What’s Coming to Disney+ and Hulu in April
Image
April showers… don’t matter if you’re sat inside watching TV. The Disney Bundle™ ensures that this is possible in perpetuity, with the entire libraries of Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN available in whichever permutation serves your lifestyle.

This spring, Disney+ continues the rollout of “Daredevil: Born Again” and soon welcomes the return of “Andor” Season 2 (and achieving the rare astrological phase in which both Marvel and Star Wars are active on the streamer). Plenty of shows and movies will also join the Hulu library; the Emmy-winning original series “The Handmaid’s Tale” returns after a three-year hiatus with its sixth and final season, and FX will premiere the limited series “Dying for Sex” starring Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate (based on the podcast from Molly Kochan and Nikki Boyer).

Top Pick: “Andor” Season 2

The Emmy-nominated (and IndieWire-beloved) series from Tony Gilroy returns for its second and final season this spring,...

How Gene Hackman Inspired Alec Baldwin's 30 Rock Performance
Image
The recent passing of the iconic and legendary actor Gene Hackman has led to innumerable accounts of his work ethic and the impact he made throughout decades of film work. Naturally, one of the other discussions has centered around how he inspired his fellow actors and actresses through those distinctive performances. The nature of his lengthy filmography is such that Hackman wound up working with many younger actors who are now titans of their generations. He had a fiery chemistry with Denzel Washington in the 1995 thriller "Crimson Tide," he worked with a young Willem Dafoe in the 1988 historical drama "Mississippi Burning," and in one of his last roles, he had to face off against John Cusack in "Runaway Jury." One actor with whom Hackman didn't exactly work next to, but who was still impacted by him, was Alec Baldwin.

It should be noted at the top that Hackman and Baldwin...

The Will Smith & Gene Hackman Political Thriller Crushing It On Prime Video
Image
The all-time great Gene Hackman is no longer with us, but some of the actor's movies are finding a new lease of life in the age of streaming. Following Hackman's death, the acclaimed sports drama "Hoosiers" climbed the charts on Amazon Prime Video. Meanwhile, "Runaway Jury" became a hit on Netflix, reminding everyone that there are many gems in Hackman's filmography just waiting to be rediscovered. Well, the momentum isn't slowing down yet either, as the politically-charged thriller "Enemy of the State" is the latest Hackman flick to kick butt in the streaming charts.

According to FlixPatrol, director Tony Scott's conspiracy yarn has cracked the top 10 on Amazon Prime Video, with the movie beating stiff competition from "Jurassic World" and "Smile 2." If you aren't familiar with "Enemy of the State," it sees Will Smith play a lawyer-on-the-run as he sets out to clear his name after being framed...

The mystery and circumstances surrounding the couple’s death stayed in the headlines for weeks. They both had been deceased for several days before being discovered, and at first is was speculated that carbon monoxide poisoning might have been the culprit. The Acclaimed Gene Hackman Sports Drama Getting A Second Life On Prime Video
Image
It's widely regarded as one of the best sports movies ever made, but there was a time when "Hoosiers" made Gene Hackman fear that he wouldn't work again. The film sees him play Norman Dale, a troubled coach tasked with guiding the Hickory Huskers basketball team to glory. Sounds like a fun rags-to-success story, right? Not for Hackman, who felt his career was on a downward turn in the 1980s and that "Hoosiers" would be its death knell. He was wrong about that, and did pretty well for himself afterwards. What's more, "Hoosiers" is a slam dunk that's still finding new fans in 2025.

According to data obtained by FlixPatrol, "Hoosiers" currently occupies the fifth spot in Prime Video's top 10 chart in the United States, which is a remarkable achievement for a movie that Hackman expected to flop back in the day. It isn't the only Hackman movie to top streaming charts since his passing either,...

Image
One of the last movies of the late Gene Hackman has entered the Netflix Top 10 Global Movies chart 22 years after its initial release. Hackman was one of the most revered and successful actors in movie history, and enjoyed a strong filmography, which included a diverse mix of both blockbusters and character-driven dramas. He shot to prominence with early roles in movies like Bonnie and Clyde and I Never Sang For My Father before achieving global recognition and leading man status with the role of Popeye Doyle in William Friedkin's crime thriller The French Connection.

