Last year, Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Wes Craven-directed classic A Nightmare on Elm Street by giving the film a 4K Uhd release. There have been rumblings that they’re planning to follow up that release with a Nightmare on Elm Street franchise 4K Uhd box set sometime this year – and while such a set hasn’t been officially announced, there are promising signs that it’s actually happening. Six months ago, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare director Rachel Talalay revealed on social media that she had been working on “regrading” that film. Now, A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge director Jack Sholder has confirmed that he’s working on a 4K remaster of his movie as well!
Sholder wrote on Facebook, “I just spent last week on the Warners lot working on the restoration of Nightmare on Elm Street...

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and a new 4K restoration is in the works under the supervision of director Jack Sholder.
“I just spent last week on the Warners lot working on the restoration of Nightmare on Elm Street 2. The remastered 4K picture off the original 35mm negative looks fantastic, and I was able to make adjustments and corrections only possible thanks to the incredible digital tools now available,” the filmmaker wrote on Facebook.
“The original mono mix from 42 years ago was brought into Dolby Atmos and blew me out of my seat. I heard things in Chris Young’s score I never knew were there and that, combined with some added sound fx work, really lift the film into another dimension. We were careful not to change the look and feel of the film, but even the rather lame scene...

Horror films have long been a powerful vehicle for social commentary, offering audiences a way to process real-world fears through allegory. While many viewers are drawn to the genre for its thrills, gore, and suspense, horror has historically aligned itself with marginalized voices -- LGBTQ+ communities, people of color, and other oppressed groups -- who often see their struggles reflected in these dark narratives. The genre thrives on pushing boundaries, confronting the anxieties of its time, and creating a space where uncomfortable truths can be explored in ways that mainstream media often avoids.
This is especially true in the realm of zombie horror. From George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead in 1968 to more contemporary works like 28 Days Later in 2002, zombie films have repeatedly served as covert metaphors for societal issues, addressing themes of racism, xenophobia, imperialism, and systemic violence. At the height of the civil rights movement,...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"Every studio rejected it." These are the words of the late horror master Wes Craven, speaking in a 2014 oral history with Vulture regarding his 1984 cinematic classic "A Nightmare on Elm Street." It's difficult to imagine the horror genre -- if not broader pop culture -- without Freddy Krueger in it, but it was, indeed, a Herculean task getting this now-classic horror movie made. "I have the rejection letter from Universal framed on my office wall," Craven added.
What's perhaps most amazing of all is that this wasn't even Craven's first film. The man that would eventually go on to save the slasher in the '90s with "Scream" already had "Last House on the Left" and "The Hills Have Eyes" on his resume,...

Way back in March of 1927, famed writer Hp Lovecraft wrote the science-fiction/horror short story The Colour Out of Space. In the story, a meteorite crashes in the fictional town of Arkham, Massachusetts. Fifty years later, the people who lived there suffered greatly. Their crops grow bountiful but rotten on the inside, their animals become mutated, and eventually, they themselves are driven to insanity and death. Not only was this Lovecraft’s favorite personal short story but would become one of his most well-regarded works. Sixty years later, in 1987, a film based on Lovecraft’s short story went into production under the title The Farm. What would follow was the financial failure of a movie with stories behind the scenes more grotesque than its monsters. Yet, it still somehow spawned three even more unheard-of and totally unconnected sequels. This is the story of What the F*ck Happened to The Curse?...

What are the defining traits of a character actor? Why is a shapeshifting virtuoso like Daniel Day-Lewis considered a full-blown movie star, while a chameleon-like genius like Giancarlo Esposito is routinely relegated to supporting player status? As previously discussed here at /Film, there are multiple factors at play: box office, deeply ingrained cultural notions of physical attractiveness, distinctive utility, and the Borgnine Paradox.
It should come as no surprise that my solo endeavor to arrive at a solid-ish definition of "character actor" is not the first in the history of the written word. There have been many, many attempts by whole groups of esteemed journalists to get at some kind of reasonable understanding of this term/concept, and, having read more than a few of them, I can assure you that there is no hard-fast rule. You could call just about everyone outside of Britney Spears a character actor --...

