiko.”
When Aiko concluded her performance of “America the Beauitful,” Guyton sang the National Anthem ahead of the 6:30 p.m. Et kickoff for the big game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. It became the Viper Room, one of the hottest music venues in the city. In an interview with Vanity Fair published Thursday, Noah Hawley teased his FX Alien series, which he is gearing up to shoot “next spring,” clarifying that “it’s not a Ripley story.”
The Fargo and Legion creator was referring, of course, to the iconic character played by Sigourney Weaver, who faced off with a Xenomorph in Ridley Scott’s original 1979 film, Alien.
“She’s one of the great characters of all time,” Hawley said, “and I think the story has been told pretty perfectly, and I don’t want to mess with it.”
From Hawley’s perspective, 20th Century’s Alien films—helmed by Scott, James Cameron and David FIncher—have always been “great monster movies” that are “not just monster movies.
“They’re about humanity trapped between our primordial, parasitic past and our artificial intelligence future—and they’re both trying to kill us,” he said. “Here you have...

If you suddenly find yourself very excited about Outriders, you’re not alone. While the game’s demo proved to be much more engaging than many people suspected it would be, it’s really the fact that 2021 has gotten off to such a slow start that has made the prospect of diving into this title that much more appealing than it may otherwise be.
In case you don’t know, Outriders is a new looter shooter from developer People Can Fly: the same studio responsible for brilliant shooters like Bulletstorm and the Painkiller games. Anthem‘s rise and fall is one of those stories that will almost certainly be told countless times in the coming years as we all try to wrap our heads around how a project that had so much going for it fell so hard and fast with hardly a chance to pick itself up. In some ways, it felt like the game was cursed.
However, if the recent news that Anthem‘s reboot was canceled got you thinking of another live-service game that got off to a pretty rough start…well, you’re not alone. Shortly after news broke that Anthem Next had been canceled, many wondered whether Marvel’s Avengers would be next. After all, the game has reportedly lost millions of dollars so far as well as a huge chunk of the player base that eagerly signed on for the chance to play what seemed to be an infinite Marvel adventure.

Church led the rendition on twangy electric guitar, Sullivan joining in on “broad stripes and bright stars.” They sang in unison on...

Now this is how you kick off Super Bowl 2021. Before the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Feb. 7, country artist Eric Church and R&b singer Jazmine Sullivan took to the stage for a unique rendition of the National Anthem. Eric kept things casual in denim jeans and a purple jacket as he played the guitar and fireworks blasted into the air. As for Jazmine, she turned heads for all the right reasons when wearing a white pantsuit. Country music fans are familiar with Eric's hit songs including "Springsteen," "Drink In My Hand" and "Mr. Understood." He's currently preparing for the release of his new album this April and a tour...

Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan just slayed the national anthem ahead of CBS’ Super Bowl Lv — but it took them awhile. The pregame “Star-Spangled Banner” blew way past the over/under betting line.
Though we are waiting for the official stopwatch results, it is safe to say the performance wasn’t even close to the “under.” And if you don’t want to take our word for it, see the BetOnline.ag tweet at the bottom of this post.
Unofficially, let’s call it 2:17-ish for now.
The original over/under line for the Church and Sullivan national anthem duet was set at two minutes flat. That was until Florida TV reporter Zach Maskavich recorded video of their “Star-Spangled Banner” rehearsal and uploaded it to YouTube. Not cool, dude.
On Maskavich’s video, the rendition ran for two minutes and 16 seconds. That blew up the gambling line, forcing many...

Super Bowl Lv starts at 6:30 p.m. Et at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes will face off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by quarterback Tom Brady, for football’s — and television’s — biggest event of the year.
Festivities will kick off with country star Eric Church and R&b artist Jazmine Sullivan singing the National Anthem, while H.E.R. will sing “America the Beautiful.” Inaugural poet Amanda Gorman will join the pregame ceremonies and recite an original poem that recognizes three honorary Super Bowl captains: Los Angeles teacher Trimaine Davis, Tampa Bay nurse Suzie Dorner and Marine veteran James Martin.
The Weeknd will headline the halftime show as the first-ever Canadian solo performer. At a recent press conference, he did not give away too many details. Given the violent thematics of smash album “After Hours,” he did note the performance will be family friendly.

