Comic Book Reviews: DC Comics Round Up Week 09-21-2016
DC Comics brings us a rebirthed Trinity story line starring the big three of the DC Universe-Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman! Although this will be unlike any other “meeting” story between these icons that we’ve seen before. This week also brings us a few stellar books in the Rebirth line up along with solo Raven series (for all you Teen Titans fans).
Aquaman #7
Story: Dan Abnett Art: Scot Eaton, Wayne Faucher
Review: Arthur is still an outlaw according to the Us, he has to contend with all the problems Atlantis is currently facing while trying to discover who is framing his nation for the attacks on the surface world (Hint hint, it’s Nemo now run by Black Manta). All in all it’s safe to say it isn’t easy being King. I think that’s the...

My mom died thinking she threw away a copy of Superman number one from 1938.
Yes, I do indeed realize just how lame that must sound, and it would be if I gave a flying fish about that book with regards to my mother. I don’t but it’s important to the story I’m trying to write and just so I’m crystal clear, I’d happily burn the last copy left on Earth to spend just a minute more with my mother.
It was Superman number two she tossed out, and you can read the whole story entitled A Comic Book Tale on ComicMix.
I told her it was number one while trying to make the point that she should never throw out another comic book of mine, ever, and she never did. I have been keeping that my secret weapon for when I needed a real ‘gotcha’ to use on my mom.

Confirming that social media is fast becoming a news source, of sorts, in terms of the entertainment industry, Senior Vice President of Production at Columbia Pictures, DeVon Franklin, was asked via Twitter for an update on the progress of the long gestating Masters Of The Universe feature film project, on January 2nd 2015. In response, he tweeted a picture of the title page of the script, dated December 24th, with credit for the completed draft going to Jeff Wadlow (writer and director of Kick-Ass 2).

It was announced in April 2014 that Wadlow had been tapped to produce a re-write of the script – which had previously been worked on by Alex Litvak, Mik Finch, Richard Wenk and Terry Rossio. Though Wadlow’s directorial prowess has him highly sought after (with Marvel reportedly being among his suitors), a director for Masters Of The Universe...

Last week’s column, about the apparent suicidal impulses of the Us Postal Service, advanced what I hope is a baseless and purely paranoiac thesis: Because Ups, FedEx, and their ilk don’t cover every form of deliverable and are prohibitively expensive for many small-business shippers, we are in urgent need of alternative low-cost means for shipping parcels and other three-dimensional objects that can’t – or won’t – be deliverable to us in electronic form any time soon. That’s because the P.O.’s collapse might happen faster than we can create the infrastructure necessary to take up the (very minor) slack.
That would be a Geek Apocalypse. Some momzer with an encyclopedic memory of The Overstreet Guide won’t be able to profitably ship you that copy of Tales To Astonish #12 you bid too much for. And your ability to receive items like priceless Mr. Terrific maquettes, or...

In a controversial move, DC decided to forego publishing its regular line of books and put out 52 one-shot stories featuring some of its best villains. The one-shots range from extremely popular (Joker, Lex Luthor, Brainiac) to the newer and more obscure (Relic, Shadow Thief). They feature some veteran creators and some who have barely drawn a comic. Each “Villains Month” book will get a decimal point after a regular DC Comic. For example, Joker will feature in Batman 23.1, Riddler will feature in Batman 23.2 etc. The first issue of the new DC event Forever Evil will come out the same month as the villain one-shots. It is a direct follow up to “Trinity War” and will be written by Geoff Johns and drawn by David Finch. There are quite a few “Villains Month” books, but the following comics either have great creative teams, continue a compelling storylines, or are simply intriguing.

Omg! Omg! Did you hear who they’ve signed to play Batman in a whole bunch of movies, starting with Man of Steel 2? No, not Anthony Weiner. And not Ann Coulter –she’s already signed to play Nick Fury in the S.H.I.E.L.D. teevee series. No, Warner Bros. found somebody far worse. They hired the very personification of celluloid evil: Ben Affleck.
Yes, I’m sure you heard of this. So did literally tens of thousands of “fans” who were so upset they signed a petition condemning the action. And seemingly hundreds of thousands went to Facebook, to Twitter, hell some even reactivated their My Space accounts to express their extreme displeasure. Yea, verily, Ragnarök is upon us!
To quote the immortal William Shatner, get a life. You’re entitled to your opinion; if you don’t think Ben Affleck is a worthy actor, that’s your opinion.