A movie doesn’t have to be good for it to be Good. Better yet, it doesn’t have to be good for it to be meaningful.
For many, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge is more than a so-bad-it’s-good rewatch; it’s a film to rally around for its gay subtext (and just plain text). Though it was widely panned at its 1985 release, Freddy’s Revenge has since found a vocal audience in the queer community that celebrates much of what it was initially criticized for.

A new breed of creature-features was unleashed in the 1990s and continued well into the next decade. Shaking off the ecological messaging of the past, these monsters existed for the sake of pure mayhem. Just to name a few: Tremors, The Relic, Anaconda, Godzilla, Deep Rising and Lake Placid all showcased this trend of irreverent creature chaos. Reptiles and other scaly beasts proved to be a popular source of inspiration for these films, but for that extra crawly experience, bugs were the best and quickest route. Spiders, in particular, led some of the worst infestations on screen in the early 2000s. And on the underbelly of this creeping new wave — specifically the direct-to-video sector — hangs an overlooked offering of spider horror: Arachnid.
In 2000, Brian Yuzna and Julio Fernández launched the Spanish production company Fantastic Factory. The Filmax banner’s objective was to create modestly budgeted genre films for international distribution.

‘Drag Me to Hell’ – New Australian Blu-ray Celebrates 15 Years of Sam Raimi’s Horror Return [Review]
Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.
Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

The legendary composer is back here in 2024 with Christopher Young’s Nosferatu – A Symphony of Horror, taking to Kickstarter to fan fund a Double CD release of his own award-winning orchestral score for the 1922 horror classic directed by F.W. Murnau.
The Kickstarter campaign previews, “In 2022, Christopher Young was engaged by Europäische FilmPhilharmonie to compose original music for the film in celebration of its 100th anniversary…the results were spectacular. Inspired by the story’s gothic DNA, Young composed what can only be described as a dramatic, visceral, and utterly terrifying response to the...

Final boys in horror movies deserve more attention and recognition. Franchises often build on the primary final boy character to create depth and tension in sequels. Examples of iconic final boys include Ash Williams and Cole, who take on heroic roles in fighting evil.
Final girls in horror movies are a trope of the genre, but the much less common final boy has proven to be an equally interesting concept that deserves more attention. Horror movies are full of tropes, with jump scares, thunder and lightning at night, and characters separating to look for trouble, but changing the tropes sometimes leads to fascinating stories. The final girl trope is a time-honored tradition, and it has led to some of the most iconic characters in cinema, like Laurie Strode in the Halloween films and Sidney Prescott in Scream.

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

inst.mp: Some movie franchises have successfully revived themselves after weak installments, leading to popular movies in the franchise. Reboots, remakes, and traditional sequels have all proven effective in bringing dead IPs back to life. Franchises like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Star Wars, and Mission: Impossible have all experienced upswings in quality after disappointing entries.
Despite weak installments, including major box office failures, some movie franchises have managed to bounce back and retain their original popularity. Movie sagas can sometimes continue longer than they arguably should, which often leads to disappointing installments. However, sometimes not giving up on an IP has led to some of the best movies in the franchise, from superhero sagas like Batman to the ever-expanding Fast and Furious timeline.

The A Nightmare on Elm Street series started with a bang and ended with a whimper. Created, written, and directed by seminal horror visionary Wes Craven in 1984, the Nightmare series arguably peaked with the third installment, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, a film where Craven returned to the director's chair after abstaining from A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge. But the fourth installment, 1988's A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (directed by Renny Harlin), hadn’t lost the plot. It introduced a fantastic set of new characters and continued to return Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) to his original status as a horrifying force of demonic nature instead of a dispenser of equally horrifying puns. The Dream Master generated the best box office of any Nightmare film at the time, grossing $49.3M worldwide.

