The Final Destination series is ingenious. Sure, the series has settled into a rhythm it hasn’t really iterated upon since 2000. But the conceit of dodging death, only for death to subsequently hunt down those it deems cheaters, is no less compelling now than it was when the franchise—once a The X-Files spec script—first premiered. On the heels of another new entry, the deliciously titled Final Destination: Bloodlines, why not revisit horror’s history of protagonists dodging death time and time again?
Oz Perkins’ The Monkey is undoubtedly the most recent example of random, Rube Goldberg-style deaths, and it was an unqualified success because of that. Dutch sensation The Lift isn’t quite Final Destination, though its haunted, killer elevator sure does operate like it’s working off death’s list. What about last year’s Witchboard?

When Herk Hervey’s “Carnival of Souls” (1962) was first released to the world, it was restricted to exhibitions at drive-in theaters, thus open to only a niche audience. A few years down, it is named in the same breath as Hitchcock’s 1960 masterpiece: so, what has contributed to its slowly accumulating and enduring cult status? The answer lies in the film’s preoccupation with the very contrary of that sense of longevity: the surrender to the act of gradual decay to which every human is pushed, of life slipping away second after second, atom after atom. We are obliged to take on the weight of a tragedy, this snuffing out of life, which we neither understand nor approve of.
Carnival of Souls (1962) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:
In the introductory scene of the film, three young men challenge three young women to a racing competition, which ends disastrously for the women...

Joe Bob Briggs is back at “The Last Drive-In,” with Shudder debuting the first trailer for its variety show’s seventh season ahead of its March 7 premiere.
Along with new footage and a promise of many double-features, the show also announced that the first episode would guest feature Spencer Charnas, frontman of the horror-slanted heavy metal band Ice Nine Kills. The program, hosted by Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy the Mail Girl, also teased its season premiere programming, promising a 100th birthday celebration for “the first great American horror film.” This seventh season will cover more than 30 genre titles.
Charnas had previously teased his visit to the show to fans, posting on his own Instagram earlier this year, saying he is “Pre Lon’d up” — perhaps a reference to silent film star Lon Chaney ahead of the episode’s centennial celebration.

They were made for lovin’ music, too! Evan Stanley (son of Kiss singer-guitarist Paul Stanley) has teamed up with Nick Simmons (son of Kiss singer-bassist Gene Simmons) to record an album’s worth of music together.
Late last year, Evan and Nick posted a video of them singing an acoustic version of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” on Instagram. Now, they’ve taken their musical partnership to the next level.
A few days ago, Evan posted a photo of himself with Nick, captioning it, “One song turned into 10 real quick.” He followed that up with another post of the two performing one of their new tunes alongside singer-guitarist Jacob Bunton, writing, “Wrote this one with our buddy Jacob yesterday.”
Paul Stanley commented on the performance simply with the word, “Magic!!!!,” while Nick’s sister Sophie Simmons wrote, “We Want The Album.”

Twists have a long, storied history in horror. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Diabolique, Carnival of Souls, and Psycho remain among the most notable early horror films with twists and turns you won’t see coming. That tradition continued through the mid- to late-20th century with films like Se7en and The Sixth Sense. After the turn of the millennium, filmmakers leaned further into the unexpected to construct their visions of terror, thus delivering other essentials such as The Village, The Others, and The Mist.

Unfortunately for Twilight Zone fans, the beloved series has lain dormant since 2020. Its coldly received fourth revival was a flop, and many of its best episodes are part of its older catalog. The series is inimitable, after all. Only a tiny handful of works have mastered the art of narrative karma, and even fewer have done so with the effortless aplomb of Rod Sterling’s masterpiece.
While BBC’s Black Mirror anthology can be considered a modern spiritual successor, it usually leans more into horror than The Twilight Zone. Understandably, it also has distinctly British sensibilities. It seems almost impossible for American creators to imitate Sterling’s success and intellect. Fortunately, there are a few cinematic gems that may help Twilight Zone fans scratch that itch. So, picture, if you will, Herk Harvey’s Carnival of Souls. The psychological horror film debuted in 1962, although it didn’t immediately captivate audiences.

