If awesomeness had a face, it would be wearing aviators and chomping on a toothpick – oh, wait, that was just Val Kilmer’s Iceman in Top Gun. As Maverick’s ultimate yet oh-so-charming rival, Iceman is just one of those characters you simply cannot forget. Of course, it also has to do with the fact that it was Val Kilmer himself who brought the iconic role to life. While we love Iceman, did you know that there was a time when the actor did not have any interest in playing him?
That’s right. Val Kilmer turned down the director, Tony Scott, when he first offered him the role. Things worked out for him, and he was soon scaling new heights. Then came Déjà Vu, where he had to beg Tony Scott to hire him for a role.

Colin Donnell is a One Chicago legend. The actor played Dr. Connor Rhodes for four seasons on Chicago Med, and participated in some of the show's most indelible storylines. It's been a long time since fans have gotten to see him walk through the halls of Gaffney Medical Center, but Donnell is very much still part of the franchise family.
This connectivity was evident on Tuesday, April 8. Donnell took to Instagram to pay his respects to Michael Waxman, a former executive producer and director on Chicago Med. Waxman's information is hard to come by online, but Donnell claimed that the television veteran passed away. He also made a point to emphasize how much Waxman played a role in shaping the show we still watch today.

Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe seemingly starred in every other film in the early 2000s. He has become more selective in recent years, so that when he does appear onscreen in a film, it feels like more of an event.
Crowe is one of only a handful of actors to have been Oscar-nominated for a leading role in three consecutive years -- 1999's "The Insider," 2000's "Gladiator" (win) and 2001's "A Beautiful Mind," all of which were also nominated for Best Picture (with "Gladiator" and "A Beautiful Mind" winning). In addition to his latest bids for "The Loudest Voice," he has also been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards and 10 Screen Actors Guild Awards (winning in both cases for "A Beautiful Mind"). The SAG nominations in particular demonstrate the range of Crowe's work, with nominations for his performances in a heavy drama ("The Insider"), a Western ("3:10 to Yuma") and...

Michael Mann is now waiting to hear back from the studio after working on Heat 2 for over a year. Mann has stated that audiences are ready for a new story in the Heat universe. “It’s sustained in culture. It’s known,” Mann said. “I could delude myself into thinking that the whole world is familiar with it, but when you check out its prominence in home video for over 20 years, this thing really has legs. People are still watching it, people are still talking about it. It’s a brand. It’s kind of a Heat universe, in a way. And that certainly justifies a very large ambitious movie.“ It has also been rumored that his Ferrari star, Adam Driver, and Elvis star, Austin Butler, are attached as a young McCauley and Shiherlis, especially as Butler was training at a gun range last year.

For Michael Mann, the detail, focus, and obsession he puts into every frame of his work is, what he believes, should draw viewers in. That being said, when the work is a two hour and forty-five minute biographical drama about a tobacco industry whistleblower, he recognizes the details may in fact be what turns people off.
Speaking in a recent interview with Vulture, Mann shared that his 1999 two-hander between Al Pacino and Russell Crowe, “The Insider,” doesn’t get the appreciation it deserves compared to some of his more popular features like “Heat” and “Ali.” Though the film received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, it was a flop at the box office.
“For myself, that was very challenging,” Mann said of making the film. “It’s a tense psychological drama that takes place in two hours and 45 minutes. The ambition of it is the challenge:...

Michael Mann has long been a filmmaker with an eye for detail. From his early work on Miami Vice to his later films like Collateral and The Insider, Mann explored the impact of work on one's identity through action. Nowhere is this more evident than in Heat, a film that was a turning point not only in Mann’s career but in the crime genre as a whole.
However, what some fans don’t realize is that its roots actually trace back to a lesser-known project – Mann’s 1989 TV film LA Takedown. While the TV movie shares the same cat-and-mouse relationship between a cop and a thief, it was limited by the constraints of TV production, resulting in a more stripped-down and less polished version of the story. What LA Takedown lacked in resources, Heat more than made up for in scale, depth, and precision.

Settle in for a Michael Mann film and you know you’re going to be in capable hands for the next couple of — or few — hours. That’s most definitely the case with one of his longest, 1999’s The Insider. Haven’t seen it? Well Michael Mann would really like you to.
Despite being one of the best films of its year (and a stacked one it was) and garnering seven Oscar nominations, Michael Mann doesn’t quite think enough people have seen The Insider, about a whistleblower who tries to take on the U.S. tobacco industry. “For myself, that was very challenging. It’s a tense psychological drama that takes place in two hours and 45 minutes. The ambition of it is the challenge: Can I engage and deliver the intensity that Jeffrey Wigand and Lowell Bergman lived through? In Lowell Bergman’s case, your life’s work may be trashed,...