We're just one day away from the 2021 Super Bowl! That's right, on Sunday, Feb. 7, the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl Lv. Before the game begins, Jazmine Sullivan and Eric Church are set to sing the National Anthem together. Last year, at the 2020 Super Bowl, Demi Lovato kicked off the festivities with a performance of the National Anthem. “The most important collaboration in my life has been with Geddy,” Neil Peart wrote in 2014. As Rush’s drummer and lyricist, Peart had a profound link with Geddy Lee, the band’s bassist, singer, and keyboardist — though he also emphasized the importance of guitarist Alex Lifeson. “Certainly I don’t want to diminish Alex’s role,” Peart continued. “After all, he is our Musical Scientist, the Funniest Man Alive, and a shamefully underrated and thoroughly wonderful guitar player. But the musical relationship between bass player and drummer, the rhythm section,...

The NFL announced that country star Eric Church and R&b singer Jazmine Sullivan will sing the National Anthem as part of the Super Bowl Lv pregame festivities on Feb. 7, while Grammy-winning R&b artist H.E.R. will sing “America the Beautiful.”
While it is unclear whether Church and Sullivan will be trading verses or harmonizing, the intended message of teaming up a white country singer with a Black R&b artist to sing the National Anthem at a time of social unrest is clear. The Super Bowl is traditionally the most-watched U.S. television broadcast of the year, drawing an estimated 102 million viewers in 2020.
The game, which features the Weeknd as Halftime performer, takes place at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Fla., and will air nationally on CBS.

Late last night, Sony revealed via the PlayStation website that they have decided to honor refund requests for those who purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via the PlayStation Store. More importantly, they have decided to remove Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store “until further notice.”
Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red was quick to respond to this decision with one of their “yellow background tweets of doom” that have come to define the year in Cyberpunk 2077 updates. In it, the team noted they were aware of Sony’s decision and are still working to improve the game and get it back on the PlayStation Store as soon as possible.

The word you want to use at times like this is “surprising.” Yet, nothing about this is surprising to anyone who has been following Cyberpunk 2077 since the game launched last week.

The Game Awards 2020 concluded its cavalcade of celebrity cameos, The Last of Part 2 awards, and Fortnite cameo reveals with a teaser trailer for BioWare’s next entry into the Mass Effect franchise.
The trailer doesn’t offer many details (another trend of the evening), but it does feature some sweeping views of space coupled with grand ramblings that conclude with an Asari digging through the snow of an ice planet and uncovering a remnant of discarded N7 armor. The implication is that this is Shepard’s armor and that we’re viewing the aftermath of Mass Effect 3‘s stunning conclusion which seemingly unraveled the fabric of the Mass Effect universe.
The trailer concludes with the Mass Effect title card hovering above the text “will continue.” It’s designed to be a teaser for the next Mass Effect game, but at this point, it’s starting to feel like more of a threat.

It’s been a little while since we’ve gotten an update on the next Dragon Age game, but BioWare was good enough to check in at The Game Awards 2020 with this teaser trailer for the studio’s next RPG:
In true Dragon Age fashion (at least as far as this project is concerned) the trailer doesn’t give us much to work with. Don’t you just love the endless teasing of a high-profile game? Doesn’t that always justify the drawn-out hype rather than lead to titles that fail to live up to overblown expectations or the burdens of years worth of anticipation?
The biggest takeaway from this trailer is the official return of Solas; a character whose involvement was only hinted at during Dragon Age‘s 2018 teaser. Solas is a hedge mage who played a major role in Dragon Age: Inquisition as both a companion and potential romance option.

Square Enix has posted its earnings for the first half of the fiscal year, and a financial hit to its Digital Entertainment: HD Games division has pointed a clear finger at Crystal Dynamics’ Marvel’s Avengers for helping to create an operating loss of more than $48 million in the second quarter. This has been compounded by the continuing success of Square Enix’s Mmo division, which has posted profits in both quarters thanks in large part to games like Final Fantasy Xiv.
The writing was on the wall early on for Marvel’s Avengers when the Crystal Dynamics team had precious little time to fix issues arising from the beta version before the game was released. Since then, despite the team behind the game working incredibly hard to correct its course, it’s occasionally been compared to BioWare’s Anthem, a title largely mocked for its notoriously troubled launch last year.

