Spider-Man is one of the biggest players in the MCU and audiences are always eager to see more of the web-slinger. That wish may be granted sooner than expected as Spider-Man is confirmed to appear in at least one more Marvel Studios project this year.

Spider-Man led a trilogy of his own movies, whilst also appearing in Captain America: Civil War and the latter Avengers films, with Tom Holland starring as Peter Parker. 

The web-slinger has also been prominent in the animation side of the MCU with Spider-Man appearing in episodes of What If...? and more recently receiving a dedicated multiversal origin story in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Acclaimed actor Laurence Fishburne channels the spirit of his late John Wick co-star thanks to his latest award win. The Hollywood veteran has received a special honor as he now holds the Lance Reddick Legacy Award.

Fishburne collected the Lance Reddick Legacy Award at the 52nd Saturn Awards in Los Angeles on Feb. 2, an accolade recognizing one's character and career achievement. Fishburne is the second straight John Wick franchise actor to pick up the award since it was introduced last year after Keanu Reeves. The actor's achievement was acknowledged on the Saturn Awards' official Instagram page.

What If...?'s third and final season received a mixed response from fans and didn't exactly conclude the animated series in a way that left people wanting more.

On paper, the Marvel Studios animated series What If...? seems like one of the bigger risks taken since the Infinity Saga wrapped up back in 2018, but somehow what could have been a majorly unique and beloved homerun for the multiverse managed to deliver more misses than otherwise with an ultimately overall disappointing series being delivered to fans on the House of Mouse's streaming juggernaut. Everyone's favorite webslinger is slinging his way back onto our screens for yet another animated series. Spider-Man's history with animated shows is nothing short of spectacular and this one will undoubtedly be no different. Although, there is one significant difference about this one: It's produced by Marvel Studios (via its Marvel Animation banner).

Set in a world adjacent to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man imagines what Peter Parker's life as the wall-crawler would be like if he crossed paths with Norman Osborn instead of Tony Stark. In doing so, it actually gets to show us some parts of his origin story - which the MCU sidestepped when introducing Tom Holland's version of the character in the live-action films.

It's going to be an adventure to remember for sure, but the show's approach to the story isn't the only unique thing about it, as it has a pretty unusual release format.

One of the best aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Multiverse Saga is the fact that we get to enjoy adventures set within that world on the small screen now too. It's true, the addition of the Disney Plus shows have added a whole new layer to the MCU, allowing the Marvel Studios franchise to explore new stories across an extended period of time without being constricted by the typical two or three hour runtime.

It also allows the franchise to spotlight some beloved characters from the movies who didn't get enough focus. We saw that in early shows such as WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki, all of which spotlighted some of the McU's most popular-and-yet-underappreciated characters in leading roles. Even the more recent Agatha All Along placed the spotlight on WandaVision's best supporting character, showcasing the beauty of placing the spotlight on supporting characters every once in a while.

Daredevil: Born Again is already a record-breaker for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the anticipated series can continue that in the near future. Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock is one of Marvel's most beloved live-action heroes ever. After a creative overhaul, Daredevil: Born Again's story and tone will be much closer to that of the original Netflix series that starred Cox as the blind vigilante. Since Daredevil is still one of Marvel's best series, if not the best, to this day, it was great news.

Nearly 10 MCU veterans who have appeared in live-action projects will be reprising their roles in Marvel Studios' upcoming animated Marvel Zombies series.

Marvel Zombies is among the most anticipated upcoming projects on the McU's 2025 slate. It is a spin-off of a What If...? Season 1 episode and will be one of two 2025 MCU projects to be R-rated.

Marvel Studios may have finally teased the answer to a seven-year-old MCU mystery in What If...? season 3, which could have major implications for the upcoming Ironheart series. While previous seasons of Marvel Animation's What If...? included only heroes who had already appeared in the McU's live-action projects, What If...? season 3 marked the debut of several characters who hadn't yet appeared in the MCU. One of these new additions perfectly sets the stage for an upcoming MCU series, and could have also solved an annoying Phase 3 mystery.

Among some of the new additions to the MCU in What If...? season 3, the most recent chapter of the animated Multiverse Saga series also featured a number of returning characters. But now in 2025, the MCU is soaring back in full strength, starting with "Captain America: Brave New World." Following on from the "Falcon and The Winter Soldier" Disney+ series, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) has officially stepped into the role of Captain America for the franchise's fourth film. Sam is set to find himself in an international conspiracy of Hulk supporting characters, from President Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (Harrison Ford), aka the Red Hulk, to the long-unseen twisted scientist Samuel Sterns/The Leader (Tim Blake Nelson).