The Others, the modern ghost story masterpiece starring Nicole Kidman, will finally start streaming on Shudder next January, after being unable to stream on any subscription service. In fact, it was only earlier in 2024 that the film became widely available to rent or buy online. The first month of the year is famously known for not having the best offers in horror, but a revisit to one of the best horror films in recent decades may prove otherwise. The Others arrives on the horror-based streaming service on January 1, 2025. As you wake up from partying the night before on New Year's Eve, the film is sure to help wake you up.
Directed by the Chilean-Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar, The Others follows Kidman’s Grace Stewart, the mother of two siblings, Anne and Nicholas, as they live in complete isolation in their European manor in the mid-1940s. Grace is awaiting her husband's return from the war,...

Theres always that strange transition period in horror movies where things can get lost in the shuffle. The 70s and its nihilism broke late in the decade to swerve into masked killers and the slasher genre. That heyday was far shorter than people remember but the late 80s did something similar in transitioning to straight to video smash successes and a crazy number of sequels and adaptations. That well, too, would dry up, and when Wes Craven released Scream in 1996, the landscape would shift to smart slashers and then found footage. The teen slasher era was first with things like Urban Legend, Scream sequels, Disturbing Behavior, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and hell, even Final Destination posits literal death as a slasher villain. These are more along the lines of the top shelf example but one that could qualify for a best horror movie you never saw And...

Occasionally, an indie film slips through the mainstream and becomes a hit. It's easiest to do in the horror genre, where a low budget doesn't keep fans away. In 2023, Older Gods became one of the crossover hits, a microbudget horror movie with a trailer that garnered over 500 thousand views on YouTube (watch the trailer below). Using thick layers of atmosphere and drawing on the terrifying lore from H.P. Lovecraft's body of work, Older Gods managed to create a spellbinding horror mystery with very little money. Now it's streaming for free (through the link below).
In Older Gods, a man travels to the Welsh countryside to investigate the murder of his close friend, who himself had been accused of multiple murders. He comes across a mountain of evidence that his friend was compiling, linking a sinister apocalyptic cult to the murders, a discovery that endangers him and leads him deep...

It's finally here! October, the best month of the year, especially if you're a horror movie fan. Any time of year is the right time to watch a horror movie, but there's something extra special about watching horror movies as we draw closer and closer to Halloween. And to help you get into the spirit of the season, this month's horror streaming roundup is all about ghost movies! Not just haunted house movies, mind you — but movies about ghosts and all their spooky antics. I like all horror subgenres. Vampires? Hell yes. Slashers? Absolutely. Monsters? Yep! But of all the various types of horror movies, movies about ghosts are my personal favorite. I can't say that I believe in ghosts, but like Fox Mulder, I want to believe. Until some sort of ghostly evidence presents itself to me, I'll stick with the movies. So grab your candy corn, carve a pumpkin or two,...

A murderer is tormented by the ghosts of his victims in this frustrating story that doesn’t have the storytelling heft its premise deserves
Here is a horror film with a decent premise. Karter (Venkat Sai Gunda) is an artistic sort – specifically, a photographer, apparently of some renown. He’s also mute. And a serial killer. He’s depressed; he feels trapped by his crimes, but he can’t stop killing, he doesn’t want to go to prison and he can’t quite face suicide. One day, he begins to feel he isn’t alone in his house. It seems the vengeful ghosts of his victims are resting uneasily and have set out to torment him.
But there’s something here that just falls short. It’s a shame that the film-makers were working with such an evidently small budget: the vengeful ghosts are giving Halloween at Alton Towers vibe,...

Ride the Black Chariot: A Hitchcockian Horror of Vengeance and Retribution
Hex Studios is excited to announce Black Chariot, an intense and deeply disturbing supernatural horror directed by Lawrie Brewster, inspired by the macabre genius of Alfred Hitchcock. Drawing from Hitchcock’s dark thrillers like Rebecca (1942) and Psycho (1960), Brewster seeks to invoke Hitchcock’s spirit, combined with his love of classic film noir and Val Lewton’s atmospheric slow-burn horrors.
Director Lawrie Brewster shared, “My childhood was spent haunted and mesmerized by the romantic and seductive veil Hitchcock cast over me. It shaped my vision of horror, sensuality, and my understanding of fear and obsession. I am thrilled to finally produce a horror film that combines my love for the genre with inspirations drawn from his incomparable genius. Horror was in a bit of a funk in the late 90s. Then 25 years ago, in July 1999, The Blair Witch Project came along and changed everything.
In a 1996 article published in The Philadelphia Enquirer, film critic Desmond Ryan bemoaned the state of mainstream films. Citing such films as Independence Day, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Eraser, and that year’s hurricane thrillride Twister, Ryan argued that Hollywood had become more interested in special effects than logic or character.
“It all began,” Ryan wrote, “when Twister’s killer tornadoes sucked up everything in their path – tractors, cows, common sense, continuity, plausibility, and the quaint notion that movies should have characters you care about.”
By the end of the 1990s, the horror genre appeared to have descended into a creative funk of its own. Of the horror films released toward the end of the decade, many of the most high-profile examples were remakes or sequels in somewhat tired franchises.

