It takes us just five minutes to get a hang of this film’s narrative structure. As nimbly- paced as a fast-bowler playing cricket in a wide-open field trying to avoid all the roar of and din of the cheering crowds in the pavilion. For a film that has a surprisingly large number of characters, the noise decibel is surprisingly low. The clamour of a crowded Sikh household in London never overpowers the emotional kernel of this film.

The delicate supple bonds that grow among people who are not just maladjusted in a foreign land but are also spiritual and emotional misfits in their own household are brought out in vignettes that show the hand of a confident storyteller. Nikhil Advani’s admirable episodic structure of Salaam-e-Ishq failed because of its inordinate length.

Striker opens and closes with the tension around the slums during the 1992 riots. The on-location shooting brings to the proceedings a kind of clipped and cutting edge and an intimate immediacy. You feel you are there in the slums with Arora’s characters. But you aren’t sure you want to be there. We never stay long enough with the characters to get to know them well.

Film editor-director Chandan Arora’s Striker was not an easy film to make. It’s not an easy film to see either. The vast near-epic scale scope and expanse of the slum saga stretches into two hours of a non-linear narration where time passages are made without borders. The lack of punctuation marks in the telling of the tale of the coming of age and rage of the protagonist Surya (a striking Siddharth) is a major detriment in identifying the swarm of characters...

Actor Waymond Lee, known for his role in Workaholics, has passed away. He was 72 years old.

Per TMZ, Lee died on Wednesday, Dec. 18, with his passing confirmed by his sister, Norine Lee, and his wife, Diane. According to his loved ones, Lee's passing was attributed to complications from Als, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The actor was first diagnosed with a degenerative brain disease in October, though it wasn't until earlier this month when he was diagnosed with Als.

Lee's family also stated that the actor was able to return home for a little over a week after his updated diagnosis, but returned to the hospital when he had difficulties with breathing and swallowing. After spending a little under a week hospitalized, he died with his wife by his side. Two of Bollywood’s biggest stars, Shah Rukh Khan and his son Aryan Khan, are teaming up and getting back into business with Netflix.

Netflix announced today, November 19, that the father-son duo would executive produce an untitled “Bollywood series” about an outsider breaking into the Hindi film industry. The show will be created and directed by Aryan Khan in what will be his directorial debut, while Srk’s company, Red Chillies Entertainment, will executive produce the series.

According to Netflix, Khan’s untitled series is about “a charming, ambitious outsider [who] navigates the dazzling yet uncertain world of Bollywood.” Netflix adds that the series “blends self-aware humor with a high-stakes narrative — and promises a host of wicked cameos, blockbuster thrills and an unforgettable ride into the world of Indian cinema.”

The series will premiere on Netflix in 2025. No cast was announced for the project.

I saw the film twice in the same week. I don’t think Karan has directed a better film than Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Except, maybe, My Name Is Khan. Kajol-Shah Rukh’s chemistry was so removed from what lead pairs generally share. But the real star of the show were the two kids Sana Saeed and Parzan Dastur as Anjali and the silent Sardarji.

Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan will be honored with the lifetime achievement award, the Pardo alla Carriera, or career leopard, at the 2024 Locarno Film Festival.