Over the course of its three-season run, Marvel Animation's What If...? reinvented some of the McU's most iconic and powerful characters as the series explored a wide variety of alternate universes. What If...? season 3 may have wrapped up the story, but the series' final chapter also teased some wild new stories for the live-action MCU.

What If...? season 3 was arguably the weirdest chapter of the animated series yet, concluding the popular Multiverse Saga series with a bang. Audiences were introduced to a Wild West-themed Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop, a Celestial Agatha Harkness and the daughter of Howard the Duck and Darcy Lewis, among others, with the latter being the focus of episode 4, "What If... Before Marvel Studios fully phases out Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror after his death in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the MCU needs to introduce another variant of the villain. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Loki season 1, and Loki season 2 set up Kang the Conqueror to be the main antagonist of the entire Multiverse Saga, with Prime Kang and the Council of Kangs threatening to destroy the Sacred Timeline. However, after Kang's apparent death in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the McU's upcoming projects are taking a new direction, as Jonathan Majors' conviction and Marvel exit required the franchise to move away from the character.

Deadpool returned to the MCU in What If...? season 3, and the appearance of a new variant of the Merc with a Mouth has me convinced that Marvel Studios will continue to do him justice. Ryan Reynolds is one of my favorite actors, but none of his roles please me more than Wade Wilson, a.k.a. Deadpool, as it seems he was born to play this violent, hilarious and fourth wall-breaking antihero. Marvel's What If…? has officially come to a close with its third and final season. The animated anthology series took fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on a dizzying journey through the multiverse, visiting plenty of exciting alternate universes with fascinating variants of the characters they knew and loved along the way. Audiences also got to see a wide variety of team-ups that never happened in the Sacred Timeline, but with the MCU still in the middle of the Multiverse Saga, it's not too late.

From Season 1's rag-tag group of zombie apocalypse survivors to Season 3's Mech Avengers, What If…? is full of cool teams that could be recreated in live-action. Some of them may require more multiversal variants while others are all still active on Earth-616, but they'd all make fun additions to the McU's growing list of teams.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a genuine gift to comic book fans, bringing to life some of the most beloved Marvel Comics characters of all time. When you really think about it, it's probably easier to count the major characters who haven't made their MCU debut as of yet than it is to count the ones who have, as the franchise has turned the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Thor, the Incredible Hulk, Nick Fury, Scarlet Witch, Falcon and the Winter Soldier into even bigger stars than they already were.

This time around in the Multiverse Saga, the franchise has been focusing on doing the same for some lesser-known Marvel characters, placing the spotlight on the likes of the Eternals, Shang-Chi, Ms. Marvel, Agatha Harkness, Kate Bishop, and Wiccan. Marvel Studios just made me think that one power upgrade from Marvel Comics I never expected to be seen in the MCU could actually happen in Captain America: Brave New World. Brave New World will mark Anthony Mackie's theatrical debut as Sam Wilson's Captain America, but he won't be the only new hero suiting up in the Phase 5 sequel. 2021's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series introduced us to Danny Ramirez's Joaquín Torres, who die-hard Marvel Comics fans will know as Sam Wilson's successor as the Falcon.

Several bird-themed heroes have been introduced to the MCU over the years, including the likes of Sam Wilson's Falcon, Adrian Toomes' Vulture and Clint Barton's Hawkeye. Joaquín Torres will suit up as the new Falcon in Captain America: Brave New World, but one recent bird-themed hero makes me think his future in the MCU will be far more unusual than his predecessor's.

Jeff Trammel knows Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man has big animated boots to fill.

"Everything in the series is 3D animation. We work in a CG pipeline but managed to find a way to achieve the 2D look of that classic comic-book style that was such an inspiration for us," Trammell told Animation Magazine in a conversation about Marvel's upcoming Spider-Man series and giving the cartoon its own distinct identity. Praising their collaborations with animation studios Polygon Pictures and Taipei, he added, "We actually chose Polygon as our partners due to their 2D look development. As fans of their previous work, we knew they could help us zero in on the style we wanted but also keep the characters feeling alive and real, without feeling stiff and mechanical."

Marvel Studios' recent What If...? season 3 has followed in the footsteps of 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine by proving exactly what formula works best for the MCU, and this should be repeated in the franchise's upcoming projects. Comprising eight episodes released daily over 2024's Holiday period, What If...? season 3 marked the final chapter of the animated Multiverse Saga series. Season 3 may have had a bigger impact on the wider MCU than its predecessors, and could have even given Marvel Studios a new way of delivering its most-anticipated upcoming stories.