There is no forgetting the putrid and almost sickly sweet smell of human death once it has become an olfactory memory. Those unfamiliar with this hyper-specific stench should count themselves lucky. However, that odor of mortality is all the characters of Reeker have to keep themselves safe. Danger lurks wherever that fetor goes. Dave Payne’s 2005 horror film introduced a unique villain named after his most notable attribute, yet by the time that cadaverous stink has been inhaled by potential victims, the chance for escape may have already expired.
Following a silly but grisly cold-open — a random family becomes a roadside picnic for The Reeker, who remains unseen early on — director and writer Payne sets up what looks to be a garden-variety slasher: one by one, young folks are murdered in gruesome fashion, somewhere out in the middle of nowhere. No doubt that pitch sounds familiar. As straightforward as the film starts out,...

Some horror movies, such as Jordan Peeles Get Out, are immediate commercial and cultural successes. Others, like Robin Hardys The Wicker Man, take time to seep into the popular consciousness, finding their audience in coming generations. Herk Harveys Carnival of Souls belongs to the latter group, an ultra-low budget effort from 1962 that has all the hallmarks of a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 offering amateurish acting, stilted dialogue, and some oddball directorial choices. Yet the uncanny power of Carnival of Souls meant it would be rediscovered through the years via late-night showings and a growing cult following. An ethereal zombie movie that rose from the grave to thrill discerning viewers, it influenced the work of some key directors, making it a must-see for horror fans.

The real story begins long before you know it in Desert Road, a very smart, trippy chiller that plays with the conventions of survival horror and takes them in a wholly unexpected and, ultimately, really quite moving direction. Making her directorial debut, Shannon Triplett shows a sophisticated grasp of genre dynamics, with a bold use of space — a stretch of the Mojave Desert doubling for Death Valley — that proves more and more gripping as the film’s mysteries unfold. At which point, its boundaries begin to blur, slipping between horror and sci-fi in a way that recalls a hypnotic blend of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s The Endless and Herk Harvey’s Carnival of Souls.

Black and white horror films rely on light and shadow to create chilling atmospheres, captivating viewers in timeless terrors. Films like Psycho and Carnival of Souls excel in psychological horror, immersing audiences in subtle, plausible frights. The Innocents, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Night of the Living Dead set standards for eerie, unsettling storytelling in monochrome.
Black and white horror films have a unique ability to amplify the sinister imagery and tones, rendering them among the scariest in film history. Devoid of color, monochrome horror movies rely solely on nuanced plays of light and shadow along with striking compositions to generate nail-biting frights. This atmospheric visual simplicity channels viewers’ attention towards the emotional experience rather than superficial distractions. Regardless of era, black and white cinematography lends an air of timeless immediacy and believability to onscreen terrors.

Consisting of five segments, Southbound (2015) is a horror anthology movie that saw direction under numerous creatives: a filmmaking collective called Radio Silence directed the first segment, and the last. Filling the void was Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, and Patrick Horvath. And within each story, talented thespians perform to their greatest extents, emitting heartfelt screams that will echo in your head long after an initial viewing.
While there are dozens of well-known examples of filmmakers making more grounded anthology films — take Jim Jarmusch with Night on Earth (1991) and Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) — most popular projects of this ilk are categorized as horror films. Just look at Tales from the Crypt (1972) and Creepshow (1982), for instance. You've undoubtedly heard of those, if you haven't seen them outright. But the same can't be said for Southbound.
The film at hand flew drastically under the public radar upon release, and its popularity has remained rather stagnant ever since.

