Park Chan-wook, the Award-winning Korean filmmaker behind The Vengeance Trilogy, Thirst, and Stoker, has just wrapped principal photography on his latest feature, No Other Choice, Variety reports today.
The film began filming in August 2024 and is slated for release sometime later this year.
No Other Choice is an adaptation of Donald E. Westlake’s mystery thriller The Ax and follows “a middle-aged man named Man-soo who embarks on a determined job hunt after being unexpectedly terminated from his position at a paper company.”
The novel’s synopsis gives a fuller picture: “Burke Devore is a middle-aged manager at a paper company when the cost-cutting ax falls, and he is laid off. Eighteen months later and still unemployed, he puts a new spin on his job search — with agonizing care, Devore finds the seven men in the surrounding area who could take the job that rightfully should be his, and systematically kills them.

When the Teen Wolf movie cast was announced earlier this year, it featured several cast members who left the series before its series finale.
Arden Cho was one of those names.
If you watch Teen Wolf online, you know Cho played Kira Yukimura from 2014 to 16, with the character not getting an on-screen goodbye.
As a result, there was hope that Cho would join her fellow co-stars for the Paramount+ movie.
Cho reportedly refused to join the cast after being offered half the salary of her returning female co-stars.
In a new interview with The Cut, Cho said that the salary she was offered was actually less than what was reported.
"I think I was actually offered even less," the star explained.
"I probably would’ve never shared it."
"I could probably, off the top of my head, think of over ten Asian American actors I know who were paid significantly less than their counterparts,...

Two-time Oscar winner and former Un Certain Regard Jury President Guillermo del Toro kicked off a filmmaker symposium at Cannes today, discussing the future of cinema, particularly as it’s been rattled by the pandemic.
The participants at today’s festival conference was a complete surprise, including del Toro, who was joined by Final Cut filmmaker and The Artist Oscar winner Michel Hazanavicius, Costa-Gravas, Claude Lelouch, Gasper Noe, and The Great Beauty Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino, and more.
Without specifically using hard industry terms like theatrical day-and-date or window crunching, del Toro spoke about all those themes surrounding the battle between streaming and cinema and which bucket movies go into.
Quipped Hazanavicius toward the latter part of the panel, “It’s comforting to talk about the death of cinema.”

Ukrainian director Olha Zhurba and producer Darya Bassel are teaming up on a documentary about Ukraine’s refugee crisis after their last collaboration, “Outside,” premiered at Copenhagen’s Cph:dox festival this year.
The project, with a working title “Displaced,” is being produced by Bassel’s Kyiv-based Moon Man production outfit in co-production with Germany’s Koberstein Film and Denmark’s Final Cut for Real.
Zhurba began filming not long after the Russian invasion on Feb. 24, capturing footage of the thousands of Kyiv residents who had flocked to the capital’s railway station for safety. She’s now in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city and the site of intense fighting in recent weeks. “The material is very strong. It’s just heartbreaking,” said Bassel. “Even I could not watch it more than one time.”

With movie theaters fully back up and running, HBO Max no longer has any major film releases to point to with its list of new releases for May 2022. That’s alright though as the streamer is leaning into the HBO side of its branding to offer up some fun TV releases.
The biggest HBO Max original this month is undoubtedly the return of Hacks on May 12. The first season of this comedy starred Jean Smart as a venerated Vegas comedy and Hannah Einbinder as her new millennial assistant. The first batch of episodes was excellent and even won an Emmy or two for its troubles and now season 2 will look to keep up the good vibes.
Premiering on May 15, is The Time Traveler’s Wife. This series adaptation of the 2003 novel (which in turn became a a 2009 movie) keeps up with two star-crossed lovers who can never quite make the timing work…...

Michel Hazanavicius‘ horror-comedy, “Z (Comme Z)” (known as “Final Cut” in the U.S. thus far), was supposed to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, but when things went virtual, sale agents Wild Bunch International pulled the film from the fest. Arguably, it has a better slot now as it was announced as the opening night film of the Cannes Film Festival out of competition.

The CMT Music Awards aired for the first time on CBS and Paramount Plus on Monday night, drawing 5.16 million viewers for the live telecast in early Nielsen numbers, which is up 521 from last year’s show on Paramount-owned cable channel CMT.
The 5.16 million total viewer tally accounts for both linear ratings on Cba, and live streams via television sets for Paramount Plus and other digital CBS platforms. The final Live + Same Day ratings for the 2022 CMT Awards, including out-of-home-viewing, will be released later on Tuesday. CBS is currently projecting a final viewership of 5.5 million.
That’s nowhere near the 8.9 million that CBS scored with this year’s Grammys on April 3, a number that is just modestly above what the 2021 Grammys settled for as a record low, but is impressive for an award show making its broadcast debut.