What If...? season 3 was perhaps the wildest installment of the animated series, introducing characters such as the Celestial Agatha Harkness, Darcy Lewis and Howard the Duck's hybrid daughter, the Mech Avengers, a Vision-empowered Riri Williams and an all-powerful yet heroic Infinity Ultron. However, these characters seldom embarked on their adventures alone, and this, alongside Deadpool & Wolverine, could have set a new theme for the MCU.

Eight years after a strange part of the Stark family's history was introduced into live-action, Marvel Studios' What If...? has finally made it officially canon to the MCU. What If...? season 3 exploring several vibrant new realities and introduced weird and wonderful variants to the MCU, such as the Celestial Agatha Harkness, human/duck hybrid Byrdie and the Mech Avengers. Marvel Studios' best chance to bring Bruce Banner's Hulk back to the MCU was just revealed in What If...? season 3, but 2025's upcoming Captain America: Brave New World might be missing the boat. Bruce Banner has been central to the MCU since his debut in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, and Mark Ruffalo has taken the Hulk to new heights, culminating in him becoming Smart Hulk in Avengers: Endgame. In the Multiverse Saga, the Hulk is still incredibly important, which makes it even more confusing that Marvel Studios seems to have sidelined the original Avenger.

Following his evolution into the Smart Hulk, Mark Ruffalo has appeared as Bruce Banner in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. He has also been pivotal in the development of Marvel Animation's What If...? series, appearing in multiple episodes of all three seasons of the multiversal show.

Two 2024 projects confirmed the biggest mistake the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made with the character of the Hulk, while simultaneously proving this can be fixed. The Marvel projects of 2024 were not expected to feature the Hulk to a big extent given only one movie was released that focused on the Fox X-Men movies. The four MCU TV shows of 2024 were also focused on characters or storylines devoid of the Hulk's involvement.

All that said, the Marvel movies of 2025 could see a return for the Gamma-infused genius. The reason for this stems primarily from Captain America: Brave New World, which involves The Incredible Hulk characters like Thunderbolt Ross, Betty Ross, and The Leader. Marvel Studios has introduced some of the most powerful characters in the history of the MCU in the animated What If...? series. Spanning three seasons between 2021 and 2024, Marvel Animation's What If...? explored some wild and wonderful alternate universes across the McU's multiverse, and introduced a plethora of interesting, exciting and outlandish variants of some of Marvel's most iconic characters. What If...?'s expansive concept created the opportunity for some incredibly powerful and wide-reaching characters to appear, where live-action may not have done them justice.

Among some of the most memorable variants introduced to the MCU in What If...?'s three seasons were T'Challa's Star-Lord, Happy Hogan's Freak, the Mech Avengers and Xu Xialing's Hood. However, there are many more variants in What If...? who have demonstrated abilities that cement them as some of the most formidable and unmatched characters in the entire MCU.

What If...? has been and gone and, judging by the reaction to the final season, there won't be many fans clamouring for Marvel Animation to continue exploring the Multiverse.

One of the biggest points of contention has been the show's shift from exploring alternate realities to essentially asking, "What if this character was that one instead?" A final montage as the series ends is exactly that - Thanos with Wolverine claws! - but there's one Vartiant, in particular, who has grabbed everyone's attention.

That's a version of Deadpool who appears to have countless weapons strapped to his back; the prevailing theory is that this could be the Merc with the Mouth from the Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe reality.

We don't anticipate the storyline ever being adapted by Marvel Studios (unfortunately) but what an episode this could've made. Still, who wants to see Deadpool taking out The Avengers one-by-one when...

Ghost Rider's debut in the McU's What If...? season 3 may have provided the perfect opportunity to bring Keanu Reeves into the franchise in his dream role. The ending of What If...? season 3 wrapped up the multiversal story, complete with cameos from variants from other universes in the vast Marvel franchise. One of the other cameos found in the ending of What If...? season 3 was Ghost Rider, a character many have hoped will be included in upcoming Marvel movies. That said, the Marvel movies releasing in 2025 are set in stone, with Captain America: Brave New World, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Thunderbolts* being the only theatrical movies that year. This means that Ghost Rider will not appear again anytime soon.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe and its related properties had a tough year in 2024, with repeat viewings of the franchise's releases in the past year revealing many unfortunate problems. The year was truly a mixed bag for the massive media giant, with Marvel's 2024 releases running the gamut of quality and relevancy. No matter how good or bad they were, each release bears at least some issue or another that only becomes truly obvious on repeat viewings.

