“Everyone in Melbourne knows I was cutting porn.”
Who wants to be an editor? From John Balazs comes the tragic and terrifying story of a down-on-her-luck film editor offered a suspicious, yet excellent payday: edit snuff. Will she, won’t she?
Living from client to client, living desperately, and living with three months rent due, Katie’s situation is completely undesirable. By chance a dodgy offer on the web comes through: an edit of amateur footage with a big payday. Basically, it’s snuff. For those unsure: snuff is the filming of a real murder. Initially dismissed as “student films”, Katie takes on the work and gets the job done. More comes her way, as does more money, and more time constraints to complete the edit.

"I told you, you gotta put those videos behind you..." Gravitas has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror film called Freelance, about a freelance video editor who starts to work on snuff films. This indie film will debut on VOD at the end of this month. This is one of those scary concepts that is so obviously based on generic fears from filmmakers and gets turned into a very generic horror film. Just go watch Cronenberg's Videodrome instead - it's still damn good. When a down-on-her luck video editor takes a mysterious, well-paying job cutting snuff films, she finds herself seemingly haunted by the people in her videos... Starring Nicole Pastor, Jordan Fraser-Trumble, Stephen Degenaro, Jasper Bagg, and Hannah Brook. At least this looks good and looks unsettling - all the close-up shots of the computer & harddrive are quite cool. // Continue Reading ›...

Following the box office success of Immaculate and especially Longlegs, Neon is back on the big screen with their latest horror offering Cuckoo, which has been earing rave reviews from critics and horror fans alike. It’s undoubtedly a far less mainstream horror movie than Longlegs, however, and it was only released in 1,503 theaters nationwide over the weekend.
How did Cuckoo fare in its opening weekend at the box office? It’s no Longlegs but Neon is surely smiling at the indie horror movie’s $3,012,500 opening weekend this morning. Interesting to note, Cuckoo is currently sitting in the #9 spot on the domestic box office charts, with Longlegs making another $2 million over the weekend and finding itself in the #10 spot.

Freelance, the latest film from WWE star turned actor John Cena, delivers an engaging mix of action and comedy, elements that Cena has increasingly become known for. Directed by Pierre Morel, this film pairs Cena with Alison Brie in a fast-paced narrative that explores themes of survival and unexpected camaraderie.
In Freelance, Cena plays an ex-special forces operative who is lured out of retirement to protect a journalist (played by Alison Brie) on an assignment in a war-torn country. What begins as a seemingly straightforward protection detail quickly spirals into chaos as they find themselves embroiled in a political conspiracy, forcing them to rely on each other and their wits to stay alive.
Cena’s portrayal of a seasoned, yet somewhat jaded, operative showcases his growing versatility as an actor.

Director Paul Feig and the collaboration with Awkwafina and Simu Liu could help Jackpot! redeem Cena's recent action-comedy disappointments.

John Cena may have taken his catchphrase “You can’t see me” quite literally while taking the stage at the 2024 Oscars, as he decided to walk out naked to present the Best Costume Award. The WWE star confessed in a recent interview, asserting that he has been living a lie and people can actually see him.

John Cena's recent Rotten Tomatoes streak has been disappointing, including his most recent film, Ricky Stanicky Notably, Cena's critics' scores are low, but his audience scores' are high, meaning he needs a really well-made movie to break his streak With upcoming projects like Grand Death Lotto and Heads of State, Cena has a chance to redeem himself on Rotten Tomatoes.
Although John Cena is a well-known and appreciated name among Hollywood actors, his most recent performances have led to a pretty dismal streak on Rotten Tomatoes that, hopefully, can be fixed via his next two releases. In the late 1990s, John Cena moved to California to start a career in bodybuilding, and then, wrestling. For more than a decade, Cena held a spot of acclaim among professional wrestlers, winning countless championships and perfecting his rapper-turned-superhero character. Cena's recent live-action movies on Rotten Tomatoes are mostly "Rotten," with only one hit in the past few years. Cena's cameo in Barbie breaks his eight-movie "Rotten" streak for live-action roles. Accepting the cameo in Barbie saved Cena's streak from the poorly-reviewed projects.
John Cena has appeared in multiple films that have achieved "Fresh" status on Rotten Tomatoes, but as of late, his movies have been deemed "Rotten" except for one hit that featured a cameo by the actor. Cena's most recent film — the 2024 comedy Ricky Stanicky — has a 47 percent score on the review-aggregation website as of the writing of this article. Since projects need at least a 60 percent score to reach "Fresh" status, it seems as if the Amazon Prime Video movie will remain "Rotten," even as more reviews flood in following its premiere on March 7.

