“Black Warrant,” the hit Netflix series currently in the platform’s India Top 10 nearly three months after its premiere, was the focus of a panel at the ongoing Cinevesture International Film Festival in Chandigarh, India.
The discussion featured creator-showrunner Vikramaditya Motwane, producer Sameer Nair of Applause Entertainment, and lead actors Zahan Kapoor and Rahul Bhat, who explored the “synergy for success” that has made the prison drama a streaming standout.
Based on “Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer” by Sunil Gupta and journalist Sunetra Choudhury, the series chronicles Gupta’s 35-year career at India’s notorious Tihar prison, where he oversaw infamous inmates including serial killer Charles Sobhraj and and kidnappers Kuljeet Singh (alias Ranga Khus) and Jasbir Singh (alias Billa).
Motwane, also known for Netflix’s “Sacred Games,” explained that the adaptation process required narrowing the book’s extensive timespan. “When you read the book, it’s fantastic because it’s so dramatic.

The series tries to provide interesting drama while also exploring the complicated moral issues within the prison system.
Vikramaditya Motwane, a famous director best known for “Sacred Games,” worked on this project with Satyanshu Singh, who wrote and directed it. The popular TV show is based on Gupta’s best-selling book “Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer,” which she wrote with writer Sunetra Choudhury. Netflix India’s latest series “Black Warrant” delves into the complex world of Delhi’s notorious Tihar Prison through the eyes of an idealistic jailer who confronts corruption, violence and moral ambiguity within the system.
Based on the bestselling book “Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer” by jailer Sunil Kumar Gupta and journalist Sunetra Choudhury, the series chronicles the true story of a prison officer’s 35-year journey through one of India’s most infamous correctional facilities.
A black warrant is a jailer’s authorization to carry out the execution of a convicted criminal. The series benefits from Gupta’s insider knowledge of the prison. During his time working there he oversaw prisoners including Charles Sobhraj (aka ‘Bikini Killer’ and ‘The Serpent’) and kidnappers Kuljeet Singh (alias Ranga Khus) and Jasbir Singh (alias Billa).

Vikramaditya Motwane is one of the rare artists working in the Hindi film industry who doesn’t stick to one genre, both as a storyteller and a producer. His directorial debut was a coming-of-age film, Udaan. Then he switched gears to romance with Lootera, which happens to be one of my favorite love stories of all time. After that he locked his protagonist in a room in a high-rise apartment for Trapped. A few years later, while the superhero/vigilante genre was leaning towards CGI-heavy spectacle, Motwane took the grounded approach to talk about the water scarcity in Mumbai through Bhavesh Joshi Superhero. Simultaneously, he collaborated with Anurag Kashyap and set the bar for made-for-ott crime dramas with Sacred Games. He followed that up with an all-out action film, which doubled as a meta commentary on the parasocial relationship between stars and fans, titled Ak vs Ak. In 2023, he released Jubilee,...

When Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai Fame Saanand Verma Was Touched By The Audience Response (Photo Credit – YouTube)
It isn’t easy to make people on a daily basis, and very few Indian television shows have become cults in a true sense. Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai is one such show that has been lucky enough to enjoy unprecedented love from the masses and is still running successfully. One of the biggest reasons behind its cult status is the actors, who have added more to their characters. One such name is Saanand Verma!
Saanand is now a known face in the entertainment industry and has been part of popular Indian outings like Raid, Sacred Games, and Chhichhore. But before becoming popular, he had a phase of struggle. For those who don’t know, he was part of several advertisements before making it big. He found some sort of recognition with Fir, led by Kavita Kaushik.

Celebrated actor Manisha Koirala and filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane discussed the evolving landscape between theatrical and streaming platforms during a session at the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa, where Koirala also revealed plans to write a comedy book about 1990s and 2000s actresses adapting to Gen Z culture.
“For me as an actor, be it for the big screen or web series, it’s the same amount of work that is needed, sincerity needed. The preparation, mind frame, everything is the same,” said Koirala, who recently starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s hit Netflix series “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.”
Motwane, who directed Prime Video’s “Jubilee” and Netflix’s “Sacred Games,” noted that streaming offers more creative flexibility. “The wonderful part of streaming is that you’re not stuck to saying with theatrical that okay, you have to make a movie two to two and a half hours.

Pan Indian mega-budget releases have become quite common in almost every regional movie industry, and Tollywood (the Telugu industry) has long since mastered this trade, evident from the massy entertainers from directors like S.S. Rajamouli. Telugu superstar Ntr Jr’s latest release, Devara Part 1, an action-adventure spectacle set in the coastal region of Southern India, carries the industry’s tradition of delivering potent masala movies. With the scope of such ventures growing wider and going global, an ensemble of talented actors across the country are assembled to appeal to regional audiences, and similar efforts are noticeable in Devara Part 1 as well. To be honest, the movie is a one-man show led by Ntr Jr, and aside from Saif Ali Khan as the prime antagonist, there wasn’t much for the supporting cast to do, but despite that, they played their parts convincingly to sustain the immersion.

After the success of Sacred Games and Mirzapur, the Hindi region of the Ott space was filled with all kinds of episodic crime dramas. Off the top of my head, we got Delhi Crime, Hasmukh, Your Honor, Undekhi, Flesh, Aashram, A Simple Murder, Dark 7 White, and more. Paatal Lok managed to stand out, but since it was backed by an insanely talented star cast and a team of brilliant directors and writers, its success didn’t come off as a surprise. But the crime drama show that floored me was Mithya. Sure, it had stellar actors like Huma Qureshi and Parambrata Chatterjee in it and was being helmed by Rohan Sippy. However, everything depended on a newcomer, Avantika Dassani, and boy did she deliver in spades. The writing of her character was absolutely diabolical, and the cold way in which she went about the misty mountains of Darjeeling executing...