I was pretty bummed to read earlier this week that Wings Hauser had passed away. While often written off as a C-level action star thanks to a long line of eighties and nineties direct-to-video flicks, the fact is Hauser was beyond talented, and when he put the effort in, he could be unforgettable. Such was the case when Michael Mann cast him against time as a slimy lawyer for big tobacco in The Insider where, in one ninety-second scene, he and Bruce McGill all but walk away with what, for the rest of the 158-minute running time, is ostensibly a star vehicle for Al Pacino and Russell Crowe.
Such was the power of Wings, who could be great in the right role. I also vividly remember him being terrific as a slimy bounty hunter hired by Luke Perry’s Dylan in an atypically action-packed episode of Beverly Hills 90210, while...

British Royal Family news and updates reveals Queen Camilla is creating challenges for Prince Harry at this time.

The Insider Chatted With Newsweek
An insider revealed to Newsweek that the ongoing tension between Queen Camilla and Prince Harry is the reason they are rarely mentioned together.
This conflict traces back to the events surrounding Megxit, leading to a situation where the media now devotes significantly more attention to the daily activities of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex than was ever the case at the Palace.
For those unfamiliar with their feud, it reportedly began when the Duke claimed in his memoir, Spare, that his stepmother was orchestrating a long-term strategy against him.

Wings Hauser, the versatile character actor known for his intense turns in Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling, Vice Squad and Tough Guys Don’t Dance, has died. He was 77.
Hauser died Saturday at his home in Santa Monica after a long battle with Copd, his daughter, Bright Hauser, told The Hollywood Reporter. She noted that he was using an oxygen tank most recently.
Survivors also include his son, actor Cole Hauser, now playing the fixer Rip Wheeler on Yellowstone.
Hauser had his breakthrough when he starred as a psychopath pimp known as Ramrod in Avco Embassy Pictures’ lurid Vice Squad (1982), directed by horror veteran Gary Sherman. He also sang the theme song for the movie, “Neon Slime.”
Later, he played a racist U.S. Army officer in A Soldier’s Story (1984), directed by Norman Jewison; a cocaine dealer in Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling (1986), starring Richard Pryor; and a...

We have some sad news to share today, as the official Wings Hauser page on social media has revealed that the prolific character actor passed away over the weekend at the age of 77. As the post reads, “Movie icon Wings Hauser took flight in the arms of his film & music partner, Cali Lili Hauser at their studio this weekend.“
Known for having one of the coolest names in cinema history, Wings Hauser was actually born Gerald Dwight Hauser on December 12, 1947. “Wings” was part of a stage name (Wings Livinryte) he used for a 1975 folk music album called Your Love Keeps Me Off the Streets, and he was credited as Wings Livinryte when he appeared on an episode of the TV series Cannon that same year. After that, he moved on to calling himself Wings Hauser.
Hauser made his screen debut with an uncredited appearance in the 1967 film First to Fight.

Russell Crowehas had one of the most interesting careers of any actor working in Hollywood today. While there was an era where his performances in modern classics such as Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Master and Commander: Far Side of the World, and Cinderella Man suggested that he could become one of the greatest actors of all-time, Crowe has spent the last few years making poorly-received genre films; while there may be fans of The Pope’s Exorcist and Unhinged that claim that they are “guilty pleasures,” they certainly don’t compare to the brilliance that Crowe displayed in The Insider and American Gangster. However, there was a brief period in which Crowe would take on these seemingly straightforward genre projects and elevate them into truly thought-provoking pieces of drama. The Next Three Daysis an inventive thriller about the origin of criminality, and gave Crowe the rare opportunity to team up with Liam Neeson.

Three-time Academy Award nominee Russell Crowe is set to headline a new Cold War thriller. The movie is adapted from David E. Hoffman's bestseller, The Billion Dollar Spy: A True Story of Cold War Espionage and Betrayal, which tells a riveting story within the final years of the Cold War based on previously classified CIA documents and interviews. Crowe is best known for his performance as Maximus in Ridley Scott's 2000 Oscar-winner Gladiator.
Per Deadline's report, Billion Dollar Spyhas tapped Crowe and Industry's Harry Lawtey as the lead stars with a script by Ben August and revised by Oscar-winning writer Stephen Gaghan. Amma Asante will direct. In the movie, Crowe plays an ordinary man named Adolf Tolkachev, who is set on a highly dangerous mission to give top-secret Soviet intelligence to the United States. Lawtey will play a CIA agent named Tom Lenihan, who aids Crowe's character in challenging the Soviet government.