On a weekend when “Five Weeks at Freddy’s” (Universal) dropped 76 percent and overall grosses were $65 million on a traditionally prime release date, it could have been worse. With limited studio alternatives, there were some good holds among longer-run films, and solid expansions for “Priscilla” (A24) and “The Holdovers” (Focus). “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (AMC) showed particular strength with a 13 percent drop in its fourth weekend.
“Freddy’s” added $19.4 million after its unexpectedly massive opening. It’s also a massive fall — one of the biggest ever for its level of initial gross, and more so for a film with an A- Cinemascore. Still, let’s be honest: A month ago, a prediction of “Freddy’s” grossing nearly $20 million its second weekend would be considered delusional.
The Blumhouse videogame adaptation is now at $113 million domestic, $217 million total worldwide off a film budgeted at $20 million pre-marketing. Already, that’s a massive...

In what is one of the lowest grossing weekends of the year, Five Nights at Freddy’s was able to overcome a truly horrific second weekend decline of 76% to remain atop the box office with an estimated $19.4 million. As we said in our Thursday predictions, no matter the decline this movie saw, anything it made was just the cherry on top of the massive $80 million sundae it had last week.
It is evident this film was made for the fans and the fans propelled it to that record breaking opening, but with no real appeal to general audiences, we are seeing the type of decline a film like this can have. Of course it really doesn’t matter when your film costs just $20 million to make and has already surpassed $140 million worldwide in just one week. This isn’t a Flash or Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning or Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny...

John Cena's latest movie, Freelance, has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, adding to his disappointing 2020s record. Cena's lead roles in Rotten-rated movies suggest directors may not rely on him for future projects. With upcoming comedy films and positive trailer reactions, Cena has a chance to repair his Rotten Tomatoes record.
John Cena's latest movie, Freelance, currently has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a result that makes his 2020s record seem even more disappointing. Freelance stars Cena as a retired special forces operator tasked with protecting a journalist after a military coup breaks out during an interview. While Five Nights at Freddy's saw a big drop in its second weekend at theaters, the film continues to be a big success.
For weekend two, Five Nights at Freddy's earned $19.4 million at the box office, a fall of 76% from its $80 million opening weekend, per The Numbers. This bumps the film up to $113 million domestically with a worldwide haul of over $217 million. That has already made the movie the highest-grossing horror release of the year, above titles like Scream VI ($108 million) and M3GAN ($95 million). Given that the film was budgeted at $20 million, flying past $200 million by its second weekend makes Five Nights at Freddy's even more of a massive success, as every dollar that comes in at this point is pure profit for the feature.

One would be forgiven for having absolutely no idea that a new action/comedy starring Jon Cena and Alison Brie hit theaters this past weekend. "Freelance" did, indeed, arrive in more than 2,000 theaters and was straight-up buried by the horror sensation that is "Five Nights at Freddy's." It would be one thing for a movie to come in second -- or even third place -- against a blockbuster release like that. Unfortunately for those behind this film, however, it barely made it into the top 10.
Relativity Media's "Freelance" opened to just $2 million, coming in at number eight on the charts for the weekend, per The Numbers. It made less than "The Nightmare Before Christmas" ($2.1 million), which is in the second weekend of its 30th anniversary re-release, and little more than "Saw X" ($1.7 million), which has been in theaters for five weekends. The worst news of all? Cena and Brie's...

Well, that's not a great way to launch your latest movie. The new action comedy, Freelance, has debuted with the joint-lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of all time, with a 0% positive rating following its release. The movie, which stars Alison Brie and John Cena, centers around Brie's character, who embarks on a journey to South America for an interview with the authoritarian leader, President Venegas, portrayed by Juan Pablo Raba.

Director Pierre Morel is the man who made Liam Neeson into an action icon. His movie Taken established the middle-aged character actor as perhaps the 21st century’s biggest action icon, and it was an unlikely transformation. Truly, Morel is an ace action director, with his film District 13 being one of the best action movies of the last twenty years. Since Taken, he’s specialized in transforming actors into action stars, directing Sean Penn in The Gunman and Jennifer Garner in Peppermint. Both were pretty grim movies, so now Morel is turning to somewhat lighter material with Freelance.

A new film sits atop the box-office weekend as the Halloween-themed Five Nights at Freddy’s took control of the box office by a margin of $63.3 million.
In its first weekend of release, the latest horror film from Blumhouse Productions easily claimed the number spot of the weekend box-office top ten with an opening of $78.0 million for the Universal release. Last week’s top film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour finished in a very distant second place with $14.7 million. Despite the finish, the film still sports a three-week total of $149.3 million. Meanwhile, Killers of the Flower Moon dropped a spot to land in third place where it added $9.0 million over the weekend, giving the Paramount Pictures product a two-week total of $40.7 million. The second debut of the weekend, Angel Studios’ After Death landed in fourth place with $5.1 million. Dropping two spots to finish in fifth this weekend, The Exorcist: Believer...

There may be nothing more boomer than comparing Gen Z’s box-office juggernaut to a movie released before their parents were born. Nevertheless, that’s what this boomer is doing: The staggering opening for “Five Nights at Freddy’s” (Universal) is as shocking as the success of “Easy Rider” 54 years ago for its sense of upheaval and disruption.
Like Peter Fonda’s low-budget motorcycle cross-country drama “Easy Rider” in 1969, we are seeing moviegoers under 25 embrace a film as their own while it leaves older viewers baffled. Similarly, its success will have significant strategic impact for the future of production and distribution.
Blumhouse Productions’ $20 million video game adaptation opened to an estimated $78 million and $152 million worldwide. With its lower ticket prices, that total translates to a bigger audience than the first weekends of either “Taylor Swift The Eras Tour” (AMC) or “Oppenheimer” (Universal).

