Movies as diverse as “Short Cuts,” “Weekend at Bernie’s,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Magnolia” and “The Man Who Fell to Earth” are among the source material that inspire wink-wink allusions and tonal disruptions throughout “Super Deluxe,” an overextended and wildly uneven Tamil-language extravaganza that manages to impress largely because it’s such a shoot-the-works, go-for-broke mess.
You may hate yourself in the morning — hey, you might not feel so good about yourself while you’re actually wallowing in the excesses of “Super Deluxe” — but director Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s unstable mix of dark comedy, brutal thriller and Douglas Sirkian melodrama remains inexcusably fascinating even as it methodically jumps a school of sharks during the final third of its nearly three-hour running time. KollywoodSound is an important part of the video, but much like the trailer, the promo too is presented as a puzzle.Tnm StaffYoutube/Yuvan Shankar RajaAfter an unconventional trailer, Vijay Sethupathi and Samantha Ruth Prabhu starrer Super Deluxe has a new offering – a “Ding Dong promo”. In a style that is now being associated with its director Thiagarajan Kumararaja, this promo’s narration is dependent largely on its sound, much like the trailer. The film stars Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Mysskin and Ramya Krishnan in lead roles. In this 'Ding Dong' promo, we have a loop of Fahadh swearing and Samantha talking in whispers, punctuated by Vijay Sethupathi’s character, Shilpa, uttering the phrase “ding dong”. The words tumble out of the character’s mouth while she looks confused; her hair ruffled and kajal smudged. This “ding dong” is a leitmotif, and the crescendo ends in silence...

In an interview to the Times of India, Fahadh said that Super Deluxe is a very interesting film. “The movie has some of the best actors I have seen in the recent past putting on their best performances. More than anything it was an absolute treat working with filmmaker Thiagarajan Kumararaja. I crave to work with him again knowing how difficult and impossible he is,” he said. Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s Aaranya Kaandam is not another gangster film coming from the south, it is a tour de force of cinema. With the perfect mix of style and substance, the debutant director has gone on to create an indigenous and rooted film of the neo-noir genre, which has a universal appeal.
Aaranya Kaandam won the Grand Jury award for Best Film at the South Asian International Film Festival in 2010 and garnered much critical acclaim after its worldwide release in June 2011. Kumararaja talks about the film in a telephone interview with Nandita Dutta:

Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s Aaranya Kaandam is set in a decadent city: a city that looks bombed, dilapidated and dying. The ex-royal of the city has sold off his palace to make way for a hotel and is fighting a decisive battle to reclaim his honour through a rooster! The modern state, the police, plays nothing more than a corrupt mediator between baddies. Not that everything is alright with mafia either–the aging don suffers from a crisis of virility.
Crisis and especially the crisis of menfolk, who’ve ruled the world so far, is the central theme of this film. This highly stylized and meticulously-mounted film from the fertile south creates an extremely engaging piece of cinema by mixing two Hollywood genres-gangster and Film Noir. The newcomer director sets the story firmly in the contemporary Tamil (and Indian in general) society, that he understands remarkably well, and creates a jazzy,...