Hackman won an Oscar for his performance and reprised his role in the follow-up The French Connection II. He then went on to star in a number of successful and critically acclaimed box office hits, including Superman, Superman II, Mississippi Burning, and Unforgiven, for which he won his second Oscar. Taylor Sheridan & Denis Villeneuve's Oscar-Nominated Movie Becomes Netflix Global Hit 10 Years Later
Image
Taylor Sheridan and Denis Villeneuve's Oscar-nominated movie has become a global Netflix hit a decade after its release. The Canadian director started his career with four French-language films, including Incendies, which earned an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature. From there, Villeneuve transitioned into English-language movies with Prisoners and Enemy, but gained further recognition for his sci-fi films Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Dune, and Dune: Part Two – which earned a total of 28 Oscar nominations and won 11.

On the other hand, Sheridan is the television mogul best known as the creator of the Yellowstone franchise, including its prequels 1883 and 1923, and several other Paramount+ series, such as Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman. However, he has also written several neo-Western films, such as 2016's Hell or High Water, which was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Original Screenplay, and 2017's Wind River, which he also directed. The John Cusack & Gene Hackman Thriller Sitting High On Netflix's Top Charts
Image
The recent death of Gene Hackman has prompted many cinephiles to revisit their favorite films featuring the two-time Academy Award-winning actor -- though, really, regardless of what's going on in the world, any movie lover worth their weight in celluloid is never far removed from watching a Hackman flick because the man made so many classic, rewatchable pictures. The most valuable thing we can do as film buffs right now is to turn younger cinephiles on to the man's multitude of brilliant performers, because some of these kids were born after his 2004 retirement from acting.

For those just becoming acquainted with Hackman, it's important to understand that there's no ideal way to watch his movies. You can throw a dart at Hackman's filmography, and even if you hit a lousy movie like "Loose Cannons" or "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace," you're at least going to get Hackman being an...

Gene Hackman and Wife Died of Natural Causes, Autopsy Confirms
Gene Hackman at an event for The 60th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2003)
Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman died from heart disease and complications related to Alzheimer’s, while his wife, Betsy Arakawa, succumbed to a rare respiratory illness, according to findings released by New Mexico authorities. The couple, who had lived privately in Santa Fe for decades, died about a week apart in their home before being discovered on February 26.

A forensic report from the New Mexico Chief Medical Examiner’s office detailed that Hackman, 95, passed away due to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer’s as a contributing factor. His pacemaker reportedly stopped functioning on or around February 17, indicating the estimated time of his death. Autopsy results showed no signs of trauma, but evidence suggested Hackman had not eaten for several days prior to his death.

Arakawa, 65, died first, likely on February 11, after contracting Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (Hps), a severe respiratory illness linked to exposure to rodent droppings. According to Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza,...

New to Streaming: Gene Hackman, Michael Mann, Vermiglio, Chaos: The Manson Murders & More
Image
Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

Chaos: The Manson Murders (Errol Morris)

Over half a century later, what new information can be gleaned from the nights of August 9 and 10, 1969? Tom O’Neill and Dan Piepenbring’s riveting (if convoluted) book Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties––released in June 2019, between the Cannes premiere and theatrical release of Quentin Tarantino’s cathartic rewrite of that history––argues that while all the evidence of the murders has been gleaned, there’s a complex and knotty web of conspiracies for the motivations, some more plausible than others. To pare down the 528-page book to its most overarching theory, it postulates Manson may have been allowed (and perhaps even directed) by the CIA to concoct a reign...

Netflix snuck in 12 more fantastic movies to begin March
Image
The fine folks of Netflix can be sneaky little devils sometimes. Case in point: even though it wasn't announced with their regular slate of releases, Venom: The Last Dance made its bow on the streamer on February 25th. They decided to really up their stealth release game with a dozen more titles on Saturday. That's in addition to the 12 already on the slate.

This turned what was already a strong debut slate into an outstanding group. You'll find iconic comedies with some of the most popular stars of Hollywood, a trio of classic romances, and some knife-edge thrillers. There's drama and action, too.

There's also a pair of underrated horror flicks ready for your screen. Best of all is the addition of the finest films from one the most influential directors of the past 40 years. Like all art forms, film is subjective. But rest assured, I'm not talking about Uwe Boll...

Gene Hackman Was Likely Dead For Over A Week Before Oscar Winner & Wife Were Found, Sheriff Says
Image
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said Friday his department is still waiting for final autopsy and toxicology reports on the deaths of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa, but has a fair idea of when the Oscar winner actually died.

An initial interrogation was conducted of Mr. Hackman pacemaker,” the Sheriff said at a short press conference today. “This revealed that his last event was recorded on February 17, 2025, I was advised that a more thorough investigation will be completed.”

