It's been a while since one can be super excited about a new Atom Egoyan film. His last two, Devil's Knot, a film about the West Memphis Three case, and Captive, a chilly thriller about a child sex ring, found few champions. It's all the more reason to applaud Remember, a return to form of sorts that echoes the handheld looseness of Egoyan's earliest films like Next of Kin. The key to the enjoyment lies in a compelling turn by Christopher Plummer playing a man with dementia who's sent off to hunt down a Nazi commander of Auschwitz. Playing out like an extended road movie, the film is sentimental without being trite. Along the way the film explores issues of loss intertwined with the human...

Over the last several decades, Atom Egoyan has established himself as one of the most lauded Canadian filmmakers. From 1982's Next of Kin, to his success in the 1990s with Exotica and The Sweet Hereafter, through to last year’s The Devil’s Knot, his films often deal with the loss of a child, and the toil this has on the parents as they find various ways of grieving.

★★☆☆☆From Canadian Atom Egoyan (Next of Kin, The Sweet Hereafter), The Captive (2014) is a troubling abduction thriller set in the frozen Ontario wastes. Buried star Ryan Reynolds plays Matthew, a father who, on leaving his nine-year-old daughter Cass (Alexia Fast) in his pickup while he pops into a store to grab some pie for dinner, comes back to find her missing. Every parent's worst nightmare ensues. The police prove suspicious of him and rather than leaping into action, quiz Matthew about his version of events. Wife Tina (Mireille Enos) immediately blames him for leaving her alone. Meanwhile, Rosario Dawson's inspector Nicole receives a new recruit in the form of detective Jeffrey (Scott Speedman).

Cannes -- It's hard to know where to start when analyzing what went wrong with a film as preposterous and phony as Atom Egoyan's "The Captive," a kidnapping drama that kicked off the first Friday of this year's Cannes Film Festival. Egoyan is a frustrating filmmaker these days. In the early part of his career, his work was distinguished by a chilly, clinical style and a fascination with perspective. "Next Of Kin," "Family Viewing," and "Speaking Parts" all displayed enormous promise, and he hit his stride with films like "Exotica" and "The Sweet Hereafter." Lately, though, his films feel half-baked, increasingly distanced from any recognizable human behavior, and with "Devil's Knot," his dramatic take on the story of the West Memphis Three, it felt to me like he'd gone completely off the rails as a storyteller. I couldn't even figure out what point he thought he was making with...

Welcome back to Cannes Check, In Contention's annual preview of the films in Competition at next month's Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 14. Taking on different selections every day, we'll be examining what they're about, who's involved and what their chances are of snagging an award from Jane Campion's jury. Next up, the third Canadian director in the lineup: Atom Egoyan's "The Captive." The director: Atom Egoyan (Canadian, 53 years old). There was a time when Egoyan looked to be as estimable a festival fixture as his compatriot David Cronenberg, but his career hasn't moved in the direction many thought it would after he won big at Cannes (and scooped a surprise Best Director Oscar nod) for 1997's critical peak “The Sweet Hereafter.” Born in Cairo to Armenian-Egyptian parents – a heritage he'd later explore in his 2002 film “Ararat” – Egoyan largely grew up in British Columbia and studied...

★★★★☆ Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan has explored a wealth of recurring motifs throughout his career thus far. These include repeated inspections of identity, performance and voyeurism amidst wider contexts such as familial anxiety and immigration. The first flex of his distinct voice can be found in his more than capable feature debut, Next of Kin (1984), which is now rereleased on UK DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of Artificial Eye. In little over an hour he manages to address many of the elements that would define his later work and create a compelling piece of cinema, though it will not be to all tastes.
Renowned for his dispassionate characters, his first protagonist was a prime example. Peter (Patrick Tierney) is a young man emotionally disconnected from his endlessly arguing parents and without any direction in life. Having developed a coping mechanism in which he pretends to be other people, said folks attempt to...

Atom Egoyan has been invited to Sundance as a filmmaker Next of Kin (Sundance ’87), Exotica (Sundance ’95), producer, juror and the list goes on, but the chances are less than likely that he shows up with his latest — as it comes across more like a Tiff, award season title. So why include a completed project that has long been in the works and whose relevance might be in question because of the intense film treatments it has received from the docu world with the Paradise Lost trilogy and West of Memphis? Simple. I’m thinking that the pro-active fest would want a narrative feature that not only continues this discussion but might contribute to the current aftermath a la The Thin Blue Line. Devil’s Knot has heavyweights Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth are joined by Alessandro Nivola, Amy Ryan, Matt Letscher, Michael Gladis, Stephen Moyer, Rex Linn and Bruce Greenwood.

Hometown boy Atom Egoyan hasn't world premiered one of his film in Toronto in 25 years, back when his debut Next of Kin launched one of Canadian cinema's most illustrious (if spotty) careers in 1984. So it's fitting and truly refreshing that his return home Sunday for Chloe also represented a return to form -- an engrossing, suspenseful, brilliantly acted melodrama loaded with surprises and risks. And that's not even counting the part where Julianne Moore and Amanda Seyfried wind up in bed.