Robert Englund is more than just a horror actor, as he has appeared in a variety of genres including dramas, thrillers, action movies, comedies, and even musical films. The Adventures of Ford Fairlane is an action comedy with a film noir mystery twist, and while it may be loud and nasty, comedian Andrew Dice Clay's entertaining performance makes it worth watching for fans of crude humor. A Nightmare on Elm Street remains Englund's best film, showcasing his chilling performance as Freddy Krueger and cementing him as a horror icon. It is genuinely terrifying and grossed over $25 million worldwide.
Robert Englund is best known for his role as Freddy Krueger in the supernatural slasher franchise Nightmare on Elm Street, and the movies from that series dominate the list of his highest-grossing films. However, Englund has had a surprising amount of box office successes outside his most famous slasher film franchise.

Many horror movies contain subtle LGBTQ+ subtext and themes, even before explicit representation was accepted. The horror movie monster has often been used as a metaphor for LGBTQ+ people, exploring the fear and misunderstanding they face in society. LGBTQ+ themes can be found in horror movies dating back to the early 1900s, with varying degrees of subtlety and representation.
Numerous horror movies are littered with subtle LGBTQ+ subtext and themes. While there are many brilliant contemporary examples of LGBTQ+ inclusive horror movies, this representation wasn't always so outright within the films' stories. In the decades before explicit representation of non-heteronormative characters was accepted, filmmakers often coded characters as LGBTQ+ with more subtle themes and details. As a result, many horror films with purportedly heterosexual characters are widely recognized as containing LGBTQ+ subtext.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge character Jesse has been recreated as a Bull Airs shoe
A couple weeks ago, the shoe company Bull Airs revealed that they had created a shoe that was designed to look like the Blade character from the Puppet Master franchise. (You can take a look at that shoe Here.) Now they have unveiled a new collection of items that are inspired by the Jesse character from A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (watch it Here)! This includes the button-up shirt Jesse was wearing during his famous bedroom dance scene, a Freddy-slashed recreation of the hat he wears in the same scene, and… best of all… a shoe that is designed to look like Jesse in that scene, featuring a mixture of his shirt, his jeans, and Freddy’s sweater. Images of the shoe can be seen at the bottom of this article, and more can be found on the Bull Airs website.

The Original Screen-Worn Freddy Glove from the Original ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ Is Up for Auction!
The original Freddy Krueger glove armour – seen in Wes Craven’s horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street – has been located and put up for auction by Propstore this week.
This prop has been screen-matched, meaning Propstore was able to verify that it’s the very same metal glove armour and razor blade fingers worn by Robert Englund in the original Nightmare on Elm Street! What do they mean by “glove armour,” you might be wondering?
Propstore notes, “Replica rings have been lightly tacked into the finger interiors to allow the metalwork to be displayed on a replica leather work glove, as the original leather glove is no longer present.”
Propstore describes the one-of-a-kind prop as follows: “Freddy Krueger’s (Robert Englund) screen-matched hero metal glove armour and razor blade fingers, with an original hand-drawn design schematic, from Wes Craven’s original A Nightmare on Elm Street and Jack Sholder...

The horror genre thrives upon cautionary tales where arrogant individuals believe that they can outsmart some supernatural force for their own gain. It’s for this reason that the greed-quenching Djinn and parables where people learn to be careful what they wish for, usually in the most morbid ways possible, are popular horror tropes. Djinn are a fascinating concept, but they’ve struggled to truly make their mark in cinema between largely-forgettable films like Jinn, The Djinn, Wish Upon, and even George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. But Djinn stories can still be fun and effective in the right context. And Robert Kurtzman’s Wishmaster is still the premier djinn horror film over 25 years later.
Wishmaster is a movie that understands the unabashed joys of a big, dumb plot where there’s a giant magical gemstone that’s the key to the Djinn’s powers because why the hell not?...

Horror cinema has strong ties to the LGBTQ+ community in both positive and negative ways. Queer audiences have flocked to the genre, both in spite of and because the genre has historically featured queer-coded villains, such as with the gender nonconformity of Psycho's Norman Bates or the seductive menace of Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge.

