Skeptical is the best word I could use to describe my reaction to the news that a new Hercules movie was on the way. Clearly a reaction to 300 - and not wanting to get lost in a resurgence that already includes a new franchise for Conan the Barbarian - Hercules: The Thracian Wars will be based on a new comic books series and will be directed by Peter Berg, who many not be the first name on my list when I think "gladiator movie."
And if I was skeptical of that venture, imagine how I feel about another Hercules movie, this one produced by and starring the dude in this picture.
That's Russian bodybuilder-actor Alexander Nevsky, who should not in any way be confused with Russia's Grand Prince of Novgorod during the 13th Century. This guy has entirely different aspirations and qualifications. The 6'7", 285 pound Nevsky will "play the classic...

Russian action star-producer Alexander Nevsky is laboring to launch "Hercules: The Beginning." Nevsky's Hollywood Storm will produce the feature on a $12 million budget.
In a move reminiscent of Arnold Schwarzenegger's role as mythical strongman Conan the Barbarian, Nevsky will play the classic Roman hero adopted from Greek legend (where he's called Heracles).
An oft-used hero of film and TV, Hercules also will star in a competing feature project that Millennium Films is developing.
Tate Donovan voiced the hero in the animated 1997 Disney feature, and Lou Ferrigno and Steve Reeves played Hercules in live-action film versions over the decades. Universal TV also produced a popular series in the '90s starring Kevin Sorbo.
Nevsky is a bodybuilder, author and movie star in his native Russia and has spent the past decade making his way in Los Angeles as a writer, producer and actor. Hollywood Storm just wrapped the thriller "Magic Man." "Treasure Raiders," his previous film, will get a stateside release through Maverick Entertainment.

Cameras roll on 'Treasure'
MOSCOW -- Russia's latest Hollywood co-production aimed at an international audience begins shooting in Moscow this week, producer Czar Pictures said Monday. Treasure Hunters, an adventure movie starring David Carradine (Kill Bill) and Russian bodybuilder Alexander Nevsky, is scheduled to shoot in and around Moscow for four weeks. Directed by Brent Huff (100 Mile Rule) and produced by Nevsky and Robert Madrid -- who also stars -- the film is the third foray into Hollywood co-productions by the company and follows Michael York-starrer Moscow Heat two years ago. The company's second film, Time of Change, directed by Alexander Izotov, starred Mariel Hemingway.
