If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, parodies are an absolute love letter to the source material, especially when it comes to sci-fi films that tend to have persnickety fans.

Horror, rom-coms, and disaster films have all had send-ups, but the sci-fi ones land the best because they come from a place of deep respect. It is impossible to successfully spoof something if there is disdain for it. The best sci-fi parodies were made by fans to show appreciation for the films that make it such a special genre.

“The Bachelor” star Tayshia Adams hosted the show, where awards were presented to Paris Hilton, Kelly Clarkson and shows like “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

The night also spotlighted reality star and entrepreneur Bethenny Frankel with the Reality Royalty Award.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards are back, with Vanessa Hudgens hosting the ceremony live on MTV. Tayshia Adams took over hosting duties for the second part of the show, honoring the best in unscripted television.

The 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards will return on June 5, 2022, with Hollywood’s biggest names competing for Golden Popcorn trophies. MTV said Wednesday that it is combining its 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards and Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted shows into one event, to air Sunday, June 5 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt live from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.

The network today also revealed nominations for the combined shows, with Sony/Marvel’s juggernaut Spider-Man: No Way Home leading field with seven noms including for Best Movie. On the TV side, HBO/HBO Max’s Euphoria leads with six noms including Best Show, while the Unscripted lineup’s top nom was VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race with four.

This year’s Movie & TV Awards, which originally were to be held June 4 with the Unscripted portion on June 5, feature two new categories: Best Song and Here For The Hookup. New Unscripted categories include Best Reality Return, Best Music Documentary, Best Reality Romance and Best Reality Star.

Fan voting begins today across the 26 gender-neutral categories via vote.

Exclusive: Indonesian director Joko Anwar (Impetigore) is preparing to make his English-language debut with Fritzchen, an adaptation of the classic short story by Charles Beaumont that is in development at Village Roadshow.

While the story published in Orbit magazine in 1953 (and later in Beaumont’s anthology Yonder) examines a boy’s encounter with a strange creature on the beach, blending elements of sci-fi and horror, details with regard to the film’s plot are being kept under wraps. HBO Max is putting The Prince in a permanent timeout: The streamer has cancelled the animated comedy, which took a satirical look at the imagined inner workings of the royal family through the eyes of young Prince George.

Paramount Plus and CBS are expanding their reality TV lineup. On Tuesday, the streaming service announced the renewals of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars,” “Queen of the Universe,” “The Real World Homecoming” and “The Challenge: All Stars,” as well as multiple new series.

“The Challenge: All Stars,” which landed a Guild of Music Supervisors Award nomination for best music supervision in reality TV, will launch its third season on May 11, Chris McCarthy, chief content officer of unscripted entertainment at Paramount Plus, announced on on Tuesday’s ViacomCBS’s Investor Day event, sharing that the universe is expanding across broadcast and cable channels.

Internationally, the streamer will launch “The Challenge: Argentina,” “The Challenge: Australia” and “The Challenge U.K.” Each will be available to stream on demand in their respective markets. T-Mobile is adding another streaming freebie to its customer perks.

ViacomCBS, looking to beef up Paramount Plus’s subscriber rolls, inked a deal with T-Mobile under which the wireless carrier will give one free year of the ad-supported tier of the streaming service to all new and existing customers on postpaid plans.

Starting next Tuesday (Nov. 9), eligible T-Mobile customers can redeem one year of Paramount Plus Essential via this link. After 12 months, the subscription will automatically renew for $4.99 per month (or the then-current price).

The free Paramount Plus offer is on top of the one-year-free promo T-Mobile is running with Apple TV Plus, available to most wireless subscribers. The carrier also bundles Netflix for no extra cost with most Magenta and Magenta Max plans.

ViacomCBS announced the T-Mobile pact as part of releasing Q3 earnings results, netting 4.3 million global streaming subscribers in the period — driven by Paramount Plus — to reach nearly 47 million.

Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer for Shirin Neshat and Shoja Azari’s satirical, surrealistic film “Land of Dreams,” which opens the Horizons Extra section of the Venice Film Festival. The filmmakers won the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival for their first feature film, “Women Without Men.”

“Land of Dreams” stars Sheila Vand, Matt Dillon, William Moseley and Isabella Rossellini. Beta Cinema has sales rights worldwide, except for the U.S., which is being handled by UTA.

The screenplay is by the late Jean-Claude Carrière and Azari. Carrière, who died earlier this year, was Luis Buñuel’s screenwriting partner on six of Buñuel’s films. Carrière won an Oscar for the short film “The Anniversary,” and was Oscar nominated for Buñuel’s “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “That Obscure Object of Desire,” as well as Philip Kaufman’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

Season 6 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” will premiere on Paramount Plus on June 24, the streamer announced on Wednesday, along with the official announcement of the season’s cast of competing queens.

Last year, ViacomCBS initially announced that Season 5 of “All Stars” would premiere on the company’s subscriber-based pay cable network Showtime, but then reversed its decision three months later, putting the season back on VH1 in the wake of the pandemic — and a wave of criticism by fans frustrated at having to pay for Showtime to see the series. This year, however, ViacomCBS didn’t flinch; the company is sticking to its previously announced plans to premiere “All Stars” on the subscriber-based Paramount Plus, part of a larger strategy to double down on reality offerings on the streamer.

RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars has found a second home at Paramount+, and 13 returning queens will get another shot at the crown.

The beloved series is being picked up at Paramount+ to air exclusively on the revamped streaming service.

A continuation of the series was first teased at The CW when it was said to be in development back in 2019.