People may be surprised to learn that staying out of the ocean won’t guarantee their safety from sharks. In fact, a dip in a river or pond could lead to an encounter with one of the most aggressive sharks in the world: the bull shark. Strangely enough, though, the Carcharhinus leucas doesn’t show up in sharksploitation movies anywhere near as much as its larger and more popular cousin, the great white. Many don’t even know of its existence until they hear of a sighting or attack in an unlikely place.
Jaws led to great whites becoming the face of shark horror. Of course, there are exceptions — Deep Blue Sea features bio-engineered mako sharks, and Syfy went through a period of unleashing one variety of mutant shark after another — yet as a whole, sharksploitation prefers great whites. Then in 2003, TBS Superstation mixed things up by having a bull...

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

Mark Patton has a brilliant idea on how the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise should continue. Patton starred alongside Kim Myers in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, which made a profit at the box office but was widely panned upon release. Patton’s poor treatment behind the scenes and the inappropriate comedic use of homoerotic sub-text forced the actor to leave Hollywood for nearly three decades, but he is slowly making a comeback. Freddy’s Revenge is also now more widely appreciated today than it was during the transphobic times of the '80s.
When asked by Screen Rant at Mad Monster Party Arizona if he would consider returning to the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Patton confirmed that he would and also gave an idea of how Freddy Krueger could return. The actor stated that he thinks Ryan Murphy should be hired and give Freddy...

In the modern era of legacy sequels, you can count in Mark Patton and Kim Myers of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge if a new legacy sequel is made for the Elm Street franchise.
In the first sequel to A Nightmare on Elm Street, Mark Patton played Jesse Walsh, a teenager who starts having nightmares about Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) after moving into a new home on Elm Street in Springwood, Ohio. Kim Myers also starred as Lisa Webber, one of Jesse's best friends. Per ScreenRant, Patton and Myers were present for a panel at the Mad Monster Party Arizona convention, and they were asked if they'd be interested in potentially revisiting their roles in a legacy sequel, even for quick cameo appearances. As it turns out, the actors wouldn't need to be asked twice.

Don’t fall asleep! Nearly 40 years have passed since Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) returned to cinemas as the infamous dream slayer in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985). The first sequel to the late Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) picks up five years after the seminal film takes place in the story's timeline. But instead of pursuing Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), Freddy now terrorizes the dreams of Jesse (Mark Patton) and his love interest Lisa (Kim Myers), and both actors are more than ready to sign on for another shot at Mr. Krueger.
Myers said in an exclusive interview with Screen Rant at the Mad Monster Party:
I absolutely would. I wouldn’t have felt that way a few years ago, but I think seeing, feeling the impact of our film and these films on the people who support them like you guys, it’s amazing.

Two of the stars from A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge want to return for another film in the horror franchise. After the booming success of Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, New Line Cinema immediately started work on a sequel. Freddy’s Revenge, despite being a commercial success, received mixed to negative reviews upon release, partly because of the Elm Street sequel's obvious homoerotic subtext. In recent years, however, the film has become a bit of a cult classic in the horror and LGBTQ+ communities.
During a panel at Mad Monster Party Arizona, two of the films' stars, Kim Myers and Mark Patton, were asked by Screen Rant if they would return for a future movie, even if it was in a cameo capacity. Both seemed overly enthusiastic about reprising their roles of Lisa and Jesse, with Patton making it clear he fully expects the franchise to continue.

Englund portrayed the villain throughout most of the franchise, last appearing in the 2003 crossover film Freddy vs. Jason. Each installment followed those tormented by Krueger, the spirit of a former serial killer capable of reaching his victims in their dreams. His burned appearance and bladed glove makes him one of the more recognizable characters in the horror genre.

With that said, Englund isn't opposed to seeing the franchise continue. In a new interview with ComicBook.com, the actor even pitched his idea on how to next reboot the series. Given how much fans adore the third installment of the franchise, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors...

Ahead of the film's release on the Screambox streaming platform and VOD, I was honored to speak with Englund about the staying power of Freddy Krueger and how one becomes a horror icon. I wore a yellow button-up with black crosses on it,...
