Most people consider a long movie to be anything over two hours. Something over two and a half hours is a very long movie. Cross the three hour threshold and it's almost impossible to comprehend and if something clocks in around four hours? It almost certainly hurts it chances at financial success. Four hours is basically the longest movie that will play in a conventional theater but, when compared to Modern Times Forever, that's a drop in a hat. Modern Times Forever began playing for one time only, projected on the side of the Stora Enso Building in Helsinki, Finland on Wednesday and will continue for 240 hours. Sure, we have Hamlet (242 mins.), Gods and Generals (231 mins.), Once Upon a Time in America (229 mins.), Lawrence of Arabia (227 mins.), Gone With the Wind (226 mins.), Heaven’s Gate (220 mins.), Ben-Hur (212 mins.), War and Peace (208 mins.), Apocalypse Now Redux (202 mins.), The Alamo (202 mins.), Malcolm X (202 mins.), and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (201 mins.), but don’t you want to see a 240-hour/10-day film? No? Me neither.

Superflex, a group of Danish artists, have created a 240-hour film titled Modern Times Forever (Stora Enso Building, Helsinki) and will screen it in Helsinki for the festival Ihme Project 2011. The film shows “ravages of time marking a box-like office block, Helsinki’s Stora Enso building,” and they are in fact projecting the film on that same building. In the film, “centuries of decay are apparently compressed into the span” of the 10-day runtime. Check out an extended “synopsis” below.

How long is it? One hundred and fifty hours. That's six days. Or, if you prefer, six economy-size bags of Revels, three furtive bottles of gin, at least 12 trips to the loo, two sore buttocks, a pair of red eyes and one overwhelming sense of the utter pointlessness of human existence.

Not a date movie then? Don't be so sure. You could date, snog, get engaged, marry, conceive your first child, have a thing with someone else in row seven, divorce, have torrid make-up sex and settle in for the long haul with your original date all before the closing credits.