The theatrical day and date model has been one that has been scrutinized over the past few years as the world tried to figure out how to release movies during a global pandemic. Warner Bros famously saw their entire 2021 slate receive simultaneous releases on their HBO streaming service and felt the wrath of filmmakers such as Christopher Nolan. But every so often, that model proves not to be that big of a factor. For instance, this weekend saw Universal release the video game adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s to the record-breaking number of $78 million, $13 million more than we predicted on Thursday. That number makes it the second highest-grossing opening for a video game adaptation of all time after The Super Mario Bros Movie took in $146.3 million earlier this year while also breaking the Halloween weekend record previously held by Puss in Boots.

Halloweekend saw a huge horror hit, in fact the biggest opening for this weekend ever, and many movie writers and critics felt older than usual with that movie’s jaw-dropping success among the youth. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Universal and Blumhouse had been developing a movie based on Scott Cawthorn‘s popular video game series, “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” for quite some time, and it was finally released this weekend into 3,675 theaters. Starring Josh Hutcherson (“The Hunger Games”), reviews were harsh, as it only received 25% on RottenTomatoes, but this was always to be expected based on the younger age range of fans of the games and books.
After making a whopping $10.3 million from Thursday previews – more than the $7.7 million made by David Gordon Green‘s “Halloween” reboot in 2018 – the PG-13 rated “Freddy’s” brought in $39.5 million on Friday (including previews). That was more than 2019’s “Joker,...

John Cena and Alison Brie's new film, Freelance, is off to a rough start. Despite a talented starring duo, the film currently holds a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Pierre Morel, known for his work on Taken, Freelance follows an ex-special forces operative (Cena) who takes a job to provide security for a journalist (Brie) as she interviews the dictator (Juan Pablo Raba) of a fictional country named Paldonia. A military coup breaks out in the middle of the interview, and they are forced to escape into the jungle, where they must survive.

Freelance starts off strong with dark comedy and a gritty tone, but falls victim to conventional filmmaking and lacks genuine laughs. John Cena's comedic timing and facial reactions to Venegas' antics are the best parts of the film. The movie feels harmless and kid-friendly, missing opportunities for raunchy fun and gritty violence that audiences may have expected.
With both a hard R-rating and wrestler-turned-Hollywood star John Cena and bombshell comedic genius Alison Brie involved in the new film Freelance, it's fair to expect gritty violence laced with dark and sexy humor, like if Rush Hour had a less kid-friendly MPAA rating. The Deadpool franchise comes to mind as an example, or even The Nice Guys. And the new action-comedy from Taken director Pierre Morel is rated R for "violence and language," though it probably could even have been rated PG, if the occasional blood spatter or F-words were omitted.

Freelance begins with disappointment. In a montage awkwardly told in first-person, John Cena’s Mason Pettits laments that he knows exactly what he’s been put on this world to do, and yet, he hasn’t been able to do it. After becoming a lawyer and hating it, Mason quit to become a special forces operative, where he soon went on a mission to assassinate President Juan Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba) of Paldonia that left him injured and with half of his team dead. Now, Mason is trapped in the “nightmarish” existence he feared: he’s a lawyer, living a suburban life with his wife (an almost nonexistent Alice Eve), and his loving daughter. It doesn’t take long into Freelance for us to realize that we begin to feel like Mason, as we know this absolutely isn’t the type of garbage John Cena should be doing.

The specific fantasy that Freelance is tapping into is probably as old as the concept of American masculinity itself. The action comedy, directed by Pierre Morel (Taken), centers on a middling suburban lawyer (John Cena) with a profound and unshakable understanding that this is not what he’s meant for. He’s meant to be a good guy, a hero, a super-jacked soldier who dives headfirst into danger; in fact he was that guy once, until a back injury ended his military career.
Though the film follows Cena’s Mason to South America and back, really its central journey is Mason’s back to the manly man he’s been inside all along. But even the most cherished daydream needs a bit of skill and finessing if it’s to translate to the big screen, and that’s where Freelance falls fatally short — yielding not an uplifting escape, but an enervating bore.

Pierre Morel’s Freelance follows disgraced American journalist Claire Wellington (Alison Brie) and her ex-military bodyguard, Mason Pettits (John Cena), as he escorts her to the fictional South American country of Paldonia for an exclusive interview with its dictator, Juan Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba). While the film starts out by presenting Paldonia and its leader as unrepentantly evil—among other things, we’re told that Venegas is responsible for the deaths of half of Pettits’s former squad years earlier—it eventually reveals that various imperialist forces and corporate-funded mercenary groups have been actively undermining Venegas as a means of forcing him to sell valuable natural resources for a cheaper rate.