21 years ago Warner Bros. released a record album called Body Count and it launched a shit storm. The artist, Ice-t, performed a track called “Cop Killer” which was written from the perspective of, well, a cop killer. This is a common device in the communication arts, and it doesn’t mean the author/performer is an advocate for his character. For example, Robert Bloch wrote a novel called Psycho, from which the classic Hitchcock movie was based. I do not recall anybody accusing Bloch of being, supporting, or even befriending cannibalistic serial killers.
However, oftentimes when some strong-looking black guy assumes a position of power, certain other people completely lose their minds. The NRA and similar hate groups said Ice-t was advocating the wanton murder of police and the usual protests ensued: Warner’s Rockefeller Plaza headquarters was picketed, talking heads babbled mindlessly on teevee and radio, records were burned,...

Before I Do This Thang for the week: I’ve been getting messages from readers. Apparently, I do have them. Or, as Bob Hope might have said, “I know you’re out there, because why else would Dolores be propping me up in that direction?”
These messages I’m talking about are all “Why do you use so many links?” Clearly, if you’re asking this, you’re not clicking on them. Hint: Some – not all, or even most, but some – of them don’t lead where you might assume they do. They are instead meant to be weird, “disconnective,” hit-or-miss jokes in and of themselves. So, as the most celebrated member of The Hair Club For Men once put it, “’Nuff said.”
Now, on to That Thang. Meaning I have to stop vamping with jokes about what I didn’t learn in San Diego the weekend before last, and,...

If you’re in Chulalongkorn University’s freshman art class… well, you’re in Thailand. And you’re attending one of that nation’s leading schools.
Oh yeah, and you’re also as dumb as a bag of doorknobs. And The Simon Wiesenthal Center doesn’t think much of you.
Go figure. As you can see from the above photo, the freshmen painted a farewell banner to the outgoing class of 2013. Yes, that’s Superman, Batman, Captain America, the Incredible Hulk, and Adolf Hitler sending the graduates off to their future.
The idea was to show that good and bad people coexist in the world, according to school dean Dr. Suppakorn Disatapundhu. He also said “(We) would like to formally express our sincere apology for our students’ superhero mural… I can assure you we are taking this matter very seriously.” He did; they took it down. Well, they took it down after two days.

As I was saying …
And as for Diana …
I hated her.
Well, perhaps “hate” is too strong a word. I didn’t hate her, exactly. She made me, um, “uncomfortable.” Even as a kid reading her adventures. Not being old enough at the time to put it into words, to analyze my reaction, I figured it out as I got older.
I loved the stories that took place on Themiscrya, aka Paradise Island. It wasn’t just that I was a mythology geek – I read Edith Hamilton’s Mythology: Timeless Tales Of Gods And Heroes when I was eight years old – but that in these stories Diana was in her true element. Unapologetically independent, intelligent, strong, and self-assured, Diana was a hero who inspired. She lit up my imagination, and along with her fellow Amazons, became a role model, an icon for a little girl who thought she might become a veterinarian,...

I was considering doing a piece on how I can’t figure out why I haven’t seen any of my comic collector friends on Hoarders. You know, those people who keep moving to cheaper, bigger houses in worse and worse neighborhoods so they can have a living room big enough for those little, narrow walkways among their 437 eight-foot-high stacks of long boxes? Fear of ending up like that is the main reason I never got into collecting. Or so I thought.
But then I looked around my own claustrophobic living space and realized that people who live in Mylar snuggies shouldn’t throw weighted-based maquettes.
But I’m not a collector. I’m an accumulator. I haven’t paid for a comic book in 20 years, but people keep sending them to me. I can’t get them to stop. So I put them aside, saying I’ll get to them eventually.

