Getting spoofed is the ultimate compliment for a movie or genre because it means it was something worth making fun of. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, parodies are an absolute love letter to the source material, especially when it comes to sci-fi films that tend to have persnickety fans.
Horror, rom-coms, and disaster films have all had send-ups, but the sci-fi ones land the best because they come from a place of deep respect. It is impossible to successfully spoof something if there is disdain for it. The best sci-fi parodies were made by fans to show appreciation for the films that make it such a special genre.

Having isolated a film enthusiast on a North Sea lighthouse island in 2021, this year’s Göteborg Film Festival, Scandinavia’s biggest movie-tv event, looks set to stage another bold metaphor for film consumption, subjecting audiences at three different movie screenings to mass hypnosis.

Actor and recording artist Vanessa Williams, drag queen luminary Trixie Mattel, pop music star Leona Lewis and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” perennial Michelle Visage have joined the judging panel for “Queen of the Universe,” the Paramount Plus reality competition show showcasing a global cast of drag queens singing — not lip-syncing — for the crown.
All four judges have extensive experience in the worlds of music, drag, and reality TV competitions. Williams, a former Miss America, has earned multiple Grammy and Emmy nominations and was a contestant on “RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race” in 2020. Mattel, who won Season 3 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars,” has released multiple chart-topping studio albums. Lewis, who won the UK version of “The X Factor” in 2006, was a guest judge on the German drag competition series “Queen of Drags” in 2019. Condragulations are in order for Irish presenter Graham Norton, who’s set to host “Queen of the Universe,” a new unscripted international drag queen singing competition, Variety can reveal.
Produced by “RuPaul’s Drag Race” producers World of Wonder, the Eurovision-style series finds countries going head to head with their top drag queens putting their real singing voices to the test (no lip synching here!).
Early promotional materials for the show teased: “High heels, high octaves, high competition — this drag queen singing competition will blow your wig off.” Interestingly, drag has been a recurring sight on the Eurovision stage, with Austria’s Conchita Wurst taking the crown in 2014 with her song “Rise Like a Phoenix.”
Norton, the beloved host of long-running, star-studded talk show “The Graham Norton Show,” is no stranger to the “Drag Race” world, having judged the BBC’s enormously successful “RuPaul’s Drag Race U.K.” alongside RuPaul,...

Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer for Shirin Neshat and Shoja Azari’s satirical, surrealistic film “Land of Dreams,” which opens the Horizons Extra section of the Venice Film Festival. The filmmakers won the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival for their first feature film, “Women Without Men.”
“Land of Dreams” stars Sheila Vand, Matt Dillon, William Moseley and Isabella Rossellini. Beta Cinema has sales rights worldwide, except for the U.S., which is being handled by UTA.
The screenplay is by the late Jean-Claude Carrière and Azari. Carrière, who died earlier this year, was Luis Buñuel’s screenwriting partner on six of Buñuel’s films. Season 6 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” will premiere on Paramount Plus on June 24, the streamer announced on Wednesday, along with the official announcement of the season’s cast of competing queens.
Last year, ViacomCBS initially announced that Season 5 of “All Stars” would premiere on the company’s subscriber-based pay cable network Showtime, but then reversed its decision three months later, putting the season back on VH1 in the wake of the pandemic — and a wave of criticism by fans frustrated at having to pay for Showtime to see the series. This year, however, ViacomCBS didn’t flinch; the company is sticking to its previously announced plans to premiere “All Stars” on the subscriber-based Paramount Plus, part of a larger strategy to double down on reality offerings on the streamer.