Unfortunately, the network bailed on the project, but now it will live on as an original on Paramount+.

“This time, our out-of-touch old-timers are determined to help a bunch of knucklehead new-schoolers navigate the ruthless game of football on and off the field. They will clash through the pitfalls of fame, fortune and love,” read the description of The CW's new take on the franchise.

“When it premiered on @BET, @TheGameBET broke records. The sitcom is back on #ParamountPlus to offer a modern-day examination of Black culture through the prism of pro football,” Paramount+ said of the news on Twitter.

Several classic MTV and VH1 shows are getting reboots for digital streaming service Paramount+, ViacomCBS announced on Wednesday.

On the music front, VH1 and MTV franchises Behind the Music, Yo! MTV Raps and Unplugged will get an update on the platform. A new unscripted series, From Cradle to Stage, is also slated for the digital service. ViacomCBS is preparing to relaunch its streaming service as Paramount+ next month, and the company just unveiled a slew of new projects from brands like Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon, MTV, Showtime and CBS News.

From a new “Yellowstone” series from creator Taylor Sheridan to a new studio division to produce content within the world of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” here is everything the company just announced, all in one place:

CBS News will be among the ViacomCBS brands producing new original content for Paramount+, starting with its flagship newsmagazine series “60 Minutes.” The super-sized “60 Minutes+” episodes will start rolling out next week, led by correspondents Enrique Acevedo, Seth Doane, Wesley Lowery and Laurie Segall.

After months of buildup, ViacomCBS next week is set to flip the switch for Paramount Plus — its bulked-up streaming platform engineered to throw bigger elbows in an increasingly crowded market.

For now, the pricing won’t change. But this summer, the media conglomerate will lower the entry-level price for Paramount Plus, the new name of the rebranded CBS All Access.

The base, ad-supported tier of Paramount Plus, launching in June, will cost $4.99 per month — a dollar less than the current entry-level CBS All Access package with commercials. The full Paramount Plus premium tier with no ads (except in live programming) will be the same, at $9.99 per month.

There’s an important caveat, though: The $5 monthly plan for Paramount Plus, while it will include live sports including NFL games, will exclude local CBS stations. In June, the previous $5.99/month plan will be discontinued, but ViacomCBS said existing subscribers will not be...

RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars is sashaying from VH1 to Paramount+ for its upcoming sixth season, TVLine has confirmed, joining a few other familiar reality titles.

Though neither a cast nor premiere date are known at this time, whomsoever wins All Stars 6 will join previous winners Shea Coulee (Season 5), Monet X Change and Trinity the Tuck (Season 4), Trixie Mattel (Season 3), Alaska (Season 2) and Chad Michaels (Season 1).

The producers of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” have been booked and busy producing a new unscripted international drag queen singing competition (that’ll reportedly blow your wig off) for ViacomCBS’ all-new SVOD rebrand Paramount Plus.

“Queen of the Universe,” produced by World of Wonder, the company behind “Drag Race,” promises to be a singing competition like no other, wherein drag queens from all around the world compete to see who really rules the drag universe.

In addition, “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” is set to return, pitting the best of the best to compete for $100,000 and a coveted spot in the Drag Race Hall of Fame.

MTV Entertainment Group unveiled its slate of unscripted programming for Paramount+ at ViacomCBS’ investor day on Wednesday, including “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” making the jump from VH1 and revivals of classic franchises “The Real World” and “Road Rules.”

As TheWrap previously reported, “The Real World: Homecoming” will reunite the original cast of the first season of the groundbreaking reality series in the same loft they shared in 1992. I don’t know about you, but this writer is more than ready to start looking forward to the Halloween season. And one of the staples of my own ongoing cinematic celebration every year is checking out all the wonderful classic horror movies that Turner Classic Movies airs on their channel. And considering the mess that 2020 has been over the last several months, I thought this year it might be helpful to also include all the genre films that will be playing on TCM throughout the month of September, as it’s never too early to get ready for Halloween.

Color TVs, swimming pools and cars (especially cars). American culture of the 50s was fueled by desire for the newest status symbol – even the title of the latest monster movie was pitched to the upwardly mobile – get behind the wheel of the atomic powered Frankenstein 1970.

Take a look under the hood though and apart from a few modernistic bells and whistles (most notably its CinemaScope framing) director Howard Koch’s movie is doggedly retrograde. The swooning ingenues, skeptical villagers and dank dungeons – all would have fit comfortably in a Universal horror film of the 30’s.

Perched at the tip-top of Hollywood’s box office charts – at $2.78 billion, the James Cameron franchise starter is yet to be beaten – Avatar is a name that is widely known around the film industry, even if it tends to evoke a mixture of groans and adulation.

Truth be told, there are those who believe Cameron’s fantastical sci-fi is the textbook example of an over-achiever, and that Avatar simply rode the wave of 3D surcharges all the way to box office stardom back in 2009. Nevertheless, its historic feat has resulted in the announcement of not one, not two, but four full-blown sequels, beginning with the launch of Avatar 2 in December of 2020. They’re now in “full-tilt” production, according to James Cameron, who attributes the ten-year wait to mapping out the franchise’s overall vision.

It's been eight years since Avatar arrived in theaters and absolutely obliterated box office records. That left many wondering why James Cameron didn't fast track a sequel, but after all of this time, he is finally in production on Avatar 2. Actually, to be more accurate, he's in production on four Avatar sequels that are going to result in a five movie saga that will conclude in 2025. That's a long way off, but the important thing is that the director is in "full-tilt" production on the sequels as we speak. It is really happening.