Compared to years past, 2024 was fairly light with Marvel releases. What If...? has concluded its final season, and, over the course of eight adventurous episodes, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)'s most experimental show. What If...? debuted in 2021 when the Multiverse Saga was still in its earliest phase. The animated series took familiar characters from the MCU and put them in new and unusual settings to create stories that would normally be difficult to set up, or diverge from the rest of the Sacred Timeline.

Over the course of the show's three-season run, Uatu, the Watcher, has observed the far corners of the vast multiverse and witnessed strange and spectacular events. However, this has not been without incident. The third season sees the culmination of Uatu's watch, and the adventures of recurring characters like Captain Peggy Carter, with a strong selection of episodes to bid the series farewell.

Episode 1 - "What If.

The final release of the MCU in 2024, What If...? season 3, has proven that one character has claimed the year for themselves despite not appearing in a single feature film. As the Marvel projects of 2025 come into view, audiences are viewing 2024 in retrospect. Admittedly, the year was a strange one concerning Marvel Studios' 2024 movie slate, with only Deadpool & Wolverine being released theatrically. That said, Marvel still pumped out four TV shows in 2024.

The first was Echo, with the story setting up upcoming Marvel TV shows like Daredevil: Born Again. Then there was X-Men '97, a continuation of the animated series from the 90s. Later, Agatha All Along, a spin-off of WandaVision, subverted expectations by being an overly enjoyable entry into the franchise's supernatural sect. Yesterday, the third and final season of What If...? — the Disney+ animated drama about how the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be different had this or that plot twist happened another way — came to an end. Hopefully the fans enjoyed it.

One person who did not like what he saw was Beau DeMayo, the former showrunner behind X-Men '97, another animated Marvel series. "#whatif season 3 yikes just yikes," he posted on X/Twitter. "I’d watch more to give notes on how it could’ve easily been done better but I have some water to watch boil."

That is a harsh public assessment from someone who used to work for the company, and DeMayo didn't stop there, writing that What If...? season 3 "has no substance and feels like fanfic. The dialogue is flat and so obvious, and some of the premises are just weird." He called the new season "the worst kind" of show: "Mediocre.

Marvel's "What If...?" premiered in 2021 and its innovative remixes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe status quo became consistent bright spots during an otherwise difficult time for the franchise. While season 1 of the Disney+ animated Marvel multiverse show combined its stylish animation with rushed storytelling, season 2 was a zany, refreshing addition to the MCU, and both seasons wound up receiving very good reviews on the whole.

"What If...?" season 3 started dropping daily episodes on December 22, 2024, and concluded a week later on December 29, and while critics haven't embraced it quite as lovingly as they did its predecessors, it's still an entertaining watch ... that is, unless you ask Beau DeMayo. The former "X-Men '97" showrunner took to X, previously known as Twitter, to share his grievances about "What If...?" season 3, and his short review made it clear that he's not exactly a fan:

Based on What If...? season 3's Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and comments on this website, the show's final batch of episodes has disappointed the majority of fans.

Matthew Chauncey, who wrote several season 1 and 2 episodes, took over from A.C. Bradley as Head Writer for What If...?'s last year and is next set to serve in that same showrunner role for X-Men '97 season 3.

Beau DeMayo was in charge of X-Men '97's first season but parted ways with Marvel Studios in murky circumstances; there have been allegations of sexual misconduct which he's strongly denied by claiming he was a victim of a racist and homophobic working environment.

Whatever the case may be, DeMayo has some strong opinions about What If...? season 3. He started by sharing a negative review of the series before making his issues with Chauncey known.

He also suggested that claims the X-Men couldn't appear in the series were false.

Embracing a comic book-inspired art style and a new rendition of the 1967 Spider-Man theme song, the trailer opens with a breakdown of Peter Parker's early days as a high school student, including his friendship with Nico Minoru and awkwardness around other classmates. As Spider-Man, he manages to rescue a teen from an incoming car before stopping a group of teens from attacking him further, even capturing the whole thing on a Livestream. This is followed by a montage of Spider-Man facing off against several villains, hanging out with friends, and eventually meeting Norman Osborn (Coleman Domingo), who reveals that he knows Peter's secret but assures him, "With my help, you'll achieve greatness."

Marvel's 2025 slate for the MCU will begin with a show relatively similar to What If...? season 3.