Look, up in the sky. It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…. …the third consecutive week that the Geezer, also known as me, used that hokey lead. Pathetic? You decide. But as long as we’re here…what’s the Man of Steel doing this time? Looks like he’s holding his ears. That must mean that he’s somewhere near the end of his hit movie, at the climactic battle, before a kind of lengthy denouement. Because that was one noisy climax. But first, a geezerly digression. When I was young – and we’re talking really young, like six or seven – I much enjoyed the “cowboy pictures” I saw at the neighborhood theater on Friday nights. The dime Mom gave me bought a cartoon, maybe a Three Stooges feature and two cowboy pictures with real good guys: Hopalong Cassidy, Sunset Carson, Tim Holt, Red Ryder, and...

A lot of people ask me, "Creepy, how did you first come to love horror movies so much?" Well, growing up in the Seventies, there was plenty to go around. There were TV classics like Gargoyles, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, and any number of TV Movies of the Week, and there was also...
There was also a ton of weird and quirky bits of monster-themed kids programming. Usually "The Munsters" and "The Land of the Lost" get all the love, and rightly so. They're absolute classics. That being said, we're gonna talk about some other things here. Things you may not have known even existed. For instance, were you aware that way before Venkmen, Spengler, Stantz and Zeddmore there was a whole other set of Ghostbusters? How about a different Monster Squad? Got your attention? Good. Sit back, relax, and get ready to soak up some lunacy as we revisit.

When I was a kid, comics were all I thought about. There was no better time in my day than when I was finished all my crap schoolwork and was able to turn my attention to the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man or Batman
I was a child of DC but soon I was just as vested in Marvel as I was in DC. I remember when Kirby left Marvel to do the Fourth World books at DC. That to me at the time was as big a deal as Obama becoming the first black President is now.
Really.
Kirby coming to DC was Huge. I’ll never forget when I got my first issue of the Forever People and saw Kirby’s Here on the cover.
Comics golden age for me was the second silver age. That second silver age was Walt Simonson’s Thor, Howard Chaykin’s American Flagg!, Frank Miller’s Daredevil,...

Some 30 years ago DC and Marvel produced a series of ads featuring their characters (except Superman) in one-page adventures hawking Hostess products. That campaign ran forever, so when we relaunched E-Man at First Comics I thought it would be fun to get people to do Hostess ad parodies featuring their creator-owned characters. John Byrne did Rog-2000, Max Collins and Terry Beatty did Mike Mist, Lee Marrs did Pudge Girl Blimp, Reed Waller did Omaha The Cat Dancer, and so on.
A few years later I was at DC Comics where I edited (interm-ly; Marv Wolfman was moving to the west coast and had some health issues) Teen Titans Spotlight. Mike Baron wrote a story featuring The Hawk (of the original Hawk and Dove) wherein the lead character uttered the epitaph “Bite My Twinkie!” Whereas it was completely in character, one of DC’s top-most executives took great offense at this.

The Movie Pool finds more than meets the eye to the Transformers Rescue Bots: Roll to the Rescue DVD!
The Set-up
A band of Transformers with rescue abilities is assigned by Optimus Prime to protect the town of Griffin Rock. From the Hub TV network show.
The Delivery
A kinder, gentler version of Transformers geared towards younger kids, Rescue Bots is a well-done, entertaining cartoon that is perfect for the 7 to 12-year-olds it aims for.
The new show focuses on a new group of Transformers called Rescue Bots, who come to Earth after getting the signal sent out by Optimus Prime. With skills made for rescue operations, Prime assigns them to work undercover as rescue vehicles in the town of Griffin Rock. Chase, Heatwave, Blades, and Boulder are the led characters here, although Optimus Prime does show up in cameos.
The animation is surprisingly well done, and doesn't appear cheap like so many current cartoons.

Shit.
I’ll admit it’s clever as shit. It’s interesting as shit. It’s thought provoking as shit.
I came across this on Facebook and I must admit I was mad as shit when I read it. I was even madder when I saw it was a marketing ploy. Don’t get me wrong. It’s a great marketing ploy and I freely admit that shit.
I went to the website and the Facebook page of the person who put it up. After reading some of the stuff on the Facebook page I was disappointed that I was so upset. Why? Because this is the sort of person I should like. We share...

I am a black man.
Well that’s not really true. I’m a tall and unbelievably handsome black man. I work in television, mainstream books and comics. Most of the works I’ve created in all of those mediums have featured black people in foremost roles.
I create black characters because I’m a black creator and I’d like to see more black people represented in the media and I think it’s my job to…yada, yada, yada…
Over the years I’ve said a zillion times that the reason I create black characters is because I felt we were under represented and I did believe it was my responsibility to create characters so young black kids can feel themselves represented.
But is it really my responsibility to create black characters because I’m a black man now? Have we come far enough in the country and...