Noting that getting final autopsy and toxicology reports “could take months,” Mendoza added that initial results seem to rule out carbon monoxide poisoning as a cause of the deaths of the 95-year-old Hackman, the 63-year-old Arakawa and one of their dogs. Amidst some conflicting information over the past 48 hours, the Sheriff said “there were no apparent signs of foul play” in the Hackmans’ deaths.

Married since 1991 and notoriously private, Hackman and...

Dustin Hoffman Compares “Genius” Gene Hackman To Marlon Brando: “A Giant Among Actors”
Image
After more than 60 years in Hollywood, Gene Hackman has left an indelible mark on his fans and peers alike.

Dustin Hoffman, who starred with Hackman in the 2003 feature adaptation of John Grisham’s Runaway Jury, paid tribute to his longtime friend in a heartfelt statement after the 2x Oscar winner died at age 95.

“I met Gene in acting school, at the Pasadena Playhouse, when he was 27 and I was 19. We used to play congas together on the roof, trying to be like our hero Marlon Brando,” he said.

“And Gene was like Brando, in that he brought something unprecedented to our craft, something people didn’t immediately understand as genius,” added Hoffman. “He was expelled from our school after three months for ‘not having talent.’ It was the first time they ever did that. He was that good. Powerful, subtle, brilliant. A giant among actors. I miss him already.”

Gene Hackman Remembered: How the ’70s Acting Legend Left His Mark and Shaped ‘The Conversation’
Image
On the Mount Rushmore of great American actors — specifically those who emerged in the late 1960s and brought a transformative, bone-deep intensity to their craft over the industry-redefining decade that followed — four faces loom large: Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman.

The eldest of that contingent, Hackman is less familiar to younger audiences than the others, having withdrawn from acting more than 20 years ago, to write and paint in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Over a four-decade screen career, the stage-trained star gravitated to complex movies for grown-up audiences (the only significant exception being his iconic turn as Lex Luthor in the “Superman” franchise), and might have been entirely forgotten by Gen Z if not for his performance as the gruff patriarch in Wes Anderson’s cult favorite “The Royal Tenenbaums.”

Hackman’s unexpected and unusual death (he was discovered alongside his wife and dog) offers a chance...

Gene Hackman Is a Smug and Greedy Villain in This John Grisham Adaptation
Image
The film world has woken up to a tragedy today with the news that legendary actor Gene Hackman has been found dead alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa, at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. For decades, Gene Hackman has been a household name when it comes to brilliant villain actors who have captured the imagination of the audiences. Hackman's critically acclaimed career spanned six decades, and he portrayed more than his fair share of iconic characters on screen. After all, he was Lex Luthor and also played one of the best cinematic heavies as Little Bill in Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven. However, one of his more underappreciated roles was in a John Grisham adaptation. In 2003's Runaway Jury, Hackman plays Rankin Fitch, an intelligent and shady jury consultant who is trying to sway the verdict that could potentially bring down the entire arms industry in the U.S. In one of his finest roles,...

Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Nathan Lane, Valerie Perrine, and more stars pay tribute to Gene Hackman
Image
Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Nathan Lane, Viola Davis, Josh Brolin, and Superman actress Valerie Perrine are among the stars mourning Gene Hackman.

The 95-year-old legend and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 63, were found dead on Wednesday, alongside their dog, in their Santa Fe, N.M., home. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office initially said foul play is not suspected, and there's an "active and ongoing investigation" into their deaths. In a search warrant affidavit released Thursday, authorities said their deaths are "suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation," and that there were "no obvious signs of a gas leak."

Tributes poured in for the beloved actor after the news broke early Thursday. Hackman won two Oscars -- Best Actor for 1971's The French Connection and Best Supporting Actor for 1992's Unforgiven -- and had three other nominations for Bonnie & Clyde (1967), I Never Sang for My Father...

The news that actor Gene Hackman and wife Betsy Arakawa have been found dead at their home in Santa Fe has shocked the industry and led to widespread tributes for one of the true greats of cinema.

Clint Eastwood, who directed and starred with Hackman in 1992’s Unforgiven, said in a statement to Deadline: “There was no finer actor than Gene. Intense and instinctive. Never a false note. He was also a dear friend whom I will miss very much.”

Writer-director Mel Brooks reminisced about working with Hackman on his Academy Award-nominated 1974 comedy classic Young Frankenstein.

