Matchstick Men is an unusual addition to Ridley Scott’s celebrated filmography. While primarily known for his lavish, large-scale blockbusters, Scott’s been known to pivot to other genres when least expected. In the early 2000s, he was amid an incredible career comeback. First bursting onto the scene with the one-two punch of Alien and Blade Runner, Scott had suffered a long run of flops following his 1991 blockbuster Thelma & Louise. Movies like 1492: Conquest of Paradise, White Squall and G.I. Jane lost a lot of money, but when he made Gladiator in 2000, he was back – big time. He followed that movie up with two major blockbusters, Hannibal and Black Hawk Down, but then, in 2003, he opted to make a small-scale comedy-drama called Matchstick Men, which paired him with Nicolas Cage.
In it, Cage plays a small-time con man named Roy Waller, who suffers from Tourette syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

“Gladiator II” (Paramount) is expected to gross over $60 million when it open this week in the U.S./Canada. If so, that will be a strong start for Ridley Scott’s 29th feature in his 45-year career.
With a budget reported to be somewhere around $250 million-$300 million, it will need all of that and more. While this may be his fourth film to cost over over $200 million (adjusting to current dollar value), “Gladiator II” appears to be the highest spend of Scott’s career.
It’s also the record expense for a director over 80. Paramount’s decision to entrust Scott clearly speaks to his past performances, particularly internationally.
We surveyed all 28 previous Scott features, calculating their grosses and budgets at 2024 values. And while a $60 million “Gladiator II” opening would be a record on paper, that only works if you don’t adjust his track record to current dollars and ticket prices.

“At my signal, unleash hell.” For those of us that were alive back in the year 2000 and avid movie fans, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator was an event. While historical dramas aren’t especially rare nowadays, back then, they were relatively rare. Sure, there was the occasional Braveheart or Rob Roy, but they weren’t considered a bankable genre. Yet, that all changed when director Ridley Scott, whose career was at a low ebb following the failure of almost every movie he made in the 90s decided to revive the so-called “sword and sandal” genre with a gritty, lavish redux of the historical epic.
In the fifties and sixties, these types of movies were commonplace, although in movies like The Robe or Ben-Hur, they usually told biblical tales. That changed a little with Spartacus, El Cid, and The Fall of the Roman Empire, but before long the genre was considered a...

Ridley Scott entered the new millennium in trouble. Though he directed a pair of sci-fi classics early in his career and hit another peak with Thelma & Louise in 1991, by the end of the ’90s he was coming off a streak of flops: the interminable 1492: Conquest Of Paradise, the largely forgotten White Squall,...

Quick Links What Is 1492: Conquest of Paradise About? 1492's Commercial and Critical Response, Explained Why Ridley Scott Blames European Accents For 1492's Failures
Undoubtedly one of the finest living filmmakers still working today, Ridley Scott is still going strong at age 86. As the four-time Oscar nominee prepares to unleash Gladiator II on the masses in November 2024, Scott has been reflecting on his decorated 60-year career in show business. While all-time great classics like Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, and Black Hawk Down mark Scott's most successful commercial and critical highlights, several movies like 1492: Conquest of Paradise failed to deliver strong box office numbers.
Although several factors always contribute to the financial failure of a film release, Scott claims that 1492 was rejected by American audiences in 1992 because they couldn't understand European accents. Whether true or not, 1492 joins a small subset of titles directed by Scott, such as...

Deep Fear, the low-budget sharks-and-cocaine thriller, was filmed in Malta instead of the Caribbean where it is set. Malta's water SFX facility and tanks served as convincing stand-ins for Caribbean waters. Malta has a long history of being a popular filming location for various movies, including Ridley Scott's films like Gladiator and White Squall. Deep Fear's underwater cinematography was led by Mark Silk, known for his work in James Bond: No Time To Die.
Given the movie's surprising success on Netflix, many viewers are wondering where 2023's Deep Fear was filmed. The low-budget sharks-and-cocaine thriller stars Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick as Jackson, though the film's central protagonist is Madalina Diana Ghenea's Naomi, a world-class yachtswoman. An accomplished seafarer, Naomi sets out on a solo trip to meet Jackson in Grenada. However, in true survival film fashion, Naomi's three-day jaunt takes a dark turn when she's knocked off course by a storm.