It’s October, which means you are likely crafting an endless queue of horror films to consume. When it comes to a single streaming service to dedicate your eyes to this month, The Criterion Channel takes the cake with three different series. First up, ’90s horror brings together such films as The Rapture (1991), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), The Addiction (1995), and Ravenous (1999), while Art-House Horror features Häxan (1922), Vampyr (1932), Eyes Without a Face (1960), Carnival of Souls (1962), Onibaba (1964), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Sisters (1973), Eraserhead (1977), House (1977), Suspiria (1977), Arrebato (1979), The Brood (1979), The Vanishing (1988), Cronos (1993), Cure (1997), Donnie Darko (2001), Trouble Every Day (2001), Antichrist (2009), and more. October is the time for horror, which makes it a great time for independent movies.
As long as independent movies have existed, horror movies have provided a huge bulk of the films made by artists outside the studio system. It’s one of the cheapest and easiest genres to make, with some of the best potential to make a profit, and has unsurprisingly thrived in the independent film market. Many of the most important and acclaimed American horror movies were independent productions. “Night of the Living Dead” practically created the zombie film, while the original slasher “Halloween” was a tiny budget indie made for just $300,000. Sure, there are plenty of quality horror films made by studios, but nothing beats the grit and pure terror that great indie horror films can provide.

"Jacob's Ladder" reveals that the terrifying visions of a Vietnam veteran are actually attempts to save his life on the battlefield. In "Dead End," a family lost on their way to a party actually died in a car crash and are unaware of their own deaths. "Reeker" surprises viewers by revealing that the college students being killed off were already dead from a car crash at the start of the film.
While it is usually a cop-out for a movie to reveal that the hero was dead all along, sometimes, this classic twist can be shockingly effective. The revelation that a story’s hero has secretly been dead for the entire plot, unbeknownst to themselves, is one of the oldest tricks in the book. The premise dates back as far as author Ambrose Bierce’s endlessly influential 1890 short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.”

If you tried to guess the trajectory of the young couple’s idyllic new relationship in Jim Vendiola’s wildly inappropriate yet incredibly close to the heart romantic short Pretty Pickle you wouldn’t even come close. The award-winning Filipino-American filmmaker probes the perils of succumbing to our own insecurities as he takes us beyond that hot and heavy honeymoon period where the rose-tinted glasses start to slip and reveals what happens when we question our partner’s seemingly innocent quirks. Vendiola deftly builds up the tension in his beautifully shot black and white genre blending short before leaving you slack jawed in its final moments. After an impressive festival run Pretty Pickle makes its online premiere on Dn today, alongside an extensive interview with Vendiola where we discuss using black and white cinematography to marry the film’s disparate tones, how he worked on ensuring the digital interfaces didn...

There’s a moment in “Insidious: The Red Door” that encapsulates why the movie isn’t more insidious. Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson), the father from the first two “Insidious” films (this one is number five), has just dropped his son off for his freshman year at college. The son, Dalton, is once again played by Ty Simpkins, who was just a spooked kid in the earlier films; now he’s a spooked surly emo art student draped in hippie hair. Eight years ago, Dalton and his father were hypnotized so that they would lose all memory of the Further, the spirit zone Dalton got sucked into. The hypnosis worked; they’ve forgotten the living nightmares they saw. But now the visions are coming back.

A number of lost souls find refuge in a small motel in the middle of nowhere, it’s only distinguishing characteristic being the ruins of an old Mystery Spot—a long-dead roadside attraction with strange metaphysical powers. Everyone at the Mystery Spot will be affected by its unique properties, but only some will survive its reality-shattering implications.
Apparently squeezing this one in in-between Vfw and The Leech, Graham Skipper makes another welcome genre appearance in Mystery Spot which, early on, certainly lives up to the name. Though this film doesn’t seem to have garnered as much genre press as Skipper’s other works, even if this one did receive its world...

A 1973 curiosity which has been released under several other titles – most notably Dead People – yet never quite taken off, Messiah Of Evil has recently been restored and is screening as part of the Retrospective strand at the 2023 Dundead film festival. It’s an oddly structured, messy yet atmospheric film with its roots in Hp Lovecraft tales, Night Of The Living Dead and Carnival Of Souls, clearly an influence on a lot of subsequent genre work yet easy for even quite serious fans to overlook altogether. Although the first half is very slow, once it picks up, there’s enough genuinely weird stuff to make you glad you didn’t.