Collin D’Cunha surely has what it takes. Call Me Bae, which is streaming on Amazon Prime from September 6, is no ordinary happening. It is monstrously entertaining and insanely binge-worthy. What’s more, it doesn’t make any concerted effort to seduce us into its storytelling.
It doesn’t need to. It breaks all the rudimentary rules of the streaming business with content that is unapologetically formulistic and emphatically entertaining. The series is at once a jolt to the norm and a visit to La La Land.
Every character is real yet fairytale-like. Good looks are prerequisite. But no one here is an airhead. The protagonist discusses Naipaul with as much authority as Gucci. The idea is to tease audiences with a high dose of the don’t-we-know-this-character aphrodisiac.

Ic 814 Controversy: Bollywood, recognized as the world’s largest film industry, has historically served as a vibrant reflection of India’s diverse cultures and narratives. In recent years, a disturbing trend of Hinduphobia has surfaced in mainstream cinema, sparking concerns within the Hindu community about the negative portrayal of their religion and cultural practices. This growing issue has led to increased scrutiny of how Hindu beliefs are depicted on the big screen. This article delves into the implications of these portrayals, particularly focusing on recent controversies that highlight a perceived bias against Hinduism in Bollywood films.

Indian streaming series such as Netflix’s “Heeramandi,” Prime Video’s “Mirzapur” or Disney+ Hotstar’s “Bad Cop,” could soon be more influential than Bollywood.
India’s massive population and its embrace of multiple forms of video streaming are having far-reaching implications for the country’s content industries, its wider economy and the country’s position on the international stage, says an in-depth new report.
“Beyond Screens – Streaming VoD’s Impact on the Creative Economy,” was published Wednesday. It was commissioned by Prime Video India and conducted by Singapore-based Media Partners Asia.
The report paints the picture of a sector that is now attracting close to $6 billion a year of local content investment, on a par with South Korea, and demonstrates that India is a top three market in terms of net new subscriber additions and revenue growth for both Amazon and Netflix.

Anurag Kashyap’s slow but steady downfall should be studied in film institutes. It’s truly spectacular that the man who made influential films like Black Friday, Gangs of Wasseypur, and Mukkabaaz and helmed a show like Sacred Games is struggling to connect with viewers. When he was at the top of his game, his political opinions resonated with people. Now, it sounds like a whole lot of noise. He frequently goes on social media to diss the artists who have given him their blood, sweat, and tears to turn his dreams into reality, while celebrating problematic artists just because they are the flavor of the month. Then there are his attempts at acting. He was great in Ak vs. Ak; I’ll give him that. But since 2016, he has been in around ten acting roles, and all of them have been varying levels of bad. And just when it...

Noted actor Pankaj Tripathi faced one of the toughest challenges of his career when he was asked to portray former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in biopic “Main Atal Hoon.”
Vajpayee (1924-2018) was a poet and a politician who served three terms as Prime Minister. He belonged to the Bharatiya Janata Party (Bjp), the party, which is currently in power in India. L.A.-based Wild Sheep Content, headed by former Netflix international honcho Erik Barmack, is adapting German No.1 bestseller “When Butterflies Fly Loops” for Mexico, as it branches out into unscripted with Adal Ramones, Mexico’s No.1 standup, and boards Lucía Puenzo’s gangster epic, “The Gunwoman (Pepita’s Legend).”
Starring Luisana Lopilato, and just announced, “Gunwoman” reps a “giant story” account, said Puenzo, of real life mobster Margarita Di Tulio, which is backed by a far-ranging consortium of good and great players in and outside Argentina.
All three titles see Wild Sheep driving ever deeper into big IP in highly packaged and star-laden projects, while branching out in sectors and territorial reach – strategies which may well become text-book tactics as streamers and broadcasters pull back on commissions or buys over much of international.
Their announcement comes three days before Jimena Rodríguez, producer of “Three Idiots” and head of Mexico...

Currently in pre-production, the movie is backed by one of the grandest alliances ever assembled to produce an Argentine feature film, thriller “The Gunwoman” (Pepita’s Legend)” being produced by a consortium led by Argentina’s Zeppelin Studio, headed by Lucas Jinkis. The alliance also takes in Historias Cinematográficas, Erik Barmack’s Wild Sheep Content, Yair Dori, Bar Rimoni, Javier Furgang, 7395 Media and Non Stop Studios.

Celebrated Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap was in vintage free, frank and forthright form at a masterclass in Toronto on Sunday.
“I have a massive problem with authority and authority has problems with me,” was one of the many nuggets from Kashyap, whose very first film “Paanch” (2003) was banned in India and whose subsequent work has been the subject of domestic scrutiny while being celebrated both at home and globally.
Kashyap’s cop noir “Kennedy,” which had its world premiere at Cannes earlier this year, is on an extended festival run. It opened the 12th edition of Bmo International Film Festival of South Asia (Iffsa), where he delivered the masterclass. Kashyap was in conversation with festival patron, acclaimed filmmaker Anup Singh (“The Song of Scorpions”). Unlike masterclasses that look back at the filmmaker’s oeuvre, Singh chose instead to look at the broad themes that have informed Kashyap’s work over...