Ridley Scott’s career is marked first and foremost by its sheer prolificness. There are very few directors of any age who work frequently enough to have two films coming out the same year. Scott’s done it three times in 2001, 2017, and 2021; and those later two times were when he was past the age of 80.
Since he made his debut with the swashbuckling period drama “The Duellists” in 1977, Scott has been a steady, constant presence at the cinema. His longest break has been two four-year gaps between releases — “1492: Conquest for Paradise” and “White Squall” from 1992 to 1996 and “The Martian” and “All the Money in the World” and “The Last Duel” from 2017 to 2021, the latter gap widened by the pandemic. More frequently, Scott only goes two or even just one year before dropping a new film, resulting in an impressively robust 28 filmography.

Ridley Scott deleted one of Gladiator's most brutal scenes from the final cut. Gladiator marked a major comeback for Scott, who had suffered several duds during the '90s, including 1492: Conquest of Paradise and White Squall. Gladiator is an epic historical drama that reminded audiences what a master storyteller the helmer could be and also featured a star-making performance from Russell. While not strictly an action movie, the battle sequences were also thrillingly staged.
The Ridley Scott movie didn't shy away from the brutality of the era either, from its large bodycount to several gory demises. It would have been tough for Gladiator to do justice to the era it's depicting without making use of its well-earned R-rating; hopefully, Scott's upcoming Gladiator 2 would try to water things down. Scott is famed for his director cuts too, but while Gladiator does have an "extended edition" on home media,...

Gorillaz have released their eighth album, Cracker Island. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify.
Originally announced last August alongside the release of “New Gold” — a mesmerizing single featuring Tame Impala and Bootie Brown — Cracker Island not only augments the band’s canon of inquisitive pop gems, but also shows the animated quartet collaborating with an impressive list of guests, including Bad Bunny, Stevie Nicks, Thundercat, Beck, and more. With these parts combined, the sum of the album is an exciting plunge back into the search for meaning in the modern world.
For their part, the virtual band finds itself in the perfect setting for their search. 2-D, Noodle, Russel Hobbs, and Murdoc Niccals have left their West London home base for new digs in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, where fame-lust, toxic consumerism, and the occult blend together as easily as exhaust fumes and the Angeleno air.

Gorillaz, Cracker Island review: Damon Albarn’s band of apes return with their best album since 2005
“I’m on one per cent, but I’m there with you,” croons 2D on Gorillaz’ most enjoyable album since 2005’s Demon Days. It’s a sentiment that reflects the record’s commitment to finding collective fun in the face of isolating fatigue. Gorillaz have always been an apocalypse party of an act, but now, they’re laughing again. There’s a loose-limbed elation to the indie-funk grooves they find, with guests ranging from Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks to Australian psych-rockers Tame Impala and LA bass-bouncer Thundercat. And a sleepy solidarity in the more melancholy moments, which include a tender acoustic duet with Beck.
Britain’s first virtual band was created in 2001 by Damon Albarn and Tank Girl artist Jamie Hewlett in response to what the earnest indie purists saw as the “manufactured” state of chart music. But over the next two decades, the project has given the Blur...

There are two dials at Gorillaz HQ which determine 1) how many guests will be on an album, and 2) how elaborate its broader cartoon lore will be. 2018’s The Now Now, positioned as a solo album by Damon Albarn’s “2-D” alter ego, had minimal guests and only the slightest bit of extra-textual hijinks. On the other hand, 2020’s wildly overstuffed Song Machine project, in which every track was accompanied by at least one guest and a new cartoon detailing the band’s ongoing dystopian adventures, turned both dials to 11. Every track was a single,...