“I was privileged to know Gene Hackman because he played tennis with another Gene—Gene Wilder. And that Gene told him about a little role called The Blind Hermit in our movie Young Frankenstein,” wrote Brooks on X. “He said, ‘Do you think Mel would let me play it? I’ve always wanted to do a comedy.

Gene Hackman, Oscar-Winning Actor Dead, at 95
Image
Gene Hackman, the two-time Academy Award-winning actor known for his roles in films like The French Connection and Unforgiven, has died at the age of 95.

Hackman, his wife Betsy, and their dog were found dead at their home in New Mexico on Wednesday after deputies performed a welfare check, according to CNN. While there were no visible signs of foul play, investigators deemed their deaths “suspicious” after finding “no obvious signs of a gas leak” and the front door of their home “unsecured and opened.”

Hackman was born in San Bernardino, California on January 30th, 1930. Lying about his age, he enlisted in the Marine Corps when he was just 16, serving four years as a field radio operator before being stationed in China, Hawaii, and Japan. He was discharged in 1951.

As he began to pursue an acting career, Hackman joined the historic Pasadena Playhouse, where he met fellow aspiring actor Dustin Hoffman.

Netflix begins March like a lion with a dozen movies and series
Image
As always, Netflix brings the goods with the arrival of the new month. There aren't any new blockbusters on the schedule today; those are coming later this month. But a lot of great movies and shows hit the screen today.

Yeah, that's not exactly the best sales pitch, I know. But there's no shortage of star power, both in front and behind the camera. Ewan McGregor, Gene Hackman, Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, John Cusack, Rachel Weisz, Benicio del Toro, and Harrison Ford star, while filmmakers like Ridley Scott, Denis Villeneuve, and Taylor Sheridan craft the vision.

There are several modern classics on the bill, including a trio that are regarded as some of the best of their respective genres. Crime drama, science fiction, and war movies all get their due today. There are some originals, to be sure. A pair of anime series make their Netflix debut, as well as a Korean rom-com romance series.

How to Watch Every John Grisham Movie in Order
Image
Author John Grisham has turned his legal experience into a host of best-selling novels, many of which have become television series and movies. Feature films based on Grisham's work have grossed hundreds of millions of dollars at the domestic box office alone, attesting to his widespread appeal.

Not every one of the nine feature films based on Grisham's works is about the law, however, with Christmas with the Kranks standing alone as a comedy. Grisham has also tried his hand at writing at least one movie screenplay, Mickey, but the best-known John Grisham movies are the legal thrillers based on the books for which he's so well known.

The chronology of movies based on Grisham's work is a fascinating look back at just how far his star has risen. Some of the biggest names in Hollywood have appeared in Grisham flicks, making them even more must-see movies.

Why Gene Hackman Removed His Name From The Marketing Material For Tom Cruise's The Firm
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Sydney Pollack's 1993 thriller "The Firm" was the first film in a long series of mega-hits to be based on the literary output of John Grisham. Grisham, for those unfamiliar, was a lawyer-turned-writer who authored many supra-best-selling legal thrillers throughout the 1990s, including "The Pelican Brief," "The Client," "The Chamber," "A Time to Kill," and "Runaway Jury." There was a time when no one at an airport was without a Grisham novel in hand. Most of Grisham's books were about a young, upstart lawyer, new to the profession, who uncovers a vast legal conspiracy. To date, Grisham has written about 50 novels and four non-fiction books, and many of his bigger hits have been adapted into equally successful films.

Pollock's "The Firm" was made for $42 million and starred Tom Cruise as Mitch McDeere, a recent law school graduate, who finds...

Everything Coming to Hulu and Disney+ in April 2024
Image
If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.

Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

Andrey Zvyagintsev at an event for Sem Amor (2017)
Thankfully recovering after a brutal bout with Covid-19, Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev will return with Jupiter. Variety reports the “politically-minded movie” tells the story of “a Russian oligarch’s reckoning with the harsh reality of his family’s future,” with a shoot set in Spain and France this spring. “The nature of absolute power is a universal theme, and through this prism we can look at any cultural landscape or historical era,” the director said.

Following Summer 1993 and Alcarràs, Carla Simon is prepping a summer shoot for the final entry in her trilogy with the flamenco musical Romería. Speaking to Variety, the director said, “Since I discovered that my biological mother was passionate about flamenco, a great curiosity began to grow in me for this genre, because of its history and its exceptional capacity to connect directly with emotion.” She added “This time music and dance will become the challenge...

Hulu New Releases: April 2023
Image
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.

Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).

The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.