Rob Zombie and Waxwork Records have collaborated multiple times in the past, and now they’re working together on a cool new project: a collection of classic horror movie soundtracks that will be released under the banner of “Rob Zombie Presents”! This line of never-before-released soundtracks, personally selected by Zombie, will include Spider Baby, Carnival of Souls, The Last Man on Earth, The House on Haunted Hill, Island of Lost Souls, plus many selections from the Hammer film library… and it all starts with the release of the soundtrack for the 1932 classic White Zombie. Of course it would start with White Zombie.
This 180 gram vinyl release comes in deluxe packaging, with new artwork by Graham Humphreys and liner notes and interviews by Rob Zombie. You can take a look at the White Zombie package at the bottom of this article.

As human beings, we can’t accept death. Most of us have trouble reconciling the end of one’s existence and the afterlife. It’s a hard pill to swallow — but it’s an inevitable conclusion that comes sooner or later. In life, we love and are loved, hoping that we make some small dent in the world. In death, we hold fast to the people we once were, desperately straining to stave off such a brutal coda. With both Herk Harvey’s wonderfully-peculiar Carnival of Souls and Alejandro Amenábar’s dream-like The Others, the characters learn what it means to live and die and how dangerous holding on can be.

Rob Zombie Presents Classic Horror Film Soundtrack Series Exclusively Through Waxwork Records: "Rob Zombie and Waxwork Records have partnered to release an exclusive, curated line of classic Horror movie soundtracks. “Rob Zombie Presents” will feature several never-before-released film soundtracks that were personally selected by the singer, songwriter, and filmmaker.
Rob Zombie and Waxwork are thrilled to announce their first soundtrack title as “Rob Zombie Presents White Zombie”. Starring Bela Lugosi, 1932’s White Zombie is considered the first zombie movie. It was also filmed on Universal Studio’s lot, using several props from other horror films of that time. Starring Madge Bellamy, Robert W. Frazer, and John Harron, the film follows the cast as they navigate zombies, love, obsession, and treachery. Initially slammed by critics upon its release, the movie has been reevaluated and praised by recent critics for its classic horror production. The film has gone on to influence mainstream media,...

Rob Zombie and Waxwork Records have joined forces to release an exclusive, curated line of classic horror movie soundtracks.
The series, called Rob Zombie Presents, will offer several never-before-released film soundtracks that Zombie personally selected.
“I have always been a huge fan of movie soundtracks, so I jumped at the opportunity to work with Waxwork on this project,” Zombie said in a statement. “I can’t wait to release these albums. So many of these films are greatly under-appreciated and they all contain such great music. So to be able to release these deluxe packages is a dream come true.”
The first soundtrack to be released is fittingly the one for White Zombie. The 1932 film starring Bela Lugosi is considered the first-ever zombie movie, and inspired the name for Rob Zombie’s former band, White Zombie. According to a release, the film was “slammed by critics upon its release” but...

The Movie: "Sole Survivor"
Where You Can Stream It: Shudder
The Pitch: Among the five installments (soon to be six) of the celebrated "Final Destination" franchise, one maxim sits at the core of every elaborate death contained therein, summed up by Tony Todd's Bludworth: "In death, there are no accidents, no coincidences, no mishaps, and no escapes." When someone escapes death -- say, a plane crash that kills everyone else on board -- the resident Reaper figure of the franchise explains that near-death experiences are something like bugs in a system that, in the end, always gets their man. Death as an active enforcer was a hit concept for these movies, but "Sole Survivor" was playing in the same sandbox decades ago.

Every decade — on the "twos" for some reason — Sight and Sound releases what may very well be the definitive list of the greatest movies ever made.
The organization asks film critics and filmmakers from all over the world, people who really know their stuff, to present their own lists of the ten greatest motion pictures in history. Those lists are tabulated and spun out into a mighty Top 100, giving movie lovers a chance to learn about a lot of amazing movies and consider the impact that history and cultural shifts in our collective opinions about movies have over time.
And as usual, we learned that critics and filmmakers over the world don't seem to like horror very much.
There are a handful of scary films on the Sight and Sound poll in 2022, but most are squarely in the realm of arthouse cinema, and could also be classified as dramas or...

Movie theaters bring entertainment and escapism. The smell of popcorn wafting through the air, the previews of coming attractions, and the communal reactions to seeing a movie on the big screen often bring a viewing experience that can’t be replicated elsewhere. It’s also a safe way to experience horror, as the terror is harmlessly confined to celluloid.
But what if it isn’t…?
This week’s streaming picks center around horror movies that feature or are set at the cinema. For the characters in these six titles, their haven becomes anything but when movie theaters turn into slaying grounds for killers and creatures alike.