“Michael Mann’s “Thief” is a film of style, substance, and violently felt emotion, all wrapped up in one of the most intelligent thrillers I’ve seen.” – Roger Ebert
Glistening wet streets, intense neon lights, transient spaces, reflective objects, cool-blue color palette, and a pulsating score. Yeah, it’s all the recognizable nuggets of Michael Mann’s visual style, which isn’t just about remaining ‘showy’, but also remains wholly attuned to the story’s emotional textures. And, what’s fascinating about these confident and meticulous visuals is that Mann accomplished it all in his feature-film debut “Thief” (1981) itself.
The recurring themes in Mann’s works involving hardened, urban males are also present here. A single, rigorous frame and handful of colorful dialogues in “Thief” could serve as a fine blueprint for cinephiles on what to expect from Mann’s masterful film-making skills. Endemol Shine Australia (Esa), part of French TV giant Banijay Entertainment, has formed a global partnership with Tokyo Broadcasting System Television (TBS), the Japanese broadcaster and producer behind international hit formats such as “Ninja Warrior” and “Takeshi’s Castle.”
The co-development deal will give Esa access to TBS’s library of new and existing formats which it can look to innovate and adapt for both Australian and global audiences. As part of the agreement, Banijay Entertainment has a first-look arrangement to produce the co-developed titles locally across its label footprint.
The first TBS format now in development with Esa is a take on the strategic gameshow “Actors Vs Reactors,” produced by Junya Ueda. Reinvented and scaled by Esa as “The Insider,” the format sees a group of celebrities in a strategic game where they will be continually and mercilessly pranked. But one celebrity sneakily knows the details of every prank and is faking their reactions.

No streaming service does a director retrospective like the Criterion Channel, and March offers two masters at opposite ends of exposure. On one side is Michael Mann, whose work from Thief through Collateral (minus The Keep) is given a spotlight; on the other is Alain Guiraudie, who (in advance of Misericordia opening on March 21) has five films arriving. (2001’s duet of That Old Dream That Moves and Sunshine for the Scoundrels have perhaps never streamed in the U.S. before.) Meanwhile, three noirs from Douglas Sirk are programmed alongside a Lee Chang-dong retrospective that features three new restorations.

One does not simply walk into "The Lord of the Rings" movies. Wait, that's not the right quote -- or is it? The point is Peter Jackson's trilogy was a big deal around the turn of the millennium, and everyone wanted to be a part of Middle-earth. Well, almost everybody, since a number of actors turned down "The Lord of the Rings" franchise.
It's always a good time to look back at the casting process of major movies and consider the big what-ifs. More often than not, these films go through significant changes to reach their final form, and not every actor envisioned for a role lands up in the part. Look at the risky move replacing Stuart Townsend as Aragorn behind the scenes of "The Lord of the Rings," even though production had already commenced. It paid off in the end, since Viggo Mortensen's Aragorn is arguably...

When Hollywood legend William Shatner speaks, people tend to listen, whether he’s talking about space, Star Trek, or, apparently, celebrity relationships. So, when he weighed in on Sandra Bullock’s very public and very messy split from Jesse James, it raised more than a few eyebrows. Why? Because Shatner, ever the optimist, actually thought there was a chance they’d get back together! Yes, you read that right.

Taylor Sheridan is a miniature industry unto himself. He wrote the Oscar hopefuls "Sicario," "Hell or High Water," and "Wind River," as well as the thrillers "Without Remorse" and "Those Who Wish Me Dead." On TV, Sheridan has been blasting barn doors off with "Yellowstone" and its multiple spinoffs, as well as shows like "Tulsa King," "Lioness," and "Landman." These are in addition to a modest acting career that put Sheridan on TV shows like "Walker, Texas Ranger," "Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman," "Party of Five," "NYPD Blue," "Sons of Anarchy," and even "Star Trek: Enterprise." He also plays the supporting character of Travis Wheatley on "Yellowstone" and Charles on the prequel series "1883."
Sheridan has evolved into the modern torch-bearer for Western machismo, and he is often drawn into the dark hearts of manly men. He also seems to love crime stories, tales of criminals/lawmen, and conflicts that end with gunplay.

William Goldenberg has been working as an editor for over 30 years, during which time he has collaborated with A-list directors like Michael Mann, Kathryn Bigelow, and Ben Affleck, whose “Argo” won the Oscar for best editing. Yet when the time came to direct his first feature, the inspirational sports drama “Unstoppable,” there was still one thing made Goldenberg apprehensive: working with actors.
“That was the thing I was most nervous about,” Goldenberg told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “Luckily for me, I got my first choice for everybody, and they’re all spectacularly good actors, so it’s not like I’m taking a first-time actor and trying to mold the performance. It was about making sure we’re all making the same film, that we all have the same goals and are trying to interpret the scenes in the same way.”