In the wake of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Danish producer Monica Hellström (“Flee”) and Sundance-winning helmer Simon Lereng Wilmont have joined forces to support the evacuation of some of the subjects portrayed in their Oscar-shortlisted documentary “The Distant Barking of Dogs.”
Hellström told Variety that she and Lereng Wilmont quickly got in touch with assistant director and local production coordinator to help them in their efforts to evacuate Oleg Afanasyev and his grandmother Alexandra, the protagonists of “The Distant Barking of Dogs,” from their war-torn village of Hnutove in Donetsk. The news was first reported by the website Nordic Film and TV News.
Meanwhile, the children at the shelter that was the focus of “A House Made of Splinters,” which just earned Lereng Wilmont a best director award at Sundance last month, have also been evacuated to a safer area after facing a bombing threat.

"Blade Runner" is one of those classic films that has existed in numerous versions over the years. The original 1982 domestic and international cuts gave way to a so-called "Director's Cut," and then the "Final Cut," which featured additional involvement from director Ridley Scott. Since the Final Cut — released in 2007 as the movie marked its 25th anniversary — is the only one that Scott oversaw without an intermediary, fans may be inclined to regard it as the definitive version. However, Scott's fellow filmmaker, Christopher Nolan, has a different take, and it may be a hot one, if you're not used to hearing much love for Harrison...

Maybe the Ayer Cut isn’t so Dead(shot).
Will Smith, who played “Batman” villain Deadshot in David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” in 2016, told Variety that he supports the director’s cut of the DC superhero film.
“Let me tell you, there’s a whole lot that stayed on the floor for ‘Suicide Squad,'” Smith said. “I’m into it. I love that world. I love what was created in both versions. I absolutely would love to [see it].”
Following the HBO Max release of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” Ayer tweeted that his #AyerCut would be “easy” to structure and finally capture his original “Suicide Squad” storyline.
“It would be incredibly cathartic for me,” Ayer wrote. “It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the ‘Edward Scissorhands’ treatment. The film I made has never been seen.”

Hideo Kojima’s genre-defying adventure game, Death Stranding, gave fans unique gameplay and a totally original story. The post-apocalyptic narrative of the title often leaves players with more questions than answers, with the baffling final events doing little to explain the nature of the game’s complex world.

After helping Sam Porter Bridges deliver hundreds of packages, bring together the United Cities of America, and stop the Last Stranding, it’s not uncommon for fans to still have lingering questions about the game. Some of these will hopefully be addressed in the new missions available in the Director’s Cut or in a well-deserved sequel in the future.

September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.

Innovative, diverse and personal stories won the awards of Karlovy Vary International Film Festival’s Eastern Promises industry program on Monday, taking honors in three sections focused on emerging filmmakers in both narrative and docu genres.
Karlovy Vary industry head Hugo Rosak said the decision by Eastern Promises to allow fiction and non-fiction films to compete alongside each other – a new approach that parallels the fest’s newly reformatted main competition category – is based on the premise that “both categories, despite their differences, possess the same artistic value.”

Though we hope against hope that Francis Ford Coppola can one day—one day soon—craft his dream project Megalopolis, there has been the rather touching project of excavating his past and rewriting it for new generations. In just the past couple years we’ve seen Apocalypse Now: Final Cut, The Cotton Club Encore, and (deep breath) Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone—be they canonized masterpieces, maligned would-bes, or unbearably complicated legacies, all are subject to a fresh pair of eyes.
It’s a surprise, still, that he would return to his (more or less) debut feature Dementia 13, a Roger Corman haunted-house picture that doesn’t quite portend a master but has style and atmosphere to spare—a good night at the movies. Margot Robbie has no idea when fans will see her back in the role of Harley Quinn, but she's just as intrigued as they are to see what happens next with the fan favorite character. Debuting as Harley in David Ayer's Suicide Squad in 2016, Robbie later reprised the role for the 2020 spinoff Birds of Prey. In August, Robbie will be back on the big screen for her third time playing the supervillain in James Gunn's newest movie The Suicide Squad.
Given the continued popularity of both Robbie and Harley Quinn, it seems inevitable that we'll see her playing the part again in another DC project. Even so, it's not likely to happen in the near future, as there are no plans set in stone at Warner Bros. for Robbie to play Harley in any project currently in development. That's all and well for Robbie, who recently told Entertainment Weekly...