Gorillaz have linked up with Tame Impala and the Pharcyde’s Bootie Brown for a new song, “New Gold,” that will appear on their next album, Cracker Island, out Feb. 24, 2023, via Warner Records.
“New Gold” is classic Gorillaz, with a psychedelic haze floating over otherwise energetic alt-pop production. After its debut at Sundance in January, where it earned the World Cinema Dramatic Competition award for directing, Ukrainian wartime drama “Klondike” nabbed top honors for best international film at the Chile’s 18th Santiago International Film Festival (Sanfic).
“Klondike,” written, directed and edited by Ukrainian filmmaker Marina Er Gorbach (“Omar and Us”), tells the story of expectant couple Irina and Anatoly who live in the village of Grabove, near the Russia-Ukraine border during the high conflict that coincides with downed Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. The couple faces devastation up-close as Irina refuses to relocate, even as troops close in.
Best director went to Chile’s Roberto Baeza for his documentary effort “Punto de Encuentro,” a gripping portrait of filmmakers striving to recreate the story of their fathers, tortured and imprisoned under the dictatorship.

Jeremy Irons is set to join the A-list ensemble of MGM’s Gucci movie that Ridley Scott is directing. Lady Gaga is attached to star as Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci who was tried and convicted of orchestrating his assassination on the steps of his office in 1995. She served 18 years in jail before being let out in 2016.
Irons joins a cast that includes Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Al Pacino, Jack Huston and Reeve Carney.
It is the first project Lady Gaga has attached herself to since her Best Actress nomination in a breakout turn opposite Bradley Cooper in 2018’s A Star Is Born. She won an Oscar for the song “Shallow,” one of a number of hits on the soundtrack. MGM landed rights to the Gucci package back in April with plans to go into production after Scott finished shooting The Last Duel, which goes back into production next week.

The 1990s were a troubling period for Ridley Scott. After starting off on a high note with the iconic melodrama Thelma & Louise (1991), Scott began a trajectory of high-profile flops, beginning with his Christopher Columbus epic 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992) and ending with G.I. Betwixt these is 1996’s White Squall, a period piece adventure film detailing the tragedy which claimed six lives on the brigantine Albatross when it sank in 1961 during the titular storm.…...

Exclusive: Ridley Scott has committed to direct a film about the tumultuous Gucci family fashion dynasty and the murder of the grandson of founder Guccio Gucci. Lady Gaga is attached to star as Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci, who was tried and convicted of orchestrating her ex-husband’s assassination on the steps of his office in 1995. She served 18 years before being let out of jail in 2016.
It is the first project Lady Gaga has attached herself to since her Best Actress nomination in a breakout turn opposite Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born. She won an Oscar for writing the song Shallow, one of a number of hits on the soundtrack. The combination of actress and director is already starting to draw interest but the first stop will be Fox/Disney, where Scott Free has its first look, and where Scott will next direct The Last Duel,...

Jeff Bridges grew up with show business in his veins. His father, the late Lloyd Bridges, was a gregarious sort who not only loved the making of movies, but the selling of them as well. He would encourage his children to give it a go. “This is a great life,” he would tell them.
Still, like any rebellious kid, the younger Bridges — who will receive the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.’s Cecil B. DeMille Award for career achievement at the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 6 — was resistant to chasing his father’s chosen trade. He wanted to be a musician instead, or an artist. “I had maybe 10 movies under my belt before I thought I could do this for the rest of my life,” he said in 2009.

We are knee-deep into a summer of dreary sequels, kids’ fare, and a few whip-smart outliers. If you’ve already seen the likes of The Beguiled and Baby Driver, perhaps staying home with a book is a better idea than trekking to the cinema. Let’s dive into some worthy film-centric reads.
Wonder Woman: The Art and Making of the Film by Sharon Gosling (Titan Books)
Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman is one of the biggest superhero success stories, and it deserves that designation. The classification makes reading a book like Wonder Woman: The Art and Making of the Film feel like a celebratory affair. After a brief account of the character’s comics history, we delve into designs for Themyscira, concept art of Dr. Maru’s laboratory, and somber depictions of battle. What stands out, however, are drawings and photographs showing the film’s winning costume designs. It is illuminating,...