My time at the New York Comic-Con has come and gone and a good time was had.
As expected, I had countless whirlwind 30-60 second conversations with people, shaking hands, hugging, kissing, and making rather merry. There were some extended conversations and a few business meetings which was nice.
I arrived early enough on Thursday that getting my badge was a breeze and wish more shows were so well staffed. I began running into people I knew the moment I entered the Jacob Javits Center and was delighted. My first appointment was with an editor about a project I can begin talking about next week. We got to know one another beyond the e-mails and phone calls and I think we got along just swell. She then snuck me onto the show floor two and a half hours early so I got a chance...

This is the Wonder Woman I would choose:
She’s from Legends of the Dcu: Crisis on Infinite Earths #1. The designer solved a problem that’s defeated every other attempt to fix her costume: he turned the eagle symbol into something that both holds up her costume and suggests armor.
I dunno who suggested that costume, but I suspect the writer, Marv Wolfman, suggested she look Middle-Eastern. It makes sense. In classical literature, the island of the Amazons has been located in Libya and Asia Minor.
While I like the skirt, I would be tempted to give her pants. And there’s something to be said for a longer skirt like the one she first wore:
There was an excellent analysis of Wonder Woman, “Wonder Woman, Delineated” at Fractal Hall, a site that’s no longer on the web. The writer proposed:
So, what makes her work?
A) Truth. Truth truth truth truth truth.

Emerald City Comic Con kicked off Friday in Seattle. DC's Bob Harras, Matt Idelson, Will Dennis, Chris Roberson, Marv Wolfman and Sergio Aragones were among one of the first panels to field questions from fans. Of course, questions thrown their way involved almost everything under the sun that is DC, from DC Universe Online to the upcoming Flashpoint event, but what I found relevant to Cbm were the teaser styled responses given to questions concerning the upcoming Superman film and Wonder Woman TV Show. On whether or not the costumes for the upcoming Superman film and Wonder Woman television series would resemble the costumes from the comics, DC's Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras had this to say... “I haven’t seen anything on ‘Superman. I’ve seen some sketches for the Wonder Woman costume and I will say this today – there is every intent to make them similar. People do these TV...

Warner Bros is preparing their DC Comics line to become a significant portion of their entertainment slate. While Batman has been tearing up the box office for the studio as The Dark Knight, executives are setting up more Green Lantern and the Superman reboot and eyeing stand-alone films for Flash, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman.
At a presentation for their investors last Thursday, a slide detailed the studio’s hopes to capitalize on the June 17, 2010 release of Green Lantern (in 3D) starring Ryan Reynolds. In addition to the feature, they’ll be releasing an accompanying game and direct-to-video movie, expanding their comic book publishing, and launching a CGI Green Lantern TV series.
Warner Bros chairman and CEO Barry Meyer also said they’re “nearing” a greenlight for a Flash movie. In July 2009, the studio quietly hired comic book writers Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, and Marv Wolfman to consult on all DC adaptations,...

Back in 1988, CBS premiered a new animated series focusing on the adventures of Superman. The "A" story was a Man of Steel tale based in Metropolis, while the "B" segment was a visual scrapbook of sorts, flashing back to Clark Kent as a child in smallville. Veteran writer Marv Wolfman was the creative guiding force of the show and as the series is released on DVD, he took the time to reflect with Voices Fromm Krypton on the show.

Since Ryan Reynolds was revealed to have landed the role of superhero Green Lantern in July, all has been quiet on the casting front.
There are many more characters in the screenplay for the Warner Bros superhero film, as I detailed earlier.
A casting call being sent out to agencies is now seeking actors and actresses to fill four other roles in the story.
Taking this a little further than the official casting call, revealed on Spoiler TV, let's see exactly who these characters are and who might be a suitable choice.
But first, a reminder of the main character. Reynolds will play hotshot pilot Hal Jordan, who is chosen to wear a powerful ring when a dying alien crashes on Earth. With the ring and its lantern-like battery, he becomes the next Green Lantern who is part of an intergalactic corps who are each assigned to protect different sectors of the universe.