“We’ve thought a lot about how to expand Jin’s story, and we’ve also spent the last year poring over all of your feedback about how we could improve the experience of playing Ghost of Tsushima,” says Sucker Punch Productions communication manager Andrew Goldfarb in a recent PlayStation Blog post. “We’ve been hard at work on a brand new edition of the game, which not only includes a new chapter in Jin’s journey, but also some new updates that are a direct response to some of the community’s most-requested features.”

In a time when fan power is believed to have some kind of pull in Hollywood, fantasy movie Eragon is the latest property to get a fan campaign for a "proper adaptation" to be made. Based on the novel by Christopher Paolini, the first book of the 'Inheritance Cycle' was made into a movie by 20th Century Fox in 2006. The film starred Jeremy Irons, Rachel Weisz and Ed Speelers, and grossed a reasonable $250 million on the back of its $100 million budget. However, despite director Stefan Fangmeier predicting that they would make the remaining two books back to back, it didn't happen. Now, with Fox having been bought out by Disney, fans believe it is time for the House of Mouse to do the books right.

Rocky and Drago are getting back in the ring on the big screen this November. Sylvester Stallone has been working on a Rocky IV director's cut for some time now and the filmmaker, who both starred in the leading role and directed the 80s classic, has revealed that his new version of the flick is on the way later this year. Not only that but it will indeed be making its way to theaters for those who want that experience.
The announcement was made by Sylvester Stallone on Instagram. He shared a new poster for the Rocky IV director's cut, which, at least at one point, was going to be titled Rocky vs. Drago - The Ultimate Director's Cut. That specific title does not appear on this poster. But it does feature Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago going toe-to-toe in the ring with the words Rocky Vs. Drago underneath. Stallone...

Mario has had roughly as many jobs as Homer Simpson over the years, but in the hearts and minds of millions, he’ll always be a plumber. As the recently released “Extended Cut” of the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie reminded us, Mario has even previously relied on his plumbing abilities to topple empires and save the princess.
Mario being a plumber is one of those facts that has become so common over the years that many of us probably never stopped to ask, “Wait, why is Mario a plumber in the first place?”
The answer to that question is actually quite odd and requires you to take a trip back to a time when Mario wasn’t a plumber. Yes, I’m talking about Mario’s debut in the 1981 Donkey Kong arcade game. Though the human in that game was initially an unnamed protagonist later referred to as Jumpman, he was eventually officially named “Mario.

It's safe to say that what used to be known as "normal television" has had its day, with streaming services now dominating people's viewing habits and the biggest new releases being exclusive to one streamer or another. However, as HBO Max launches a reduced cost ad-supported service today, and with many popular shows now arriving weekly rather than in one binge-watch dump, are we seeing an evolution taking place of what the future of television holds.
The move by the WarnerMedia platform means that from today, new and returning subscribers have an option to pay the regular $14.99 a month, or a lower price of $9.99 a month if they are willing to have ad breaks included in the programs. Additionally, a yearly pre-pay option is also available, offering a 15% discount which makes the cost $149.99 and $99.99 respectively. So the question is, how much are subscribers willing to pay to have an ad-free experience?...

While celebrated filmmaker Christopher Nolan has not made any public statements regarding the three-year-long campaign by fans to #ReleasetheSnyderCut of Justice League, Nolan is good friends with Zack Snyder and has served as an executive producer on all of Snyder's Dceu movies. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Snyder confirmed Nolan has seen Zack Snyder's Justice League and that he considers it a big improvement over the theatrical version of the film.
"Chris has been involved in this thing since Man of Steel, so I think it was as cathartic for him to see it as anybody. We had a long conversation afterwards about how it feels in its four-hour format in the theatre, and he said he thought it had regained its epic sensibility - that mythological aspect that I thought was inherent to the story I was telling all along. Recently, reports started making the rounds suggesting that director Zack Snyder banned chairs from the set of his latest movie Army of the Dead. It was particularly believable, given that the filmmaker made the reveal himself. But one star from the Netflix zombie flick has added some important clarification to the matter.
Zack Snyder has been making the rounds in the press as of late to promote Army of the Dead. During a recent appearance on The Fourth Wall podcast, the filmmaker explained that he banned chairs from the set, which helped to create, in his words, an intimate experience. Here's what he had to say about it.
"I banned chairs from the set. But the nice thing is, it's really intimate. I can just talk to the actors right there. I'm not back in a monitor across the room. It was definitely the most purely engaged I've been making a movie.