Late last week, I got a chance to see Ridley Scott’s latest film, the franchise outing Alien: Covenant. A sequel to Prometheus and prequel to Alien, it is still a few weeks out, but 20th Century Fox is clearly feeling bullish about it. You’ll see what think in detail later on this month, but with it fresh in my mind, I wanted to take a look at Scott’s career on the whole. A few years ago I ranked his ten best movies, and I’m going to be doing that again today, just wish an added twist. Scott is fairly prodigious with his outings, so this can be a fairly consistent thing. There’s always some new coals in the fire for him. Before I get to the top ten list, I figured I’d do a full ranking of total filmography, up until those best ones,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger was set to star in I Am Legend, with Ridley Scott directing. We look back at a lost movie...
Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend is one of the greatest vampire novels ever written, and is a noted inspiration on people like Stephen King and George Romero. The book tells the story of Robert Neville, who is seemingly the lone survivor of a plague that turned most of humanity into bloodsucking ghouls. Neville survives nightly attacks by hordes eager for his blood while trying to overcome the crushing loneliness of being the last human left. It’s a book that manages the twin feat of being a great horror story and an achingly sad character study; it’s got a gut-punch of a twist too.
I Am Legend is an inherently cinematic concept, but it hasn’t had a smooth ride on the big screen.

We talk to Ridley Scott about his new film The Martian, his career in film, including Alien and Blade Runner, and his plans for Prometheus.
When we met Ridley Scott in a plush London hotel one September afternoon, the director was relaxed and jovial. And well he should be; his latest film, The Martian, has already garnering glowing notices, and for our money, it's Scott's best film in years. The story of astronaut Mark Watney and his struggles to survive alone and hungry on the hostile surface of Mars, it's full of humour, drama and eye-popping visuals.
As the film opens in the UK, we were lucky enough to talk to Scott about all kinds of movies from his voluminous body of work, including Alien, Blade Runner, Legend, The Counsellor and lots more, all leading up to his plans for the three Prometheus movies he wants to make, and finally,...

USA Network announced a pilot pick-up for the hour-long scripted drama Shooter and has locked in Ryan Phillippe (Secrets & Lies) to star. Shooter is based on the best-selling Bob Lee Swagger novel by Stephen Hunter, Point of Impact, and the 2007 Paramount film starring Mark Wahlberg. The co-production with Paramount Television and Universal Cable Productions comes from executive producers Mark Wahlberg (Boardwalk Empire, Entourage) of Closest to the Hole Productions; Stephen Levinson (Boardwalk Empire, Ballers) of Leverage Entertainment; and Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, The Real O'Neals). John Hlavin (The Shield) wrote the pilot and will also executive produce. Simon Cellan Jones (Ballers) is set to direct the pilot.

David Lascher may be remembered by his fans for his numerous appearances on 90s TV sitcoms, but the actor now comes to Tribeca as a writer/director with a more poignant and personal touch in his family drama "Sister," starring Scott Reid and Barbara Hershey. Currently recurring on "Melissa and Joey" for ABC Family. My writing/producing partner, Todd Camhe, and I wrote the script for "Sister" over 6 years ago. It is a very personal story based on characters and circumstances from my own life. This is the first film I have written and directed and premiering at Tribeca is a dream come true. Iggy Azalea paid tribute to cult teen classic Clueless in her recent music video for 'Fancy'.
The Australian rapper appears as Alicia Silverstone's iconic character Cher in the video, which was released online last week.
As stars continue to be inspired by the movie almost 20 years on, we take a fond look back at the cast and what they went on to do after Clueless:
Alicia Silverstone (Cher Horowitz)
Alicia Silverstone played seemingly shallow socialite Cher - famously branded "a virgin who can't drive" and "hymenally challenged" - in the high-school adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma.
Prior to Clueless, Silverstone's credits included ABC comedy-drama The Wonder Years and a number of Aerosmith videos. The film propelled her to further fame, and she went on to star in Joel Schumacher's 1997 movie Batman & Robin, crime-comedy Excess Baggage (1997) with Benicio Del Toro and Christopher Walken, and romantic drama Blast from the Past (1999) opposite Brendan Fraser.

Despite hopping from genre to genre in his career, Ridley Scott has rarely touched upon sports (aside from tangentially in White Squall and Gladiator). That may change if he goes ahead with a new potential project, a still-developing look at the growing controversy around head injuries in American Football. It a hot topic across the pond at the moment, albeit one not limited to the gridiron, as there have been concerns about rugby, hockey and the proper version of football we enjoy in the UK. In the past, head injuries have been largely ignored or hidden in the service of keeping the business side of the sport going, but now the lawsuits are growing as more and more former and current players speak out about the long-term damage they’ve suffered from years of tough collisions. Even more tragically, several formers players who have committed suicide did so with explicit...

