Review by Roger Carpenter
Back in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s I was (over)active on the bootleg video circuit. One of the directors I discovered in my dealings with other collectors was Jim Van Bebber. His Deadbeat at Dawn was a legend almost immediately after it was released, and his reputation was solidified by a handful of short films which traumatized heretofore steel-bellied horror movie viewers. Even in slightly blurry, multi-generational bootleg copies, his films carried a wallop not felt very often. They were energetic, raw, no-holds-barred and outrageously gory. They had to be seen to be believed.
Fast-forward to the present and Van Bebber is one of a handful of Diy film mavericks, along with Bill Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Sam Raimi, Buddy Giovinazzo and their ilk, now revered for their hardcore 80’s output. But of this group, perhaps Van Bebber stands just a little taller for his extreme persistence.

To celebrate the release of Deadbeat at Dawn – out on Blu-ray 22nd October from Arrow Video – we are giving away a copy!
The absolute definition of Diy filmmaking, Jim VanBebber’s notorious, blood-drenched cult classic rises again on the advent of its 30th anniversary, newly restored for the first time on Blu-ray. Locked and loaded with a raft of new extras, see Deadbeat as you’ve never seen it before – in all its head-busting, bone-crushing glory.
Written by, directed by and starring VanBebber, Deadbeat follows the story of Goose – a gang leader whose girlfriend is brutally slaughtered when he attempts to leave the thug life behind. Pulled back into the gang, who’ve now formed an uneasy alliance with the thugs that butchered his girl, Goose sees an opportunity to exact his brutal, deadly revenge.

We have officially entered fall which means it’s finally time to get those Halloween decorations up to the scare the neighbors and enjoy pumpkin spice variations of your favorite treats. More importantly, it’s that time of year when you gather ’round the television with your closest friends and watch the spookiest of movies… and what better way than with the latest releases from Arrow Video (Us).
For those looking to stay in the horror realm without watching only horror, then perhaps it’s best you start with Schlock from John Landis and hitting Blu-ray on October 16th. This raucous comedy pays loving tribute to monster movies of the past as it follows a prehistoric ape named Shlock on a rampage throughout southern California. This genre mashup launched the career of Landis and makeup effects wizard Rick Baker and now it will finally have a proper home video release.

In 1993, after not being accepted into any major film festival of the time, such as Sundance, filmmaker Todd Phillips personally toured the U.S. and Europe with his first documentary film, Hated: Gg Allin & The Murder Junkies. Following this experience, Phillips partnered up with fellow filmmaker Andrew Gurland to launch several initiatives to help small, challenging and often controversial films connect with audiences.
One of those initiatives was the first ever New York Underground Film and Video Festival, which was held at the Anthology Film Archives in New York City on March 18-20, 1994.
The term “underground film” was first used to describe the experimental film scene in 1961 by filmmaker and film theorist Stan Vanderbeek. Using “underground film” to describe the avant-garde cinema remained popular throughout the ’60s, then lost popularity in the ’70s as terms like “structural film” came into existence. “Underground film” ultimately regained some of its mojo...

Shock talks to the director of Jim Vanbebber documentary Diary Of A Deadbeat. For every fan of independent filmmaking, the name Jim Vanbebber isn’t a new one. The Ohio-born legend of underground cinema is probably best-known for his 1980s action flick Deadbeat At Dawn and his mind-fuck follow-up based on the real-life slaying of actress…

If you want The Manson Family on Blu-Ray or via the Blu-Ray/DVD Combo, today is your last chance.
Last night, Severin Films posted via their Facebook page that they would be destroying all non-sold copies of The Manson Family on Blu-Ray. The reasoning is pretty clear on their post, which I have embedded below.
Post by Severin Films.
In the post, Severin talks about the director, Jim VanBebber slandering the company. This isn’t the first time many of you have heard about VanBebber having disagreements with companies releasing his films or weird interviews that he has given. You may have heard the voicemails messages that were left for Don May, Jr. from Synapse Films regarding the transfer of Deadbeat at Dawn.
Regardless, if you want the film on Blu-Ray, today is the last day to buy it from Severin’s website before they destroy all the remaining inventory.

Christmas is a time for feel-good movies. It’s a Wonderful Life, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and the usual Hallmark Hall of Fame drivel that hits the airwaves every December. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the mainstream Christmas classics as much as the next guy. But at night, when my family is all snug in their beds, that’s when I drag out my sick and twisted Christmas collection…
Black Christmas, Christmas Evil, Silent Night Deadly Night, Don’t Open Till Christmas, those are the films I like to cuddle up to with a spiked eggnog. What is my favorite? That’s a difficult question. I love them all for different reasons, but if I had to pick one, I would have to pick a recent import from Finland called Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. A modern mashup of The Thing and the Krampus mythology, it is...

A true grindhouse maverick who hates happy endings, Jim VanBebber has made a name for himself in the world of low-budget, independent exploitation cinema as a writer/director and sometimes actor.
Since his first feature, Deadbeat at Dawn (1988), his gritty, outlaw style of filmmaking has generated films that are unapologetic in their realism and singular in their vision.
In 2004 VanBebber took on Charlie Manson. Shot over four years, The Manson Family is a documentary-style (though semi-fictional) look at the Manson cult filled with lurid sex, shocking violence and murderous flower power. For its 10th anniversary The Manson Family is being unleashed nationwide complete with VanBebber's Kickstarter-fueled short Gator Green (get theater listings here). A special edition Blu-ray release will follow on May 7th by Severin Films, which will include the short and a documentary on the making of The Manson Family, entitled The VanBebber Family.