The Marvel’s Avengers team has announced that the game’s next-gen update and Kate Bishop Dlc have been delayed as part of the team’s attempt to focus on some of the title’s core issues and missing features.
“Marvel’s Avengers’ launch was not without turbulence, and we recognize that a number of issues detracted from your enjoyment of the game,” says Scot Amos, Crystal Dynamics Head of Studio. “This does not align with Crystal Dynamics’ value of craftsmanship, and for that, we sincerely apologize.”
Before we dive into some of the interesting talking points inspired by this post, let’s cover the specifics of the delays. At present, the previously planned Kate Bishop Dlc has been pushed back from its planned October debut. Amos does not offer a new release date for the Dlc but he does refer to this as a “slight delay,” so the hope...

When Marlon Riggs’ best-known work, “Tongues Untied,” premiered on PBS nationwide in 1991, some stations around the country wouldn’t run it. The program became a political talking point when candidate Pat Buchanan weaponized the landmark documentary during the 1992 Republican Party presidential primaries, and the deeply personal essay on the experiences of Black gay men and the search for identity was at the center of a culture war. Condemned as “pornographic” by right-wing pundits who distorted the film’s content, “Tongues Untied” was debated in the halls of Congress as the movie became the centerpiece of a wider debate — namely, how the National Endowments of the Arts (Nea) distributes its funding. “Tongues Untied” was one of many recipients, having received a $5,000 grant.
Riggs hit back with a fiery New York Times op-ed titled “Meet the New Willie Horton,” and didn’t mince words. “Because my film, ‘Tongues Untied,’ affirms the lives and dignity of [Black] gay men,...

Every now and again, a jaw-dropping sale comes along that makes our eyes pop out of our heads like Stanley Ipkiss in The Mask, and today is one of those days.
That’s right, Bioware’s online-centric action-rpg Anthem, which was one of 2019’s biggest releases, is currently on sale for a mere $1.49, and can be snagged from the brick-and-mortar retailer GameStop as part of the store’s September Cyber Weekend. It should be noted that this is for a used version, but if you’re more interested in picking up a brand new physical copy of the title, fear not. For an extra 51 cents, it can be yours. Indeed, that’s an impressive 90 percent saving from its original price of $18! Pretty awesome deal, right?
Of course, while Anthem was considered a bit of a disappointment when it launched early last year – the studio even went as far as apologizing...

Nothing is official at the moment, but it seems quite likely that a Borat sequel is headed our way sometime soon. Collider broke the news earlier this month. “Plot details remain vague,” they write, “but what we know is that Borat is no longer the little-known Kazakh TV personality he played in the original 2006 movie. The public knows who he is now, so he has to go ‘undercover’ to interview people.”

“If I can’t make it out of this ditch/I better make a home of it,” Dave Hause sings in his song “The Ditch” off his 2019 album, Kick. It’s a school of thought I’ve been trying to adopt since 2020’s pandemic plotline went off the rails. If this mess isn’t going to end anytime soon — and thanks to good ol’ American dysfunction, that seems to be the case — we have to adapt to living in the ditch.
But that doesn’t mean resignation. Instead, it’s about evolution.

During the Gamescom opening ceremony, BioWare surprisingly showcased an extensive breakdown of Dragon Age 4.
The footage in question is largely a blend of developer interviews and very early test footage. We’re going to emphasize “early” here as it seems that BioWare is very much still working on Dragon Age 4 and that you shouldn’t expect to play the game for a long time.
The heart of the matter, though, is that it sounds like BioWare intends for Dragon Age 4 to be a return to RPG form for the company after they’ve spent the last few years controversially working on Anthem and other titles that many felt was below their historic standards.
At the heart of that potential return to form is the idea that Dragon Age 4 will rely heavily on player choice. BioWare says that choices in Dragon Age 4 be drastic enough to potentially dictate whether or not...