Although Ridley Scott’s career may not have as many hits as Speilberg’s or Scorsese’s despite being active for just as long, his work has influenced the art of filmmaking just as much. While Speilberg may have blazed trails with his storytelling and Scorsese with his characters, Ridley Scott made waves due to the sensory impact of his movies on their audiences. Like George Lucas, Scott understood the importance of visual and audio stimulation and how these attributes could be used as impactful film making tools. Award-winning film editor who had an instinctive feel for pace, rhythm and nuance
Gerry Hambling, who has died aged 86, was one of the finest editors that the British film industry has produced. He was widely admired, particularly by his peers, for films such as Midnight Express (1978), Mississippi Burning (1988), In the Name of the Father (1993) and Evita (1996). He won many awards from the editors' guilds in the Us and UK, which made up for the fact that, although he was nominated six times, an Oscar always eluded him. He did, however, win the Bafta three times for film editing. My own collaboration with Gerry went back 40 years, as he cut 14 feature films for me, as well as three short films and scores of commercials.
As with many film technicians of his generation, Gerry's choice of profession was serendipitous: born and raised in Croydon, Surrey, he left school at 16 and went to work at the local factory,...

Due to appealingly hefty tax credits and its wide-ranging choice of locations, Louisiana has served as home to a number of recent high-profile productions, but actor Ryan Phillippe is now set to show the darker side to such regional filmmaking with his directorial debut.

The story follows a has-been actor who is kidnapped while filming his latest project in the Louisiana city. As producer Mark Burg is financing the film under his Twisted Pictures (“Saw”) banner, there is sure to be some subsequent torture and blood-letting to follow, but further plot details are being kept under wraps for now.

Ridley Scott is, in some circles anyhow, a god. Practically treated as royalty with laudatory genuflection from certain film enthusiasts -- generally genre fetishists -- he has turned in two unimpeachable cinema touchstones, "Blade Runner" and "Alien," plus a few other arguable modern semi-classics including "Black Hawk Down" (though as you'll see, not all us here agree with that assessment) and "Gladiator." But his track record overall? Scott's batting average isn't exactly amazing across the board, and while he has major peaks, his work can be frustratingly uneven for someone who is clearly and masterfully talented. While a craftsman of technically marvelous and grand spectacle cinema, his films can also be inordinately soulless and have become increasingly so with each film (Sigourney Weaver famously said that Scott paid more attention to the props and extraterrestrials than the actors on "Alien," but somehow that picture still worked).
And while his latest,...

So, as everyone knows by now, a new trailer for Prometheus is zipping around the internet, and everyone everywhere is reported as being, “full of joy.”
The film, which is directed by Ridley Scott, written by Lost creator Damon Lindelof (and Jon Spaihts – co-writer of last year’s The Darkest Hour), and starring: Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, and Guy Pearce, is coming at you like a certain thumbing of the nose at Oscar-bait films.
As if unable to contain their irritation any longer at the fact that certain directors can make movies about boring subjects, and seem to get nominated for awards even before anyone knows anything about the film, except that at some point certain older actors sit around and have tea – here comes the reply.

With the next trailer for Prometheus only a few days away, Ryan takes a closer look at how Ridley Scott’s anticipated return to sci-fi has been sold so far…
Over the past few days, much has been written about the marketing drive that built up to the release of John Carter. How the earliest trailer, released last July, didn’t have enough impact. How the name change confused people. How the posters failed to truly give a flavour of what the film was about.
I’m certainly not going to rake over all that again here, but the whole debate over the way John Carter has been packaged and sold so far has left me thinking quite a lot about the marketing campaign behind Ridley Scott’s forthcoming Prometheus. By comparison, the marketing of Scott’s ‘definitely not an alien prequel’ has been quite brilliant.

Director Ridley Scott followed up Blade Runner with the fantastical whimsy of Legend. Michael looks back at Scott’s cult fantasy...
Hindsight is a strange gift. Geek history dictates that the 1980s were a heyday for the fantasy genre; however, few of the decade’s sword ‘n sorcery flicks were outright hits, and many barely made a comfortable profit.