In Netflix's Halston, one of the most turbulent parts of the titular designer's (Ewan McGregor) life was his up-and-down relationship with Victor Hugo (Gian Franco Rodriguez). We already know what you're thinking: no, his partner wasn't the writer of Les Misérables, but he did make a significant impact on Halston's life nonetheless. From the onscreen adaptation of the style icon's career, you could easily extrapolate that his 12-year relationship was turbulent, to say the very least. While there aren't many accounts of their torrid love affair, the few snippets we do have show just how rocky it was.
Victor Hugo was a young artist, window dresser, and student from Venezuela when he met Halston. Their relationship was often on again and off. By many records, Hugo frequently said that his surname was supposed to be a pun on his "huge-o" physical endowment (as he claims in the Netflix miniseries...

DC fans are again calling for Warner Bros. to #ReleaseTheGreenLanternScene after Zack Snyder revealed a screenshot from the axed segment. Originally, Snyder had actor Wayne T. Carr brought in to portray John Stewart's Green Lantern in the ending of Justice League. Though Carr was on set and had shot the scene in character, Snyder was forced to axe it completely in place of Martian Manhunter as the studio had other big plans in store for Green Lantern.

Say what you will about Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but the director’s streaming superhero redux managed to branch the DC Extended Universe movies off into its own tangential timeline, which has since been dubbed the “SnyderVerse” by the fandom that now passionately hashtags for its restoration in the studio’s main continuity. While recent revelations about Snyder’s rough relationship with Warner make this restoration unlikely, the director isn’t entirely shutting the door on such a notion.
We know that Snyder, once the driving creative force behind Warner’s Dceu, was already the odd man out with the studio by the time a personal tragedy incited him to relinquish the director’s chair of 2017’s Justice League to Joss Whedon, but a recent comment from the director has stamped the idea with a powerful punctuation. While Snyder’s focus right now may be this month’s release of his new feature,...

This Star Wars: The Bad Batch article contains spoilers.
The second episode of The Bad Batch, “Cut and Run,” sees our heroes searching out a clone deserter to find out how to survive after the Republic’s war is over and the Empire’s has begun. Naturally, it proves difficult for all parties involved to gain their footing in a galaxy changing so quickly.
There are not a lot of wink-nudge Star Wars references in this one. Instead it’s an episode that brings back some familiar characters and creatures.
Here’s what we spotted:
Cut Lawquane
The most significant connection to The Clone Wars is the clone the Bad Batch run to after their escape from Kamino. Introduced in the season two episode “The Deserter,” Cut left the army out of a desire to embrace his individuality and do what he wanted with his life. Captain Rex sees him as a coward,...

The 1995 feature Batman Forever, directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Val Kilmer as the Caped Crusader, is generally considered to be one of the less significant entries in the Batman mythos. Recently, a rumor has been making the rounds on the internet that an extended director's cut of the movie exists, dubbed the "Schumacher Cut", which is much more serious and complex than what we got to see onscreen. The writer of the movie, Akiva Goldsman, recently confirmed that the "Schumacher Cut" does exist, and will be seeing something of a renaissance in the coming years.
"By the way, Batman Forever still has a renaissance coming. I really am interested to see whether the original cut of Batman Forever comes out because I got to see it, recently, the very very first one, which was Preview Cut: One. It was really dark, it was a pretty psychological exploration of guilt and shame.

Throughout his career, French director Michel Hazanavicius has been more interested in mining film history than forging original paths. After parody riffs on spy films, recreating the silent film era, revisiting the careers of Fred Zinnemann and Jean-Luc Godard, and more, he’s now set his sights on remaking a recent Japanese hit for his next film.
Screen Daily reports the director has embarked on shooting a remake of Shinichiro Ueda’s zombie comedy One Cut for the Dead outside of Paris. Released in 2017, the movie follows a film crew making their own zombie horror film when real zombies turn up and the director keeps rolling. With a budget of just $25,000, it went on to gross over $30 million worldwide.
Led by Romain Duris, who will be playing the director, the film also stars Bérénice Bejo, Grégory Gadebois, Finnegan Oldfield, Matilda Lutz, Sébastian Chassagne, Raphaël Quenard, Jean-Pascal Zadi, Lyes Salem, Simone Hazanavicius and Luana Bajrami.

Henry Cavill gets his mustache edited back into Justice League in a new viral video. During the tumultuous production of Justice League, Cavill was brought back in for reshoots after Joss Whedon replaced Zack Snyder in the director's chair. One big problem posed at the time was that Cavill needed to keep his face whiskers as he was playing a mustachioed character in Mission: Impossible - Fallout.
Whedon's workaround to the mustache situation was to have Cavill's facial hair digitally removed from every scene by the VFX team. The edit has been widely criticized by fans, though many are still very curious to see what a mustachioed Man of Steel would have looked like. As of now, the original footage is still under lock and key at Warner Bros., but a new video from Corridor Crew on YouTube presents what it might look like. You can watch the footage below.