Paramount+ is set to arrive on March 4, and the updated streaming service has a huge lineup of upcoming original shows to get excited about. Where its predecessor, the narrower CBS All Access, only had a handful of original shows, the new Paramount+ intends to host dozens of new shows, taking advantage of the full ViacomCBS-owned library.
So what's in the pipeline for Paramount+? At launch, the platform certainly won't have all these titles, but there are plenty of exciting projects currently in development or in production. You'll be able to catch revivals of your favorite comedies, dramas, and reality shows, as well as spinoffs of popular franchises, new shows inspired by classic movies, and totally original titles just getting started. Here's a complete rundown of everything that's been announced for Paramount+ so far:

After months of buildup, ViacomCBS next week is set to flip the switch for Paramount Plus — its bulked-up streaming platform engineered to throw bigger elbows in an increasingly crowded market.
For now, the pricing won’t change. But this summer, the media conglomerate will lower the entry-level price for Paramount Plus, the new name of the rebranded CBS All Access.
The base, ad-supported tier of Paramount Plus, launching in June, will cost $4.99 per month — a dollar less than the current entry-level CBS All Access package with commercials. The full Paramount Plus premium tier with no ads (except in live programming) will be the same, at $9.99 per month.
There’s an important caveat, though: The $5 monthly plan for Paramount Plus, while it will include live sports including NFL games, will exclude local CBS stations. In June, the previous $5.99/month plan will be discontinued, but ViacomCBS said existing subscribers will not be...

MTV Entertainment Group unveiled its slate of unscripted programming for Paramount+ at ViacomCBS’ investor day on Wednesday, including “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” making the jump from VH1 and revivals of classic franchises “The Real World” and “Road Rules.”

In Hollywood, Zsa Zsa Gabor is considered one of the first celebrities who was famous for being famous. But a new biography about the late Hungarian-born socialite and her famous family, Finding Zsa Zsa: The Gabors Behind the Legend by Sam Staggs, argues that there was more to Zsa Zsa than her numerous husbands, diamonds and sassy quips.
Staggs, a Hollywood biographer and family friend of the Gabor’s, delves into Zsa Zsa’s private life and gives an inside look at some of her most headline-worthy scandals, from the implosion of her marriage to hotelier Conrad Hilton, to her stint in a sanitarium.

Laurie Mitchell, who portrayed the villainess who faces off against Zsa Zsa Gabor on the planet Venus in the campy 1958 sci-fi classic Queen of Outer Space, has died. She was 90.
Mitchell died Thursday of natural causes at a long-term care facility in Perris, California, author and horror/sci-fi movie aficionado Tom Weaver reported.

“I hate her! I hate dat qveen!” Despite being one of the most maladroit sci-fiers of the ’50s, color and ‘scope and Zsa Za Gabor’s hilarious accent make this Allied Artists offering a must-see head scratcher. Bad taste! Tacky art direction! Infantile sexist humor! The word on the street is that the Me Too movement has this embarrassing howler on their kill list.

Perched at the tip-top of Hollywood’s box office charts – at $2.78 billion, the James Cameron franchise starter is yet to be beaten – Avatar is a name that is widely known around the film industry, even if it tends to evoke a mixture of groans and adulation.
Truth be told, there are those who believe Cameron’s fantastical sci-fi is the textbook example of an over-achiever, and that Avatar simply rode the wave of 3D surcharges all the way to box office stardom back in 2009. Nevertheless, its historic feat has resulted in the announcement of not one, not two, but four full-blown sequels, beginning with the launch of Avatar 2 in December of 2020. They’re now in “full-tilt” production, according to James Cameron, who attributes the ten-year wait to mapping out the franchise’s overall vision.

It's been eight years since Avatar arrived in theaters and absolutely obliterated box office records. That left many wondering why James Cameron didn't fast track a sequel, but after all of this time, he is finally in production on Avatar 2. Actually, to be more accurate, he's in production on four Avatar sequels that are going to result in a five movie saga that will conclude in 2025. That's a long way off, but the important thing is that the director is in "full-tilt" production on the sequels as we speak. It is really happening.
The director recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly in honor of the upcoming 3D release of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, a movie that proves James Cameron really knows how to make a great sequel. So even if you didn't love the first Avatar, we have reason to think Avatar 2 could be extra awesome. He's hard at...