Warner Bros. hasn't had any success so far in developing the DC Comics property Shazam! into a movie. Writer after writer after writer has sat down in front of their computer screens and done draft after draft after draft but still the project has failed to move forward. There was some interest from Dwayne Johnson in playing Black Adam, the main adversary to the Shazam! hero Captain Marvel, but that still wasn't enough to do the deed.
But Warners isn't giving up. A while back a decision was made to enlist the help of a trifecta of superstar DC Comics writers -- Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns and Marv Wolfman -- to serve as a creative think tank. Each of the three comic book writers would become a shepherd for one particular DC Comics property that was in the process of being adapted into a Warner Bros. feature film, acting as...

At the recent San Diego Comic-Con, we got some major quality time with all things DC Universe Online from our gameplay footage of the game to our interview with DC superstar artist Jim Lee . We also had the opportunity to get some hands with the game itself, have a sit down with some of the developers and a one on one interview with writer Marv Wolfman and discuss his work on DC Universe Online. Because there is just so much information from Sdcc we have about DC Universe Online, this is going to a be two part story with the second half coming out tomorrow.
DC Universe Online was created with the goal of fulfilling the superhero fantasy in the DC world. Players will be given the ability to create their own hero or villain in order to achieve their own legacy. The ultimate goal of any hero or villain...

THR is reporting that Warner Bros is moving forward with several DC Comics' properties, including "Jonah Hex," "The Green Lantern," "Red" and "The Losers." "Superman" rights will soon leave the studio, but a third "Batman" movie could still happen. Are there any other DC Comics' project the studio is looking at? This past fall, Warners quietly hired three of DC's biggest writers -- Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman -- to act as consultants and writers for its superhero line of movies. Johns has already worked up a new treatment for a "Flash" script, being written by Dan Mazeau. The projects Morrison and Wolfman are working on are in the early stages at Warners, whose execs declined to comment. The studio is also taking pitches on sci-fi hero Adam Strange and the underwater-breathing hero "Aquaman," to be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. Also in the pipeline: "Bizarro Superman" being written...

The Hollywood Reporter’s got a big rundown of all the upcoming and in-the-pipeline movies from D.C. Comics, including the publishing house’s idea of putting three of its biggest writers, Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman on some of the properties to get them moving again with a fresh spin. They also mention that a live-action “Aquaman” movie is currently in development over at Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way shingle. But wait, fans of “Aquaman”, I wouldn’t get too excited about that. DiCaprio’s company is producing about five billion geek-friendly movies at the moment, and I don’t think a single one of them has ever actually gotten made. I could be wrong, of course. Other D.C. films that are currently in the pipeline includes the much-delayed “Flash” movie, with Geoff Johns doing another treatment on the film, which originally boasted a script by Dan Mazeau.

Remember earlier this year when I pondered just what the heck was taking so long when it came to DC's big screen adaptations? Well, all we had to do was give them a few months, and they started kicking ass and taking names. The Hollywood Reporter has a big piece all about how DC and Warner Bros have united in a creative partnership that rivals the continuity-happy gang at Marvel Entertainment, and it's a relationship that is hoping to yield some wonderful surprises.
In a show of just how serious they are, Warner Bros quietly brought on comic supermen Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns, and Marv Wolfman to act as creative consultants for their major properties such as The Flash, Teen Titans, and anything else the studio might throw at them. Even now, Wolfman and Morrison are working on super secret productions the likes of which fans can only dream about.

In the competition to adapt comics for the screen, Marvel is clearly winning. DC Comics, owned by Warner Bros, may have set the stage with early adaptations of Superman and Batman, but their rival used the success of Spider-Man and Blade to drive the development of their other properties.
Since Marvel Studio started producing movies in 1998, they’ve developed 18 different releases with many more on the way. Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, and Nick Fury all have their planned stand alone films along with the scheduled team-up event The Avengers.
Meanwhile, other than the successful revival of the Batman franchise, DC Comics has struggled trying to bring its imprints to the silver screen. A Superman resurrection (Superman Returns) performed well, but wasn’t good enough for an immediate sequel or continuation. The Spirit was a disaster and Watchmen was a disappointment (financially). Justice League, DC’s answer to the Avengers,...