Russell Crowe is one of the most distinguished actors of his generation. Recently, Crowe's career has deviated towards the horror genre — with two similar roles in The Pope's Exorcist and The Exorcism. Crowe was nominated for Best Actor three years running during the 2000s for his lead role in Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, and The Insider. While Crowe has experienced notable highs in his career, he has encountered significant setbacks, too. Poker Face sits at Crowe's lowest critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with a meager 9%, and his most recent slate of films has not performed well.
In 2023, Crowe portrayed the real-life Vatican exorcist in The Pope's Exorcist, Father Gabriele Amorth. Months later, Crowe featured in The Exorcism, where he depicts a single father and recovering addict, starring on a cursed film set. The comparisons between The Pope's Exorcist and The Exorcism were addressed by the writer, who believes "it's sort of a happy accident.

Russell Crowe is one of the more inconsistent actors of his generation. On the one hand, Crowe is an Oscar winner and three-time nominee, having been recognized for his roles in The Insider, Gladiator (for which he won), and A Beautiful Mind. In addition to these nominated films, he has also been in other award-winning movies such as Les Misérables and Cinderella Man. At the same time, these highs have also been met with notable lows, such as the 2022 film Poker Face and 2014's Winter's Tale, which received 9% and 12% Tomatometers, respectively.
Over the past few years, Crowe's career has taken a turn towards horror. These genre movies have been met with mixed success at the box office and among critics. One particularly unfortunate example was last year's The Exorcism, which got a 27% Tomatometer among Rotten Tomatoes critics, and only a slightly higher 35% audience score. In a recent sit-down with Collider to discuss the 25th anniversary of his 1999 film, The Insider, it was brought to Mann's attention that The Last of the Mohicans had not yet gotten a 4K Uhd release. Gladiator director Ridley Scott reflects on his relationship with filmmakers James Cameron and Steven Spielberg. Scott started his career directing commercials, before entering the film industry at the age of 40. His directorial debut was The Duellists, before achieving global recognition for his next two efforts with 1979's sci-fi horror movie Alien, and 1982's sci-fi neo-noir masterpiece Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford. Now, at the age of 86, Scott has directed 29 theatrically released movies, with Gladiator II being the most recent. He is considered among the greatest living film directors, and his work continues to influence and inspire.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Scott reflected on his career and his desire to continue making movies despite his age. He, at one point, commented on his relationship with the two filmmaking icons Cameron and Spielberg. Despite all three reaching the peak of their industries, Scott admitted he isn't really close with either director.

Denzel Washington wasn’t too pleased to lose the Best Actor Oscar to “American Beauty” star Kevin Spacey — so much so, in fact, that he felt bitterness over his “Hurricane” loss for years to come.
The actor (who later won the top Oscar for “Training Day”) revealed in an interview with Esquire published Tuesday that the resentment of the situation lasted “for about 15 years.”
The topic arose mid-interview while discussing his filmography. That’s when he recalled the night he lost to Spacey at the 2000 Academy Awards.
“At the Oscars, they called Kevin Spacey’s name for ‘American Beauty.’ I have a memory of turning around and looking at him, and nobody was standing but the people around him. And everyone else was looking at me,” Washington explained. “Not that it was this way. Maybe that’s the way I perceived it. Maybe I felt like everybody was looking at me.

“At my signal, unleash hell.” For those of us that were alive back in the year 2000 and avid movie fans, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator was an event. While historical dramas aren’t especially rare nowadays, back then, they were relatively rare. Sure, there was the occasional Braveheart or Rob Roy, but they weren’t considered a bankable genre. Yet, that all changed when director Ridley Scott, whose career was at a low ebb following the failure of almost every movie he made in the 90s decided to revive the so-called “sword and sandal” genre with a gritty, lavish redux of the historical epic.
In the fifties and sixties, these types of movies were commonplace, although in movies like The Robe or Ben-Hur, they usually told biblical tales. That changed a little with Spartacus, El Cid, and The Fall of the Roman Empire, but before long the genre was considered a...

When it comes to the greatest years in film, 1999 is tough to beat. Personally, I remember it as the year which made me serious about the art of film, as I was just finishing high school at the time, and had begun to go see movies on my own more often. This was the year I got to see movies like Three Kings, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, The Insider, Magnolia, Any Given Sunday and so many more theatrically, and it’s a year I’ll always look back at fondly.
What’s interesting to me is which movies have had the most staying power. If you were around back then, you’ll remember that the most anticipated movie of the year was Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. While a hit, it was totally overshadowed by The Matrix, which came out on Easter Weekend that year, and...