Hong Kong auteur Fruit Chan’s upcoming satirical horror anthology film “Coffin Homes” is set to be released in local theaters in August, distributor Edko Films announced on Wednesday.
“Coffin Homes” revolves around Hong Kong’s housing problems caused by the lack of space and sky high property prices. “Hong Kong’s property prices are so expensive that they are out of reach to most people. This is what the film is trying to say,” Chan said in a statement.
The film and its subject matter expand on Chan’s social realist depictions of Hong Kong’s grassroots life and anxieties over the city’s future, expressed through his iconic debut “Made in Hong Kong” to horror drama “Dumplings.” His oeuvre has also included horror sci-fi “The Midnight After” and the controversial drama “Three Husbands.”

The biggest upgrade for a character from the 2017 version of Justice League to Zack Snyder's Justice League was regarding Victor Stone aka Cyborg, played by Ray Fisher. At one point, Cyborg was set to play a major role in the upcoming solo Flash movie, but the very public fallout between Fisher and Warner Bros. during which he accused the studio of racially motivated actions against his onscreen character led to Cyborg getting dropped from The Flash. Now, during the Justice Con event that is raising money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Fisher weighed in on what it would take for him to return as Cyborg to the Dceu.

The hashtag #ReleaseTheAyerCut is trending once again as DC fans renew their calls for Warner Bros. to let David Ayer finish his director's cut of Suicide Squad. When the big budget movie was released in theaters in 2016, it was met with rather mixed reviews. In the years since, Ayer has expressed his frustration over the studio-mandated changes that drastically altered his original vision he had for the movie.

Though the impeccable and fandom-powered journey to Zack Snyder's Justice League ended with success for both the fans who witnessed the well-constructed vision of Zack Snyder for the Dceu, as well as for Warner Bros. and DC Films, whose decision to release the Snyder Cut led to record subscriptions of HBO Max. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’s third episode was another important step forward for Marvel’s second Disney+ series. The hour found Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) springing Captain America nemesis Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) from prison and heading off to new Marvel location Madripoor.
Even more thrilling than the introduction of Mardipoor, however, was the reveal of Baron Zemo: Dancing King. For, as the mismatched trio entered a Lowtown night club, Zemo decided to blend in and let off some steam with a little dance.
Zemo’s dance took all of three seconds, but what a glorious three seconds it was! The Internet, always a font of good taste, immediately latched onto Zemo’s hesitant shimmy like a moth to a flame.
Soon, however, The Internet discovered that it had been cruelly robbed of more Zemo dancing content.
“It was a long dance,” Brühl told EW.

In addition to being a rare four-hour blockbuster, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a.k.a. the Snyder Cut, has been one of the most fascinating movie experiments in some time.
Due in part to an unfailingly passionate fan campaign, Warner Brothers’ major DC superhero team-up got two bites at the apple, first with the studio-favored Justice League (2017), then with director Zack Snyder’s cut on HBO Max last month. The existence of the pair has provided an interesting case study in exactly what audiences really prefer. Based on fan response, it would appear that a singular, auteur’s vision wins out creatively.
But what about financially?

While it is sure to inspire strong opinions from individual fans, Superman has been ranked as the most hated superhero movie franchise. This, according to a recent study, which looked at the average critical response to every entry in major franchises. When it comes to the world of superheroes, no other franchise ranked lower. Movies containing Clark Kent, or spun out of that same universe, are, generally speaking, not well-liked critically.
According to the study, which looked at the average Rotten Tomatoes scores for various entries in a franchise, Superman comes in with an average rating of 48 percent. (This article contains some spoilers for “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” but only for the two scenes with Martian Manhunter)
For regular folks who sit down and watch “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” — as in, not die-hard fans of DC Comics — there’s one brand-new character in the Snyder Cut that will no doubt cause some confusion: That weird shapeshifting green guy who disguised himself as Martha Kent for a scene with Lois Lane, and then had a weird chat with Batman at the end. His name is J’onn J’onzz, but he’s better known as the Martian Manhunter.
While almost all of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” was built from footage that Snyder shot when the film was originally in production in 2016 and 2017, there were two major additions: Another vision of an apocalyptic future for Batman, and Harry Lennix as Martian Manhunter. These bits were shot specifically for this HBO Max release.
